THE HISTORY OF THE LUZHNIKI STADIUM: FROM THE SETTLEMENT TO THE ARENA

The article examines the history of the territory of the Moscow settlement, which was called “Luzhniki”. The article analyzes versions of the name of this area. The author in his article touches on the history of the Novodevichy Convent ensemble. The article examines the process of settling the territory of Luzhniki, how the appearance of Luzhniki has changed over several centuries. The natural features of the Luzhniki territory are analyzed in detail. The article examines the history of the construction of the main sports arena of the Soviet state. The author analyzes the social conditionality of the creation of this unique sports complex, which has become one of the main symbols of the city.

Effects of training load on heart rate variability and blood pressure in track and field athletes and skiers

BACKGROUND: Adaptation of human body to the harsh conditions of the European North remains a topic of ongoing interest, despite numerous studies on the subject. There is a need to study population groups whose daily activities involve physical activity in extreme northern conditions. One such group includes athletes who participate in endurance sports. For athletes engaged in cyclical sports, competitive activities becomes can be particularly demanding, requiring sustained physical exertion and maximum power generation. Training and competing in harsh conditions place significant strain on the body’s cardiovascular regulation mechanisms. Over time, this may result in detrimental structural and biochemical changes in the cardiovascular system. AIM: To identify the patterns of changes in heart rate regulation among track and field athletes and skiers after a training load. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Athletes from the Arkhangelsk region, including skiers and track and field athletes in the mass sports categories, who regularly compete in regional events, took part in the study. The studies took place in the medical offices of sports complexes, where the UPFT-1/30“Psychophysiologist” device was used to record and analyze cardiointervalograms. Blood pressure was recorded before and after training sessions using the Criticare System 8100H monitor. RESULTS: The initial variational span (VR) values of the duration of cardio intervals before exercise were slightly lower than the reference values in both the group of skiers and the group of athletes. At the same time, the mean square deviation (SD) values initially fell within normal range. Following the training load, both groups experienced a statistically significant decrease in SD and VR values, falling below the lower limit of the permissible range. Furthermore, spectral analysis of the cardiac intervals before exercise indicated a high level of neurohumoral regulation. After exercise, there was a statistically significant decrease in the initial values of TP in both groups, aligning with the average level of neurohumoral regulation. CONCLUSION: The results obtained in track and field athletes with a predominant anaerobic training load and skiers with a predominant aerobic load suggest that the training load of a predominantly aerobic nature may lead to less pronounced stress on the regulatory systems. This hypothesis was further supported by the results of the changes in blood pressure.

Low frequency sound limits for live amplified outdoor music

The Rock Sports Complex (ROC) in Franklin, Wisconsin contains a number of outdoor recreational facilities, including a minor league baseball stadium, a drive-in movie theater, an outdoor concert venue, practice fields, and a ski hill. Residents adjacent to and up to one and a half miles from the ROC have reported disturbances from sound generated by the facility both inside and outside of their homes. A sound study was undertaken to understand these concerns and to make recommendations for thresholds to be used to balance the desire for facility events with the concerns of nearby residents and businesses. One focus of this effort was the quantification of low frequency (~63 Hz) music from the outdoor concert venue at surrounding residences. This paper discusses the low frequencies generated by the facility, as measured in the surrounding communities, and how they compare to noise ordinances for other US municipalities.

Problems in the organization and implementation of the «Ready for work and defense» complex (GTO) in kindergartens in Surgut

Relevance. One of the ways to improve the state policy on physical culture and sports, optimize physical education and preserve the health of the population of all age groups is the implementation of the AllRussian Physical Culture and Sports Complex "Ready for Work and Defense". According to the decree of the President of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation, together with the executive authority at all levels, must carry out all necessary measures to implement the TRP complex. Analyzing the program and regulatory documents, we learned that the main directions of implementing the standards of the VFSK "GTO" are: ensuring the process of preparing citizens to meet the requirements of the GTO complex, including the organization of testing centers, medical support, the implementation of measures to stimulate citizens in meeting the standards of the complex and others.The purpose of the study: to identify negative factors hindering the implementation of the TRP complex in preschool organizations by interviewing physical education teachers.Methods and organization of the research: to solve the task, an anonymous survey was conducted among teachers in Surgut. 31 listeners took part in the survey. One of the directions of the study was to identify the state of the material and technical base at the place of work. Addressing this problem has led to the fact that preparing for the performance of tests (tests) of the TRP complex also implies the need for independent studies.The results of the study. We have formulated the following question: to what extent, in your opinion, does the organization of existing sports facilities and recreational areas with the necessary sports equipment and equipment for training, including independent preparation for the performance of tests (tests) of the TRP complex, correspond to your work. The answer was supposed to be correlated with the proposed scale. The results of the survey are shown in the diagram.Conclusions. The implementation of the TRP program and the possibilities of stimulating interest in it should become an important task for the formation of a healthy and active lifestyle and physical activity of the population. Working to increase awareness of GTO among employers and employees and creating the most appropriate remuneration system can contribute to achieving this goal.

Role of Recreational Facilities in Community Well-Being in India

Purpose: The aim of the study was to assess the role of recreational facilities in community well-being in India. Methodology: This study adopted a desk methodology. A desk study research design is commonly known as secondary data collection. This is basically collecting data from existing resources preferably because of its low cost advantage as compared to a field research. Our current study looked into already published studies and reports as the data was easily accessed through online journals and libraries. Findings: The study revealed that, ranging from parks and playgrounds to community centers and sports complexes, serve as focal points for social interaction, physical activity, and cultural exchange within neighborhoods. Studies indicate that access to such amenities correlates with improved mental and physical health outcomes, reduced stress levels, and increased community cohesion. Furthermore, recreational facilities often contribute to crime prevention by providing safe spaces for leisure activities and fostering a sense of belonging among residents. Their presence can also enhance property values and attract businesses, thus contributing to overall community development. As vital components of urban planning and public infrastructure, investing in and maintaining recreational facilities is essential for fostering healthier, happier, and more connected communities. Implications to Theory, Practice and Policy: Social capital theory, place attachment theory and ecological systems theory may be used to anchor future studies on assessing the role of recreational facilities in community well-being in India. Design and implement community-driven initiatives to enhance the accessibility, inclusivity, and quality of recreational facilities, ensuring that they meet the diverse needs and preferences of residents across different demographic groups and geographic contexts. Advocate for policies and funding mechanisms that prioritize investments in recreational infrastructure as integral components of urban planning and development strategies, recognizing their essential role in promoting public health, social cohesion, and economic vitality.

Organizational work and adoption of standards of the All-Russian Sports Society “Ready for Labor and Defense” (GTO) in an educational organization

Relevance. Currently, the competence of health-saving behavior is indicated in all areas of educational activity. It correlates with the upbringing of the younger generation of a health culture, which means not only health literacy, but also the practical embodiment of the need to lead a healthy lifestyle, take responsibility for yourself and take care of your own health. Methods and organization of research are the essence of aspects of health-saving pedagogy, according to which the consistent formation of a healthy environment at school, college, and institute involves the use and possession by teachers of technologies that do not harm health. The results of the study. For the first time, such a large-scale event was held, where teachers of the Yekaterinburg Institute of Physical Culture, together with the judging panel of the Kalininets Sports and Recreation Complex, conducted a Sports quest, and participants in the quest to fulfill the standards of the TRP were both students of the college and the Institute of Physical Culture, as well as physical education teachers of schools in Yekaterinburg. Conclusions: The focus of attention when introducing the WFSK TRP into the education system should be not only the actual preparation for the implementation of standards, but also the formation of a physical culture of the individual, which is advisable to carry out through spiritual and moral, patriotic education and tourism and local history activities as an element of spiritual, moral and patriotic education.

Immediate Effects of Instrument-Assisted Soft-Tissue Mobilization Versus Dry Needling on Trigger Point Pain and Tightness of Calf Muscles in Long-Distance Runners.

Introduction Muscle tightness is frequently identified as a potential precursor to muscle injuries. Reclaiming flexibility and enhancing range of motion (ROM) is crucial for preventing injuries and achieving improvements in performance.The present study examines the immediate effects of instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilization (IASTM) and dry needling (DN) in reducing trigger point pain and calf tightness in long-distance runners. Methodology A total of 40 long-distance runners were recruited in the study (30 males and 10 females). The procedure was performed under the author's surveillance at the sports complex. These recruited players were placed into two groups: the IASTM (n=20) and the DN (n=20) group.The outcome measures used were the pressure algometer for assessing pain pressure threshold and the lunge test. An iPhone Measure app (Measure app, Apple App Store 2023) is used to assess ankle dorsiflexion ROM. The evaluation took place both prior to and immediately following the interventionand 48 hours after the intervention. Result The analysis within each group revealed a significant alteration in pain pressure threshold for both the IASTM and DN groups (p≤0.05), along with a relative enhancement in ankle dorsiflexion ROMobserved in the IASTM group (p≤0.05). Between-group analysis revealed a notable difference with an effect size difference of Cohen's d=1.06 (large difference) in pain pressure threshold, d=0.21 (small difference) in lunge test, and d=0.57 (medium difference) in ankle dorsiflexion ROM. Conclusion The present study concludes that both groups, IASTM and DN, showed significant effects in improving pain pressure threshold in long-distance runners. However, DN showed better results. IASTM showed significant results in enhancing the ankle dorsiflexion ROM immediately. This implies thatit can be used in conjunction with stretching to decrease pain and enhance flexibility, hence improving performance and preventing injuries.

Adventure Tourism in Bilaspur: A Framework for Assessment and Strategic Development

Abstract:- This research paper investigates the state of adventure tourism in Himachal Pradesh’s Bilaspur district, employing the NIRVANA framework for assessment and strategic development. The assessment and planning process within this framework aims to cultivate a state of perfect peace and happiness akin to "Nirvana'' by fostering sustainable development practices. Through a broad analysis of Bilaspur's adventure tourism potential, encompassing Natural Resources and Geography; Infrastructure, Accessibility, and Investment; Risk, Regulation, and Marketing; Visitor Experience Management; Community Engagement; Sustainability and Conservation; collaboration; and monitoring thereof. Utilizing a combination of destination survey, secondary research, data extraction from published sources, and primary data acquisition from authorities, practitioners, and subject experts of the region this study was analyzed within the specified framework. Findings indicate Bilaspur's rich natural landscapes and existing adventure infrastructure, such as paragliding sites and water sports complexes, position it as a promising adventure tourism destination. However, challenges in investment, risk management, market understanding, and marketing persist. Recommendations include enhancing infrastructure, diversifying investment sources, improving risk management practices, and implementing targeted marketing strategies. The study contributes to the understanding of adventure tourism development, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach that respects natural and cultural heritage while promoting sustainable and innovative practices.

Development of physical qualities of high school students in the football section of the school sports club

Introduction. According to the World Study of School Physical Education, sports games, gymnastics and athletics make up almost 80% of physical education curricula in primary and secondary schools. Possibilities of using certain types of sports games, for example, football, in the physical education of high school students are not sufficiently considered. The study aims to determine the effective methodology for developing the physical qualities of high school students in the football section of the school sports club. Materials and methods of research. 20 students aged 16 took part in the experiment. The research work was carried out at the Secondary School of the Betty-Mokhk village of Nozhai-Yurtovsky district, the Chechen Republic (Russian Federation). A sectional group was formed from the students of the experimental group (10 people), which, in addition to the school physical education program, additionally played football at the school sports club. The total volume of the educational and training program was 144 hours. Methods of mathematical statistic were the arithmetic mean and Student's t-test. Research results. The experimental methodology was developed in the form of an educational and training program for football based on a standard sports training program for football players aged 15-17 by the Russian Football Union and recommended for football sports training organizations in the Russian Federation. During the experiment, testing was carried out according to the standards included in the All-Russian Physical Culture and Sports Complex ‘Ready for Labor and Defense’ to identify the level of physical fitness of students. Comparative analysis and mathematical processing of the experiment results showed statistically significant changes in indicators of agility (t = 3.9; p < 0.01), speed (t = 2.3; p < 0.05), endurance (t = 2.9; p < 0.05), strength (t = 3.8; p < 0.01), and flexibility (t = 3.3; p < 0.01). Conclusion. The data obtained demonstrate the positive dynamics of the methodology for a sportsoriented approach through football in sectional classes within the school’s sports club. This proves the effectiveness of the chosen method, namely increasing the volume of physical activity through sectional work in the school sports club, taking into account the interests of students in physical education and sports activities.

Institutional work as response to institutional complexities in hybrid elite sport and sport for all organizations

ABSTRACT Research question This study aimed to examine how actors across different organizational levels respond to institutional complexity when facilitating elite sport and sport for all. By applying institutional work to understand responses to institutional complexity better, we examined the individual actors’ organizational roles and why and how they transformed the complexity in performing day-to-day work. Research methods Data were collected in a bottom-up approach using qualitative focus groups and in-depth interviews. 149 representatives within Norwegian sport organizations contributed to the study, including coaches, club managers, directors, managers in national sport organizations, and the president of the Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and Confederation of Sports (NIF) Results and findings Institutional complexity is differently characterized at the different organizational levels. One common issue across levels is that the institutional complexity of sport for all and elite sport is seen as challenging, especially in the local sport clubs where institutional logics turn into day-to-day activity. The main source of the challenge is unifying the youth players and practitioners’ different skills and ambitions, which propagates upwards in the organization. How actors respond to complexity varies within the organizational levels and the different sports. Tensions stemming from complexity are often neglected by the political argument of ‘the trickle down and up effects’, which to a considerable extent lacks empirical evidence. Implications We recommend local sport managers prioritize expectation management to counteract a conflict of interests between institutional logics. It is necessary that national governing bodies better align their policies with the interest and organizational capacity of local clubs.

OCCURRENCE OF LOWER EXTREMITY MUSCULOSKELETAL INJURIES DURING THE LOCKDOWN IN ATHLETES

Background of the Study: Lockdown was implemented worldwide to limit the spread of COVID-19. This sudden implementation of lockdown causes significant lifestyle changes for every individual. Along with the general population, it also has psychological, behavioral, and physical consequences on athletes. The study objective is to determine the occurrence of lower extremity musculoskeletal injuries during the COVID-19 lockdown in athletes. Methodology: Retrospective cross-sectional study design was used, and participants were recruited by a non-probability convenient sampling technique. A sample size of 147 was taken as calculated by the Raosoft software, and the study was completed 6 months. Both male and female athletes between the age group of 18-35 years, participants who did not participate in any official training session during the lockdown and registered at domestic level for at least 2 years were recruited from Pakistan Sports Board and Wapda Sports Complex Lahore. Data was collected using a semi-structured questionnaire. Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire was used to identify the problematic painful areas of body. Data entry, analysis, and interpretation were done by using SPSS software version 22.0. Results: The mean age and BMI of participants were 25.6531±4.49 (years) and 23.28±3.24 (kg/m2) respectively. From the total, 39.5% of participants reported lower extremity musculoskeletal injuries. And most reported problematic areas include lower back and knee. 75% of participants continue to do workouts at home as a prevention strategy against injury occurrence. Conclusion: This concluded that the occurrence of lower extremity musculoskeletal injuries during the lockdown was moderate. The article proposes a hypothesis for using the GTO as an alternative means for assessing EMERCOM of Russia employees’ physical fitness. The purpose of the research is to confirm the proposed hypothesis. In the research a comparative analysis of criteria for assessing physical qualities through control physical exercises by age categories of the GTO and EMERCOM of Russia has been conducted; high level of requirements for the standards of the All-Russian Physical Culture and Sports Complex “Ready for Labor and Defense” (GTO) has been identified, which corresponds to approving the proposed hypothesis; the need to amend regulations governing assessment criteria for the personnel of Federal Fire Service of State Fire Service of EMERCOM of Russia has been substantiated. As a result of the study, it has been perceived that the fact of receiving the “golden badge” of the GTO should be verified when passing tests assessing the level of physical fitness of EMERCOM of Russia employees.

Introduction. There is a gap in the scientific literature in the description of the history of the city of Pyatigorsk, which was the center of the North Caucasus Region (NCR) in 1934 – May 1937. Based on the prospect of expanding the city towards the Lermontov junction area, the first secretary of the regional committee of the CPSU(b), who recently headed the state security agencies of the NCR, together with his former subordinates, facilitated the construction of a large sports complex “Dynamo”. However, information about this object, which did not exist after the end of the Great Patriotic War, is missing in the local history literature. Materials and methods. The study is based on the analysis of materials from the collections of the Pyatigorsk Museum of Local Lore, the State Archive of the Stavropol Krai, primarily regional periodicals of the period under review (newspapers “Severo-Kavkazskiy Bolshevik”, “Ordzhonikidzevskaya Pravda”, etc.). The study uses a systematic integrated approach, specific historical and comparative historical methods. Analysis. The analysis showed that Yefim Evdokimov, even after his appointment as the first secretary of the regional committee of the CPSU(b), continued to remain the unspoken head of the “North Caucasian team” of OGPU–NKVD workers who were in leadership positions in the Center, in different regions of the country, and naturally in the North Caucasus Region. The Dynamo Sports Complex named after E. G. Evdokimov was directly supervised by the regional security authorities, who ensured the construction of the facility in the shortest possible time. Results. According to the results of the study, it can be concluded that the transfer of the regional center to Voroshilovsk (Stavropol) did not allow the implementation of the construction project of the Belaya Romashka district, of which the Dynamo stadium could become an integral part. This area, as noted above, remained an urban suburb until the end of the 1950s. Due to the fact that the region and the city were led by Soviet and Party leaders (Evdokimov, Pivovarov, etc.), repressed in the second half of the 1930s, the Dynamo sports complex in Pyatigorsk ceased to exist, and the name of its founder was forgotten.

Assessment of Factors Influencing Urban Development; A Case Study of Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University Campus

Our cities have been rapidly developing both vertically and horizontally in recent years due to the increasing urban population, advancing technology, and the desire to utilize urban investment areas. The direction of urban development is determined by many factors such as social, cultural, economic, and transportation, which influence and shape the cities’ growth. In addition to these factors, structures with high usage attractiveness such as hospitals, shopping malls, sports complexes, and university campuses play a significant role in directing the development of the city. This study evaluates the impact of Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University Campus on the direction of urban development and determines whether it has the potential to accelerate urban transformation and urban sprawl. In the study, the university’s historical process was evaluated, and breakpoints where the number of students, faculties, and departments increased in campus development were determined. Based on these breakpoints, the direction of urban development in Niğde city was evaluated using geographic information systems (GIS) and satellite images from the specified dates to assess the development direction of residential areas.

This article examines the effectiveness of circuit training for increasing the functional fitness of athletes who specialize in hand-to-hand combat. Circuit training is aimed at developing a specific skill, muscle group or general physical condition. This form of training involves participants taking turns going through several stations, performing various exercises for a limited time or number of repetitions, one after the other, with minimal rest between them, until the entire cycle is completed. There are different ways to organize circuit training, but they usually involve multiple movements, such as bodyweight exercises, weights, and dynamic exercises. The purpose of the study is to increase the level of functional readiness at the stage of initial sports specialization. The study is based on the analysis of training results and physiological indicators of athletes after the implementation of this technique. The results allow us to draw a conclusion about the effectiveness of circuit training in the training of arm wrestling athletes. The research was conducted on the basis of the sports complex of the National Academy of the State Border Service named after B. Khmelnytskyi among the cadets of the educational institution. Athletes were divided into control (CG) and experimental (EG) groups. Classes were conducted under equal conditions, in the same sports hall and had the same duration. There were no significant differences in the indicators of the functional fitness of athletes revealed before the pedagogical experiment. The testing conducted after three months revealed differences in the indicators of functional readiness. In this way, faster recovery of EG athletes after speed-strength load compared to CG athletes was found. Also, CG athletes had insufficient recovery during rest breaks, their breathing was confused and uneven. The conducted pedagogical experiment made it possible to obtain data confirming the effectiveness of the methodology, according to which EG was engaged in, and to substantiate the importance of functional training of athletes engaged in hand-to-hand combat by means of circular training.

The Issues and Challenges of Facility Management and Maintenance for Sports Complex Facilities in Malaysia

Sports complexes facilities in Malaysia are specialized venues built to accommodate a variety of sports and recreational activities. Malaysia, as a country with a rising interest in sports and a goal of building a healthy and active populace, has invested in the construction of several sport complex facilities around the country. Sports complexes are so important for promoting sports and recreation activities, it is important that they are managed effectively to ensure their long-term sustainability and optimal functionality. This is why the research study intend and aim an investigating the issues and challenges related to facility management and maintenance at Malaysian sports complexes through this study. The research study examines the problems faced by facility managers and maintenance teams caused by technical restrictions, human resource management, insufficient financing resources, or even substandard infrastructure. There are three objectives of this research study which are to identify the problems and issues in maintaining the sport complex facilities, to determine the challenges of FM roles in implementing, maintaining and improving the sports complex facilities and to suggest the strategies to improve FM in maintaining the sports complex facilities. A thorough examination of the literature, surveys and questionnaires were conducted to identify the major issues that facility management practices face, and recommendations for potential solutions were made as a result of this study. The findings of this study help to clarify the particular difficulties of FM in maintaining Malaysian sports complex facilities. In addition, to improving the overall user experience, resolving these problems will help the nation establish a healthy sports culture.

The article examines the issues of improving the quality and standard of living of the population of rural Russia. The relevance of this problem is associated with a large number of negative phenomena in rural settlements in terms of socio-economic shortcomings over a long period of ongoing transformations. This is especially important because there is a significant differentiation in the social plan of the rural population in terms of meeting material and other needs. The article pays attention to the fact that the solution of these imbalances, as well as the degree to which the rural population is satisfied with their working conditions and well-being, requires radical changes from public authorities at the legislative and executive levels. It analyzes overdue wage arrears, the number of jobs being replaced, the average real length of time worked by employees, the admission and retirement of employees, the distribution of the number of retired employees by various types of retirements, the number of employees who are employed part-time at the enterprise. The study found that the degree of gasification of rural areas, the network of secondary schools, district hospitals, outpatient clinics, as well as FAP, sports complexes and playgrounds have significantly increased. The analysis confirms the need for further in-depth and comprehensive solutions to the accumulated problems through the implementation of strategic goals and objectives to improve and improve the standard and quality of life of the population in rural areas. The article suggests the main directions for improving the welfare of the population in rural areas, as well as their satisfaction with social policy. To do this, it is necessary to achieve sustainable economic development of rural areas, which will create conditions for increasing the income level of the population in rural areas, and as a result of improving the level and quality of life of the population in rural areas.

A Study of the Influence of ESG Performance, Social Influence, Facilitating Conditions, Hedonic Motivation, Price Value and Habit on Tourists’ Behavioural Intentions towards Sports Complexes

This study aims to determine the structural relationships between environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance in sports complexes, along with external factors and motivations (social influence, facilitating conditions, hedonic motivation, price value, habit), with tourists’ behavioural intentions. Design/Method/Approach: To achieve this, a web- based survey was conducted, and after eliminating outliers, data from a total of 541 responses were analysed using the SPSS and AMOS statistical software packages. Findings: The research findings indicate a positive correlation between environmental and social performance in sports complexes, along with external factors and motivations (social influence, facilitating conditions, hedonic motivation, price value, habit), and tourists’ behavioural intentions. Hedonic motivation and habit have been identified as the most crucial. Additionally, past experience moderates the impact of social influence, facilitating conditions, hedonic motivation, price value and habit on tourists’ intentions. Conclusions/Recommendation: This study suggests that enhancing tourists’ hedonic motivation and cultivating consumer habits are crucial for improving tourists’ intentions to visit sports complexes. Furthermore, efforts should be directed towards improving sports complexes’ environmental and social performance, enhancing the social environment and convenience, and increasing their cost- effectiveness to boost tourist intention. Originality/Value: This research represents a significant revision of the UTAUT2 model, expanding its applicability. Moreover, it is the first attempt to employ ESG theory to explain tourists’ behavioural intentions in sports complexes.

Fighting forward: purpose as a form of resilience for combat sport athletes

ABSTRACT Narratives of sport as ‘a way out’ for young people from oppressed backgrounds tend to be over-simplified and linear, with critiques about perceptions of sport as ‘mythopoeic’, and able to overcome the environmental, social, and cultural forces and discourses at play. And yet, narratives of success through sport might be the most accessible for those from oppressed backgrounds or identity groups, where their future stories might be told. This dichotomy has been explored in combat sport, with research that both supports and questions the ‘sport-for-good’ narrative. In this study, we sought to better understand how narratives were told, embodied, and acted out through participation in combat sports. Interviews were conducted with male combat sport athletes who grew up in oppressed communities and who experienced multiple developmental traumas. Through narrative inquiry, three stories were crafted in the form of creative non-fiction portraits that were accessible, emotive, vivid, and embodied – engaging readers in the intimate discovery of unknown worlds in which they may find parts of themselves as well as a deeper understanding and empathy for others. Through these stories, we illuminate the inherent complexity of the role sport plays in the development of individuals, as well as examine a narrative of ‘unfinished’ which challenges and expands our understanding of engagement in combat sport, particularly for those from traumatising and/or oppressed backgrounds. We conclude by examining how purpose serves as an act of resilience for participants in the current study.
