ABSTRACTDrug-resistant Shigella sonnei poses a clinical and public health challenge. We report here the high-quality draft whole-genome sequences of four outbreak-associated S. sonnei isolates; three were resistant to two or more antibiotics, and one was resistant to streptomycin only.

Whole-Genome Sequence of the Spodoptera frugiperda Sf9 Insect Cell Line.

ABSTRACTThe draft whole-genome sequence of the Spodoptera frugiperda Sf9 insect cell line was obtained using long-read PacBio sequence technology and Canu assembly. The final assembled genome consisted of 451 Mbp in 4,577 contigs, with 12,716× mean coverage and a G+C content of 36.53%.

Draft Whole-Genome Sequences for Two Pigmentiphaga Isolates Recovered from Human Clinical Materials.

ABSTRACTFeatures from two Pigmentiphaga isolates referred to Canada’s National Microbiology Laboratory from human clinical materials were described previously (N. Bridger, S. Drews, T. Burdz, D. Wiebe, A. L. Pacheco, B. Ng, and K. Bernard, J Med Microbiol 62:708–711, 2013, https://doi.org/10.1099/jmm.0.051615-0). Whole-genome sequencing was performed on strains NML030171 and NML080357; the sequences were found to have 5.86 and 5.73 Mb of clean data and G+C contents of 67.5 and 66.74 mol%, respectively.

Draft Genome Sequences of Seven Streptococcus agalactiae Strains Isolated from Camelus dromedarius at the Horn of Africa.

ABSTRACTWe present draft whole-genome sequences of seven Streptococcus agalactiae strains isolated from Camelus dromedarius in Kenya and Somalia. These data are an extension to the group B Streptococcus (GBS) pangenome and might provide more insight into the underlying mechanisms of pathogenicity and antibiotic resistance of camel GBS.

Draft Genome Sequence of a Porcine Commensal, Rothia nasimurium, Encoding a Nonribosomal Peptide Synthetase Predicted To Produce the Ionophore Antibiotic Valinomycin.

ABSTRACTWe report the draft whole-genome sequence of Rothia nasimurium isolated from a porcine tonsil. The genome encodes a nonribosomal peptide synthetase predicted to produce valinomycin, a cyclic dodecadepsipeptide ionophore. Previously, valinomycin was known to be produced only by Streptomyces species and isolates belonging to the Bacillus pumilus group.

Draft Whole-Genome Sequences of Multidrug-Resistant Escherichia coli O157:H7 Strains Isolated from Feedlot Cattle Treated with Growth-Promoting Agents.

ABSTRACTEnterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli serotype O157:H7 is a major cause of foodborne outbreaks and hemolytic-uremic syndrome. Here, we report the draft genome sequences of three antibiotic-resistant E. coli O157:H7 strains isolated from feedlot cattle. These draft genome sequences will aid in the development of sequence-based tools for the detection of virulence and antimicrobial resistance genotypes.

Whole-Genome Sequence of Pseudomonas fluorescens EK007-RG4, a Promising Biocontrol Agent against a Broad Range of Bacteria, Including the Fire Blight Bacterium Erwinia amylovora.

ABSTRACTHere, we report the first draft whole-genome sequence of Pseudomonas fluorescens strain EK007-RG4, which was isolated from the phylloplane of a pear tree. P. fluorescens EK007-RG4 displays strong antagonism against Erwinia amylovora, the causal agent for fire blight disease, in addition to several other pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria.

ABSTRACTHere, we present the draft whole-genome sequence of Vibrio cholerae O1 El Tor strains 76 and M3265/80, isolated in Mariupol, Ukraine, and Moscow, Russia. The presence of various mutations detected in virulence-associated mobile elements indicates high genetic similarity of the strains reported here with new highly virulent variants of the cholera agent V. cholerae.

Draft Genome Sequence of the Oleaginous Green Alga Tetradesmus obliquus UTEX 393.

ABSTRACTThe microalgae Tetradesmus obliquus is able to maintain a high photosynthetic efficiency under nitrogen limitation and is considered a promising green microalgae for sustainable production of diverse compounds, including biofuels. Here, we report the first draft whole-genome shotgun sequencing of T. obliquus. The final assembly comprises 108,715,903 bp with over 1,368 scaffolds.

Here, we report the draft whole-genome sequence of “Anthococcus,” a novel genus of the family Streptococcaceae isolated from fresh flowers of a durian (Durio zibethinus) tree. The draft genome of Anthococcus sp. strain DF1 contains 2,157,756 bp, with a G+C content of 33.0%.

Draft Whole-Genome Sequence of a Haemophilus quentini Strain Isolated from an Infant in the United Kingdom

Haemophilus quentini is a rare and distinct genospecies of Haemophilus that has been suggested as a cause of neonatal bacteremia and urinary tract infections in men. We present the draft whole-genome sequence of H. quentini MP1 isolated from an infant in the United Kingdom, aiding future identification and detection of this pathogen.

Draft Genome Sequence of Helicobacter suis Strain SNTW101, Isolated from a Japanese Patient with Nodular Gastritis.

We present here the draft whole-genome shotgun sequence of an uncultivated strain SNTW101 of Helicobacter suis, which has been maintained in the stomachs of mice. This strain was originally isolated from gastric biopsy specimens of a urea breath test-negative Japanese patient suffering from nodular gastritis.

Genome-wide differentiation in closely related populations: the roles of selection and geographic isolation.

Population divergence in geographic isolation is due to a combination of factors. Natural and sexual selection may be important in shaping patterns of population differentiation, a pattern referred to as 'isolation by adaptation' (IBA). IBA can be complementary to the well-known pattern of 'isolation by distance' (IBD), in which the divergence of closely related populations (via any evolutionary process) is associated with geographic isolation. The barn swallow Hirundo rustica complex comprises six closely related subspecies, where divergent sexual selection is associated with phenotypic differentiation among allopatric populations. To investigate the relative contributions of selection and geographic distance to genome-wide differentiation, we compared genotypic and phenotypic variation from 350 barn swallows sampled across eight populations (28 pairwise comparisons) from four different subspecies. We report a draft whole-genome sequence for H.rustica, to which we aligned a set of 9493 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Using statistical approaches to control for spatial autocorrelation of phenotypic variables and geographic distance, we find that divergence in traits related to migratory behaviour and sexual signalling, as well as geographic distance, together explain over 70% of genome-wide divergence among populations. Controlling for IBD, we find 42% of genomewide divergence is attributable to IBA through pairwise differences in traits related to migratory behaviour and sexual signalling alone. By (i) combining these results with prior studies of how selection shapes morphological differentiation and (ii) accounting for spatial autocorrelation, we infer that morphological adaptation plays a large role in shaping population-level differentiation in this group of closely related populations.
