Evaluation of the TSL sector in Poland - 2004-2017

The article is an attempt to assess the condition of the TSL sector in Poland in 2004-2017. In the theoretical part of the work, the image and specification of the concept of the TSL sector was approximated and presented the position of Poland in the LPI Ranking - Performance Indicator of Logistics. In the practical part of the work an attempt was made to assess the condition of the TSL sector in 2004-2017 (in terms of average employment based on an employment relationship (thousand persons), average gross remuneration based on employment relationship (PLN), revenues from total activity ( PLN million), the costs of obtaining revenues from total activity (PLN milion)

Konsumenci wobec regionalnych produktów tradycyjnych w kontekście ogólnoświatowych zmian w zachowaniach konsumentów na rynku żywności

Zmiany w postawach i zachowaniach konsumentów znajdują odzwierciedlenie w dynamicznym rozwoju określonych kategorii produktów, wśród których ważną rolę odgrywają produkty tradycyjne, postrzegane przez nabywców jako zdrowe, smaczne, nawiązujące do lokalnej tradycji kulinarnej. Bogata oferta takich produktów znajduje się w woj. podkarpackim, zajmującym pierwszą pozycję w Polsce pod względem liczby zrejestrowanych produktów. W opracowaniu w oparciu o wyniki badań ankietowych przeprowadzonych w 2018 r. na próbie n = 221 wykazano, że bogata oferta produktów tradycyjnych regionu Podkarpacia cieszy się dużym zainteresowaniem konsumentów. W oparciu o wyniki testu Chi-kwadrat Pearsona można stwierdzić, że niezależnie od płci, wraz z wiekiem konsumentów zwiększa się zainteresowanie produktami tradycyjnymi, co znajduje odzwierciedlenie nie tylko w preferowaniu produktów tradycyjnych pochodzących z regionu, ale także w gotowości do zapłaty wyższej ceny w zamian na wysokie walory smakowe i zdrowotne tych produktów.

Polska w GATT/WTO

The purpose of the paper is to analyze the position of Poland in the GATT and WTO. Another topic concerns the principles of the Common Commercial Policy of the European Union, including Poland after accession. The first part of the paper presents the position of Poland in the GATT, with particular emphasis on Poland’s specific membership, which followed from its centrally planned economy. The second part of the paper concentrates on the issue of Poland’s functioning within the WTO and Polish postulates in the Development Round (Doha) of the WTO in the context of liberalized trade of agricultural commodities. The effects of excessive imports from China are also analyzed from the point of view of Polish producers of soft fruit and in terms of anti-dumping duties imposed by the EU on such imports.

POLISH POSITION IN THE PRODUCTION OF ENERGY FROM BIOMASS IN COMPARISON WITH OTHER COUNTRIES OF THE EUROPEAN UNION

The potential and position of Poland in comparison with other EU countries in the field of solid biomass production and the possibilities that flow with the use of this raw material for energy purposes are presented. To assess changes in the biomass market in EU countries, tabular, graphical and descriptive methods were used. Due to its geographical location and climatic conditions, Poland is developing the RES sector using its own resources, which gives it one of the leading positions in the EU. This has a significant impact on the difficulties that Poland is facing to achieve the EU’s 15% renewable energy share in final gross energy consumption.

Twisted Ways of Commodities in the Early Modern Era and the Positioning of Poland on the Map of Colonialism

This article discusses the position of Poland on the global map by focusing on the routes and impact of three selected ‘commodities’ that were transported to and from Poland in the early modern era, namely slaves, tobacco and silver coin. If studied in isolation, each of these ‘commodities’ assigns Poland a different role in the geography of the global market, work and know-how distribution. Only when studied together do they reveal the complex character of the relations between Central-Eastern Europe and its western and south-eastern neighbours, reaching as far as the New World and the Middle East.

POLISH POSITION ON THE WORLD MARKET OF APPLE JUICE CONCENTRATE

The aim of the research was to determine the position of Poland in the global trade of AJC and to identify trends in export and import of this product in 2005-2016. The importance of AJC export in the production of apples by the world’s largest exporters of this product was identified. Export of AJC was decreasing in the years 2005-2016. The average volume of export in 2014-2016 amounted to 1.4 million tons and was 20% lower than in 2005-2007. The largest exporters of AJC in terms of export volume in 2014-2016 were China (34%), Poland (20%) and Ukraine (7%). Among the largest exporters as compared to years 2005-2007 the countries with the decreased export volume in the years 2014-2016 were Germany (62%) China (39%) and Italy (25%) and the ones with increased were Ukraine (136%), Republic of Moldova (106%) and Poland (51%). In the years 2005-2016 export of AJC was the most important in the disposal of apple production in Moldova (62%), Hungary (51%), Poland (48%) and Ukraine (41%).

Looking for evidence of the middle-income trap. The case of Polish trade in high-tech goods with Germany

Research on the transition of post-communist economies has long been aimed at the identification of obstacles to growth. The idea behind this article relates to the paradigm of the middle-income trap and its characteristics. We adopt this conceptual framework because the economic position of Poland is determined by the nature of global value chains, its geographical proximity to Germany and the inflow of foreign direct investments which sustain cost and efficiency advantages and foster technological dependence. We embark on an analysis of trade in high-tech goods with a particular emphasis placed on Polish–German relations in the most significant sectors: machinery, electrical and electronic equipment. The results show tendencies typical for the middle-income trap, which has particular implications for the development of the semi-peripheral Polish economy.

Lemkos – the rediscovered nation

Abstract The article describes the basic problems of the Lemko community in Central Europe, with particular emphasis on the population living in Poland, its fate, history and contemporary position in Poland, recalling, among other things, the activities of associations (the Association of Lemkos, the Union of Lemkos, organization of Watra). The author presented literature by analyzing the content of Marek Koprowski’s book.

Polexit w polskim dyskursie publicznym

The aim of the article is the linguistic-discursive analysis of the polexit lexeme. The analysis includes: collocations of the word and their meanings, metaphorical uses and their cognitive-axiological properties, conceptualization of the notion depending on the sender’s category, the recipient’s category and the interpretation frameworks. The following search engines were used to create the database: moncofrazeo.pl (search engine and corpus of texts), dorzeczy.pl and polityka.pl (search engine and base of texts of two Polish opinion-forming magazines). The frequency of the polexit lexeme is correlated with specific political events. Since March 2017, the lexeme has become a discursive construct with a propaganda function and is used in texts about the position of Poland in the EU. It is conceptualized, depending on the ideology and discursive function of the sender, as: a threat, absurd, opportunity, desired state.

SYNTHETIC EVALUATION OF THE POLISH DISTANCE FROM THE COUNTRIES OF THE EUROPEAN UNION ON THE BASIS OF SELECTED INDICATORS OF THE HEALTHCARE SYSTEM

Rapid development of technology, increase in living standards and demographic changes contribute to dynamic changes taking place in contemporary society. Specialists in the field of demography, pay special attention to the phenomenon of "aging society". It can therefore be assumed that in the future the demand for medical services provided by doctors specializing in treating older people will increase. The main objective of this study was to assess Poland's position against the background of the European Union countries based on selected indicators characterizing the health care system. The research attempted to answer the following questions: did the position of Poland in the aspect of the state of health care significantly change over the 10 years studied and are the countries of the European Union similar in terms of the state of health care development, and if so which typological groups are divided into? The subjects of the study were all European Union countries, and the research period was 2005 and 2015.

Clean Coal Technologies – a chance for Poland’s energy security. Decision-making using AHP with Benefits, Opportunities, Costs and Risk Analysis

AbstractThe comprehensive use of available domestic energy resources, mainly coal and lignite, is the basis for the development of Poland’s economy and energy security due to the country’s large resource base. The implementation of clean coal technologies (CCT) is a necessary condition for maintaining coal’s leading position in Poland. Coal gasification technologies are seen as potentially attractive for the Polish economy, both for the chemical sector as well as for the mining sector. Working on the commercial implementation of coal gasification technologies, which ensures the effective substitution of scarce hydrocarbon fuels, will be a challenge to Polish industrial policy and support for CCT. This paper presents an analysis of coal gasification technologies using the decision support procedures, BOCR and SWOT analyses. These procedures helped determine the ranking of technologies and the types of development strategies plausible for the analysed technological variants. Taking into consideration the conditions of the Polish economy, the highest-ranking technologies included those aimed towards the production of methanol with the geological sequestration of carbon dioxide (CCS). In the case of underground coal gasification, it was found that the technology is not yet ready for implementation on a commercial scale and investment is subject to very high risk.

Since the economic transition Poland has faced many changes. Accession to the European Union improved the Polish economy and made it more attractive for foreign investments. Since 2004 Poland has been one of the major destinations of FDI in East and Central Europe Countries. Also during the global economic crisis Poland was a good location for foreign capital. The main aim of this article is an attempt to assess whether Poland is still attractive for the location of foreign direct investment. This article is a preliminary study. It is based on statistical analysis describing changes in foreign capital flows in Poland and its position in relation to other European Union countries. Results show that the position of Poland on the map of foreign investment has dramatically changed.

Which Clouds Have Silver Linings? Fixed-Term Employment, Psychological Distress, and Occupational Position in Poland

In recent years, many studies have attempted to assess the relationship between contractual status and a range of well-being outcomes, including self-reported health status or psychological distress. These studies have generally failed to establish a conclusive, straightforward link between working on a fixed-term contract and subjective quality of life. In light of these results, further attention needs to be paid to the heterogeneity of temporary jobs in terms of working conditions and the career prospects they offer. This article examines the occupational differences in the effects of fixed-term employment on the psychological condition of workers, bringing together two separate lines of research: on the psychological consequences of fixed-term employment and the structural and institutional determinants of the wage effects and career consequences of temporary jobs. The analyses are based on data from the past two waves of the Polish Panel Survey POLPAN, 2008 and 2013. POLPAN is the only Polish survey that includes detailed information on the type of employment contract, as well as multidimensional indicators of mental health (components of the Nottingham Health Profile). The mixed empirical results give rise to important insights into the complex links between employment flexibility and occupational inequalities on the Polish labor market.

Zmiany wydajności pracy i kosztów pracy w Polsce a konkurencyjność gospodarki Polski

The study investigates changes in productivity and labour costs in the light of their potential impact on Poland’s competitive position in the years 2004–2012. It addresses the following questions: (a) what was the rate of change in labour productivity in Poland in real terms? (b) what was the rate of change in unit labour costs in real terms? (c) were real changes in labour productivity at least as high as the growth rate of unit labour cost? (This would raise the attractiveness of the Polish economy to foreign investors looking to locate production plants), and (d) how do the changes in labour productivity and labour costs in Poland relate to other world economies and what is the position of Poland in this regard in the international arena? With the international comparisons, special emphasis has been placed on Poland relative to the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary as countries with a similar level of economic development and a similar business environment, though Poland was also compared to other countries.As is clear from the research, labour productivity growth in Poland was higher than the increase in unit labour costs, which should have a positive impact on the country’s competitive position. Furthermore Poland is no longer among the countries with the lowest salaries, which means that the current competitiveness is not based solely on cheap labour but on a combination of low labour costs and relatively high labour productivity.

This paper is devoted to the presentation of the significance of the historicaldivisions in Europe for the formation of the socio-economic conditions for thedevelopment of the banking sector in Poland. The paper presents four main divisionsrelated to the functioning of the Roman Empire and Barbaricum, Latin andByzantine Europe, the dualism of the economic development of Europe fromthe sixteenth century and the creation of the capitalist and socialist blocks afterthe Second World War, and their relations to the position of Poland. Historicaloverview is juxtaposed with the current shape of the Polish banking sector, andespecially the dominance of banks controlled by foreign capital. This confrontationis primarily intended to indicate the importance of cultural factors for thedevelopment of the banking sector.

Poland: A Dark Side of Church Cultural Policy

Abstract The cultural policy of the Roman Catholic Church in Poland is incorporated into state-run cultural policies. The organs of public authority enforce the objectives of Church regardless of Church’s actual ability to influence the society. It should be pointed out that the secularization of religion in Poland is frequently misinterpreted and usually equated with its deprivatization. It is worth mentioning that Catholicism is the dominant religion of the country and the Roman Catholic Church has hold a special position in Poland and play a major role in the country’s social and political life. In practice, however, Polish society appears to be religiously indifferent. This paper proves that the official, state-run cultural policy in Poland is based on favoritism of the Roman Catholic Church, regardless of Church’s actual ability to wield influence on society. Thus, there is a variety of implicit and explicit cultural policies implemented by the authorities to support Church. This work also aims at addressing the question of social attitudes to women, especially the one concerning the UN and EU law embracing women’s rights, until recently still not implemented in Poland. This paper further explores some peculiarities of this topic as an example of a specific outcome of Church cultural policy and its impact on both the past and present-day society.

The Use of Methods of Multidimensional Comparative Analysis in Evaluation of the Standard of Living of Poland’s Population in Comparison with Other Countries of the European Union

The comparative analysis of the standard of living of the population is significant from the viewpoint of evaluation of economic changes as well as determination of the distance between countries with regard to social development. The goal of the article was to compare, using the methods of multidimensional comparative analysis (MCA), the standard of living in the countries of the European Union using a single indicator. This indicator, as an aggregated value, synthesizes the information from all variables defining a complex phenomenon, enabling a comparison of countries with regard to the standard of living. The point of departure for the research was a creation of a set of variables, divided into 8 subgroups: health care, labour market, salaries, housing conditions, education, culture and recreation, communication, environmental protection, and social benefits. On the basis of this group of variables, a comparison of the European Union countries between 2006 and 2011 was made, specifying the position of Poland, with regard to the standard of living of inhabitants and evaluation of the extent of Poland’s similarity to other EU countries. The source base of the articles was information from secondary sources: Internet sites, publications on European statistics, as well as data published by the GUS (Central Statistical Office of Poland).
