Compact high-voltage vacuum feedthrough

A vacuum feedthrough has been designed at this laboratory to operate at 40 kV and 10−9 Torr. It is small in size, 3.81 cm in diameter and extending 4.45 cm into the vacuum chamber. A selection of commercial connectors is available. The re-entrant design fully shields the conductor for safety, prevention of noise pickup, and protection from environmental effects.

Rotary, Linear Motion Vacuum Feedthrough

This paper describes a rotary, linear motion feedthrough. This was designed and built to permit film deposition from a source located below the substrate and subsequent rotation by 180° and translation of 3 in. This combination of motions was required for the film deposition and subsequent movement of the substrate and thin film into position to form one plate of a vibrating capacitor.

An 80 kV Do It Yourself High Voltage Vacuum Feedthrough

A high voltage vacuum feedthrough which can be constructed with limited facilities is described. Its main feature is a compression O-ring seal used in place of the conventional metal-to-ceramic, or metal-to-glass seals. This sealing technique permits fabrication of the feedthrough from easially machined materials, which may also be nonmagnetic.

Doubly Insulated, Guarded Ultrahigh Resistance Vacuum Feedthroughs

The design modifications to turn a commercial ultrahigh vacuum feedthrough into a sapphire insulated guarded and shielded unit are described. Feedthroughs thus modified performed well in transport and emission measurements and the impedance of the units approached 1016 Ω when the sapphire insulation was properly cleaned. Cleaning procedures and the coupling of these units to low capacitance rigid lines made from standard copper plumbing fittings are also described.

An Economical High Vacuum Water Cooled Sputtering Cathode Assembly and Feedthrough

A very economical high vacuum feedthrough and water cooled cathode pedestal and dark space shield assembly were designed and built in our laboratories without requiring any model shop time and without purchasing any expensive material from the outside. The effectiveness of this design to sputter alloys was verified by x-ray spectrographic techniques. During a typical supttering run 5000 V dc at 150 mA could be handled by this cathode assembly and feedthrough without difficulty. This particular feedthrough design was tested successfully in the 10−7 Torr range.

Special Diagnostic Devices

In contrast to plasma diagnostic probes having linear motion only, recent years have seen an increase in the number of special diagnostic devices having multiple degrees of freedom. In addition, the single custom-built probe tip has gradually yielded to the concept of mounting several pre-set probe tips on plug-in type probe holders. Several of the special diagnostic devices, designed to solve particular positioning and measurement problems, are described and illustrated. In particular, the problems associated with achieving the various mechanical movements within a vacuum, and the methods employed in controlling the coaxial conductors from the probe tip to the vacuum feedthrough are discussed.

The university of toledo beam foil facility

The facility for experimental work in beam foil spectroscopy being developed at The University of Toledo involves several novel features which will be described here. These include: 1. 1. Provisions for optically scanning the ion beam and automatically recording the data so obtained in a multichannel analyzer. Scanning is accomplished by moving a collimating lens and mirror parallel to the beam with constant velocity. The collimated beam is subsequently focused on the entrance slit of a Perkin Elmer f̵/4.5 grating monochromator. Single photons are detected and pulses are recorded in a multiscaler synchronized with the beam scanner. 2. 2. A facility for making charge state identification of spectral lines using a technique which is compatible with the geometry employed for mean life measurements is being constructed. A set of parallel electric field plates can be raised in the observation chamber to beam level through vacuum feed-throughs and a transverse electric field applied. Light from the beam is observed through a slit located a distance L downstream along the plate and spectral wavelengths are determined for both directions of the applied electric field E. The net transverse Doppler shift induced can easily be seen to be Δλ/λ=Z·2eEL/(2mc 2T) 1 2 , where T and mc 2 are the kinetic and rest energies of the ion beam respectively. Introduction of representative parameters shows that a shift of 2 Å/unit charge is easily attainable. 3. 3. Use of nanosecond pulsed beam time of flight techniques to measure the energy of the ion beam after it emerges from the foil. This technique has been in routine use in this laboratory in nuclear physics experiments and its extension to these applications will be described.

A Long Path, Low Temperature Cell

Design and performance are given of a multiple traversal low temperature absorption cell that operates routinely at a path length of 230 m. The system is comprised of an f/30-aperture White cell surrounded by an aluminum Dewar. The cell has been used in the temperature range 300-77 K and may be pressurized to 3 atm. Vacuum feedthrough adjustments are employed in order to correct for defocusing of the mirrors during the cooling process.
