Green synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles using Simarouba glauca leaf extract, characterization and screening for their biological applications

The biological synthesis of metallic nanoparticles using plants has received a lot of attention because of their ability to decrease metallic ions by using the phytochemicals in them. The current study emphasizes the green synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) with Simarouba glauca leaf extract. The synthesis of CuO NPs was characterized using UV-vis spectrophotometry, FTIR indicated the presence of different metabolites involved in the formation of nanoparticles, XRD showed the crystalline nature, SEM images indicated the rod shaped CuO NPs with the average size from 190 to 265 nm, EDS and mapping analysis showed the formation of CuO NPs with purity, and TEM analysis indicated the agglomerated and rod shaped CuO NPs. The average size of the nanoparticle was found to be 85 nm with zeta potential of −5.2 mV. TGA and DSC were performed to know the stability of the nanoparticle. Further, CuO NPs were assessed for their applications like antioxidant, antimicrobial properties. The anti-angiogenic, in vitro cell viability assay was performed using NPs against HCT-116, IC50 value to be 17.48 ± 0.6 µg/mL and HeLa cell lines, IC50 values to be 20.21 ± 0.33 µg/mL. The anti-ROS properties for both cell lines were assessed using histogram.

Size-controlled synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles with a supercritical hydrothermal synthesis method

Supercritical hydrothermal synthesis (SCHS) is a promising technique for the preparation of copper oxide nanoparticles with fast reaction rate, green efficiency and low cost. In this paper, nanoparticles of copper oxide ranging from 53.0 to 94.0 nm were synthesized by supercritical hydrothermal method. The effects of different precursor concentrations, alkali addition, reaction pressure, reaction temperature and reaction time on the particle size, morphology and particle uniformity of copper oxide nanoparticles were also investigated, and the mechanism of each parameter was analyzed. The growth kinetic equation of copper oxide nanoparticles under supercritical hydrothermal conditions was established by analyzing the influence laws of temperature and reaction time on the grain size of the products. Further, the growth activation energy and the growth mechanism controlled by the grain surface process was obtained. The formation mechanism of copper oxide nanoparticles in rod form was analyzed by TEM results.

Synthesis of CuO, ZnO nanoparticles, and CuO-ZnO nanocomposite for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B: a comparative study

Water pollution, arising from the presence of toxic dyes and chemicals, is a global challenge, urging the need for eco-friendly solutions in water decontamination. This study focused on the synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs), zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), and a bimetallic CuO-ZnO nanocomposite (CZ NC) through an environmentally friendly method employing Tragia involucrata L. leaf extract. Comprehensive analysis of structural and optical properties involved using various analytical techniques such as XRD, FT-IR, XPS, UV-DRS, PL, FE-SEM, EDAX, TEM, SAED, zeta potential, TGA, and BET. In comparison to pristine CuO and ZnO NPs, the CZ-NC demonstrated notably enhanced photocatalytic activity in the degradation of Rhodamine B dye (RhB). The optimum conditions for RhB degradation were found to be a pH of 9 and a catalyst dosage of 1 mg/mL for a concentration of 10 ppm. Under these conditions, CuO NPs, ZnO NPs, and CZ-NC demonstrated high efficiencies of 78%, 83%, and 96.1% respectively over 105 min. Through LC-HRMS, the identification of degradation products offered valuable insights into the pathway of photocatalytic degradation. Furthermore, toxicity analysis of intermediates, conducted through ECOSAR software, indicated the formation of non-toxic by-products (ChV/LC50/EC50 > 100) after the completion of the reaction. Furthermore, the recycled catalysts exhibited sustained stability for up to 4 cycles, with only a minor decrease in activity of up to 6.8%. This confirms their catalytic efficacy in purifying polluted water. This research significantly contributes to the progress of environmentally friendly nanocomposites, enhancing their efficacy in the realm of environmental remediation.

Biosynthesized copper oxide nanoparticles by Psidium guajava plants with antibacterial, antidiabetic, antioxidant, and photocatalytic capacity

AbstractWith an increasing focus on green technologies, this research aimed to synthesize copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) using leaf extracts from Allahabad Safeda and Hisar Safeda for environmental and health protection. A range of concentrations of leaf extracts were employed in the synthesis of nanoparticles, utilizing 1–9% extract from Allahabad Safeda and 3–11% extract from Hisar Safeda. The synthesized CuO-NPs were characterized by UV–visible spectrophotometry, Dynamic light scattering, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and Scanning electron microscope with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. CuO-NPs synthesized using 3% Allahabad Safeda extract and 5% Hisar Safeda extract exhibited a particle size of 15.88 nm and 14.05 nm, respectively. CuO-NPs synthesized with Allahabad Safeda extract exhibited superior antibacterial, antioxidant, antidiabetic, and photocatalytic properties. Their antibacterial tests demonstrated significant inhibition zones against Staphylococcus aureus (20.5 cm), Streptococcus latis (20.7 cm), Escherichia coli (19.5 cm), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (19.7 mm). Additionally, CuO-NPs from Allahabad Safeda extract (70 µg/mL) exhibited 68.23% of scavenging activity against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl. Moreover, the same CuO-NPs at 100 µg/mL concentration showed 67.32% α-amylase inhibition and 75.18% α-glucosidase inhibition, confirming their antidiabetic activities. Furthermore, these nanoparticles demonstrated high performance in photocatalytic degradation, by degrading 82.31% methylene blue and 88.54% crystal violet within 150 min of UV irradiation. Overall, the findings highlight the feasibility of CuO-NPs synthesis using Allahabad Safeda extract and their potential applications in antibacterial treatment, combating diabetes, antioxidation, and environmentally friendly dye photodegradation process. Quince (Cydonia oblonga) seed hydrogel-based green synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles for photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue and methyl orange

Organic dyes discharged from various industries pose a significant hazard to humans and the environment, and a valid approach is needed to remove dangerous and harmful substances from industrial effluents. The present study synthesized novel CuO nanoparticles (CuO NPs) using a hydrogel derived from C. oblonga seeds. The green synthesis of NPs was confirmed visually by the formation of black precipitates. The as-prepared NPs exhibited a prominent peak at wavelength 379 nm and an estimated band gap energy value of 4.23 eV. FTIR analysis revealed a distinguishing peak at 594 cm−1 due to Cu-O stretching vibrations. The SEM images showed sheet-like NPs with an average size of 69 nm. Further, the EDX spectrum disclosed copper (31.1%) and oxygen (32.6%) as main elements. At optimized reaction conditions of irradiation time (120 min), catalyst load (5.0 mg), and dye solution (10 ppm), CuO NPs demonstrated significant degradation of methylene blue (88.2%) and methyl orange (83.1%), following pseudo-first-order kinetics. CuO NPs retained over 70% of their initial photocatalytic efficiency for up to three repetition cycles. Hence, C. oblonga seed hydrogel could be an excellent biomaterial for developing green, sustainable, and recyclable photocatalysts for environmentally favorable applications.

Pharmacological Effect of Copper Oxide Nanoparticles of Azadirachta indica Leaf Extract and Application for its Antibacterial Properties

ABSTRACT Nanoparticles prepared from bio-reduction agents are of keen interest to researchers around the globe due to their ability to mitigate the harmful effects of chemicals. In this regard, the present study aims to synthesize copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs). CuNPs show a characteristic absorption peak at 347 nm, while SEM reveals the spherical but agglomerated shape of CuNPs of the size within the range of 51.26–56.66 nm. The crystallite size measured by using XRD was found to be within a range of 23.38–46.64 nm for ginger-doped CuO and 26–56 nm for garlic-doped CuO. The X-ray diffraction analysis shows the crystalline structure of copper nanoparticles with prominent peaks. Bragg’s reflection of copper nanoparticles shows diffraction peaks around 2θ =43.4°, 50.3°, and 74.39°, representing [111], [200], and [220] crystallographic planes of face-centered cubic (fcc). The synthesized CuO NPs tested antibacterial properties against various strains of microorganisms, including Escherichia coli, 25 μg/mL 2.3 ± 0.21 and 100 μg/mL 6.5 ± 0.17, Staphylococcus aureus, 25 μg/mL 2.3 ± 0.29 and 100 μg/mL 11.5 ± 1.17, Streptococcus mutans, 25 μg/mL 01.05 ± 0.21 and 100 μg/mL 15.8 ± 0.17, Enterococcus faecalis). The short novelty of Azadirachta indica lies in its potential relevance to human health, as it has been found to possess bioactive compounds with various medicinal properties, such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities, making it a promising natural resource for therapeutic applications.

Biosynthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles using Tecoma stans flower extract and its antibacterial, anticancer, and photocatalytic activities

Now a days, green synthesis of metallic nanoparticles obtained huge special attention owing to their safe, biocompatible and biodegradable nature. Here, we describe the green synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) using Tecoma stans (T. stans) flower extract. The physico-chemical properties of the CuO NPs were studied using different characterization techniques. The UV Visible spectrum showed a characteristic peak at 360 nm confirming the synthesis of green CuO NPs. FE-SEM study clearly indicated that synthesized CuO NPs are in spherical shaped morphologies. The green synthesized CuO NPs were carried out bactericidal activity against various clinical pathogens by agar well diffusion techniques. Interestingly, CuO NPs were exhibited very good bacterial killing efficiency against of Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria. The in vitro anticancer activity of the T. stans flower mediated CuO NPs were tested against A549 lung cancer cell line. Further, AO/EtBr staining assay used to determine the apoptotic changes in cancer cell treated with CuO NPs were identified by fluorescence microscopy. The dye-degrading capability of the synthesized CuO NPs were assessed against methylene blue dye (MB) molecules. Finally, this study reveals that the synthesized nanomaterials could performed as a promising candidate in numerous biomedical applications like antimicrobial, anticancer, and dye degradation system.

Adsorptive removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solution by using green synthesized copper oxide nanoparticles

Metal nanoparticles can be synthesized by “green synthesis” methods, an efficient and environmentally friendly process that involves combination of metal salt solution with plant extract. Due to low cost, ideal surface area, plenty of active sites, and high adsorption capabilities, copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) have drawn a lot of attention as effective adsorbents. Our present study is primarily concerned about green synthesis route of producing copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) from flower extract of Nyctanthesarbor-tristis. The prepared CuO-NPs was used in the adsorption of toxic metal ions including U(VI), Pb(II), Cr(VI), and Cd(II) from water samples was studied. Different analytical techniques like UV-visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy has been used for analyzing the properties of prepared copper oxide nanoparticles. A batch experiment has also been conducted to determine the efficacy of the synthesized copper oxide nanoparticles toward the adsorption of toxic metal ions including U(VI), Pb(II), Cr(VI), and Cd(II) from water samples at various parameters, such as the impact of pH, contact time and adsorbent dosage. According to the results, the adsorption capacity (qmax) of CuO-NPs for U(VI), Pb(II), Cr(VI), and Cd(II) metal ions are 200, 155.27, 131.57 and 90.90 respectively. The kinetic studies showed that the pseudo-second order kinetics model has best fits to the data (R2= 0.85, 0.91, 0.89, 0.92 for U(VI), Pb(II), Cr(VI), and Cd(II) respectively. The study also included pseudo-first order, Elovich models and intra particle diffusion. In light of these findings, copper oxide nanoparticles were found to be a promising nano-adsorbent for the treatment of water.

Green synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles using christia vespertilionis aerial parts extract: A sustainable approach for antibacterial efficacy assessment

Metal nanoparticles typically exhibit sizes ranging from 1 to 100 nanometers and can be produced by several techniques, such as green synthesis and chemical synthesis. This study focuses on the green synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) using aerial extract of Christia vespertilionis. The observation of CuO-NPs formation was made based on the variations in colour exhibited by the extract mixture following the introduction of copper (II) sulphate (CuSO4). The synthesised nanoparticles underwent characterization utilising various instrumentation techniques, including UV-Vis spectrophotometry, FTIR, TEM, SEM, EDX, and TGA. The antibacterial activity of these nanoparticles was assessed by using disc diffusion method, against selected Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The investigation also encompassed an examination of the combined effect of the nanoparticles and the antibiotic Ciprofloxacin on antibacterial activity. In this study, it was noted that the maximum absorbance of the CuO-NPs occurred at a wavelength of 253nm. The functional groups of the CuO-NPs were confirmed through FTIR spectrum. TEM analysis revealed the average particle size of the CuO-NPs as 62.16 nm. Additionally, examination of SEM images revealed that the particles exhibited irregular shapes while maintaining a homogeneous distribution. The nanoparticles exhibited enhanced antibacterial efficacy against Gram-positive bacteria in comparison to the Gram-negative bacteria that were examined. Significant synergistic effect was shown when the CuoNPs were used with the antibiotic against the bacteria tested. In conclusion, the study conducted demonstrates favorable outcomes as an antibacterial agent and recommended to conduct additional research to investigate the mechanism of action and toxicity of this agent.

Walnut Shell Catalyzed Synthesis of Copper Oxide Nanoparticles under UV Irradiation, their Characterization and Synergism as Bacterial Inhibitor

One of the possibilities for the creation of metal nanoparticles is the reduction of transition metal salts using a greener technique. Walnut shell (WS) is an agricultural waste that comprises of cellulose and lignin and is natural, cheap and worthless. Walnut shell is a biodegradable polymer with –OH groups which are biocompatible and renewable. In the present study, we synthesized copper oxide nanoparticles from copper (II) sulfate pentahydrate in an aqueous medium catalyzed by walnut shell under UV Irradiation. WS here acts as the reducing and capping agent as well. Synthesized nanoparticles were studied using UV-Vis, XRD, SEM, EDX and FTIR analysis. Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were used to test antibacterial activity.

Application of green synthesized copper oxide nanoparticles for effective mitigation of Fusarium wilt disease in roots of Cicerarietinum

The study investigated the impact of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) on Fusarium wilt in chickpea. CuONPs, synthesized using coffee powder, were subjected to washing and sonication using Milli-Q water as the solvent during the purification process. Subsequently the nanoparticles were characterized through UV–vis spectroscopy, DLS, Zeta Potential and FTIR analysis. The NPs exhibited a size range of 85–100 nm with a zeta potential of −25.3 mV. Seven days old chickpea seedlings treated with different concentrations of CuONP (10, 25, 50 ppm) via root immersion showed a significant reduction in Fusarium infection severity. Treatment with 10 and 25 ppm CuONPs led to a remarkable 74.5% and 50% decrease in wilt incidence, along with increased root and shoot length, protein, tannin, phenolics, and flavonoid content in chickpea seedlings, grown in Fusarium infected soil. Enzyme activity (PAL, PPO, NR) was enhanced, while proline, H2O2, and MDA content decreased in 10 and 25 ppm CuONPs treated seedlings. A reduced activity of APX and SOD was also recorded in 10 and 25 ppm CuONPs treated seedlings. Chlorophyll content increased by 50.08% in 10 ppm treated seedlings but decreased with 25 and 50 ppm. The findings emphasize the protective role of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) at a lower concentration of 10 ppm against Fusarium wilt disease. This protective effect is manifested through the reduction of oxidative stress, decreased wilt incidence, and an increased biomass.

Methylene Blue Removal by Copper Oxide Nanoparticles Obtained from Green Synthesis of Melia azedarach: Kinetic and Isotherm Studies

In this study, Melia azedarach fruit extract was used as a reducing agent and copper chloride dihydrate (CuCl2·2H2O) was used as a precursor in the synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs). The UV–visible spectrum showed a characteristic absorption peak of CuO NPs at 350 nm. The surface properties of the adsorbent were analyzed through various techniques, indicating the successful formation of CuO NPs. The impacts of several factors, including initial pH (4 to 8), a dose of CuO NPs adsorbent (0.01–0.05 g), dye initial concentration (10–50 mg·L−1), and contact times ranging from 5 to 120 min, were examined in batch adsorption studies. Based on the experimental results, the Langmuir isotherm is well-fitted, indicating MB dye monolayer capping on the CuO NPs surface with 26.738 mg·g−1 as a maximum adsorption capacity Qm value. For the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, the experimental and calculated adsorption capacity values (qe) exhibited good agreement.

The development of an environment-friendly process for synthesizing nanoparticles in the field of bionanotechnology is growing day-by-day. Increasing drug resistance in microbes has compelled researchers to synthesize biologically active nanoparticles. In this study, we used Tribulus terrestris plant extract to synthesize CuO/NaCuSO4 nanocomposite. The synthesized samples were characterized through functional groups analysis of FTIR and morphological analysis of SEM. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and ultra-visible light absorbance analysis (UV–vis) were used to find the nanocrystalline nature and bandgap energy of the biosynthesized copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles, respectively. In the metal oxide region of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy the copper oxide nanoparticles were confirmed at 523 cm−1 which showed the nature of plant extracts to control over the reduction and stabilizing of the nanoparticles. The Rietveld refinement analysis yielded unit cell compositions of 53.39% for CuO and 46.61% for NaCuSO4, respectively. The monoclinic structure of CuO was confirmed, and the crystalline size was calculated as 37 nm by XRD analysis. From UV–vis spectroscopy, the absorption peak was observed at 277 and 337 nm, revealing the presence of CuO nanoparticles. In fact, the cluster-like morphology patterns are captured by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and particle sizes were observed around 102 nm. Finally, the dielectric properties of the synthesized copper oxide nanoparticles have been examined and reported in detail.

Characterization And Antimicrobial Activity of Copper Oxide Nanoparticles Synthesized by Crocus Sativus Extract

This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of green synthesized copper-oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) using Crocus sativus. The microorganisms were supplied from Baghdad Teaching Hospital. Using C. sativus, CuO nanoparticles were synthesized in a green manner, and their properties were assessed using UV-visible spectroscopy at the peak of 260 nm. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to measure the particles' size and form, and x-ray technology was used to more precisely quantify their dimensions. diffraction (XRD). The biomolecule and functional group were determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Different concentrations of nanoparticles (50, 75, and 100 ?g/ml) were subjected to the well diffusion method for antibacterial activity testing. The findings indicated that the CuO-NPs had a spherical form and a 0.154 nm size. The average diameters of the AFM pictures were found to be 11.89 nm, 2.62 nm, and 24.55 nm. The following growth zone inhibition values for the various bacteria species used were revealed by the nanoparticles' antimicrobial activity results: Staphylococcus aureus 18 mm, Staphylococcus epidermidis 18 mm, Klebsiella ssp 15 mm, Candida albican 18 mm, and Escherichia coli 17mm.

Biosynthesized CuO nanoparticles–coated grating sensors for temperature measurement

In this study, we demonstrate temperature sensing using a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) fixed on a Teflon substrate with a large thermal expansion coefficient. A significant enhancement in sensitivity was achieved by coating the fiber with green synthesized copper oxide nanoparticles. This improvement was characterized by UV–visible spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and other techniques. The behavior of the coated materials is unique in their response to thermal stability based on the mode of coating. We have examined the thermal responses of FBG sensors mounted on temperature units on and after coating. The designed sensor is compact, cost effective, and measures temperatures in the range of 25 °C–200 °C. It demonstrated a linear relationship between the wavelength shift and temperature change along with 0.59 pm/ oC enhancement in the sensitivity. However, by optimizing the materials and physical dimensions of FBG, it is possible to increase the range of temperature detection, thereby improving the sensor’s performance. It is observed that the sensitivity of the nanoparticles-coated FBG is better than that of the bare FBG for all temperature ranges.

Is the trend toward a sustainable green synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles completely safe for Oreochromis niloticus when compared to chemical ones?: using oxidative stress, bioaccumulation, and histological biomarkers.

Scientists worldwide have noticed that cutting-edge technologies can be used to produce nanoparticles (NPs) in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way, instead of the old methods. However, the effectiveness of this approach for aquatic environments and species still needs to be determined. Therefore, this study aims to compare between the toxicity of green and chemically synthesized copper oxide nanoparticles (GS and CS) CuO NPs at two different concentrations on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) using various biomarkers. CuO NPs' formation was proved, and their different characterizations were recorded. Then, the fish samples were randomly allocated in glass aquaria into five groups: one acted as a control group, and the other groups were exposed to two concentrations (25 and 50mg/L) of GS-CuO NPs and CS-CuO NPs, separately, for 4days. After the experimental time, in all groups that were exposed to two concentrations of both synthesized CuO NPs, the results revealed that glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels were elevated in the liver and gills compared to glutathione reduced (GSH) content, which showed a significant decline. Bioaccumulation of Cu was more prevalent in the liver than in the gills, and the highest bioaccumulation capacity was more evident in the groups exposed to CS-CuO NPs. Moreover, the bioaccumulation of Cu caused severe histological changes in the liver and gills. In conclusion, the results suggested that GS-CuO NPs revealed less toxicity than CS-CuO NPs to the examined fish. However, they are still toxic, and their toxic effect cannot be overlooked.

Present study demonstrates the preparation of Copper Oxide Nanoparticles (CuO NPs) with novel plant of Macroptilium lathyroides (L) due to its low inexpensive, accessibility, functional benefits, and green strategy method. Various techniques such as UV–visible, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis, X-ray diffraction, Transmission Electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were employed to characterize the CuO NPs. UV–Visible and FTIR analysis used to find the presence of bioactive molecules which are responsible for reduction and stabilization of CuO NPs. XRD results revealed the monoclinic structure of the synthesized CuO NPs. The SEM and TEM analysis were confirmed that the average crystallite size was 18.9 nm. The results of the present study reveal that MB degradation rate was about 98 % accomplished. In addition, biological applications such as antioxidant, antibacterial, cytotoxicity, anticancer and antifungal behaviours were reported. Disc diffusion method was performed to test the antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Further, antifungal activity studied against the fungal strains such as Candida Albicans and Trichoderma viride. Antifungal activity at higher concentration of CuO NPs reveal that Staphylococcus aureus showed maximum zone of inhibition about 14 mm, and Candida Albicans showed about 15 mm. MTT assay was carried to analyse the cytotoxicity and anticancer activity against VERO cell line and MCF 7 cell line for the synthesized CuO NPs. From the results, MCF 7 cell line with IC50 =71.02 show better activity against CuO NPs. Antioxidant activity of CuO NPs performed by DPPH method, with an IC50–86.96 µg/mL. In accordance with the results obtained, the synthesised CuO NPs proves to be an effective material in terms of bioremediation of domestic and industrial waste by killing pathogenic bacteria, breaking down of colourant and stimulating antifungal agents.
