Association between Parenting Style and Language Development in Children

Parenting style plays important role in the development of the children from birth to five years of age including language development as well. Hence, parents can play important role in the development of their children because their quality of time matters. Objective: To determine the association between parenting style and language development and to identify the type of parenting style mostly use by the parents. Methods: This cross-sectional study, with a sample of n=384 parents, was conducted at Riphah International University, Islamabad from 1st August, 2022 to 31st January, 2023. Parents of typical children of both genders, aged birth to 36 months were included. Basic demographical sheet, Parenting style questionnaire and Receptive Expressive Emergent Language (REEL)3rd edition were used for data collection. SPSS version 21.0 was used for data analysis. Point-Biserial Correlation was used to determine correlation between the parenting style and language development and p<0.05 was considered significant. Results: Results indicate significant (p<0.001) relationship between parenting style and language development of children. The correlation of parenting style was low with receptive language but high with expressive language. The results also indicate that parents used different parenting styles with majority 225(58.6%) using authoritative parenting style and least 12(3.1%) used permissive parenting style. Conclusions: Study concludes that parenting styles have great impact on language development of children. Different types of parenting style are being used among which authoritative parenting style is the most and permissive being the least common.

Permissive Parenting, Self Regulation and Risk-Taking Behavior among Adolescents

The purpose of this study was to find out the relationship among permissive parenting, self-regulation and risk-taking behaviour among adolescents. Parents displaying a permissive parenting style often let their adolescents choose what to do. Due to the lack of boundaries and rules set under permissive parenting, adolescents may view their parents as more of a friend or an equal rather than a person of authority and this leads to poor self-regulation abilities among adolescents. A stratified random sampling technique was used in this study. 180 College students from the public and private colleges of Toba Tek Singh between the age range 12-18 were included in the study. PAQ developed by Buri (1991), ASRI developed by K.L (2007) Moilanen and RTSHIA by Vrouva (2010) were used. The Pearson correlation coefficient and regression analysis were used to examine correlation and the predictive relationship among the variables under investigation. The results of this study showed that there is a significant correlation between permissive parenting and self-regulation among adolescents. Permissive parenting strongly predicts self-regulation among adolescents.

The Evaluation of Parenting Styles of Children with Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder

Background: Parenting has an important role in improving the performance of children with ADHD and in their families, this study will create awareness about parenting styles among parents addressing differences in parenting styles and improving the quality of child mental health.
 Objective: This study was intended to evaluate the different parenting styles of parents having children with ADHD and healthy children. It also aimed to find out any relationship between the socio-demographic variables of children and parents with the parenting style of the diseased child. 
 Methodology: This was a case-control study. The study was conducted in the Department of Psychiatry, Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College, Sylhet during the period from September 2020 to August 2022. ADHD was diagnosed using DSM-5 and confirmed by a consultant psychiatrist. A total of 60 parents of children (ADHD=30, Healthy=30) were interviewed who fulfilled the enrollment criteria. Semi-structured questionnaire for socio-demographic variables and a Bangla Parenting Style and Dimension Questionnaire (PSDQ) were used for assessing parenting style. The data analysis was conducted utilizing the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) method, followed by post-hoc comparisons using the Bonferroni correction.
 Results: The predominant parenting style found to be applied to children with ADHD was authoritative (56.67%), followed by 26.67% authoritarian parenting and 16.33% permissive parenting style. Among the parents of healthy children, 53.33% were authoritative, 23.33% were authoritarian and permissive. There was a statistically significant association of parenting styles with education level and occupation. ADHD children's parents who studied up to the primary level had a significantly higher authoritarian score and (authoritarian p = 0.005) and the normal children's parents who studied up to the secondary level had a significantly higher authoritarian score (authoritarian p = 0.007. A significant association was found in the authoritarian domain in parents who were housewives (p = 0.032). Individuals within 6-9 years age range exhibit significantly higher scores in the authoritative domain (p=.001). Both boys and girls groups exhibit a considerably higher score in the authoritative domain (p=.003, p=.001). 
 Conclusion: The fact that parenting styles influence ADHD may appear to be a burden, but it can also be an opportunity to change one's life. Solutions like parent training programs can provide skills and strategies as well as help build resilience in parents to manage the challenging behavior of children with ADHD.

Characteristics of Adolescents and Parenting Style of Bullying Behavior

Background: Bullying occurs more frequently which is detrimental to adolescent development. Aim: Examining the relationship between demo data, parental interactions, and parenting practices as potential contributors to adolescent bullying behavior. Methods: A cross-sectional study methodology was used. The research population is teenagers who attend junior and senior high schools in Surabaya. Based on re-sampling for research, the research sample consisted of 1855 teenagers. One month duration. bullying behavior is the dependent variable, while demographic traits, parental interactions, and parenting philosophy are the independent variables. Teenagers completed the questionnaire using the Google form and questionnaire sheet, which is the method used to collect data. The chi-square test for adolescent traits and Spearman's rank correlation of = 0.05 were used in the statistical analysis. Results: Bullying behavior was found to be correlated with adolescent characteristics, especially age (P=0.003). Only permissive parenting style had a positive correlation (p=0.036, r=0.094) with intimidation, while authoritarian and permissive parenting styles had a negative correlation (p=0.000, r=0.131) with intimidation. Conclusion: Teenagers are involved in bullying behavior, both as victims and perpetrators. Be young. There is a high probability that parenting philosophies that are too strict or too permissive will result in bullying behavior. To reduce the possibility of bullying among adolescents, parents are expected to apply authoritative parenting.

Parenting Style and Its Correlates: Perceived among School Going Adolescents

Parents and parenting style have an effect on children’s upbringing. Children learn parenting style from their own parents and modifications are adopted by imitating their own parents. Therefore, parenting styles need to be conducive, encouraging, with minimum control over children. With this background, the present study proposes objectives to find out the perceived parenting style among students in the higher secondary school and to examine the relationship between the variables like authoritative and authoritarian parenting styles. Parenting style constitutes three main types such as authoritarian, authoritative and permissive style of parenting. But for the present study, the researchers have adopted two types of parenting styles, such as authoritative and authoritarian parenting styles. To test the variables, the researcher had selected a school in Kerala, interviewed around 121 respondents studying in high secondary school. The findings showed that there is no significant difference between authoritative and authoritarian parenting styles with the gender. But the mean and standard deviation scores reveal that most of the children felt their parenting style was authoritative rather than authoritarian.

Parenting Styles and Mental Health among Adolescents of Nawabshah (SBA), SINDH

Background: Parenting styles are crucial in shaping adolescents' mental health. With varying implications for child development, the authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive parenting styles identified by Baumrind have been subjects of extensive research. The interplay between these parenting approaches and adolescent mental health outcomes remains a pivotal area of inquiry, especially in diverse cultural contexts such as Nawabshah (SBA), Sindh. Objective: This study aimed to identify the predominant parenting styles in SBA and to assess their relationship with the mental health of school-going adolescents. Specifically, it sought to explore the association between authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive parenting styles and the prevalence of depressive symptoms among adolescents. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 354 adolescents from both government and private secondary and higher secondary schools in Nawabshah. Participants were selected using non-probability convenience sampling. Data were collected via a survey incorporating the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) for assessing mental health and the Parent Authority Questionnaire (PAQ) for evaluating parenting styles. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 25, employing the Pearson correlation coefficient to analyze the relationship between parenting styles and adolescent mental health. Results: The study found a predominance of the authoritative parenting style among participants' parents (56.2%). A significant yet low negative correlation was identified between authoritative parenting and moderate depression in adolescents (r = -.124, p < 0.05). Additionally, combinations of parenting styles were observed, with a notable presence of mixed authoritative-authoritarian practices. Adolescents experiencing authoritative parenting reported higher instances of moderate depression compared to those with other parenting styles. Conclusion: The findings challenge the universally positive portrayal of authoritative parenting, highlighting its complex relationship with adolescent mental health in the SBA context. The study underscores the need for a nuanced understanding of parenting styles and their impact, advocating for culturally sensitive approaches in parenting research.

Relationship between Parenting Style and High School Students’ Anxious Thoughts: A Case Study in Iran

Parenting styles are variables that affect their children’s anxious thoughts. The present study aimed to examine the relationship between parenting styles with anxious thoughts of the students in selected high schools of Mashhad, Iran. A quantitative methodology in form of a correlational design was employed in this research, which comprised two main variables including parenting styles and Iranian teenagers’ anxious thoughts. To address the research objective, 180 teenagers who were students at some schools in Mashhad, Iran, and their parents, completed the study questionnaires which included Baumarind parenting styles Scale (1971) and the Anxious Thoughts Inventory (AnTI) designed by Wells (1994). The analysis of the data obtained from implementing the questionnaires was performed through SPSS25 software in two sections: descriptive and inferential (Pearson Correlation Coefficient and regression analysis, i.e. ANOVA). The results showed that there was a significant relationship between anxious thoughts and the three parenting styles. Also, the relationship between the authoritarian parenting style and the symptoms of anxious thoughts (r = -0.731) is significant in a negative way. On the other hand, it is observed that there is a positive correlation between authoritarian parenting style and anxious thoughts (r = 0.511). Finally, it is seen that there is a positive correlation between permissive parenting style and anxious thoughts (0.461), (p</01). It can be concluded that parenting styles can strongly predict anxious thoughts and determine 0.544 of variances of the anxious thoughts.

PARENTING STYLES AS CORRELATES OF TEENAGE PREGNANCY AMONG ADOLESCENTS IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ENUGU STATE, NIGERIA

The study investigated parenting styles as a correlates of teenage pregnancy among adolescents in public secondary schools in Enugu State. Four research questions guided the study and four null hypotheses were tested at a .05 level of significance. The correlation research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised 9,974 senior secondary school two (SS II) female adolescent students, in the 292 public secondary schools in Enugu State. A sample of 996 female adolescent students was drawn for the study through a multi-stage sampling technique. Structured questionnaires titled Parenting Styles Questionnaire (PSQ) and Teenage Pregnancy Questionnaire (TPQ) were used for data collection. The instrument was face and construct validated by three experts; while the construct validation was ascertained using the Varimax Rotation Method. Internal consistency coefficients of 0.89, 0.91, 0.90, and 0.86; 0.92, and 0.89; were obtained for PSQ and TPQ respectively, using Cronbach Alpha statistical method. Pearson Product Moment Correlation Co-efficient, simple linear regression, and multiple linear regression statistics were utilized for data analysis. The p-value was used to determine the significant difference at a .05 level of significance for all hypotheses. The findings of the study revealed that there was a low positive significant relationship between authoritative parenting style and teenage pregnancy. The result also showed that there was a high positive significant relationship between authoritarian parenting style and teenage pregnancy. It was equally found that there was a highly positive significant relationship between permissive parenting style and teenage pregnancy. Finally, the result indicated that there was a very high positive significant relationship between neglectful parenting style and teenage pregnancy. Based on the findings, the study recommended among others that the school management and parents should ensure that the home and school environment are well protected to shield the children from exposure to negative influences, by being concerned about the well-being of the girl child through education about sex, sexuality and the danger inherent. Social welfare agencies (public and private) should re-double their efforts in educating, counselling, and rehabilitation of victims of teenage pregnancy.<p> </p><p><strong> Article visualizations:</strong></p><p><img src="/-counters-/lit/0758/a.php" alt="Hit counter" /></p>

Parenting Patterns' Impact on the Likelihood of Mental Disorders in Palembang, Indonesia

Introduction: Parenting style has a crucial role in shaping a child's physical and mental growth. The objective of this study is to assess the impact of parenting styles on the likelihood of developing mental problems in the urban area of Palembang, Indonesia.
 Methods: This study employed a cross-sectional research methodology, encompassing a sample of 1,000 participants aged between 18 and 65 years. We categorized the participants based on the type of parenting style they experienced, namely authoritative, permissive, and authoritarian parenting. We used the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10) questionnaire to assess the likelihood of mental illnesses.
 Results: The study found that individuals raised with an authoritative parenting style had a lower vulnerability to mental problems compared to those raised with either a permissive or authoritarian parenting style.
 Conclusion: The practice of authoritative parenting can serve as a safeguard against susceptibility to mental diseases.

The Moderating Role of Marital Adjustment in Relationship Between Perceived Maternal Parenting Styles and Family Functioning among Fathers

The present study investigated the moderating role of marital adjustment in the relationship between perceived maternal parenting styles and the family functioning of fathers. It was qualitative cross-sectional research comprised of fathers (N = 200). The measures used in exploring the relationship were the Parental Authority Questionnaire (Buri, 1991), the Family ICPS Scale (Intimacy, Conflict, and Parenting Styles) developed by Noller. et. al, 1992, and the Revised Dyadic Adjustment Scale (Crane, Bean, & Middleton, 2000). Following the analysis, correlation, t-test, ANOVA, and regression (through Hayes Process Macro) was run. The results emphasize the importance of marital adjustment and the marital relationship’s quality influencing the effects of maternal parenting styles on family functioning and it acknowledges that perceptions play a crucial role in shaping family dynamics. It was found that with high marital adjustment, permissive and authoritative parenting styles influence the dynamics of family functioning, and with low marital adjustment, authoritarian parenting styles influence family functioning. The results provide insights into the dynamics of fatherhood within the context of Pakistani families, shedding light on the important factors that influence paternal experiences and overall family well-being. Further research and interventions in this area can potentially enhance family relationships and explore additional variables, such as children’s involvement, cultural norms, and societal expectations, to deepen the understanding of the complex dynamics within families.

The temporal stability of maternal parenting style and child feeding practices: A six-wave longitudinal study

Although parenting styles and child feeding practices are conceptualized as distal, static predictors of child eating and weight outcomes, few studies have examined the temporal stability (i.e., change over time) of these parenting measures. Also, parental characteristics, such as mental health or socio-demographics, may make it more or less difficult to sustain consistent parenting behavior. This study examined the temporal stability of parenting styles and child feeding practices and the association between temporal stability indices with maternal sociodemographic and mental health characteristics. The analytic sample included 161 ethnically diverse mothers enrolled in a six-wave bi-annual longitudinal study. During each wave, mothers reported on their parenting styles and child feeding practices using validated self-report questionnaires. Temporal stability indices for parenting styles were moderate for authoritative (ICC = 0.57) and authoritarian (ICC = 0.70) styles, yet high for permissive (ICC = 0.78) styles. Temporal stability scores for child feeding practices were low for discipline (ICC = 0.33), limit setting (ICC = 0.33), monitoring (ICC = 0.36), and pressure to eat (ICC = 0.34); however, restriction (ICC = 0.53) and role modeling of healthy eating were moderate (ICC = 0.73). Greater income and education status were positively associated with stability in authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive parenting styles, as well as with limit setting, monitoring, role modeling of healthy eating, and pressure to eat feeding practices. Higher anxiety and depressive symptoms and lower self-esteem were negatively associated with permissive parenting styles and role modeling of healthy eating. Findings show that maternal parenting styles and child feeding practices fluctuate over time, and sociodemographic and mental health characteristics are related to stability of some of these parenting styles and behaviors.

Milenial Parents' Parenting Patterns are in Danger Use of Early Children's Gadgets

Parenting influences early childhood gadget use. This study aims to analyze the parenting style of millennial parents regarding the dangers of using early childhood gadgets in the Tunggulrejo Village, Gabus District, Grobogan Regency. This research was conducted using observation, interviews, and documentation of five research subjects for the data collection process. The method of data analysis is carried out directly based on the results of field work, namely data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of this study indicate that children with this parenting style become independent and have good creativity, permissive parenting style gives freedom to children without reprimands and punishments, even though children make mistakes. In this study, the parenting style that is mostly applied by millennial parents in using gadgets for children aged 3-6 years in the Tunggulrejo Village tends to use permissive parenting. The negative impacts of using early childhood gadgets in Tunggulrejo Village are eye health problems, children get angry easily, children prefer to be alone, and children are more lazy in doing things. This research is expected to be useful in developing knowledge in the field of education, especially in terms of early childhood care. Furthermore, this research is expected to be the basis of reference for further studies that have related topics.

Parenting Styles, Self-Efficacy and Pornography Addiction: A Correlation Study Among Malaysian Higher Private Educational Institution Students

Parenting styles are essential to meeting children's developmental needs, enhancing their overall life quality, and ensuring they grow up as responsible and competent adults. Pornography addiction has been examined in numerous studies in relation to parenting styles (authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive); however, there is little information available on Malaysian students attending private universities. The current study analysed the correlation between parenting style, self-efficacy, and pornography addiction among 295 private university students. Students were asked to respond to self-administered online questionnaires. The instruments adopted in this study include the Pornography Addiction Screening Tool, the General Self-Efficacy Scale, and the Parental Authority Questionnaire. The findings showed that there are significant relationships between parenting styles, self-efficacy, and pornography addiction. Further analysis of Spearman’s correlation found positive and statistically significant relationships between both fathers’ and mothers’ authoritarian and permissive parenting styles and pornography addiction. The correlation between both fathers’ and mothers’ authoritative parenting styles and pornography addiction was negligible and statistically insignificant. The relationship between fathers’ parenting styles and pornography addiction was weaker compared to mothers’. Self-efficacy had a significant and positive correlation with pornography addiction. This study suggests that parenting styles and self-efficacy are crucial criteria for early psychological growth, with self-efficacy increasing students’ confidence to strive in chosen activities and resist destructive behaviours. Implications for university educators and counsellors, academicians, community leaders, and lawmakers are highlighted to help overcome the growing addiction to pornography among Malaysian youths, particularly at the university level.

PENGARUH POLA ASUH ORANG TUA PERMISIF TERHADAP KECANDUAN PERMAINAN DARING YANG DIMEDIASI OLEH KESEJAHTERAAN PSIKOLOGIS

Online game addiction among adolescents is currently a major concern for parents in Indonesia. The parenting style implemented by parents can be one of the factors that trigger online game addiction in adolescents, one of which is the permissive parenting style. The main aim of this study is to investigate the effect of permissive parenting style on online game addiction mediated by psychological well-being, referring to the I-PACE theory. The quantitative method was employed in the study and respondents were selected using the purposive sampling technique. Participants in this study were adolescents aged 16-20 years throughout Indonesia who were collected by distributing questionnaires via social media. Data were collected from 269 respondents who were analyzed using the mediation model regression technique by Hayes with PROCESS software on the IBM SPSS version 25 for Windows application. The results of this study indicated that psychological well-being did not significantly mediate the effect of a permissive parenting style on online game addiction. However, psychological well-being significantly predicted online game addiction directly. Meanwhile, a permissive parenting style significantly predicted online game addiction. Permissive parenting style also significantly predicted psychological well-being. The permissive parenting style of fathers has a stronger effect on online gaming addiction.

Parenting styles and personal belief in a just world among Chinese children and adolescents: gender, living location, and age as moderators.

The positive development of the personal belief in a just world (PBJW) plays a vital role in academic achievement and mental health among children and adolescents. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the influencing factors of PBJW better. The association between parenting styles and PBJW has been well established, but whether this association varies among different groups remains an open issue. The present study aimed to examine the strength of the associations between parenting styles and PBJW among Chinese children and adolescents and the role of certain moderators (gender, living location, and age) in these associations. This study employed hierarchical regression and simple slopes analyses to examine data from the National Children's Study of China. The database includes 24,013 Chinese children and adolescents in grades 49 (M = 12.76 years, SD = 1.73), with 53.50% boys. The results indicated that (1) authoritative parenting was positively correlated with PBJW; (2) both authoritarian and permissive parenting styles were negatively correlated with PBJW; (3) the positive relationship between authoritative parenting and PBJW was more prominent in urban regions; the negative relationship between authoritarian and PBJW was stronger in urban regions; and the negative relationship between permissive parenting and PBJW was more pronounced among girls and older children and adolescents. These findings highlight important associations between parenting styles and the development of PBJW among Chinese children and adolescents, and suggest strategies for policy-makers, educators, and parents to improve PBJW for different types of Chinese children and adolescents.

Predicting Children's Behavioral Disorders Based on Mothers' Parenting Styles with the Mediation of Children's Attachment Styles

Purpose: The prevalence of behavioral disorders in children is significant and is associated with mothers' parenting styles and attachment styles. The present study aimed to predict children's behavioral disorders based on mothers' parenting styles with the mediation of children's attachment styles in the city of Isfahan. Materials and Methods: The research method is descriptive-correlational. The research population included all children aged 8 to 11 years in the city of Isfahan in 2023, from whom 310 were selected as a sample through convenience sampling. The research tools included the Baumrind Parenting Styles Questionnaire (1991), the Kappenberg et al. Attachment Styles Questionnaire (2006), and the Rutter Behavioral Problems Questionnaire (1975). Findings: The findings showed that the path coefficients for the permissive parenting style were β = 0.26, for the authoritarian style β = 0.38, and for the authoritative style β = -0.14, all significant at P ≤ 0.05. The path coefficient for attachment styles to behavioral disorders was also β = 0.47, significant at P ≤ 0.05. Conclusion: Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that children's behavioral disorders can be predicted by mothers' parenting styles and attachment styles.

Unravelling the impact of Perceived Parental Styles on Curiosity and Exploration

This study was aimed at investigating the role of perceived parenting styles in predicting curiosity and exploration among university students. It is obvious that personality, behavioral and cognitive characteristics of human are affected by parents and it seems that parenting styles that parents use in rearing their children affect their personality and cognitive characteristics. Data were collected from Bahauddin Zakariya University Multan, Pakistan. Sample of 171 students were selected through convenient sampling. Two research instruments were used to measure the variables. Findings of the study reveal that permissive and authoritative parenting styles are the significant positive predictors of curiosity and exploration among students. Moreover, there is positive correlation among these constructs. Furthermore, results indicate that there is no significant impact of authoritarian parental style in predicting curiosity and exploration. In addition, there was no statistically significant difference of curiosity and exploration between male and female students. In the light of study, parents need to practice the health parenting styles to nourish their children.

Comparing parenting styles: their influence on adolescent’s internet addiction

Excessive internet use in adolescents can lead to addiction, with parental parenting styles playing a pivotal role. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between parents' parenting style and adolescent internet addiction. A cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 290 participants using convenience sampling. Two instruments, the Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ) and Internet Addiction Test (IAT), were employed for data collection. Statistical analysis, using the Spearman correlation test (p < 0.05), was performed. Findings revealed a significant relationship (p < 0.001, r = 0.253) between an authoritarian paternal parenting style and adolescent internet addiction. A permissive maternal parenting style also exhibited a significant link (p < 0.001, r = 0.319) with internet addiction. This study highlights a clear association between parenting styles and adolescent internet addiction. Parents should balance granting freedom for responsible internet use with setting boundaries, engage in open dialogues, and issue warnings when excessive online time is detected to effectively address this issue.

Preschoolers and anxiety: The effect of parental characteristics.

Anxiety is a common phenomenon among children that can lead to adverse developmental outcomes. A challenging parent-child relationship and its characteristics may negatively impact the development of a child's internalizing problems. However, theoretical models on children's anxiety have not fully emphasized the contribution of parenting and environmental factors. Therefore, the aim of this study is to explore the possible correlations between parenting styles and other parental characteristics with children's anxiety. The sample consisted of 443 parents of preschool children who completed the Parenting Styles and Dimension Questionnaire and the Child Behavior Checklist 1.5-5. The univariate analysis included differences between demographic groups, assessed with independent sample t-tests. Associations between demographic evidence and child anxiety were estimated using χ2 tests. Binomial logistic regression analysis assessed the most important parenting characteristics contributing to a child's anxiety. A total of 24.6% of the children had borderline or clinical symptoms of anxiety. Parents whose children were anxious were more permissive than parents of nonanxious children (p < 0.001). Mothers were more authoritative compared to fathers. In addition, permissive parenting style increased the probability of a child's anxiety and maternal permissive style emerged as a significant predictor of anxiety in preschoolers (p < 0.003). This study revealed that the permissive parenting style is associated with anxiety in preschool children. Furthermore, the maternal permissive style was identified as a predictor of anxiety. Future research may address its causal effect on anxiety and other behavioral problems, focusing on multiple perspective relationships and cultural dimensions.

The influence of perceived parenting styles on Korean children's delinquent behaviors when accounting for gender differences

AbstractParenting styles studies which used US data have shown positive effects of authoritative parenting styles and negative effects of permissive and authoritarian parenting styles on the adolescents' behavioral development. The effects of parenting styles were predictive within the juvenile population of the United States. The current study introduces questions about the influence of culture and gender on the association between parenting styles and children's delinquent behaviors. It focuses on South Korean culture, which is influenced by Confucian philosophy emphasizing obeying parents and importance of the role of the son in the family. This study uses ordinary least squares regression to examine data from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2010 collected by the National Youth Policy Institute from 2010 to 2016. Results indicated that male South Korean children respond positively to the authoritarian parenting style, but parenting style does not influence female South Korean children, at least when it comes to delinquency. These results indicate that culture and gender influence the association between parenting style and delinquency among children and broaden the applicability of parenting style research.
