Abstract
The purpose of this qualitative research is to describe the experience of South Korean college students who participated in service learning for North Korean defectors who have difficulty adapting themselves to South Korean universities. To this end, this study examined weekly reflective journals, and conducted individual interviews and evaluation meetings two times. The results are as follows. First, students learned how to respect cultural differences and also realized two Koreans did not differ much. Second, it turns out that service-learning also helps them with their classes by enhancing their English speaking skill and self- confidence. Third, students developed empathy and tried to break their prejudices for a successful service-learning experience. Finally, practical suggestions haven been made for the next service-learning program. Accurate and fair role assignment, clear understanding of the reporting system, weekly program operation, and educational administrative support are required for the successful operation of the service learning.
