Structural features and communication potential of modern serials

Introduction. The mythological structure of the series is determined by structural, semantic and symbolic elements embedded in the communicative process; they represent a kind of filter that depends on all the formal and content components of the series, as well as the cultural field in which it functions. This allows the series to be an active translator of various messages, which, in turn, requires the active participation of the viewer in assigning contents and messages. Relevance of research. The scientific novelty consists in the analysis of the modern TV series as a communicative phenomenon in modern media culture. Based on the analysis of various sources, we tried to describe the structure and identify different communicative strategies of modern serials, a specific serial paradigm that allows satisfying all categories of viewers. The research methodology: we use interdisciplinary approaches to understanding the communication potential of modern TV series: cultural-historical, communication, structural and cultural analysis. Results and discussion. The study of TV series allows us to understand how communicative connections are recreated in the modern socio-cultural environment, what ideological tasks they can fulfill and how they influence the formation of identity. In the series, we can find certain revelations about the norms and dominant ideas of a specific cultural-historical discourse, which in their date allow us to reveal the closed elements of norming, subtexts and contexts, discrimination and inclusion, dominance and subordination, which are organically woven into the structure of the series as a product of mass culture. Conclusions and prospects. In the article, we found out that the increase in the influence and popularity of TV series as a specific cultural form of communication is related to their ability to be an effective sphere of communication space. The communication potential of serials is determined by the structural and content elements, which proved to be capable of structuring the everyday life and identity of a person. The description and analysis of the structural and content elements of the series made it possible to reveal the specific communicative potential of the modern series – to be an active translator of various messages, to form a communicative space, which, in turn, requires the active participation of the viewer in assigning contents and messages.

Multimodalna i digitalna pismenost kao novi koncepti u obrazovanju

The digital age requires each individual to redevelop new skills and many literacy skills in order to function in modern society. Therefore, new concepts are emerging in education that explain what all the skills are necessary in order to adequately perform certain activities in the online environment. One of the modern concepts is multimodality, which is inevitably accompanied by modes, multimodal literacy, and digital, as well as broader literacy. Multimodality is a communication phenomenon that relies on the use of modes, i.e., semiotic resources, whose role is to create meaning. Namely, mods include images, charts, sounds, colours, audio, videos, maps and so on. Their function is to help digital texts convey a specific message in an online environment. In all this, the key role is played by multimodal literacy, which is the ability to successfully work with texts that include different modes, as well as digital literacy, which includes the ability to search, locate, select and analyse digital information. Having in mind that both literacies are interconnected and complementary, the aim of this paper is to draw attention to the mentioned concepts as well as to present their importance for the realization of multimodality in education.

ИНТЕРНЕТ-МЕМЫ С НАЦИОНАЛЬНО-ПОЛИТИЧЕСКИМ ПОДТЕКСТОМ В ВОСПРИЯТИИ МОЛОДЕЖИ

Now the Internet is one of the main means of social communication and information interchange, which is carried out within the framework of the information field created with special technologies. Undoubtedly, in the hands of skilled manipulators the Internet can turn into a rather powerful and dangerous psychological weapon attacking people’s mind. One of such means of mass influence is the meme with national and political content. These comic pic-tures with laconic posts have become the cause for initiation of numerous legal proceedings. The purpose of the re-search is to investigate the opinion range that reflect peculiarities of the youth reaction concerning the Internet-meme with the national and political background and their tolerance level. The scientific novelty of the work is that the author examines the features of Internet memes with national connotations and approaches to identify offensive connota-tions in them. Besides, to reveal the degree of influence of the Internet-memes on recipients and their personal assess-ment of this information and communication phenomenon, anonymous questioning was carried out. The meme is a joke, sneer or criticism expressed by means of certain language means: more often, it is a picture with a laconic phrase spread throughout the Internet by various means. It usually causes particular interest and emotional response in the recipients. It has a certain urgent and topical problem in its background. Thus, the Internet-meme represents certain latent mechanism of speech influence. The basis for criminal prosecution for distributing memes online is primarily Ar-ticle 282 of the Criminal Code of the RF concerning extremism. At present, approaches to linguistic examination of memes are just being developed; it is often hard to prove the presence of offensive and extremist implications in the media object. The analysis of the studied information allows to establish that a meme whose propagation can cause legal proceedings and which represents certain danger to our society should possess the following characteristics: 1) aggression appeal, 2) offensive content, 3) propagation via mass-media and the Internet, 4) net relapse. The carried out experiment leads to the conclusion that Internet-memes are psychological means effective enough to influence peo-ple. Nevertheless, its influence is not equivocal and depends on the recipient’s mood. Undoubtedly, the issue of drawing up criteria for the linguistic analysis of memes to determine their danger to society is extremely relevant.

Echolalia from a transdiagnostic perspective.

Echolalia, the repetition of one's or others' utterances, is a behavior present in typical development, autism spectrum disorder, aphasias, Tourette's, and other clinical groups. Despite the broad range of conditions in which echolalia can occur, it is considered primarily through a disorder-specific lens, which limits a full understanding of the behavior. Empirical and review papers on echolalia across disciplines and etiologies were considered for this narrative review. Literatures were condensed into three primary sections, including echolalia presentations, neural mechanisms, and treatment approaches. Echolalia, commonly observed in autism and other developmental conditions, is assessed, observed, and treated in a siloed fashion, which reduces our collective knowledge of this communication difference. Echolalia should be considered as a developmental, transdiagnostic, and communicative phenomenon. Echolalia is commonly considered as a communicative behavior, but little is known about its neural etiologies or efficacious treatments. This review is the first to synthesize echolalia from a transdiagnostic perspective, which allows for the direct comparisons across and within clinical groups to inform assessment, treatment, conceptualization, and research recommendations. Considering echolalia transdiagnostically highlights the lack of consensus on operationalization and measurement across and within disorders. Clinical and research future directions need to prioritize consistent definitions of echolalia, which can be used to derive accurate prevalence estimates. Echolalia should be considered as a communication strategy, used similarly across developmental and clinical groups, with recommended strategies of shaping to increase its effectiveness.

Commentary Analysis of Chinese Network Novels Based on Wuxiaworld Website

The phenomenon of Chinese Network Literature's external communication has received extensive attention. Корпоративні комунікації в Україні в умовах війни з росією

The objective of the research is to characterize the peculiarities of corporate communications in wartime. Does their intensity change; what are the priority groups of stakeholders, the thematic vectors and tonality, what communication channels are used in such circumstances? The study is based on the online survey of representatives of 63 companies operating in Ukraine under the conditions of a full-scale invasion of the russian federation. The questionnaire contained ten multiple-choice questions and one more, which required a detailed answer regarding the general perception of transformations in corporate communications. Based on this, the model of communication behavior of companies in terms of war was analyzed. The study proves that corporate communications remain a strategically important area of management. At the beginning of a full-scale russian aggression, the Ukrainian companies sought not only to preserve the volume of communications but also to increase it. The priority group of stakeholders for them turned out to be the staff, as well as the customers, business partners, authorities and volunteer organizations. The most common topics are the company news, military assistance, volunteering and employee stories. The communication tonality has changed and is defined as optimistic, motivational, sincere and friendly. In the conditions of restrictions, the companies concentrated on using the social networks, groups and channels in messengers and corporate websites. The value of the research is in the fact that it contributes to expansion of understanding of the phenomenon of crisis corporate communications and, from a practical point of view, directs the companies to search for such approaches and methods of dialogue with stakeholders that help businesses to survive during the war.

Functional parameters of environmental communication

Introduction. The article is devoted to environmental communication, which has been functioning in the global space-time for a long time. The purpose of the survey is to analyze the scope of the concept of "environmental communication", to find out the functions of environmental communication, its subjects, features, types, to analyze the existing models of environmental communication, to identify the largest virtual platforms for environmental communication. Methods. A number of general scientific and linguistic methods were used in the research. In particular, the methods of analysis, synthesis, deduction, induction and the descriptive method are used to justify the theoretical base of the research and generalize the observations. The terminological analysis is applied to the definitions of the concept of "environmental communication" that function in the scientific discourse and the Internet space. The comparative method was used to compare models of environmental communication. Using the method of communicative-pragmatic analysis, the functions of environmental communication were determined. Results and discussion. It was determined that the phenomenon of environmental communication has different scientific treatment in different language traditions. The functioning of the concept of "environmental communication" in the English and Ukrainian scientific paradigms and media space is compared: in the English discourse, the same or similar treatment of this concept is observed, on the other hand, in the Ukrainian scientific discourse, it is used in three different meanings, which, however, have a common seme. A refined definition of the considered concept is proposed. The forms of environmental communication (public, group, interpersonal) and its types (direct and mediated, formal and informal, spontaneous and planned, oral, written and visual, verbal and non-verbal, personal and interpersonal) and its subjects are described, its dual subjectivity and interdisciplinary nature, convergence, cyclicity are emphasized. The functions of environmental communication are distinguished, in particular communicative, epistemological, constitutional-perceptive, interactive, and pragmatic. Models of the structure – linear and convergent – of environmental communication as a subspecies of general communication are considered. Educational and scientific platforms for the exchange of environmentally oriented information were considered. We see the prospects for further research in the following: establish hierarchical relationships between the concepts of "environmental communication" and "environmental discourse"; to reveal the ratio of texts of functional styles in environmental discourse, the structure of Ukrainian environmental discourse, etc.

On Emotions as Features for Speech Overlaps Classification

Although being a frequently occurring phenomenon in spoken communication, speech overlaps did not obtain the deserved attention in research so far—in both Human-Human Interaction (HHI) and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). It is common knowledge that overlaps can figure as a competitive, rude interruption as well as a cooperative, convenient feedback signal giving important insight on the course of the interaction—but how are they related to the internal state of the overlapping speaker or the overlapped speaker? In this paper, we investigate dyadic human-human interactions and focus on the relations between the emotional changes occurring around overlaps in both interaction participants. Further to an in-depth statistical analysis of the changes in control and valence levels with respect to the nature of the overlap, we also present a classification approach based on features derived from such emotional changes surrounding an overlap and compare the classification performance of these features to classic acoustic features. We show that the automatic classification of competitive and cooperative overlaps using the changes in valence and control levels of the overlapping speaker outperforms common approaches employing acoustic and linguistic features.

Humorous effect when linguocultural phenomena are included in forum comments to media texts

The paper is devoted to the possibilities of creating a comic effect based on linguocultural signs and concepts in forum comments to media texts. The problem of the comic is studied in the context of the study of value essences and national-cultural meanings, which form the basis of the worldview of the national-cultural community. The material of the study is forum comments on Bulgarian online media publications or reposts of media articles in social networks. Due to the fact that the specificity of modern online communication is the relativity of the disposition of the author-addressee, the addressee is involved in the discussion of the topic, since both media texts and comments on them are usually read. Forum comments as posts written by the addressee under media texts, create a kind of network communication that allows its participants to evaluate the news or express an opinion about the content of the media text and, in some cases, to simply argue with or without reason. The formation of a comic effect on the basis of linguistic and cultural phenomena in forum communication is an important linguo-mental characteristic of the perception of the world by a national-cultural community, as well as a tool for assessing the preservation of cultural tradition. The analysis of linguocultural material involved in creating a comic effect in comments to media texts demonstrates the presence of several types of precedent, the use of phraseological units (paremias, citations, aphorisms), metaphors and concepts. The “transposition” of linguistic and cultural phenomena is based on the discrepancy between the internal and external image, on the violation of the usual syntagmatic relations of linguistic units, the actualization and modification of frame-slot connections, and the ambivalence of semantic realization. The article is based on the report that is going to be presented at the XVIII International Congress of Slavists in 2025.

Considering the Context to Build Theory in HCI, HRI, and HMC: Explicating Differences in Processes of Communication and Socialization with Social Technologies

The proliferation and integration of social technologies has occurred quickly, and the specific technologies with which we engage are ever-changing. The dynamic nature of the development and use of social technologies is often acknowledged by researchers as a limitation. In this manuscript, however, we present a discussion on the implications of our modern technological context by focusing on processes of socialization and communication that are fundamentally different from their interpersonal corollary. These are presented and discussed with the goal of providing theoretical building blocks toward a more robust understanding of phenomena of human-computer interaction, human-robot interaction, human-machine communication, and interpersonal communication.

The media language as an object of journalism science: To the history of the formation of St Petersburg media linguistics scientific school

The article is devoted to the history of Soviet journalism science and the isolation of the mass media language research industry in it. The purpose of the study is to identify the national and cultural specificity of the Russian science of journalism and to popularize its achievements. Based on a comparative analysis of the European, American and Soviet models of the journalism science, it was proved that the important factors in the development of global science was the exchange of research practices both between scientists from different countries and between generations of researchers within the same state. The importance of the personal factor in determining the professional ideology of the science of journalism and its disciplinary structure was established. When addressing of the disciplinary affiliation of media linguistics as a theoretical and methodological basis for speech phenomena of mass communication studying, it was noted that the attribution of media language research to the subject field of journalism theory can be considered the specifics of the national model of science on journalism. Using the example of the history of the development of the Leningrad Scientific and Educational School of Journalism, it was shown that the reproduction of research personnel of narrow media linguistic specialization took place at Leningrad University with specialists with classical philological education. Unique practices of studying media texts in Department of Stylistics and Editing of the Faculty of Journalism of Leningrad State University have developed, as a result of the implementation of an experiment at the university to develop methods for teaching and studying the language of the specialty.

Language Policy and Language Situation in Dynamics: Pomaks of Northern Greece

The paper comes up with a synchronous-diachronic analysis of the linguistic situation in one of the isolated cultural and linguistic enclaves of the Balkan Peninsula: the district of Xanthi in the region of Thrace in Northern Greece, on the Bulgarian-Greek border. Here, in a remote mountainous area, live Muslim Slavs, ethnic Bulgarians, representing a minority ethnolinguistic and cultural-confessional group that has existed for a long time in a foreign language and other religious environment among Orthodox Greeks. In the historical past, this community formed a single whole with the Muslim Bulgarians who now live within the boundaries of the Republic of Bulgaria. This minority is the object of the language and cultural policy of three states: Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria. Note that the Greek authorities for a long time 1920s–1990s (excluding the period of Bulgarian rule in 1941–1944) pursued a policy of de-Bulgarization of this population. As a result, today the degree of its Turkicization (due to the influence of Islam, the study of the Koran in Turkish and the active position of Turkey) is quite high. It should be noted that the Bulgarian-speaking communities in Northern Greece are not the object of the Bulgarian language policy, which is carried out by disinterested officials and politicians who ignore the opinions and assessments of Bulgarian dialectologists and sociolinguists. The study focuses on ethnonyms and exonyms as important factors in the formation of the Pomaks' linguistic identity: the self-name of the speakers of these dialects is Pomaks, Ahryans. The ethnonym Pomaks was introduced and continues to be actively used to discuss the new Greek policy towards the Bulgarian-speaking population of Greece; the linguonym Pomaks was also formed from it. Earlier in Greece, the term Slavophones ('speakers of the Slavic language') was used, cf. new pomakophones. In the 90s of the 20th century and early 21th century a number of scientists (V. Friedman, A. D. Dulichenko, A. Ioannidou, K. Voss, M. Nomati, M. Henzelmann, K. Steinke) considered Pomak to be one of the literary microlanguages of the southern Slavia, noting that it is characterized by the diversity of the script used and poor functionality. There were appropriate grounds for this (codification, publication of dictionaries and grammar, textbooks, etc.). But the impetus for the “creation” of the literary language of the Pomaks was the political task of the country's leadership. At present, Pomak (Southern Rodhopian, Bulgarian) dialects in Greece have an unwritten character (they are used exclusively for oral communication in the family and village, microsociety). Despite the presence of certain signs of the formation of the literary language among the Pomaks, the modern language situation and language policy do not contribute to its existence and functioning. We rely on both published sources and our own field materials collected during two ethnolinguistic expeditions carried out in 2018 and 2019, as well as online in 2021, and will try to present preliminary results of the study of the current state of the language and language policy. Let us note the importance of modern interdisciplinary approaches to the study of the phenomenon of intercultural communication, which are based on the dialogue of languages and cultures, and which necessitated the description of new linguistic conditions and consideration of the importance of not so much Greek as Turkish as a means of intra — and interethnic communication in the specific genre.

The article fixes the answers to the funda-mental remarks about Artur A. Dydrov’s article “Distopia on the Internet: What's new have memes given to the genre?” The object of critical analytics embraced mainly memes as an actual form of representation of dystopia and a modern phenomenon of culture and communication. It should be noted that the authors have not practically discussed dysto-pia as a subject of the designated publication. The papers describe the language of the digi-tal age and specific language formats, among which memes have a titular position. An anal-ysis of the critical content indicates that among specialists in the field of social scienc-es and the humanities there is no consensus either on the definition of a meme or on the assessment of its cultural potential. Contradic-tory statements and debatable ideas are di-rectly indicated in the papers (mainly they re-late to the topic of mythologization), and many of them can, undoubtedly, become a starting point for further research both in the field of “memetics”, and the areas of digital studies, digital anthropology, cultural studies, etc. The author thanks all the colleagues who have suggested their detailed comments full of productive ideas.

A database of North American double modals and self-repairs from YouTube

AbstractSequences of two modal verbs in spoken English can represent use of a nonstandard syntactic feature (double modal) or a corrected utterance in which a speaker begins with one modal auxiliary, but switches to another (self-repair). This article presents the Double Modals and Self-Repairs (DMSR) database, a table of naturalistic double modals and self-repairs in videos from local government entities in North America, created from theCorpus of North American Spoken English(CoNASE). The paper describes the procedures used for the database’s creation, discusses potential uses, and presents an exploratory analysis in which a logistic regression classifier is trained withCoNASEdata to distinguish authentic double modals from self-repair sequences on the basis of local discourse context. The analysis demonstrates how large corpora of speech can be used to investigate the links between syntactic and pragmatic phenomena and shows specifically that double modals are an interactive device, while two-modal sequences as self-repairs may be the result of high cognitive load. The paper concludes with a discussion of multimodal corpus creation from YouTube for the study of lexical, syntactic, and interactional phenomena in speech as well as for the analysis of complex, multilevel computer-mediated communication (CMC) phenomena.

In this essay I am attempting at a description of the phenomenon of communication and relationship between Federico Fellini and his cinematographers. Their background was Italian neorealism, but they could create unrealistic reality in Fellini’s movies. The most important thing for me was “who was influenced by whom”? Fellini by his cinematographers, or the great DPs by the Maestro. I discuss the neorealistic context of Polish movies too, since the influence of Italian neorealism is noticed in the Polish Film School movies, especially in Andrzej Wajda’s debut.

Silence and speaking as forms of representation of the historical trauma in the Ukrainian prose of the Independence period

The relevance of the article is determined by the current need for literary research of contemporary Ukrainian fiction works, focused on the problem of historical trauma, in the context on new achievements of trauma studies, memory studies, and identity studies. The research aims to analyze the role of the phenomena of silence and speaking in the fictional representations of historical traumas of the 20th century in the works of the Ukrainian prose of the Independence period. Methodological framework of the study includes trauma studies, memory studies, and identity studies, as well as postcolonial approach to the analysis of the fictional phenomena. The subject of the research is forms of representation pf historical trauma in the studied texts through the communicative phenomena of silence and speaking. The results of the study. As the main forms of representation of trauma in the works are considered: focus on the characters who became mute because of going through traumas; representation of the characters who stay silent on their traumas — either consciously or because of unconscious communicative barriers; a reflection of an extended process of forming of deep-seated taboo against socially disapproved ideas proclamation; attention to the situation of memory loss which makes impossible for the character to acknowledge his / her own identity; utilization of the plot-creative potential of the mystery, generation of suspense by means of narrative gaps; camouflaging of the key trauma story of the work as a minor, side one, use of unreliable narration stimulating the reader to verify represented facts of the diegesis and to draw his / her own conclusions about the significance of historical traumas in the individual life story of the character. The novelty of the study consists in the consideration of the current fiction works, which represent historical traumas of the 20th century, through the prism of communicative phenomena of silence and speaking. Connections of historical traumas with individual and national identity formation, embodied in the Ukrainian fictional discourse of the Independence period, is an interesting, promising subject of future literary studies.

THE DISCOURSE OF TOURISM: AN ANALYSIS OF THE ONLINE ARTICLE “10 BEST PLACES TO VISIT IN UKRAINE”

The article shows the fact that the concept of scientific discourse is interpreted as a complex phenomenon that consists of participants in communication, communication situations and the text itself. The conclusion is that discourse is an abstract invariant description of structural and semantic features that are realized in specific texts. Linguists interpret the concept of discourse as a complex communicative phenomenon that includes the speaker and the addressee of the message, the process of proper formation of speech, extralingual factors of communication, social and cultural background. This article presents a critical reading of the text “10 Best places to visit in Ukraine” and its overlook, research study in the field of online tourism promotion, published online in 2021 by one of the world’s largest tourism publishing houses, Touropia. The study aims at revising some of the characteristics of the ongoing tourism discourse through an analysis of the network of people and practices involved in these publications, their textual features and images. The article analyses the way in which various modes to create a virtual brochure with a promotional message from both institutional and commercial positions were combined. In doing this, it studies the organization of the website and its webpage, as well as the lexico-grammatical and visual features of its promotional messages. The analytical framework used includes critical discourse analysis and a corpus-based tool used to interpret different aspects of this tourism discourse. The places advertised as “Top 10” are presented to an all-aged audience that must be interested in discovering new places, appreciated to nature, fond of history and ready to consume national products. Polyparadigmatic nature has led to the active use of these terms in the field of literature, as a result of which scientific studies address issues of artistic concept, artistic discourse, which will always be open to researchers, while not exhausting its relevance.

Political power as such is of a communicative nature, the process of governing is exercised through the communication using the language and terminology accepted in the certain communicative community. The presidency institution can also be viewed and studied as a multidimensional communicative community, with the head of the state as the main actor. Besides the president, that communicative community also includes the president’s “team” (administration, advisors, speechwriters, plenipotentiaries, etc.), as well as certain media, especially journalists of the presidential pool. The presidential discourse is formed within the said community. Given the increasing complexity of the communication phenomenon in the contemporary world, the study of the presidency from the point of view of the communication theory seems to be an urgent scientific task. The paper uses examples of the United States of America and the Russian Federation to examine the institution of presidency as a phenomenon belonging to the field of political communication. By the term “communication” or “speech communication” the author understands the interaction of communicants – addressee and addressee, speaker and audience – through the verbal exchange of information with different purposes. The main object of analysis is the presidents’ annual oral addresses – “Addresses to the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation” and “Addresses to the US Congress”.

The article considers the phenomenon of In-ternet memes in the context of the mytholo-gization of ideas about reality. The author fo-cuses on Internet memes of dystopian con-tent and speaks about dystopia as an object representing the reality surrounding a person. He considers the Internet meme as a commu-nication phenomenon of digital culture. The Internet meme has a complex structure and reflects the views of Internet users on the agenda, their worldview, social and political system of society. In the article, the author contrasts the understanding of the meme within the framework of evolutionary biology and the theory of mind, which was developed within the framework of the so-called memet-ic approach, with the definition of a meme as a media meme and an Internet meme. The author supports the theory of media and communication interpretation of the Internet meme, and traces the connection between the metaphor and the myth presented in it. The metaphorical nature of the Internet meme explains its mythological nature. Meta-phorical constructions serve as a way to en-code myths in Internet memes, as a result of which they mythologize the message con-tained in them. The inclusion of dystopian im-ages of mass culture in Internet memes inevi-tably leads to their mythologization. The theme of dystopias appears in Internet memes as a reaction to the negative aspects of everyday reality, or as an expression of us-ers' attitude to the genre as a whole or specif-ic works, which indicates the popularity of dystopian images among users. Through them, Internet users express their critical attitude to reality in visual-text digital format commu-nication messages.
