Use of Social Media Platforms to Address Addiction and Psychosis in a New Age of Online College Gamblers

As gambling companies expand into the digital world, they have begun to approach the next generation in novel ways. Most recently, gambling companies have partnered with academic institutions to reach younger and more impressionable adults. Per a recent New York Times Articles titled, “How College and Sports Betting Companies “Ceasarized” Campus Life”, over eight universities have already partnered with online sports betting companies [1]. These academic institutions direct students, irrespective of age, to betting websites with promo codes which provide “free” funds to gamble [1]. While the full extent of the repercussions of such actions are not yet clear, to hand-wave these endorsements as “harmless” and “free” is sorely naïve.

The usage of social media for learning and teaching in the built environment: a perspective from students

Advancement in information and communication technologies has led to the emergence of Social Media (SM). SM platforms are used to facilitate information sharing and learning. Literature shows that SM platforms have been associated with effective learning and improved student academic performance. Despite the recorded successes, the use of SM platforms to support students’ learning in built environment programmes has not been fully investigated. To address this knowledge gap, the current study examines the barriers and drivers encouraging the use of SM technologies to support learning and teaching in built environment programmes based on the perspective of university students. The data for the study were collected using semi-structured interviews and questionnaires. The mean score (MS) was used to analyse the quantitative data, while the qualitative data were analysed using thematic analysis. The top-two drivers for using SM technologies are the need for collaboration among students and compatibility with a twenty-first-century education. The top-two barriers to using SM platforms are the cost of internet subscriptions and the quality of internet services available in a particular location. The result shows that students are willing to incorporate elements of online learning. The research contributes to the current body of knowledge by highlighting the drivers and barriers to using SM to support learning. Moreover, the outcome of this study may guide administrators in higher institutions and other education policymakers, specifically for developing countries, to make informed decisions regarding integrating SM technologies into learning and teaching.

The Impact of Social Media on Learning Behavior of CSL Learners

Social media platforms have emerged as global platforms for collaboration and interaction. This research aims to investigate the positive and negative influences of social media platforms on the learning behavior and educational environment of the CSL student community in Vietnam. The study focuses on exploring localized factors that significantly impact both the psychological well-being and academic performance of peers. Drawing upon the theoretical framework of Uses and Gratification theory (UGT), a quantitative research method was employed, involving students from the Department of Chinese Language and Culture at Dainam University, Vietnam. The findings indicate that, within the Vietnam context, the use of social media platforms has less positive impact as compared to negative impacts on the behavior of students towards Chinese language learning. Consequently, this study recommends making the students responsible for the use of online social media platforms, therefore, awareness campaigns, seminars, workshops, and media initiatives should be employed to mitigate the negative effects of social media and foster sustainable Chinese education in Vietnam.

Social Media Use among American Indian and Alaska Native People: Implications for Health Communication Strategies

Patients, health professionals, and communities use social media to communicate information about health determinants and associated risk factors. Studies have highlighted the potential for social media to reach underserved populations, suggesting these platforms can be used to disseminate health information tailored for diverse and hard-to-reach populations. Little is known, however, about the use of social media among American Indian and Alaska Native populations. The objective of this cross-sectional study is to better understand the use of social media platforms to disseminate health information in this population. We surveyed 429 American Indian and Alaska Native adults attending cultural events in Washington State on their use of various types of social media. We used logistic regressions to assess participant use of Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook, and Instagram as related to participant demographics, including age, gender, education, and residence (either reservation, rural area but not a reservation, or large metropolitan area). Facebook was used by more participants (79%) than other platforms, followed by Instagram (31%); Nearly half of participants used only one social media platform (48%). Age was negatively associated with using Instagram (0.8 OR, 95% CI: 0.7, 0.9) and Snapchat (0.6 OR, 95% CI: 0.5, 0.7). College education was associated with a higher odds of using an additional social media platform compared to those without any college education (2.0 OR, 95% CI: 1.1, 3.6). Most participants used social media platforms, suggesting that they may be a useful tool in disseminating health and health risk information to American Indian and Alaska Native people. Further research should document how social media can be used to effectively disseminate risk and health information across the life course and assess whether it can influence health knowledge and behaviors among this populations.

Determination of Social Media Satisfaction Among Iraqi Audience Toward Religious Issues

This research aims to determine the level of satisfaction with the public's use of social media platforms. The goal is also to shed light on how the users of social media sites fulfill their needs and motives for getting information about religious issues which related Islamic topics. Also, through this paper, we will show the role of the new media in spreading religious awareness among the public, for the reason that the electronic media is no longer satisfied with just monitoring the event and communicating information, but rather has the power to influence the behavior of users, becoming the pressure and control factors, triggering event and preparing for it at the same time. This research is designed according to the method of quantitative research. A questionnaire was prepared and distributed to a random, anomalous sample of the Iraqi audiences in order to determine the satisfaction of using the new media in terms of religious issues. This research shows how important social networking platforms are and how it has become an integral part of the daily behavior. This research also added a new experience to the concept application of Theory of Uses and Gratification (U&G), where it applies the concept of this theory and knowledge of the levels of influence on the public through their utilization of social networking sites and discovers the satisfaction that they obtain. The results of this search indicate that the Iraqi public’s motives from their use of social media platforms are cognitive motives that enhanced their knowledge of religious issues of Islamic.

Social Media and Political Polarization in Pakistan: A Case Study of Pakistani Youth

Globally, political polarization is rising, and Pakistan is experiencing a significant increase in this phenomenon. Today's political elites, elected politicians, and common people are all divided. Due to the differences in political viewpoints, beliefs, and attitudes under the immense influence of social media, Pakistan's youth are today politically polarized. The public has shifted away from more even-handed political programming to more adversarial and one-sided broadcasts and articles as a result of the contemporary, fragmented, high-choice environment in the social media. These shows frequently draw partisan viewers who use the polarized programming as a form of ideological confirmation. The study emphasizes the function and significance of social media algorithms, which are crucial in updating users' news feeds and delivering content in line with their search habits. The study concludes with the formulation of effective countermeasures and detailed plans on how to counter this growing threat by employing different methods instead of traditional and conventional methods, which typically divide the public and the government functionaries. An Evaluation of the Effect of Social Media Platforms on the General Population's Decision-Making About Cosmetic Procedures in Makkah City, Saudi Arabia.

Background and objective Aesthetic procedures are one of the most commonly performed medical procedures. Surgical and non-surgical cosmetic treatments that are routinely performed include breast augmentations, rhinoplasty, botulinum toxin, and fillers. Several factors contribute to the increase in the popularity of these procedures, including body image dissatisfaction, the opinion of peers, and surgeon-related factors such as the surgeon's reputation, board certification, or years of experience. In addition, recent evidence suggests that active and passive usage of highly visual social media that focuson appearance-centric contenthave been positively associated with the acceptance of, and desire for, cosmetic procedures. In this study, we aimed to investigate the influence of social media on individuals' decision-making in terms of cosmetic procedures. Method The setting for this population-based cross-sectional study waspublic places in Makkah City, Saudi Arabia, and it was conducted from September to November 2021. Our study includedadults above the age of 18 years. The exclusion criteria were as follows: non-Arabic speakers and individuals with congenital anomalies or dysmorphic dermatological diseases.The final sample consisted of 364 participants. All analyses were carried out using IBM SPSS Statistics version 28 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). Continuous and categorical variables were compared using ANOVA and Pearson's Chi-squared test. Result A total of 364 participants were included in the study, and 80% of them used their phones on a daily basis for>4 hours per week. The mean age of the participants was 27.4 ± 8.3 years, and they had a mean BMI of 25.0 ± 6.4 kg/m2; 60% of the participants were female. Participants with a history of cosmetic procedures or a desire to undergo cosmetic procedures reported a similar pattern of daily phone use. There was no significant association between the reported history of cosmetic procedures and the daily duration of selected social media platform use. Conclusion We found no significant correlation between the hours spent on social media and the participants' history or desire for cosmetic procedures. Only 54 subjects compared themselves to social media celebrities. These findings could be attributed to the fact that the Makkah population is conservative in their religious attitudes and traditions, which makes them less susceptible to social media influences.

In this digital era, social media has become an effective communication tool to make it easier for the public to find information and also as a tool to convey ideas and educate the younger generation. By utilizing the role of social media to educate the public about understanding the principles of the Qur'an. This article aims to explore the role of Islamic Cyber Youth in the publication of the Al-Quran through social media. With the development of information technology and the use of social media platforms as a means to share
 the understanding of Al-Quran verses, and interpretations, to the younger generation. Through content analysis and literature search, this study describes how Islamic Cyber Youth uses social media to present and disseminate the Koran to a wider audience, both within the Muslim community and among non-Muslims. The results of this study indicate that Islamic Cyber Youth often publishes quotes, and personal views on Al-Quran verses on social media sites such as Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube. They actively discussed, commented, and exchanged ideas and personal experiences about the Qur'an which affects everyday life. Islamic Cyber Youth acts as an advocate and educational media as well as interpreter of Islamic principles contained in the Al-Quran into a context and language that is more relatable and easily understood by the younger generation.

Platforms for helping: Companies’ CSR communication and consumers’ response on Weibo during the pandemic lockdown

The current study examined companies’ use of social media platforms for CSR communication during the pandemic lockdown. We examined 1768 companies’ posts on Weibo and tested how the content and the features of the posts influenced retweets and likes. We used “fit” to describe a circumstance where an outside factor made a certain business more capable to alleviate the situation. We defined it as high in the perceived firm-situation fit. Results showed that for high-fit companies, the inclusion of pandemic content and CSR had a significant positive effect on retweets, while for low-fit companies, pandemic content hurt the number of retweets; the CSR factor did not influence retweets. The inclusion of CSR information had a significant positive effect on likes for both high-fit and low-fit companies. The results indicated that consumers have more moral expectations of high-fit companies to provide help during the pandemic lockdown. Moreover, increased interactivity has a significant positive effect on retweets and likes. Drawing from these results, practical suggestions on how to use social media platforms for future CSR communication to promote social good were also discussed.

Investigating the Impact of Social Media Usage on the Mental Health of Young Adults in Buffalo City, South Africa

In South Africa, social media usage has consistently increased over time, with young individuals being the most active users. However, there are concerns about mental illness, such as depression, as a result of the surge in social comparison. This study explored the relationship between social media usage and mental health among young adults in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality. This study used a quantitative research approach and was based on the positivism paradigm. Data was collected from 127 young individuals aged 14 to 35 who live in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality through the use of structured questionnaires. The data collected was analysed using a descriptive statistical package for the social sciences. The findings of the study amongst others showed that the young adults spend an average of 6 hours per day on social media platforms. Also, the fear of missing out (FoMO) was identified as another major reason why young adults stay on social media platforms for long hours every day. Based on the results presented in this study, one can convincingly state that the excessive use of social media is negatively contributing to the mental health status of young adults. Some of these detrimental impacts include depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, suicide and other mental health issues. The study recommends amongst others that an urgent and continuous well-structured awareness campaign be made to help sensitise the young adults on the danger of excessive use of social media platforms, both on their mental health status and life in general.

Utilization of Chatbot as Non-Print Materials for the Enhancement of Teaching Instruction in Electromagnetism in Grade 10

This study tries to evaluate the Chatbot as a non-print material to enhance the teaching instruction in electromagnetism in grade 10 students and to respond to the difficulties experienced by teachers and students in teaching electromagnetism. This study was done with selected students of San Mateo National High School involving 20 students who are currently studying Science 10. A survey was also conducted by the researchers in identifying the possible competency and topics that became the focus of this research. This research used the ADDIE model in developing and utilizing the Chatbot as the non-print instructional material for the enhancement of teaching instruction in electromagnetism in Science 10. The researchers focused on the five (5) stages of the ADDIE model which includes analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. In conclusion, this research provides a reference that by utilizing chatbots as non-print instructional material, an educator will engage the online learner nurture a successful learning community, make proper use of social media platforms, and alleviate the frustration and fear that goes along with learning electromagnetism. As a result of the evaluation, a chatbot is easy to use, more on online learning, can learn faster using a chatbot, and can learn things while using Facebook and Messenger. Use of social media and perception of body image and sense of coherence

Introduction and objective: One of the important factors that affect body perception is the beauty and body standards promoted by media and culture. Social media use can affect users' self-perception and sense of coherence. The study aimed to assess whether and how social media impact for body perception and sense of coherence. Materials and methods: The study was conducted using an online questionnaire with a sample of 190 individuals, differentiated by gender. The Sense of Coherence Scale (SOC-29), Body Esteem Scale for Adolescents and Adults (BESAA), and a questionnaire developed for the study were utilized. Results: In the study group, as the daily time spent on social media increased, the sense of manageability (rho = -0.171, p = 0.018) and meaningfulness (rho = -0.166, p = 0.022), as well as the overall coherence score (rho = -0.155, p = 0.033), decreased. Longer usage of social media platforms was associated with lower scores on the appearance scale (rho= -0.260; p<0.001) and weight scale (rho= -0.240; p=0.001), while remaining independent of the scores on the attribution scale (p>0.05). Conclusions: The study shows that excessive use of social media can lead to a deterioration in body image and the amount of time spent on social media can contribute to the level of coherence. Conclusions highlight the need for implementing measures for the safe use of social media platforms and introducing psychoeducation on self-worth, body acceptance, and a sense of coherence, especially among young individuals.

When Digital and Physical World Combine: The Metaverse and Gamification of Violent Extremism

From early Bulletin Board Systems adopted by neo-Nazis to the Islamic State’s more recent prolific use of social media platforms, an aspect of terrorism studies that is generally agreed upon is that violent extremists are often early adopters of emerging technologies. These groups, organisations, and networks have demonstrated innovative uses of these digital spaces, harnessed for recruitment, coordination, community building, attack planning, propaganda dissemination, and other purposes. Alongside studying these phenomena, it is important to explore where future trends lie; particularly as findings and recommendations can ensure that relevant stakeholders are aware of and can begin to prepare for emerging threats. This paper considers the potential exploitation of Web 3.0, specifically the metaverse, by violent extremists and explores conceivable opportunities to undertake nefarious activities within these spaces. There is a particular focus on the gamification of violent extremism in the metaverse, an issue—i.e. the gamification of violent extremism—that is causing increasing concern to terrorism practitioners more generally. Although it is difficult to predict exactly how violent extremists will utilise, exploit, and misuse the metaverse and related technologies due to the early stage of its conceptualisation and development, it is possible to develop hypotheses based on past trends and current examples demonstrating manipulation of online spaces that resemble aspects of the metaverse. In fact, aspects of the gamification of violent extremism in the metaverse may well have distinct overlaps with current threats, but simply utilise emerging technologies and take place within developing and more immersive online spaces.

Social media platforms in sustainability communication of Polish social enterprises from the IT industry and beyond

Abstract The article aims to identify and compare behaviour patterns of Polish social enterprises, especially those operating in the IT branch and using social media to communicate with their clients. The research consisted of a multidimensional qualitative and quantitative content analysis, including Cramér’s V correlation coefficient based on chi-squared statistic, also suitable for nominal data types. The article focused on client communication content created and placed on social media by Polish social enterprises from the IT and other branches. The research sample comprised 301 entities. According to the adopted assumption, the statistical research (correlation analysis) results showed certain behaviour patterns within the scope of the analysed area and revealed significant circumstances that affect communication. Due to the profile of professional competencies, the IT industry prefers communicating via social media, which aims to formulate a concise and precise message. Social enterprises in the group of the most economically effective entities have a unique way of using social media. They choose the most popular social media and, at the same time, to some extent, expand their communication to more specialised platforms. The applied approach is a new way to analyse social enterprise activities in social media. The analysis findings contribute to a greater understanding of connections between the discussed phenomena. The presented research procedure can be applied to determine the impact of other competencies of the analysed entities on sustainability communication in social media. According to research, IT entities enrich the current trends in social media use by social enterprises. The research results may be useful for banks, investors and public institutions forecasting the success of social enterprises and making support-related decisions. The scale and scope of the use of social media platforms for communication with the market may be a criterion in measuring the chances to commercialise goods and services offered by social enterprises.

New Patterns of Internal Communication in Public Organization: A Case Study of Saudi Arabia

Given the nature of public organizations environments compared to private organizations, integrating the use of social media platforms in internal communication follows a slow-based trend compared to private organizations. This paper examines the use of new patterns instead of traditional ways of communication for internal communication within public organizations from employees’ perspective. Using a quantitative research approach and adopting the systems theory, which offers a means of conceptualizing the functions within an organization, this research uses Saudi Arabia as a case study to survey selected sample of public employees in the country and to test the hypotheses of the relationship between the new pattern of communication (i.e. social media) and work efficiency, productivity and employee engagement, as well as whether public organization employees prefer to use modern / new pattern of communications in all aspects of internal communication. This paper establishes three main findings which are: there is a significant positive relationship between the use of modern/new pattern of communication and work efficiency and productivity, public organizations’ employees prefer to use modern/new pattern of communication in all aspects of internal communication and there is no significant positive relationship between employee engagement through social media and improved relationships in the organization. A list of recommendations based on the study’s findings were established to be considered by public administration leaders (specially in Saudi Arabia). Finally, limitations of this study along with future research suggestions were provided.

Analysing sentiment change detection of Covid-19 tweets

The Covid-19 pandemic made a significant impact on society, including the widespread implementation of lockdowns to prevent the spread of the virus. This measure led to a decrease in face-to-face social interactions and, as an equivalent, an increase in the use of social media platforms, such as Twitter. As part of Industry 4.0, sentiment analysis can be exploited to study public attitudes toward future pandemics and sociopolitical situations in general. This work presents an analysis framework by applying a combination of natural language processing techniques and machine learning algorithms to classify the sentiment of each tweet as positive, or negative. Through extensive experimentation, we expose the ideal model for this task and, subsequently, utilize sentiment predictions to perform time series analysis over the course of the pandemic. In addition, a change point detection algorithm was applied in order to identify the turning points in public attitudes toward the pandemic, which were validated by cross-referencing the news report at that particular period of time. Finally, we study the relationship between sentiment trends on social media and, news coverage of the pandemic, providing insights into the public’s perception of the pandemic and its influence on the news.

Social media and business innovation capabilities toward enhancing firm's performance: an empirical research from environmental quality approach

PurposeThe aim of this study is to provide a further understanding of how and when social media (SM) boosts firm performance (FP) by exploring the mediation role of business innovation capabilities (BI) and firm competitiveness (FC) in the link between SM and FP.Design/methodology/approachThis study uses a quantitative approach using small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in emerging market as an empirical field of research. The population of this study is the management level of SMEs and professionals. This study surveyed 425 samples to get primary data for quantitative analysis. This study uses Smart PLS SEM version 3.3.2 to analyze the collected data.FindingsThis study found that SM directly and indirectly affects FP through BI and FC. Besides, BI and FC mediated the relationship between SM and FP.Originality/valueThe originality of this study lies in the operationalization of an unexplored integrated framework using SMEs in emerging market as an empirical field of research from the perspective of combination of diffusion of innovations theory and resource advantage theory. This study thus provides a new approach to the potential of SM for business innovation capabilities oriented toward sustainability. Drawing on the findings of this study, theoretical and managerial implications are proposed which may be of great interests to business practitioners, business owners, business directors and managers to operate their organizations efficiently through making optimal use of SM platforms.
