Abstract
This study aimed to verify the mediating effect of meaning in life on the relationship between perceived social support and depression in the elderly. To do so, we used data from 353 elderly people aged 65 and older in J Region who participated in the survey faithfully. SPSS 18.0 was used for frequency analysis, correlation analysis, regression analysis, and mediation analysis. The results of the study showed that, first, higher perceived social support was associated with lower levels of depression and higher perceived meaning of life. Second, when the effect of social support on depression was examined through the mediation of meaning of life, it was found that the mediator, meaning of life, had a partial mediation effect. Based on these findings, we suggest the need for an approach utilizing social support and meaning of life as interventions for the mental health of the elderly.
