ОБРАЗНЫЕ ФРАЗЕОЛОГИЗМЫ КАК КОМПОНЕНТЫ КИНОТЕКСТА: ВЗГЛЯД СКВОЗЬ ПРИЗМУ ПЕРЕВОДА

The article deals with the translation of phraseological units in film from the perspective of audiovisual translation (AVT) and cultural differences between the recipients of the film in the source and target languages. The comparative analysis of Russian cinematic material and English subtitles demonstrates that the predominant strategies in translation are phraseological translation and “neutralization” of the culture-specific component in idioms.

МОВНА КОМПЕТЕНЦІЯ СТУДЕНТІВ ЯК ОСНОВА КУЛЬТУРИ МОВИ: ОСОБЛИВОСТІ ТА ПОРУШЕННЯ НОРМИ

The article is devoted to language competence study of higher education institutions’ students as the basis of professional language culture. It was emphasized that students of higher education should develop language competence, follow the literal language norms, avoid morphological, lexical and phonetic violations. Mastering the Ukrainian language perfectly is the task of every conscious citizen, who is obliged to be able to use all the lexical wealth in the professional language. The theoretical basis of language competence is substantiated, it is emphasized that it should not be confused with communicative competence. Various aspects of research by scientists regarding language culture, language norms, language and stylistic advice aimed at improving the language of professional communication are highlighted. Violations of lexical norms in the students’ professional language were revealed. The most typical lexical errors were analyzed: 1) inappropriate use of paronyms. Such words should be checked in the dictionary of paronyms; 2) the use of pleonasms, excessive or redundant words and repetitions (tautologies); 3) the use of lexical Russianisms, which violates lexical norms, litters the literary form of the Ukrainian language, leads to mistakes regarding the use of tracing foreign words, surzhyk (mixed language dialect); 4) using words in a noncharacteristic or context-inappropriate meaning; 5) literal translation of phraseological units, words with a phraseologically related meaning, which have their counterparts in the Ukrainian language, or violations of phraseological accuracy; 6) inappropriate use of borrowed vocabulary, in particular anglicisms that have their counterparts in the literary language. A foreign word can be determined by phonetic-grammatical design and lexical meaning; 7) incorrect use of prepositional structures, which arises due to insufficient knowledge of the Ukrainian prepositional patterns. When translating the conjunction with the preposition “po” from Russian, one should take into account the peculiarities of prepositions’ use in the Ukrainian language, and not translate verbatim. Work on lexical errors’ elimination will make it possible to improve the language culture of students, to form language competence, and to observe the literary language norms.

PHRASEOLOGY AS A BRANCH OF LINGUISTIC SCIENCE

There are a number of important reasons for this in this paper: firstly, it is well known that the role of English phrasal units has increased dramatically in recent years. This is evidenced by the recent appearance in the UK of a series of dictionaries and exercise books dedicated to them, with a particular focus on the so-called phrasal verbs which play an indispensable role in modern English. Secondly, they are typical of the English language and have a type of verbal expression which must be understood in order to master the English language. Phrase units are also one of the most challenging issues in the learning process. There are currently many methods and approaches in this area. The object of the study is to select phrasal expressions in English and Russian, examine the role of phrasal units in language and the use of phrasal units, analyze the equivalence of phrasal words, consider types of phrases and the concept of phrase system, and demonstrate how phrases occur in English. As a linguistic discipline, the subject of phraseology also includes a comprehensive study of the phraseological resources of a particular language. Important aspects of this scientific study are the stability of phraseological units, the semantic structure of systemic phraseological units and phraseological units, their origin and main functions. An equally interesting issue is the translation of phraseological units. Because of the indivisibility of meanings, phraseology requires the selection of identical idioms in one's language in order to understand their meaning.

LINGUOSTYLISTIC ANALYSIS OF THE ORIGINAL AND DUBBED TRANSLATION OF ENGLISH FILM ADAPTATION OF THE NOVEL “ANNA KARENINA” BY L. TOLSTOY

The article considers the translation of the feature film “Anna Karenina” from the point of view of linguistic and cultural identity of English and Ukrainian languages. Much attention is paid to the difficulties of translation of linguostylistic devices, in particular, phraseological units, proper names, similes, epithets, metaphors, and allusions. As a result of the research, the author came to the conclusion that an adequate translation of phraseological units requires a good knowledge of phraseological units of both source and target languages, the necessity to be aware of the main ways of their translation and skillfully use them in practice. In the research phraseological units were grouped into phraseological remodeling, phraseological unities, phraseological combinations, and phraseological phrases. The distinctive feature of proper names translation is that all they, in fact, save their original sound images. Translation of film’s proper names is done with a help of transliteration, transcription, transposition and loan translation. Simile usually directly compares two things. The similes from the film can be translated with a help of direct equivalent, addition, omission, generalization and concretization. Metaphors are usually translated with a help of corresponding metaphors or metaphors with other images in the target text. Allusion assumes covert or indirect reference to an object or circumstance from an external context. Biblical texts are the source of allusions in the analyzed film.

PHRASEOLOGICAL COMBINATIONS WITH THE NUMERICAL COMPONENT: LEXICO-SEMANTIC AND TRANSLATION ASPECTS

The aim of this article is to study the lexico-semantic peculiarities of the phraseological units with component number. The symbolic meanings of numbers in the phraseological units are described in this study. Different approaches for determination of the term phraseological units by variety of linguists are considered in the present work. The problem of studying the semantic specificity of phraseological units with different components is cleared up. Numerical phraseological units are studied in the aspect of translation problem. The article includes varieties of functions of numeric words nowadays. Correlations of the terms number and word are studied. The authors also describe peculiar features of the concept number in the culture. The most popular numbers in phraseological units are analyzed. The preferential use of certain numbers in different cultures in relation to the special religions is reported. The article deals with the peculiarities of translation of phraseological units with respect to the language-specific nature. Main ways of translation of phraseological units with numerical component are studied in detail.

Linguo-culturological analysis of the translation of phraseological units on the basis of Mo Yan’s novel “Life and Death are wearing me out”

The article considers the issue of the peculiarities and methods of translating phraseological units from Chinese using the example of Mo Yan’s postmodernist novel “Life and Death are wearing me out”. The purpose of this article is to analyze the linguo-culturological approach when translating phraseological units with the elements of national culture, as well as to consider the methods of translating phraseological units both in the process of inter-lingual and intercultural communication. The linguo-culturological aspect is presented in the literary text in various ways, primarily in the form of vocabulary where you can meet a linguo-cultural or national-specific component. Phraseology contains a national-cultural component in its semantics and it also has cross-cultural value. Both in Chinese and in Russian, these set expressions have a vivid emotional coloring and clearly reflect a particular linguistic trait of the people.

Challenges in Translation of English Phraseological Units With Onomastic Constituents Into Vietnamese Equivalents

Translation of phraseological units with proper names (PUPs) is topical for the contemporary translation studies nowadays. It is noted that PUPs reflect the culture and national mentality of a definite nation. Quite a few studies have prospectively examined English PUPs and their translation into other languages, but it is hard to find such an in-depth study in the case the target language is Vietnamese. By employing the qualitative approach, this paper sets out the findings of the study where 241 English PUPs in our compiled database were classified into four groups according to their translations into Vietnamese. The group of non-idiomatic and descriptive translation equivalents accounts for a majority of more than 57% of all the PUPs, proving that PUPs in both languages are highly culture-specific. Although the other three groups share a minority of approximately 43% of all the PUPs, they hold interesting implications and multiple levels of similar or different metaphors. Based on the findings, the paper discusses the challenges translators encounter during the translation process of English PUPs into their Vietnamese equivalents. It is evident that among various translation obstacles, the proper name factor is clearly one of the most challenging issues. The paper then proposes some translation solutions to cope with these special expressions. In addition to recommending to flexibly apply translation strategies, the author's conclusion emphasizes that only when translators manage to decode and grasp how PUPs work cross-linguistically in both languages and cultures can they achieve an appropriate translation of English PUPs.

This article considers the problem of translation of colloquial phraseology. A comparison of translations into Ukrainian language from the original language. Methods of translation of phraseological units are investigated. Particular attention is paid to Catherine Cusse's novel “A Perfect Future” and its translation into Ukrainian language. The essence of phraseological units, their originality and specificity is revealed. In the article the quality and equivalence of phraseological units translation into Ukrainian language are analysed. This article attempts to reveal the main causes of the translation of phraseological expressions. The relevance of the issue of phraseological translation is proved. The paper studies phraseological units and how they represent the national character of each nation. The emotional aspect has been studied and the impact that it has on the reader or listener. The development of phraseology is analysed. The article discusses French and Ukrainian phraseologisms, their similarities and differences. It has been studied that phraseologisms convey semantic, lexical and grammatical features of language.It was showed that some phraseologies need support and explanation of the text. The main indicator semantic reinterpretation of phraseology is the opposition of literal and figurative value. The direct meaning of phraseological units is practically absent if talk about its etymolog-ical roots, as the basis for its explanation is an unrealistic or imaginary, desirable sit-uation. The article also discusses the problem with the unidirectional approach. It was investigated that rethinking as a form of semantic transformation of phrases is the most common and most productive in French, the newest phraseological units arise as a result of rethinking free phrases. The practical significance of the research results is substantiated. So, the work is devoted to the research of peculiarities of translation into Ukrainian of French phraseological units. This research can be helpful because this work represents a great theoretical value for those who want to take up their future carrier in the field of translations as invaluable reference to the methods and the ways of translation of phraseologisms in everyday life.

This study attempts to provide some insight into the relevance of cultural factors in the translation of dramatic texts. The present research aims at determining the ways of adequate reproduction of national and cultural identity of the play of Tennessee Williams “A Streetcar Named Desire”. The article deals with the most effective ways of translation of phraseological units and proper names in drama. The main problem during the translation of phraseological units and proper names is determined; it lies in the fact that they have a certain stylistic feature, expressiveness that are depended on the context. The combination of several approaches within a single study makes it possible to describe the peculiarities of the individual style of the writer, and this provides a complete understanding of the selection principles of linguistic means by the author.

Порівняльні дослідження в області розмовної лексики і фразеології є одним з напрямів сучасної лінгвістики, що постійно розвивається. До теперішнього часу в області порівняльної стилістики накопичилася значна кількість робіт. Проте поле для вивчення цієї області завжди залишається відкритим, так як в центрі уваги дослідника виявляється поняття норми, яке в різних мовних традиціях суттєво відрізняється. Передача фразеологічних одиниць є невід’ємною частиною процесу перекладу художнього твору з мови оригіналу. При цьому зберігається потреба в аналізі адекватності і еквівалентності текстів. На вибір тактики перекладу фразеологізмів впливає не лише сам текст, який перекладається, але і наміри перекладача як мовної особі. У статті розглядаються різні способи та труднощі перекладу еквівалентних і безеквівалентних іншомовних фразеологізмів на матеріалі роману Б. Шоу «Пігмаліон». Відомо, що переклад фразеологічних одиниць вважається одним із завдань, які ускладнюють роботу перекладача, оскільки багато фразеологізмів мають яскраво виражену національну специфіку, що уособлює загальнонаціональне мислення народу.

PHRASEOLOGICAL UNIT AS A COMPENDIOUS MYTH AGENT: TRANSLATION DIFFICULTIES

The current research features phraseological units and the role of myth in the formation of fixed combinations. By positioning phraseology as a “compendious” myth, the author points out that it is extremely difficult to interpret these speech units because of the discursive information hidden in their semantics. It is noted that the specificity of phraseological units is determined not by formal, but by content characteristics. The article describes the most effective ways of translation of phraseological units. The research owes its topicality to the fact that phraseological units are common in different genres, which leads to problem of their adequate translation. The novelty of the article is in the approach to the phraseological interpretation of units, which are considered in this paper as agents of a “compendious” myth. The theoretical significance and practical value are based on the fact that such an interpretation promotes a deeper understanding and, therefore, an adequate translation of phraseological units into another language. The research methods are: method of phraseological identification, comparison, analysis, experiment.

Interference and the Translation of Phraseological Units in a Parallel and Multilingual Corpus

This paper will report on findings obtained from a corpus-based translation analysis of phraseological units on texts translated from German into Basque, with special emphasis placed on the shape that interference (Toury 1995/2012) takes in German-into-Basque literary translations. It will be shown not only that “typical” source language interference can be found in translated texts, but also that interference arises from other texts and/or languages present in the translator’s mind, most commonly in this study; Spanish. For the purpose of carrying out such an analysis, a digitized, parallel and multilingual corpus was compiled consisting of German source texts (STs), Basque target texts (TTs) and their corresponding intermediary versions in cases of indirect translation.

Comparative Study of English and Russian Phraseology: Component Theory of Identity and Difference of the Seme Organization

This research is aimed at comparative study of English and Russian phraseology and semasiology. It provides new scientific approach to the solution of one of the most complex problems of comparative study of the phraseological material of different languages on the semantic level. This work is of great importance as it helps to define similarities and distinctions in the language picture of the world and reveal the peculiarities of different languages. It also allows to investigate ways of reflection of reality into language which gives the chance to study language picture of the world.Our research suggests that component analysis method, based on the criteria of identity and difference of seme organization of phraseological units, provides a more complex and in-depth analysis of the description of the semantic structure of phraseological meaning in English and Russian. Over 1750 phraseological units have been analysed from monolingual and bilingual phraseological dictionaries, English and Russian explanatory dictionaries to describe the structure of English and Russian phraseological units, identify stable semantic correlations between them. We further reveal three types of interlingual phraseological compliances / non-compliances: semantic equivalents, semantic analogues and partial semantic analogues. The results show strongly expressed quantitative prevalence of semantic analogues over semantic equivalents. The quantity of semantic analogues exceeds the quantity of semantic equivalents by 0.5%, which can be explained by the peculiarities of the development of the two remotely related languages. Our further study could address the comparative investigation of ways of the translation of phraseological units with no direct equivalents (culture-specific vocabulary) in other languages, which would enable translators to provide the interpretation which is more or less adequate and close to the original meaning.

BRITISH AND AMERICAN PHRASEOLOGICAL UNITS IN THE ORIGINAL AND TRANSLATION (ON THE EXAMPLE OF ENGLISH LITERARY TEXTS)

Modern English phraseological expressions are various and every aspect of its study is worth of due regard. The problem of translation of phraseological units from English into Ukrainian, particularly English and American proverbs and idioms at the current stage, has been insufficiently studied. Therefore our research is urgent. The aim of this research is to explore the peculiarities of translation of English and American phraseological units in the context, to determine the efficient ways of translation.

Translating phraseology

In this article, a series of techniques and tools necessary for the translation of phraseological units are reviewed. Using Corpas Pastor’s contributions to the literature (2000a, 2000b, 2001) as a point of departure, we examine the assumptions on which they are based, to then go on to review two techniques proposed by Sevilla and Sevilla (2004), and by Sevilla Muñoz (2009), respectively: i.e. the actantial technique and the thematic technique. Finally, we review the major dictionaries in which phrases from Spanish and Italian are collected and highlight their strengths and weaknesses from the standpoint of the translation of the phraseology concerned.
