PELATIHAN BAHASA INGGRIS BAGI MAHASISWA AKPARTA SURAKARTA

This study aims to train English language skills for Akparta students to be proficient in English. The research methods used include presentations, lectures, observations and discussions. The results showed that the level of English mastery of the Surakarta Akparta students had progressed in speaking English. Community service activities carried out at Akparta Surakarta are helpful for students to improve their English language competence so that students can become professional tourism workers

THE RESILIENCE OF WOMEN TOURISM WORKERS DURING THE Covid-19 PANDEMIC IN BALI

This study aims to determine the form of resilience of women tourism workers affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. This study uses a qualitative method with a case study approach. Data sources are primary data from interviews with various parties, including hotel owners, hotel associations and hotel employees, while secondary data sources are documentation data. Data analysis was performed using an interactive model. The spread of the corona virus globally has affected various lines of community life, including in Bali. Hotels are the tourist facilities in Bali that are most affected. The decline in tourist visits, causing hotel occupancy rates to experience a drastic drop which resulted in layoffs. The finding of this research is that job termination for female employees occurs in almost every hotel in Bali. However, the termination of employment was responded creatively. In an effort to maintain a life for themselves and their families, women who are affected by hotel employees, especially those who have worked in the food and beverage division, react by adjusting to the conditions that occur. They make various types of food that are sold online using WhatsApp, I.G. and F.B. social media. The attitude of women who are former hotel workers in the food and beverage division in Bali towards termination of employment shows that creativity is driven by the spirit of survival as a modality that needs to be supported and worthy of being a good practice as well as a model on develop women’s capacities during pandemic Covid-19 and new normal.

The Evaluation of an Online English Course for Tourism Workers in Ninh Binh from Learners’ Perspective

his article presents the results of a study designed to measure the evaluation of learners on an online English course. A survey questionnaire was distributed to 20-course attendees, who are tourism workers in Ninh Binh province. The results of the survey reveal learners’ positive attitudes towards (1) the course content, (2) the course approach, (3) the course materials, (4) the course management, and (5) the perceived course outcomes. Besides, semi-structured interviews were carried out to pinpoint the difficulties learners encountered throughout the course. Based on the preliminary analyses of this questionnaire form, suggestions for a more efficient application of this online course are proposed.

Praise and recognition from supervisors buffers employee psychological strain: A two-sample investigation with tourism workers.

Focusing on employees with psychological strain, this research draws on Fredrickson's 'undoing hypothesis' to examine praise and recognition from one's supervisor as an organizational resource. A model is tested in which psychological strain is a mediator in the positive relationship between role demands and employees' intentions to take sick leave and seek medical advice, and positions supervisor praise and recognition as a buffer of psychological strain on such intentions. The model was tested using two Australian samples in the tourism sector, consisting of motel workers (n = 104) and museum workers (n = 168). For museum workers, but not motel workers, there was a positive indirect effect of each role demand on sick leave intentions through psychological strain that weakened as a function of supervisor praise and recognition. The proposed moderated mediated model was supported for both samples in regards to intentions to seek medical advice. This research contributes new evidence regarding the antecedents of employees' intentions to take sick leave and seek medical advice for work stress-related problems. It also contributes to the limited evidence regarding supervisor praise and recognition as a protective factor for employees exhibiting the symptoms of psychological strain.

‘Balish’: Bahasa Inggris Dialek Pekerja Pariwisata di Kawasan Wisata Kuta Bali

English plays an important role for workers in the tourism sector of all classes, including wholesalers, massage therapists, parking attendants, and shop assistants. Preliminary observations show that they, in general, use Balinese dialect of English or Balish. This article describes the Balish used in tourism area of Kuta, Bali, by tourism workers who have naturalized the English language by adopting several language features, especially Balinese and Indonesian, such as sentence structures, words, and expressions. The data were analyzed using The New Englishes theory and the results showed that the use of Balinese and Indonesian words in English resulted in the creation of new words, grammatical shifts, changes in word meanings, use of idioms, use of groups of verbs, and repetition of forms. Balish has adopted several grammatical features, both from Balinese and Indonesian, and it is hoped that one day it will have regular speakers so that it becomes a pidgin.

A network analysis of cross-occupational skill transferability for the hospitality industry

PurposeThis paper aims to examine transferable skills and viable career transition pathways for hospitality and tourism workers. Future career prospects are discussed, along with the importance of reskilling for low-wage hospitality workers.Design/methodology/approachA network analysis is conducted to model skill relationships between the hospitality industry and other industries such as health-care and information technology. Multiple data are used in the analysis, including data from the US Department of Labor Occupational Information Network (O*NET), wage data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and job computerization data (Frey and Osborne, 2017).FindingsAlthough hospitality workers have lower than average skills scores when compared to workers from other career clusters included in the analysis, they possess essential soft skills that are valuable in other industries. Therefore, improving hospitality workers’ existing soft skills may help them enhance their cross-sector mobility, which may allow them to obtain jobs with a lower likelihood of computerization.Practical implicationsThe findings shed light on workforce development theories and practice in the hospitality industry by quantitatively analyzing cross-sector skill correlations. Sharpening transferable soft skills will be essential to enhancing hospitality workers’ career development opportunities.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study that specifically examines the skill taxonomy for the hospitality industry and identifies its connection with other in-demand career clusters.

Dampak Pandemi Covid 19 terhadap Pekerja Pariwisata di Bali

This research is a study of crisis caused by Covid 19 pandemic on tourism workers in Bali. The analysis technique used is descriptive qualitative, in which interviews is the main technique of data collection. This research is based on the theory of crisis management (Soemirat & Ardianto, 2005: 181), the steps of handling it, showed by Rhenald Kasali (2003: 231). The purposes of this study are to find out, 1) The opinions of tourism workers in Bali about the economic crisis caused by covid 19 pandemic. 2) What steps have been taken to deal with the economic crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 3) How they view the future of the tourism business especially in their work place in Bali. The results of this study reveal: 1) The tourism workers didn’t realize that the economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic would last for a quite long time. 2) They mostly choose a strategy of adapting their lives to the current conditions, 3) They are able to isolate the crisis in the economic field only and their views of tourism in Bali would return to normal in the future but its development might be slowing down.

The Relevance of Vocational Schools in Sorong City to Company and Industry Need in Papua Barat

The explosion of unemployment rate contributed by vocational schools outcomes had been the major issue becoming the background of this research. This research was aimed at describing the relevance of vocational schools’ curriculum in Sorong City to the company and industry need in Papua Barat Province. The researcher focused the study on investigating the relevance of tourism department’s curriculum to the need of tourism industries and companies based in Papua Barat Province. The research design was descriptive by applying qualitative method of research. Data collection techniques used were observation, interview, questionnaires, and documentations. Data were analyzed by following several steps, such as; data reduction, data presentation, drawing conclusion and verification. The result of the research showed that the curriculum of tourism study program is not relevant to the need of tourism companies and industries. Most of the tourism workers are not graduated from vocational schools providing tourism study programs. Lack of productive teachers has been the main problem of curriculum development at the school. The ministry of education must produce more productive teachers for vocational schools. They must also be equipped with curriculum development skills.

FEMALE TOURISM WORKERS AND THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Women are vulnerable to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. This happened because the pandemic situation made companies generally cut the number of female workers for the first time for reasons of efficiency. This research reveals female tourism workers and the Covid-19 pandemic. The research method used is qualitative, with purposive sampling. The results of the study prove that the Covid-19 pandemic is destroying the business world globally, with the impact of 4500 female tourism workers in Nusa Dua (85%), with a loss of 9 trillion rupiah per month. This situation requires workers who are generally the first to be unpaid live.

PENGELOLAAN HOMESTAY SEBAGAI DAYA DUKUNG DESTINASI WISATA BELITUNG

With the deployment of Belitung as a geopark region by UNESCO, it also saw a significant increase in the growth of the homestay in Belitung. With the devotion of this society, it is expected that the homestay owner will be able to provide the best service given to guests; the homestay owner will need to gain more insight and knowledge on how to make proper and proper bed—enforcement methods. Perform community service through training of homestay management in both theory and practice. The target of dedicated activities is the homestay owner, private employees, entrepreneurs, homemakers, and tourist workers. The result of this activity is (1) a well held, smoothly executed performance, and the participants have the enthusiasm of those participating for three days and two nights; (2) participants are particularly active and follow with high motivation; and (3) trainees gain new skills in making a bed, enabling them to be implemented in the homestay they run so that it can improve the quality of service in their homestay.

Tourism specialisation and education: Leading the way to better labour conditions?

This article studies the returns to education in the Argentinian tourism sector considering tourism specialisation. With data from the Permanent Household and Hotel Occupancy Surveys, we make use of Mincer equations to understand the relation between wages and education. For that, we take into account three different types of agglomerates: Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA), agglomerates more specialised in tourism (AT) and agglomerates less specialised in tourism (ALT). We find that, for tourism workers, there is a penalty in returns to education, which differs according to the type of agglomerate. These negative returns are partially mitigated by tourism specialisation. In CABA, the most developed and specialised destination, there is almost no penalty. In the case of AT, the mitigation is greater than in ALT. Consequently, this specialisation positions AT in the tourism development path leading to the improvement of labour conditions. There should therefore be an interaction between tourism and education, and it is also imperative to generate incentives and partnerships for the improvement of the sector’s training and labour conditions.

Family support and posttraumatic growth among tourism workers during the COVID-19 shutdown: The role of positive stress mindset.

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a severe hit on the health of workers in the tourism industry. It is crucial to understand how to help the workforce in this service industry become resilient and adaptive through this crisis. The primary objective of this research is to examine how family support nurtures tourism workers' posttraumatic growth (PTG), an adaptation form in the resilience process. The valid data were collected from 384 tourism workers who were on unpaid leave or layoff during the COVID-19 crisis. The results demonstrated the positive relationship between family support and tourism workers' PTG, for which positive stress mindset was identified as a mediation mechanism. Deliberate and intrusive ruminative thinking styles moderated the effect of family support on positive stress mindset. Theoretical and practical implications of the mechanisms through which family support promotes tourism workers’ PTG are discussed.

Exploring skill-based career transitions for entry-level hospitality and tourism workers

This research note explores the prospect of cross-industry, skill-based career transitions for workers in entry-level hospitality and tourism positions. The note reports on the lack of hospitality and tourism literature currently discussing career transitions and uses the Occupational Information Network (ONet) database to develop SWAT (skill, work activity, ability, technology skill) profiles for two entry-level hospitality/tourism positions. The profiles are used to identify areas where skills overlap with different entry-level positions from other industries, such as information technology, business/finance, healthcare, and education. The findings reveal that (1) the number of hospitality and tourism research studies that critically consider career transitions and barriers are limited, (2) the skill profiles of entry-level hospitality and tourism positions overlap with different entry-level jobs from other industries, and (3) hospitality and tourism workers should enhance their technology skills to increase their employability. Lastly, theoretical and practical implications are provided.

PRECARITY, AGENCY, AND UNSUSTAINABILITY: THE MOBILITY OF YOUNG ADULT TOURISM WORKERS IN BANFF NATIONAL PARK, CANADA

This article focuses on young adults who travel to work and live in the Rocky Mountain resort destination of Banff National Park in western Canada. This is usually an early work experience in the lives of these young workers, often their first. I discuss the patterns and the impact of the work mobility of young adult tourism workers using three different frames of understanding: (a) the precarious employment associated with the tourism industry itself; (b) the specific place and community of Banff and how it shapes particular conditions of precarity and agency within the tourism industry and for young tourism workers’ experiences; and (c) the young adult tourism workers themselves — their motives for work and travel, their experiences of work, and their agency in navigating the tourism industry in Banff. Using these three frames, I examine the impact of precarity and agency on the transfer of work knowledge, on the sustainability of the tourism industry work and the community, and on the young adult tourism workers’ future work experiences. It is critical to examine work precarity, worker agency, and job and community sustainability in order to understand more fully the experiences of mobility of young adult tourism workers, and their early work experiences. This is all the more important as, in a climate of economic change and restructuring, young adult workers are becoming central to the consideration of employment policy issues.

The historical structuring of the U.S. tourism workforce: a critical review

Although tourism jobs have been acknowledged as being low-wage, low-quality, and at times even dangerous, investigations have yet to look at the historical development of such characteristics. Using the concepts of invisible work and strategic alterity, this article offers a critical historical analysis of the ideas and institutions that have shaped the tourism workforce in the U.S. since the late 19th century. The examples provided here focus on the ways that different markers of identity have characterized tourism workers providing the low-wage or non-wage labor in the industry. The ideological arguments justifying the differential power in the U.S. labor market are examined within the context of the U.S. with suggestions for more critical, work-centered approaches to exploring the current tourism workforce.

Covid-19 Sonrası Konaklama Tesislerinde Yeni Uygulama: Güvenli Turizm Sertifikasyon Programı

Covid-19 pandemic, as in many countries in social and economic activities in Turkey has affected in a negative way. One of the sectors that felt the most consequences of this effect is the tourism sector. Crisis management and precautionary policies are implemented in order to prevent possible problems that may arise in the tourism sector as in other sectors. The measures taken by both the state and the society in order to control the pandemic have been named as "New normal" and a new era has begun. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism has implemented the 'Safe Tourism Certification Program', which extends from tourism workers to visitors in Turkey, by taking a series of measures to ensure that all visitors have a holiday within this scope.The purpose of this study is to examine the Safe Tourism Certification Program, which includes the practices taken in the accommodation facilities with the circulars containing the sector-specific measures issued by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. In the light of the evaluations, at the end of the study, it is revealed that consumers prioritize health and hygiene factors apart from their previous habits in the travel decision and purchasing process and make travel decisions according to the precautions taken.

Aligning tourism's socio-economic impact with the United Nations' sustainable development goals

Socio-economic sustainability for tourism workers does not play a prominent role in contemporary tourism economic impact studies. Rather, to promote economic growth paradigms, the focus lies on aggregated employment and income effects. To better understand tourism's contribution to decent work and reduced inequalities (Sustainable Development Goals 8 and 10, respectively), our study assesses tourism's socio-economic impact by focussing on meso-level perspectives from major tourism institutions that are complemented with macro-level results gained through an occupation-based Input-Output model. Although income inequalities across tourism occupations remain relatively low, income inequalities over a period of nine years have increased. Tourism employees continue to work in precarious occupations due to limited training and career opportunities. Employers demand skilled vocational professions and provide non-monetary benefits; however, respective salaries remain average. Altogether, tourism contributes to Sustainable Development Goals 8 and 10 only moderately, and regional tourism institutions need to continue their development strategies for greater sustainability.

Legal Protection of CBT Workers in Terms of Wages: A Case Study in Bedah Menoreh Pathway

One of the most vital industries with significant potential for development in Indonesia is the tourism industry. The current trend of the tourism industry development tends to lean towards Community-Based Tourism or CBT. Thus, the focus of this research is the legal protection of CBT workers, especially in terms of wages at Bedah Menoreh Pathway. This research aimed to collated and analyzed existing models of wages legal protection for CBT workers and compare them with Indonesian laws and regulations pertaining to Bedah Menoreh Tourism Supporting Path development. This research is empirical normative research. Analysis was conducted through systematizing and defining acquired data chronologically and on the basis of forms of legal protection as stated in laws and regulations. Based on the findings and analysis, several factors caused the absence of legal protection of CBT workers especially in terms of wages. The researcher concludes that there must be a new pattern on wages regulation mechanism that will protect tourism workers relative to the condition of this unique CBT Attraction.Keywords: Bedah Menoreh pathway, CBT Worker, legal protection, wages.

Decent work and tourism workers in the age of intelligent automation and digital surveillance

Technology is shifting not only how the tourism industry is run but also the nature of work, working conditions and management control. This article examines the potential implications of technology-driven transformations on lower-paid lower-skilled tourism workers. With tourism expected to be the sector most affected by intelligent automation, greater attention needs to be given to the variegated impact on the workforce. Drawing on the concepts of surveillance capitalism, disruptive innovation and techno-solutionism, the article problematises these transformations and unpacks the rhetoric used by tourism and technology companies. Situating the discussion within UN Sustainable Development Goal 8 (SDG8), the article explores how – without proactive regulatory measures and worker-centric approaches – the expansion of intelligent automation in tourism workplaces risks exacerbating inequalities and precarisation of lower-skilled workers, exposing them to job losses and dislocation, dehumanising their role and gradually automating them out. Additionally, digital surveillance may shift power further towards employers, reducing worker agency and impacting on worker wellbeing. Overall, despite clear benefits, unfettered intelligent automation and digital surveillance risk disrupting established worker rights and protections and inadvertently moving the tourism sector away from the ideals of decent work for all.

The increasing intention of tourist loyalty through geopark destination attributes (the research of ciletuh-palabuhanratu geopark visitors)

The tourism industry was the sector most affected during the Covid19 pandemic, which had consequences for the economic downturn. Data estimates that 15 million tourism workers have the potential to lose their livelihoods by the end of 2020. So action to restore the tourism industry needs to be taken immediately. Efforts to restore, develop and improve tourist destinations can be carried out by conducting studies on tourist loyalty which can be influenced by destination attributes. The most important destination attribute at this time is the application of health protocols in tourist areas by all interested parties. The purpose of this research is to determine the influence that the destination attributes contribute to the loyalty intentions of tourists. The method used in this research is verification with the population, namely tourists who have visited the Ciletuh-Pelabuhanratu Geopark at least once and wishing to make visits in the future. The analytical method used is the Spearman rank correlation, the coefficient of determination, and the t test with a significance level of five percent. This study found that the destination attribute gave an influence of 40.84% on the loyalty intentions of tourists. © 2021 Karadeniz Technical University. All rights reserved.
