The Future of Our Conferences: An Unmissable Opportunity for Outreach? [President’s Message

Welcome to my third column of 2022. It follows the great “President’s Message” invited column by Giovanni Cherubini (IBM Research Zurich, Switzerland) that focused on the impact on big data storage systems of advanced control techniques for magnetic tape drives (see the August 2022 issue of our magazine <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref1" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">[1]</xref> ). Here, I would like to build a virtuous future connection between the Outreach Program of the IEEE Control Systems Society (CSS) and the “new normal” of our conferences I alluded to in my June 2021 “President’s Message” column <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref2" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">[2]</xref> .

In this issue of <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">IEEE Control Systems</i> , we speak with Necmiye Ozay, associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; Giuseppe Notarstefano, professor and director of automation engineering at the Alma Mater Studiorum Università di Bologna; and Sergio Grammatico, an associate professor at the Delft University of Technology.

Distributed Games Over Networks [About This Issue

This issue of <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">IEEE Control Systems</i> includes a special issue on distributed games over networks. Guest Editors Lacra Pavel and Yiguang Hong have assembled four articles for this special issue. The first article, by Tao Li, Guanze Peng, Quanyan Zhu, and Tamer Bas¸ar, provides a systematic treatment of game-theoretic learning methods and their application in network problems, which is key for understanding multiagents.

50 Years of Dissipativity Theory, Part II [About This Issue

This <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">IEEE Control Systems</i> issue continues to celebrate the 50th anniversary of dissipativity theory with a focus on the second part of Jan Willems’ 1972 article. “From the Editor” elaborates on the significance of that article, in particular the relevance of the relaxation property for today’s control theory. Guest editor Arjan van der Schaft has assembled seven articles for this special issue: “Dissipativity, Reciprocity, and Passive Network Synthesis: From the Seminal Dissipative Dynamical Systems Articles of Jan Willems to the Present Day,” by Timothy Hughes and Edward Branford; “Dissipative Dynamical Systems With Set-Valued Feedback Loops: Well-Posed Set-Valued Lur’e Dynamical Systems,” by Bernard Brogliato; “The Analysis of Optimization Algorithms: A Dissipativity Approach,” by Laurent Lessard; “Passive and Reciprocal Networks: From Simple Models to Simple Optimal Controllers,” by Richard Pates; “Dissipativity Theory in Game Theory: On the Role of Dissipativity and Passivity in Nash Equilibrium Seeking,” by Lacra Pavel; “Dissipativity and Integral Quadratic Constraints: Tailored Computational Robustness Tests for Complex Interconnections,” by Carsten Scherer; and “Data-Driven Dissipativity Analysis: Application of the Matrix S-Lemma,” by Henk Van Waarde, Kanat Camlibel, Paolo Rapisarda, and Harry Trentelman. The seven articles are described in the introductory article by guest editor Arjan van der Schaft.

Neuromorphic Control [About This Issue

This issue of <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">IEEE Control Systems</i> includes two features and one “Focus on Education” article. The feature “Neuromorphic Control” draws from the Ph.D. dissertation of my coauthor and former student Luka Ribar. Neuromorphic engineering is a rapidly developing field that takes inspiration from the biological organization of neural systems to develop a novel technology for computing, sensing, and actuating. The unique properties of such systems call for new signal processing and control paradigms. The article discusses the mixed-feedback organization of excitable neuronal systems, which consist of interlocked positive and negative feedback loops acting in distinct time scales. The principles of biological neuromodulation suggest a methodology for designing and controlling mixed-feedback systems neuromorphically.

Correction

This is a correction to the obituary of Dr. Radhakishan Sohanlal Baheti, 1945–2021, which ran in the August issue of IEEE Control Systems ["Dr. Radhakishan Sohanlal Baheti, 1945–2021 [Obituary]," (Chakrabortty, A., et al), IEEE Control Syst., vol. 41, no. 4, pp. 99–102, 2021. doi: 10.1109/MCS.2021.3076545]. We have become aware of a very serious error in the obituary of our friend, the late Kishan Baheti. This error resulted from faulty and confused recollections that were more than 30 years old. Specifically, Kishan never had a smoking habit. The following sentences in the obituary are wrong and should be ignored: "When I first met Kishan, he was a cigarette smoker. One year at a CDC (most probably in San Antonio, Texas), he told me that he had taken up running to break his smoking habit.…I was convinced that he had kicked his smoking and had the lungs to run." We sincerely apologize for any emotional distress this caused.

From Thermodynamics to Opinion Dynamics [About This Issue

This IEEE Control Systems issue includes two features and one “Focus on Education” article. In his feature “Classical Thermodynamics Revisited: A Systems and Control Perspective,” Arjan van der Schaft explains how classical, macroscopic thermodynamics can be naturally understood from a systems and control perspective. The article emphasizes the role of cyclo-dissipativity for the formulation of the first and second law and the analysis of irreversibility. Furthermore, a geometric theory is discussed toward the integration of thermodynamics in modern frameworks for the modeling and control of multiphysics systems.
