Comparative analysis of Bootstrap and Foundation CSS frameworks

The article presents a comparative analysis of the CSS frameworks Bootstrap and Foundation, determining which technology is the most effective for creating responsive websites. For the purposes of conducting research experiments, two analogous websites were created using the aforementioned technologies. Both technologies were subjected to comparative evaluation based on criteria such as: compatibility with mobile and desktop devices, website loading time, file size and number of code lines, browser compatibility, available components, and support.

Implementing QR code and Geolocation Technologies for the Student Attendance System

Attendance is one of the important factors in supporting lecture activities that can be used to see how well the performance of student attendance in class. Traditional attendance systems used in various educational institutions often cause problems. This research aims to develop an innovative and efficient student attendance system to help the process of taking attendance by utilizing QR-Code and geo-location technologies at Klabat University. The research method employed for this development is the Prototyping Model, which involves iterative development and refinement processes. The system is designed as a web-based application and a mobile application, developed using PHP as the programming language, MySQL as the database management system, Bootstrap 5 as the CSS and JavaScript framework for creating responsive websites, Apache as the web server and Ubuntu 22.04 as the operating system for the server. QR-Code technology is proposed as a medium for recording and verifying student attendance, while Geo-Location technology is used to verify the presence of students in the right lecture venue. The results of this research are expected to make a positive contribution to Klabat University in terms of recording student attendance.

“Consent notices are obstructing my view”: Viewing sticky elements on responsive websites under the magnifying glass

The practice of using consent notices on websites has received much criticism and attention among researchers. Much of the research has addressed unethical aspects of consent notices while less attention has been devoted to implications for accessibility. This study thus set out to explore implications of such elements for low vision users who rely on browser magnification to access information on the web. A selection of the 100 most frequently used or formally important websites in Norway was manually studied with heuristic evaluation to assess their accessibility with high magnification. The results show that a large portion of the websites contained blocking consent notices that make the websites inaccessible while magnified. Also, most of the websites employed sticky permanent elements such as navigation menus that obstruct much, in some cases all, of the screen real estate in the magnified view. The study also uncovered patterns that preserve accessibility. A key implication of this study is that web developers should consider narrow use cases explicitly. Recommendations are provided on how to avoid inaccessibility for users relying on magnification in narrow viewports.

To wrap or not to wrap? A study of how long words are split when reflowed on magnified web pages

AbstractMany low-vision users adjust the browser zoom level to make text more comfortable to read. Responsive websites attempt to fit the content within the viewport width, but several types of problems can potentially occur; long words may be wider than the viewport and thus partially hidden, they may cause large vertical space breaks, and words may be unnecessarily split or incorrectly split. This study set out to get insight into such word wrapping problems on responsive web pages. To help identify word wrapping issues, the tool HYPHERSPACE was developed. Experiments run on 91 websites suggest that hyphenation-related problems are prevalent. Excessive wrapping of words and overflowing words were the most notable problem on about 90% of the websites. One implication of this study is that web designers need to explicitly design for narrow viewports. The proposed tool can help web designers identify hyphenation problems on responsive web pages viewed with high magnification.

Flask is a micro web application framework written in Python and uses Werkzeug and Jinja2 dependencies. by creating a webset framework using bootsrap. because Bootstrap is an HTML, CSS, and Javascript framework that functions to design responsive websites quickly and easily.

Design Factors to Improve the Consistency and Sustainable User Experience of Responsive Interface Design

Computers have been extended to a variety of devices, such as smart phones, tablets, and smart watches, thereby increasing the importance of responsive interfaces across multi-terminal devices. To ensure a consistent and sustainable user experience for websites and software products, it is important to study the layout, design elements, and users’ visual perception of different terminal interfaces. In this paper, the multi-terminal interfaces of 40 existing responsive websites were studied in a hierarchical grouping experiment, and six typical interface layouts were classified and extracted. Then, the main design factors affecting interface consistency of the responsive website were extracted and classified through eye tracking and a questionnaire survey. Finally, taking a sales management software tool (SA) as an example for design application, we successfully created responsive interfaces across multi-terminal devices with a consistent and sustainable experience.

Electronic Attendance with Android-Based QR Code at STMIK Pringsewu to Improve Student and Lecturer Discipline in Lectures

Technology can be used in various fields. One of them is in the field of Education. In this case, it can be done to process databases, and process academic information data, for example: lecture systems, assessment systems, curriculum information, education management or learning materials. It can also implement the system gradually starting from a smaller scope to expanding, making it easier to manage the use of IT in the process of providing education. Electronic Attendance with an Android-based QR code is an application which is able to read the QR code from each user or student scanned by the lecturer in the attendance list process for a course. The development of the Electronic Attendance system with QR code based on Android uses the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) system and is described by the Data Flow Diagram (DFD), Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) and Flowchart models followed by web design using Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP) programming, and My Structured Query Language (MySQL), Javascript, and Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) which produces responsive websites and is converted with android studio into applications

Concepts of user experience design and their role in achieving ease of use and effectiveness of responsive educational websites

UXD is one of the most important strategies for the interactive design of educational websites, which increases learnability & ease of use. Designing an educational site requires a careful study of the characteristics of devices, user experience, design standards & visual treatments to ensure the best interaction between the learner & devices, despite the lack of theoretical and technical bases related to it.The research discusses the concept, processes, & approach to user experience, levels of UXD for educational websites, theoretical foundations & principles, the relationship between responsive design & UX, & usability components.vision processes are the most effective for the visual system to receive information and process it through the brain, supporting the strategy of responsive design which focuses on visual treatments that affect the cognitive load & mental abilities. UXD for responsive websites achieves a visual system that adapts to different devices and directs the student to information in a flexible way that meets his needs and expectations.Research findings: Importance of organizational framework for the cognitive structure. Working memory has limited capabilities in the amount of information it receives at one time. Learnability is the most important principle of UXD. The lower the perceptual load, the greater the visual system's ability. Graphic interfaces are a visual space for information that is displayed with systematic relationships according to the user experience. A responsive learning environment must suit the nature of each user & every device in a way that ensures the achievement of the required educational goal.

Local government website usability on mobile devices: test results and recommendations

PurposeThe range of official business that can be handled online has grown in the recent decade. In many cases, e-services are a must. At the same time, the economic impact and social importance of mobile technology have increased. Mobile devices are becoming more and more popular, and their applications diversify. It comes as no surprise that mobile users expect e-services and official information to be available through this channel. The purpose of this paper is to identify problems (difficulties) occurring when browsing websites of local government units (LGU) on mobile devices.Design/methodology/approachThe comfort of website browsing depends mostly on the development technique, and the way content is published. Responsive websites are much easier to view on mobile devices than “static” ones. The study involves 400 websites of LGU in Poland. The websites were subjected to quantitative and qualitative analyses with selected techniques and computer tools.FindingsThe set of 400 websites contained 119 (29.75%) that were not responsive. It exhibited a substantial potential for the optimisation of websites for mobile devices. The study revealed the most common usability failures such as distorted images, “scattered icons”, partial responsiveness and bothersome messages in pop-ups.Originality/valueThe research identified the most widespread problems with the tested websites. The study yielded recommendations for local governments, which may be useful when managing content, upgrading the website or replacing it with a new one.

Esplorasi website Perpustakaan Universitas Harvard, Universitas Gadjah Mada dan Universitas Telkom

Introduction. This article evaluates library websites of world class universities in Indonesia from several aspects including features, responsibility, and speed. One library website overseas is explored as a reference: Harvard University. 
 Data Collection Method. This is a literature study exploring features on library websites of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) and Telkom University.
 Data analysis. The study used Harvard University library website as a reference. The results were presented into tables to discuss library websites of UGM and Telkom University.
 Results and Discussion. Harvard University library webiste has 21 features except gallery, UGM has 11 features and Telkom University has 12 features similar to Harvard University library webiste. Our result showed that Library website of UGM and Telkom University still need to be improved as required to be a world class university. All three websites has an adjustable display depending on devices in accessing websites. Those three websites were considered as responsive websites. Based on PageSpeed Insight, they showed good performance.
 Conclusion. Information on the websites are well-managed, informative, efficient, and accessible. Universities in Indonesia may use several overseas university library websites as a reference.

Development of quality assessment tool for websites of the international aesthetic medicine societies

Abstract Online users often search public health websites to examine health-related issues, including diagnosis and symptomatic behaviours; however, the quality and reliability of health websites still pose significant challenges for medical societies. Thus, we conducted a quality check of international aesthetic medicine society (UIME) websites. All websites reporting health-related information should identify a specific organisation as the reporting authority, and the accuracy of their content must be verified. The analysis was conducted by considering 31 national societies, and a quality assessment was performed using a tailor-made questionnaire with three criteria: design (70 points), reliability (85 points) and privacy (15 points). According to the results, only two of the websites fulfil the threshold score of 130/170 (76.4%). Seven societies do not have responsive websites, and only five sites achieved ≥50 points for the design criterion. The American society websites met the reliability parameter and achieved ≥70 points, and 11 sites achieved a minimum score of 10 points for privacy. This study reveals that major health societies in public healthcare must be improved to meet user needs and catalyse positive change in the distribution of health information.

Exploring the role of progressive web applications in modern web development

This paper explores such a Web development technology as Progressive Web Applications. It is explained what this technology is and the purpose of it. The paper also compares progressive web applications to other Web technologies that are closely related to them, such as responsive websites and native applications. It highlights the most important differences and similarities between them. Furthermore, the paper discusses the advantages as well as the possible limitations of this technology. Finally, it provides some thoughts on whether or not this technology is the best solution for the online presence of a business.

Although building these resources in-house may seem too expensive, time-consuming, and require outsourcing, this paper showcases how it can be achieved on a small scale using existing staff, innovative funding resources, and affordable training.

Witryny i aplikacje mobilne w promocji gospodarstw agroturystycznych

Celem pracy była ocena możliwości oraz stopnia wykorzystania przez gospodarstwa agroturystyczne witryn i aplikacji mobilnych w prezentacji i promocji świadczonych usług. Badania przeprowadzono w trzech płaszczyznach: responsywności przekazu, projektowej oraz ekonomicznej. Badaniom responsywności poddano 287 witryn internetowych gospodarstw agroturystycznych. W trakcie testów projektowych utworzono aplikacje mobilne dla modelowego gospodarstwa agroturystycznego. Ekonomiczne uwarunkowania utworzenia aplikacji mobilnych zbadano rozsyłając zapytanie ofertowe. W zbiorze badanych witryn nie odnotowano ani jednej witryny mobilnej. Żadne z gospodarstw nie udostępniało też aplikacji mobilnej. Gospodarstwa agroturystyczne z badanego zbioru posługiwały się przeważnie witrynami responsywnymi. Pracownicy ankietowanych podmiotów unikali w swoich odpowiedziach tematu kosztów wykonania aplikacji mobilnej. Większość z nich zasugerowała, że z uwagi na kwestie praktyczne (efektywność) i ekonomiczne, korzystniej jest promować gospodarstwo przy pomocy witryny internetowej dostosowanej do urządzeń przenośnych. W konkluzji wykazano, że powszechność wykorzystania aplikacji mobilnych w promocji gospodarstw agroturystycznych jest ograniczana barierami: przydatności, kosztów, a także wiedzy i umiejętności.

Apps for academic success: Developing digital literacy and awareness to increase usage

As a consequence of the high adoption levels of mobile technology, users are increasingly accessing academic library-subscribed content via vendor-supplied mobile applications (apps) or responsive websites. However, users may be unaware of the existence of some standalone apps and might miss benefi tting from available apps at their most significant point of need. This paper outlines the McGill Library’s multifaceted approach to promotion and outreach to increase awareness and usage of mobile apps in an effort to provide additional access points for the library’s e-resources. A variety of online and traditional promotional methods were employed, such as faculty news e-bulletins, an app web-guide, images on the Library home page slideshow, and in-person demonstrations, to advertise two of the Library’s subscribed apps, PressReader and BrowZine. Complementing this approach, four different workshops were offered at different times during an academic year targeted to specific audiences: faculty, university communications and library staff, and students. The authors describe the content and results of these initiatives showing how specific promotional strategies appear to have a greater impact on usage. They conclude with thoughts on how current behaviours in mobile usage might begin to affect the future direction of mobile access to library-subscribed e-resources.

Evaluating Responsive Web Design's Impact on Blind Users

Recent studies show that websites complying with accessibility guidelines can still be ineffective, inefficient, and unpleasant. Compliance with accessibility guidelines does not guarantee blind users' satisfaction when accessing websites. Meanwhile, in recent years, websites have undergone radical changes regarding design, development, and construction. Responsive design is a new trend that has a strong impact on web design. To determine blind users' experience with responsive design, the authors performed empirical tests to investigate the impact of responsive design on the emotions of blind users during web interactions. They measured user emotions by applying the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) instrument. Results show that although the responsive websites investigated had acceptable levels of accessibility, they posed numerous usability barriers and triggered intense, negative user emotions. Furthermore, the average number of negative emotional reactions for blind users was higher in the case of responsive web design than in the case of nonresponsive web design.

Context preserving navigation redesign under Markovian assumption for responsive websites

Identification and sorting of contextually relevant links are important for navigation design of responsive websites. While average click ratio is often used as a metric to evaluate contextual relevance of navigation structure from users’ view, we propose a metric called implied deviation to quantify the same from designer point of view. Average click ratio minimization problem typically solved using meta-heuristics has issues such as loss of designer-defined contextual relevance and loss of connectivity among webpages. To solve this problem, we propose a deviation minimization framework to suggest context-preserving navigation structure. The proposed framework consists of three stages. Stage 1 models user navigation behavior as a Markov process and generates a transition probability matrix. Then we use the transition probabilities as weights to relax the original average click ratio minimization problem, and bring it to a form similar to a transportation model. The corresponding solution is considered as the initial basic feasible solution of the original problem. In Stage 2, transition probability guided meta-heuristics improve upon the initial basic feasible solution. Specifically, we use modified simulated annealing and ant colony optimization algorithms. This resulting solution is further weighted with transition probabilities to make a tradeoff in Stage 3. We obtained experimental results based on two education and university-related datasets to show that the proposed framework can achieve a good tradeoff for contextual relevance in terms of both the average click ratio and implied deviation.
