Abstract
Objectives The purpose of this study was to examine the moderated mediating effect of self-compassion and meaning in life in the effects of university student’s intolerance of uncertainty on job-seeking anxiety. Methods For this purpose, an online questionnaire was conducted on students enrolled in four-year universities in Seoul and the metropolitan area. A total of 371 data were used for analysis, excluding data from 10 people who responded insincerely. For data analysis, SPSS 25.0 and SPSS PROCESS Macro 3.5 were used. The mediating effect, the moderating effect and the moderated mediation effect were verified. Bootstrapping was performed to verify the significance of the indirect effect. Results The main results are as follows. First, each variable of intolerance of uncertainty, job-seeking anxiety, self-compassion, and meaning in life all showed significant correlations. Second, the mediating effect of self-compassion in the relationship between intolerance of uncertainty and job-seeking anxiety was verified. Third, the moderating effect of the meaning in life in the relationship between intolerance of uncertainty and self-compassion was verified. Fourth, the moderated mediating effect of self-compassion and the meaning in life was verified in the effect of intolerance of uncertainty on job-seeking anxiety. Conclusions Based on these results, the implications of counseling intervention using self-compassion and the meaning in life were presented to university students who complain of job-seeking anxiety due to intolerance of uncertainty, and the limitations of the study and directions for follow-up studies were discussed.
