An Analysis of English Translation of The Book of Poetry from the Perspective of Feminist Translation Theory

The Book of Poetry is the earliest collection of poems in China, reflecting the ancient social life of 2,500 to 3,000 years ago, which is a microcosm of the society at that time, and also an important work for the study of female consciousness in the years during the Book of Poetry. Feminist translation theory is the combination of translation theory and culture, which emphasizes the translator’s intervention in the text, which is of great significance to the text translation with bright feminist color. This paper takes the translated texts of Xu Yuanchong and James Legge as the research object, makes a comparison between the two English versions of the Book of Poetry under the guidance of feminist translation theory, analyzes the embodiment of feminist consciousness in the two versions, for the purpose of exploring how feminist translators’ self-consciousness plays a specific role in translation practice, and how the two translators use the strategies in the theory to intervene the translations.

A preliminary exploration of feminist translation strategies

Abstract Interventionist feminist translation theory prompts translators to identify and rectify sexist notions in source texts. It encourages critical awareness and reinterprets texts through a feminist lens. Based on interventionist feminist translation theory, this research investigates how depictions of women’s physical charm, often unnecessary and rooted in stereotypes, are handled in translations. Focusing on seven instances from Liu Cixin’s The Three-Body Trilogy — a notable Chinese science fiction work debated for its sexism —, the study contrasts the source text with its English and Spanish translations. By analysing the selected fragments of the Chinese novel and the unmissable alterations to the original in the target texts, this paper demonstrates how the techniques of elision and adaptation can help translators iron out the sexist implications. The findings contribute to our understanding of feminist translation strategies for addressing sexist elements in literary works.

Exploring feminist translation in Liu Cixin’s The Three-Body Trilogy

ABSTRACT According to the interventionist feminist translation theory, sexist ideas found in source texts should be questioned and corrected. In some materials, signs of sexism are embodied in some unnecessary and inappropriate emphases regarding women’s gender attributes, which are almost related to certain stereotypical images. The present paper aims to explore how these problematic emphases could be treated in a feminist translation praxis applying a contrastive study of the original texts and some solutions provided by translators. To this end, the current work is designed to focus on the study of six specific cases that have been collected from Liu Cixin’s The Three-Body Trilogy, a well-known Chinese science fiction novel that has sparked widespread controversy in terms of sexism. In each case, after studying the questionable original Chinese fragment, I will analyze its translations into English and Spanish to assess whether the sexism found in the source text can be attenuated or avoided after the translation process. This study will shed some light on how translators could deal with sexist emphases from a feminist approach.

A Feminist Approach to the Reconstruction of Fidelity Paradigm - A Case Study of Jane Eyre

From a feminist perspective and using feminist translation theory as its theoretical framework, this article, subverts the traditional notion of fidelity in translation through Sherry Simons feminist translation theory. It employs strategies of supplementation and hijacking to conduct a comparative study of male and female translations of Charlotte Brontes Jane Eyre. This research demonstrates differences in translation strategies and ideological perspectives between male and female translators, indicating that female translators, when using the supplementation strategy, pay more attention to shaping female characters and qualities. They also incorporate their own understanding and sympathy for female characters into the translation process to highlight the translators subjective position. However, male translators may deliberately or inadvertently stigmatize, belittle, or mock female images in their translations. Therefore, female translators employ the hijacking strategy to intervene in the text with feminism and embed female thinking. The goal is to eliminate discrimination against women and strive for gender equality. And it highlights the identity and subjectivity of female translators and advocating for gender equality. At the same time, the strategies and significance of feminist translation theory provide rich intellectual resources for the criticism and development of translation theory.

A Comparative Study of Two Chinese Version of Anne of the Green Gables from Perspective of Feminist Translation Theory

In recent years, women have gradually noticed their identities and self-development with the improvement of womens social status around the world. Influenced by the Western feminist movement, people in China have gradually awakened their awareness of gender equality and paid more attention to female groups. Many works highlighting feminist characteristics have been introduced into China. As a result, women translators have been affected and conducted the translation works with more characteristics of female. This helps the spread and development of feminism widely. The research object of this thesis is two English-Chinese versions of "Anne of the Green Gable". "Anne of the Green Gables" is a feminist novel that tells the story of the heroine Anne growing up after she was adopted. It has strong feminist characteristics. Based on feminist translation theory, it uses textual scrutiny and comparative research methods to explore whether the translator's gender affects the output of the target language in translation. Furthermore, the feminist consciousness of female translator can be explored in language expression and cultural transmission; On the one hand, it can enrich the comparative analysis of female and male translators under feminist translation theory in academia, which can further promote the development of feminism, and draw the public's attention and recognition of female translators. In addition, as the children's literature, it has certain educational significance for the development of female children and the cultivation of gender awareness.

A Report on Translation of Go Princess Go from the Perspective of Feminist Translation Theory

This paper is a translation practice report on three parts of the long-form online novel Go Princess Go, selected as material for translation. This time-travel online novel, written by Xiancheng, is a major pioneer of Chinese online crossover novels because of the change in the gender of the crossover victim. This paper takes gender consciousness contrast as the focus of translation, uses feminist translation theory for case analysis, and makes a preliminary discussion on how to select translation strategies to translate female-oriented online novels.

E-C Translation through the Perspective of Feminist Translation Theory Exemplified by Uncle Toms Cabins Two Translation Versions by Translators of Different Genders

The issue of gender inequality has been an uncharted territory in academic research about translation. With the pressure of the Feminist Movement, the gender issue started to draw the attention of translation studies. Translation enables readers to see beyond their own cultural backgrounds and to have new vistas of the world and history, which makes it a perfect platform for feminists to assert their ideas about the socio-economic situations of women and the complex relationship between the two genders. Uncle Toms Cabin, in full Uncle Toms Cabin, or Life Among the Lowly, written by female writer Harriet Beecher Stowe, has been translated into Chinese by a number of Chinese scholars. This thesis regards the versions translated by male translator Li Zixiu and female translator Wang Jiaxiang as research objects to analyze their differences in terms of translation strategies to explore how translators can contribute to literary translation from the feminist point of view. Finally, this study found that the female translator is more gender-conscious, and has adopted a unisex-orientated vision, asserted her gender identity, and employed gender inclusive language.

(Re)mapping the Inter-Philosophical Trajectories of Feminist Translation Theory and Praxis

The much celebrated and visibly interventionist Feminist translation theories and praxis that challenged the canonical norms of western translation theories more radically and heralded in the era of resignification in the field of gender and/in translation, is not an isolated upsurging of English experimental translation practices of Quebec feminist writings. Rather, like every text is intertextual in the poststructuralist frame work, the present paper seeks to argue that every philosophy is inter-philosophical, and the philosophical core of feminist translation is located in the theoretical premises of three major turns in literary and cultural studies i.e., poststructuralism, postcolonialism and feminism. Thus in the present paper an attempt is made to map the philosophical trajectories of poststructuralism, postcolonialism and feminism(s) to unearth those radical theories, concepts and categories that ultimately paved the way for the emergence of Feminist translation theory(s) and practice(s). Visualization analysis of feminist translation research in China (2002–2021) based on CiteSpace

Based on 601 articles on feminist translation theory published in China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) in the last 20 years from 2002 to 2021, this article draws a scientific knowledge map and makes a visual analysis of the research articles on feminist translation theory in China using CiteSpace as a visual tool. It was found that (1) both the cooperation between researchers and between research institutions in the domain of feminist translation research in China was not strong; (2) the focus of feminist translation research in China is mainly on feminism, feminist translation theory, feminist translation, and translation; (3) according to the map of the time zone and keywords mutation, feminist translation research in China is constantly moving toward a decline after fast development.

An Analysis of English Translation of Li Qingzhao's Ci Poetry with Feminist Translation Theory

Feminist translation theory has a long history and has been developed and perfected in the translation practice of many works. This section explains feminist translation theory and also explains the translation perspective of "bisexual homology" that belongs to the feminist translation methodology. This essay proposed to discuss a famous poet in Song Dynasty, who is Li Qingzhao. Her poems reflect the characteristics of the Song Dynasty women's euphemisms and shallow feelings, and reflect women's keen intuition. In this paper, it aims to analyze how a variety of translators express feminism in translated texts. It is obvious that translators always use preface, footnoting, hijacking and supplement to represent feminism. After the analysis of translated text, the strategies that used in these texts can be an effective and efficient method to make the readers have a deeper and more clear understanding of some traditional Chinese stuffs in the these poems and the representing in feminism.

A Comparative Study on Two Chinese Versions of Gone with the Wind from the Perspective of Feminist Translation Theory

Feminist translation is one of the key topics in current research and has developed by leaps and bounds since the 1980s. In order to correct the potential defects in feminist translation, some scholars put forward the translation perspective of androgyny. It was found that the translation studies of Gone with the Wind were mostly based on feminist translation strategies, but the research on translator’s ability of androgyny has still been insufficient. This paper used Gone with the Wind and its two Chinese translations as objects of the study. It compared different feminist translation strategies the two translators chose in their translations and evaluated whether these two translators have the ability of androgyny. After analyzing these cases, it was found that two translators all used feminist translation strategies to translate. They often used the strategy of “supplement”, and sometimes also used the strategy of “hijacking”, in order to strengthen the existence of female roles in the text. However, when translating characters whose genders were opposite to their own, the two translators failed to think from the perspective of these characters but translated literally or from the perspective of their own genders, which indicated that the perspective of androgyny was still difficult to achieve. Therefore, translators should be aware of the characteristics of two different genders and try to improve their ability of androgyny.

The paper not only emphasizes the contributions of Western feminist translators such as Flotow and Simon but also analyzes the dissemination and developmental trajectory of feminist translation theory in China. It delineates the characteristics and impacts of different developmental stages. The radical nature and cultural diversity inherent in feminist translation theory result in varied developmental processes across different countries. Overall, this theory continues to evolve, warranting a dialectical perspective, and the process of localizing feminist translation theory in China presents both challenges and potentials, offering new perspectives for further research.

This study is meant to provide one more angle to view Eileen Chang’s translation and other works, which is not only confined to The Old Man and the Sea. No matter in her work nor translation, the feminist conscious is supposed to be noticed. However, for the feminist translation theory, it cannot be regarded as a perfect one, the drawbacks and limitations need to be emphasized too.

Study on the Diplomatic Interpretation Strategies from the Perspective of Feminist Translation Theory

It is widely acknowledged that gender equality has been a crucial issue in our society. Language, more specifically, translation, is one of the most powerful weapons to fight for women’s rights, giving rise to Feminist Translation theory. Moreover, interpreters in high-level diplomatic meetings bear the responsibility of building a positive national image and conveying the accurate information to the whole world. China makes every effort to promote gender equality in international society, which demands interpreters to improve their gender awareness in this process. Therefore, combining this new perspective with diplomatic interpretation by discovering the feminist translation strategies which are adopted by interpreters can perfectly serve this purpose. This paper takes the qualitative and corpus method to analyze the feminist translation strategies used in the press conference held by the Chinese foreign ministry from 2015 to 2022 and come up with potential solutions after digging into different application in translation and diplomatic interpretation.

Feminism and literary translation: A systematic review

Feminist translation theory demeans the culture of the patriarchal hegemony of translation. The purpose of this study is twofold: to investigate the main trends in the studies on feminism and literary translation and to analyse the main ways through which feminist translation theory has been applied by various researchers in the studies of translated novels. To this end, the databases of EBSCO, ProQuest, Taylor and Francis, ETHOS, and Google Scholar have been explored, and thirty-three studies published between 2005 and 2021 have been analysed. A systematic review was used as a research methodology, and the studies were analysed using a content analysis method. The findings revealed that there are very few significant studies on feminism and translation of novels, and at least until the sharp increase in interest in research in the field emerged in 2019. Moreover, other studies have concluded that feminist translation theory has focused on examining the impact of gender consciousness and translator ideology on the translation process, exploring feminist translation strategies, and analysing the transmission of gendered language in the translated text. The findings have provided feminist and translation studies researchers with a comprehensive understanding of the current state of applied feminist translation theory in the studies addressing translated novels.

Based on Skopos theory, the paper explores how translator's subjectivity acts in translation activities from the feminist perspective, aiming to reveal the relationship between feminist translation and translator's subjectivity. On the basis of a brief introduction, description and evaluation of major feminist translation theories, this study will analyze and evaluate different feminist translation strategies, and conduct critical research of translator's subjectivity, focusing on how feminist translation theory traveled on Chinese soil and the influence of translator's subjectivity combined with Chinese feminist translation.
