English –Arabic Translation of Culture-Specific Items in Laila Lalami’s The Moor’s Account: A Textual Analysis

The main aim of this study is analyse how culture-specific items (henceforth CSIs), metaphors and idioms are translated from English into Arabic. The corpus of this study subsumes Laila Lamai’s The Moor’s Account and its Arabic version Ma Rawahu Al Maghribi "مارواه المغربي" translated by Nouf Al-Maymouni. Methodologically speaking, this study is based on a bunch of theories, namely Postcolonial Theory, Derrida’s deconstruction, and Hans Vermeer and Katharina Reiss’s Skopos Theory. In analysing thus novel, Document analysis Protocol is followed (see Appendix). It entails extracting CSIs from the source text and the target text and classifying them in an inventory according to Peter Newmark’s cultural categories. Eirlys Davies’ (2003) taxonomy for the translation of CSIs is applied so as to identify the micro-strategies that were adopted by the translator. Idioms and metaphors are also classified in an inventory and Mona Baker’s (2018) taxonomy for the translation of idioms is applied. Lawrence Venuti’s macro-strategies of foreignization and domestication are applied as well.

The impact of contextual understanding on neural machine translation accuracy: A case study of Indonesian cultural idioms in English translation

The translation of Indonesian idiomatic expressions into English using Neural Machine Translation (NMT) systems presents significant challenges due to the intricate nature of idiomatic language. Idioms are culturally embedded constructs conveying meanings different from their literal interpretations. This study explores the effectiveness of NMT systems in capturing and translating Indonesian idiomatic expressions into English. Using a qualitative approach, 150 diverse Indonesian idioms were evaluated through Google Translate and DeepL. Each idiom was assessed for semantic accuracy, syntactic coherence, and contextual fidelity. Qualitative analysis provided a comprehensive evaluation of translation quality. Findings reveal significant challenges for NMT systems in translating idiomatic expressions. Both Google Translate and DeepL show strengths in some areas, but also have limitations. While they generally capture literal meanings, they often miss metaphorical nuances and cultural connotations. Syntactic errors such as incorrect word order and tense inconsistencies are common, especially in complex idioms. In addition, contextual fidelity analysis shows that NMT systems struggle with contextual appropriateness and pragmatic usage, resulting in translations lacking cultural sensitivity and relevance. These challenges highlight the need for improved algorithms to better interpret and translate idiomatic language across cultural contexts. Accurate idiom translation is crucial for language learners to understand cultural nuances and idiomatic usage. Enhancing the capabilities of NMT systems requires refining algorithms, developing context-aware models, and expanding training datasets with diverse idiomatic expressions. Overcoming these challenges will advance machine translation capabilities and improve cross-cultural communication and language learning experiences.

Challenges of Translating Idiomatic Expressions: A Cross-Linguistic Analysis at a University in Hanoi, Vietnam

This study investigates the challenges students face when translating idiomatic expressions between English and Vietnamese and explores how linguistic and cultural factors influence the translation process. Utilizing a combination of translation task analysis and focus group discussions, the research reveals that students frequently rely on literal translations, resulting in inaccurate or nonsensical outcomes due to their inability to grasp the figurative meanings of idioms. Cultural mismatches, particularly the absence of equivalent expressions in Vietnamese, further complicate translation efforts, leading to significant misunderstandings. Additionally, linguistic barriers, such as syntactic differences between English and Vietnamese, hinder students' ability to produce natural and accurate translations of idiomatic expressions. The findings emphasize the critical role of cultural knowledge and syntactic flexibility in effective idiomatic translation. To address these challenges, the study recommends that translation training programs place greater emphasis on idiomatic understanding and cross-cultural competence. This study contributes to the growing body of literature on idiomatic translation by highlighting the interplay of linguistic and cultural factors and suggesting strategies to enhance translation accuracy.

Influence of Translation Techniques on the Accuracy of Interpretation of Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

This study analyzes the influence of translation techniques on the accuracy of the interpretation of Louisa May Alcott's novel "Little Women". The three translation techniques analyzed are literal translation, idiomatic translation, and dynamic equivalence. This study uses a qualitative method with a content analysis approach from the novel “Little Women”. This method was chosen to explore in depth how translation techniques affect the accuracy of interpretation in the translated novel. These findings emphasize the importance of choosing the right translation technique to maintain the integrity of literary interpretation. This study also highlights the importance of considering cultural and social contexts in the process of translating literary texts. It was found that a deep understanding of the author's original culture is essential to produce an accurate and meaningful translation. In addition, this study recommends that translators have strong linguistic and literary skills to be able to transfer the nuances and meanings contained in the original text into their translations. The findings of this study can be a valuable guide for translators and researchers in understanding the complexity of translation techniques and their impact on the interpretation of literary texts.

Metode dan Strategi Penerjemahan Bahasa Arab ke Bahasa Indonesia pada Subtitle Film “Ar Risalah”

This study discusses the application of translation methods and strategies in the subtitles of the film Ar Risalah from Arabic to Indonesian. The film Ar Risalah is a religious film that tells the story of the life of the Prophet Muhammad SAW, which has strong historical and cultural values. This study aims to identify the methods and strategies used in translating dialogue sentences in the film's subtitles. Using a qualitative descriptive research method, data were collected through direct observation of the film's dialogue. The researcher classified the translation methods based on Newmark's theory and translation strategies from Pamungkas and Akmaliyah. The results of the study showed that there were seven translation methods used, namely word-for-word, literal, faithful, semantic, adaptation, free, and idiomatic translation. In addition, there were four translation strategies, namely prioritizing and ending, reducing, adding, and replacing. These findings indicate that translators must consider lexical, contextual, and cultural aspects in producing translations that are communicative and in accordance with the target language. This study provides in-depth insight into the complexity of the film translation process, which is expected to be a reference for subtitle translators in the future.

A Critical Exploration of Cultural and Aesthetic Representation of Shandong Dialect Translation in Red Sorghum

The translation of the Shandong dialect, specifically in the novel Red Sorghum authored by Mo Yan and translated by Howard Goldblatt, posed significant challenges to both translators and readers due to its local Chinese cultural richness. Previous researches mainly focused on its traditional translation strategies including foreignization and domestication. Exploration of the aesthetic value of dialect and its cultural representations in modern literature is a relatively new area of research yet to be developed. This paper revealed that translation operates in a complicated three-dimensional structure of translator (aesthetic subject), translated text (aesthetic object), and culture (social environment). In the process of translating dialect, the aesthetic experience and the Aesthetic Regulation Devices (ARD) adopted by the translator, as well as the beauty of characterization and symbolization come into play. Therefore, aesthetic values and cultural uniqueness are represented not only on the linguistic, but also on the spiritual level by contrasting the purity of the villagers in rural China and the brutality of the social turbulence that surrounds them. The paper demonstrated that dialect translation involves a multifaceted and dynamic equivalence between source and target language. The research findings indicated that translation techniques of domestication and foreignization are utilized significantly more often (82%) than the strategy of ARD (18%) during the translation process. This imbalance in strategy usage may result in a deficient representation of aesthetic and cultural values. The significance of this study lies mainly in its intention to reconstruct a more effective theoretical paradigm for dialectal translation procedures.

Comparative Study of Beijing Dialect Translation in Teahouse from the Aesthetic Perspective

As one of Lao She’s masterpieces, Teahouse is a gem and a milestone in Chinese drama which is renowned both domestically and internationally. This article examines the translation of Beijing dialects in two English versions of Teahouse translated by Ying Ruochen and Howard from the perspective of reception aesthetic theory. The results indicates that Ying’s version focuses on stage performance, using simple or concise language which to some extent differs from the aesthetic expectations of the target language readers, while Howard’s translation, aiming at readers’ acceptance, tends to employ formal expressions and lengthy sentence structures, which are less suitable for stage presentation and performance.By revealing the translation differences in local dialects in the versions under this theoretical framework, this paper is hoped to provide valuable insights for translation studies and practice.

Tinjauan Kedwibahasaan Buku Cerita Anak ‘The Foos’ dari Pandangan Metode Penerjemahan

Bilingual children's story books in Indonesian and English are now being published in Indonesia, providing them as reading options for mothers, caregivers, storytellers, and the children themselves. This study aims to analyze, identify, describe, and classify the forms of translation methods found in a bilingual children's storybook entitled 'The Foos' by Arleen Amidjaja, as well as to analyze the translation methods applied to determine the success in achieving equivalence of meaning in the target language (TL). This study uses a qualitative descriptive method and a documentation method. Employing text analysis, careful reading, and note taking techniques for research constitutes the stages of data collection. Text analysis uses Newmark's translation method theory with data sources from English texts as the source language text (SL) and Indonesian as the TL from the storybook 'The Foos.' The results of the analysis are presented in the form of a comparison of the two languages ​​, along with the results of identifying SL and TL text translation techniques. The interpretation of the identification results is then presented in the form of a descriptive presentation by considering the translation techniques of the identification results. The results of this study indicate that 12 translation method data are oriented to the SL, and eight are oriented to the TL. The translation techniques that are often used are semantic and communicative translation techniques. There are no faithful, adaptation, or idiomatic translation techniques because the children's storybook 'The Foos' does not have proverbial sentences or other foreign language terms. The SL uses simple sentence structures and vocabulary. The translation method that is oriented to the SL with semantic and communicative translation techniques is effective for translating children's storybooks, ensuring that readers understand the content of the stories.

Analisis Metode Penerjemahan dalam Novel “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”

Comparing the translation of literary works and the translation of scientific texts shows the differences in terms of complexity and challenges. One example of a literary work is a novel. Novels with figurative language and idiomatic expressions certainly need to be translated accurately for the target readers. This study aims to explain the translation methods used in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The data sources in this study are taken from the original English novel published by D. Appleton and Co in 1866 and the Indonesian translation translated by Inkraian in 2015 published through wattpad. The research was conducted using the translation method proposed by Newmark (1998). The results show that there are seven translation methods used in translating Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, namely 6 data for literal translation, 6 data for free translation, 5 data for faithful translation, 4 data for communicative translation, 4 data for adaptation translation, 3 data for semantic translation, and 2 data for idiomatic translation.

Analisis Strategi Penerjemahan Idiomatik Dalam Novel “ARTEMIS” Karya Andy Weir

Idioms are one of the most commonly used figurative expressions in literary works, and they are often referred to as a problem that machine translators can never solve. This study aims to discover the strategies used in translating idioms in the novel "Artemis" by Andy Weir. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. The data sources are idioms found in the book "Artemis" by Andy Weir. The results show that there are several translation strategies used in translating idioms in the novel "Artemis", namely Paraphrase, Similar Meaning and Form, Similar Meaning but Dissimilar Form, Omission of a Play on Idiom, Omission of the Entire Idiom, and Borrowing SL Idiom. Paraphrase is the most widely used idiom translation strategy, which is 30% of the total 74 data analyzed, and the least strategy is borrowing at 2% with only 6 data out of all the data analyzed. The findings in this study show that translators mostly apply the paraphrasing translation strategy because finding the same idiom in the target language is very difficult, so a paraphrasing strategy is needed so that the meaning contained in the source language can be conveyed well in the target language.

This study deals with eight translation methods applied in translating in Agatha Christie’s Indonesian Version Novel ‘Kucing di Tengah Burung Dara’. This study attempts to describe the eight methods namely: Word for Word Translation, Literal Translation, Faithful Translation, Semantic Translation, Adaptation Translation, Idiomatic Translation and Communicative Translation. The research methodology is qualitative. The dominant method in translating the novel is Communicative Translation so it gives the readers the same impact as the original does.

Analysis of Arabic Translation Methods in Cartoon Films: "Ibn Sina"

The purpose of this study is to understand and explain the translation method used in the process of translating Arabic cartoon movies from Arabic into Indonesian. The theory of translation method used is Peter Newmark's theory of translation method. The researcher used the descriptive method of qualitative research. The listening method and note-taking technique were used for data collection. The data source of this research is taken from the subtitles of Arabic animated cartoon film: Ibn Sina on Sukardi Hasanudin's youtube channel episode 1 (one). The data obtained in the form of 89 data were researched and analyzed. The result of the analysis found 7 translation methods applied by the translator in the Arabic cartoon film: Ibnu Sina, namely word-for-word translation of 32 data (36%), literal translation of 4 data (4%), faithful translation of 10 data (10%), semantic translation of 5 data (5%), free translation of 23 data (26%), idiomatic translation of 1 data (1%), communicative translation of 14 data (16%). The dominant translation methods used are word-for-word translation and free translation.

The Translation Of Idioms In The Netflix Subtitle Of The Film Notting Hill

Idiom is one of the most complicated figurative languages for translators to render, since not all of them have the exact equivalent in another language. Related to the issue, the current study was conducted. It was a qualitative study. The data were taken from the transcript of the film “Notting Hill”, and its Indonesian translated subtitle by Netflix’s team. In analyzing the types of idioms and the translation strategies used in the subtitle, theories proposed by Fernando (1996) and Baker (2011) were used. From the analysis, it can be concluded that Pure Idiom was the most frequently found type of idiom in the movie with 35 idioms or 51% of the data, and Translation by Paraphrase was the most frequently used idiom translation strategy with 51 idioms or 75% of the data

Exploring Idiomatic Expressions in Demi Lovato's 'Heart Attack': A Student Translation

This study aims to determine the accuracy of students' translations of idiomatic expressions in song lyrics. The Data was collected from 24 students in the 4th semester of the English Department at Gorontalo State University. The song lyrics used for the study were from "Heart Attack" by Demi Lovato. Participants were given 30 minutes to translate the lyrics. The research utilized a qualitative method. Data analysis involved two steps: skimming the translations collected from participants and making notes on the presumed data, followed by identifying and classifying the accuracy of the translations. The study found that the quality of accurate translations was higher than that of inaccurate translations. Specifically, 42% of the translations were accurate, 40% were less accurate, and 18% were inaccurate. This indicates that the overall quality of students' translations of idioms is quite good, likely because some idioms in the song are familiar to them.

CONTEMPORARY APPROACHES TOPHRASEOLOGICAL STUDIES

This article explores the directions of phraseological research in domestic linguistics. The aim of the study is to analyze phraseology from the perspectives of comparative and translational studies, highlight complex research areas, and address unresolved significant issues.The relevance of the research is underscored by the detailed studies conducted in domestic linguistics concerning the composition, structure, and meanings of idioms, evidenced by numerous defended dissertations and published scholarly articles. Despite these efforts, it is premature to claim that all aspects of domestic phraseology have been thoroughly examined. Notably, the comparison and translation of idioms remain prevalent topics. Consequently, this article concentrates on the critical and pertinent issue of the extent of idiom research within comparative and translational studies. The methodologies employed include descriptive and comparative approaches, alongside methods of collection, systematization, and analysis.The research findings specify the directions and characteristics of phraseological research in domestic linguistics and identify key areas requiring further investigation. The scarcity of comparative and translational studies was confirmed, and it was established that set expressions frequently pose challenges during translation, often being translated inaccurately, as evidenced by linguistic data.The theoretical significance of this research lies in its contribution to the field of theoretical phraseologywithin domestic linguistics. From a practical standpoint, the findings may be applied in teaching subjects such as phraseology, comparative phraseology, phraseological aspects of translation, and literary translation.

Category Shifts in the Chinese–English Translation of Animal Idioms in Journey to the West

Idioms are important elements of language and culture, forming the essence of language and the core of vocabulary. Animal idioms naturally have different connotations in the Chinese and Western cultures, which can pose a tremendous challenge for translators. Thus, the reasons for translators’ choices in this context are significant. To better understand this subject, this study investigates the cognitive category shifts in the translations of animal idioms in Journey to the West. Through the theory of cognitive category shifts, the paper finds that translators’ choices are influenced by cognitive concepts derived from their living environments, cultural backgrounds, and knowledge reserves.

The Translation of Sound from the Postcolonial Perspective: A Case Study of the English Translation of Sandalwood Death Written by Mo Yan

Mo Yan, as the first Chinese Nobel Laureate in Literature, holds significant importance in the overseas dissemination of his translated works. The intentional retreating of Sandalwood Death writing makes it a unique narrative where characters, folklore, and culture weave together in a polyphonic tapestry of the era. Drawing upon post-colonial translation theory, this analysis delves into Howard Goldblatt's English translation of Sandalwood Death, focusing on the translation and retransmission of sound embodied in characters (narrative translation of characters), folklore (translation of idioms and proverbs), and culture (terms, Maoqiang). The study suggests that the translator employs a plethora of estrangement strategies, reflecting an overall trend of post-colonial translation. Many Chinese cultural terms seamlessly integrate into Western discourse, illustrating the potential for establishing a balanced discourse between East and West. This investigation explores the nuanced interplay of voices, unraveling how translation choices contribute to a broader discourse of cultural equality and understanding in the context of post-colonial translation.

Translation Strategies and challenges for translating Maithili Idioms and Proverbs into English

Translation of idioms and proverbs presents distinctive challenges due to their cultural and linguistic specificity, requiring strategies that go beyond literal translation to convey their intended meaning accurately. This study explores the translation strategies and challenges encountered in translating Maithili idioms and proverbs into English. Drawing from the Longman Dictionary of English Idioms and Larson's definition of idioms, present article highlights the significance of idiomatic expressions in preserving cultural shades and emotional connotations. Through an analysis of idiomatic expressions from Maithili literature and their English translations, the study examines the methods employed in translating these cultural artifacts. Utilizing Baker's framework, the article discusses various translation techniques and emphasizes the importance of context in conveying the essence of idiomatic expressions. The findings underscore the complexities involved in translating idioms, urging translators to prioritize conveying meaning over literal interpretation and to provide additional context when direct equivalence is lacking.

Development of an Automated Assamese Dialect Translation System Based on Rule-Based Techniques: Conceptualization and Preliminary Implementation

To translate a particular word or collection of words from one dialect to another, a system called the dialect translation module is used in this work. The suggested system's results can help with understanding and analysing the dialectal differences between the dialects. This will also benefit individuals keen on acquiring communication skills in one or more of the dialects. When translating, consider both mainstream Assamese (standard Assamese) and the Kamrupia (Palasbari) dialect of Assamese. This study delves into the analysis of text, word construction, morphology, grammar, and ambiguity. Towards the conclusion, a method for developing a deliberate translation system is suggested.

THE PRINCIPLES OF TRANSFERRING IDIOMS IN TRANSLATION FROM ENGLISH INTO UZBEK

The given article copes with determining and systemizing the phonological and semantic transition of English phraseologies and idioms into Uzbek language by means of translation, taking into account the lingua-cultural aspects of two given languages, represented in the article as main objects of my work. The possibilities of adequate transmission of meanings and images, the mechanisms and principles of literary translation of idioms, and also the work includes suggestions for the translator on working with phraseological units.
