Abstract The bombardment of thin films with energetic ion beams during the growing process (IBAD) may result in either physical, chemical or structural changes in the nature of the film. Many properties which are sensitive to these microstructural aspects can be expected to reflect the bombardment induced changes. We report here on the magnetic and compositional characteristics of iron nitride thin films grown in a nitrogen atmosphere during bombardment with an Ar+ beam.
