PENGARUH BAHASA ROJAK DI MEDIA BAHARU TERHADAP BAHASA KEBANGSAAN

‘Bahasa Jiwa Bangsa’and ‘Bahasa Menunjukkan Bangsa’ is a Malay proverb to cultivate holdings and identity among Malaysian. This Malay proverb is often broadcast in electronic media or in print media. This campaign emphasizes that language is the cornerstone of race. An effort to uphold the National Language requires strong support and commitment from the community, especially in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) era. However, in the habit of using new media, they often use the mixed language every day. Mixed language is due to the attitude of some people who are not aware that the use of national language is become more eroded by the use of mixed language. The purpose of this research is to study the influence of mixed language in the new media in the National Language. This study uses a qualitative study method where the data is obtained through interview. A total of 5 informants were involved in the study consisting of New Media Communication student, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP)

Effect of Roadways Plantation on Signal Propagation Analysis in Connected Autonomous Vehicle Communication

At present, the development of autonomous vehicle has altered the outlook of modern transportation worldwide. The state-of-the-art vehicular communication for transportation system is advancing, especially in vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) communication. An effective communication between vehicle and infrastructure has become a significant part of autonomous transportation criteria. The necessity for high quality of service communication inspire for good planning and preparation in communication process. Per se, this paper proposes vegetation attenuation models for advance planning of communication process between vehicle to infrastructure, defined mainly by plants, trees and vegetation along the roadways in Malaysia. The channel measurement performed in Universiti Malaysia Perlis test-bed having large tall trees and low shrubs along the routes resulted in several interesting results which would shape the planning of CAV communication. It is observed that communication close to low plantation or shrub requires high power consumption as the range is significantly reduced. It is also learned that certain types of plantations allows for different level of signal attenuation depending on the antenna heights. The research also found out that the attenuation profile follows strictly the log normal distribution and as such certain planning could be made to reshape the communication process to cater for this.

PrefaceThe 1st International Conference on Mechanical Electronic and Biosystem Engineering (MEBSE 2018) was held on 15-16 December 2018 in Bogor, Indonesia, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Indonesia. MEBSE 2018 was organized by Malaysian Society of Instrumentation and Control Technology (MSICT), School of Mechatronic Engineering, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), and Technopreneur At UniMAP Sdn. Bhd (TUSB).The MEBSE 2018 aims to provide a platform for participants from the diverse field of Mechanical, Mechatronics and Biosystem Engineering backgrounds to exchange ideas and findings to promote cooperation, networking as well as knowledge sharing in both engineering practice and research in higher education. The conference includes the fields of Mechatronics, Ergonomics and Biomedical Engineering, Fluid Thermal and Energy Conversion, Postharvest, Food and Biosystem Engineering, Network, Data and Automation, Non-Destructive Evaluation and Remote Sensing. The conference received more than 100 papers from Malaysia, Indonesia and other countries over the world. After a rigorous peer-review process, 89 papers were accepted. The accepted papers that focused on theory, applications, design and experimental studies relevant to mechanical, mechatronics, and biosystem engineering field were invited to present in this conference.I wish to record my gratitude to all reviewers, both local and international, for their time and effort in reviewing the papers. Pre-drilling and self-drilling pins screw-bone fixation stress interaction analysis induced by uniaxial compression loading

A newly designed Uniaxial external fixator which functions as a universal fixator in the application of all types of bone fractures is recently introduced by both Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM) and Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP). The Investigation is focused on identifying and measuring the performance in terms of strength or weakness of the fixator that is needed before the application to the human body. Hence, this research was conducted to determine the performance of Uniaxial external fixator which was based on geometry using different screw drilling techniques applied during an angled uniaxial compression load. A three-dimensional fixator-bone was constructed using different screw inserting techniques which was then converted into ANSYS v14.5 for the purposes of conducting a finite element analysis (FEA). Axial compressive loading with various degrees from 60 to 6300 N were applied to bone models to stimulate patient’s daily activities while 10 to 100 N were applied to fixator models for the purposes of reviewing environmental loading to fixator-bone models. Findings revealed that maximum magnitude which caused deformation for predrilling and self-drilling models were located at the highest pin-bone interaction. Conversely, the maximum magnitude of the von Mises strain and stress was located at the lowest pin-bone interaction by omitting the existence of fixator for both Case 1 and 2. There was no obvious difference in the comparison of both models in terms of deformation. However, predrilling models have higher strain and stress than self-drilling models. In sum, findings indicated that self-drilling models have better performance compared to the predrilling models.

Isolation and Partial Characterisation of Thermophilic Cellulolytic Bacteria from North Malaysian Tropical Mangrove Soil.

This study reports the biodiversity of thermophilic cellulolytic bacterial strains that present in the north Malaysian mangrove ecosystem. Soil samples were collected at the four most northern state of Malaysia (Perak, Pulau Pinang, Kedah and Perlis). The samples obtained were first enriched in nutrient broth at 45°C and 55°C prior culturing in the carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) agar medium. Repeated streaking was performed on the CMC agar to obtain a pure culture of each isolate prior subjecting it to hydrolysis capacity testing. The isolates that showing the cellulolytic zone (halozone) were sent for 16S rRNA sequencing. Total seven isolates (two from Perak, three from Kedah, another two were from Perlis and Penang each) showed halozone. The isolate (KFX-40) from Kedah exhibited highest halozone of 3.42 ± 0.58, meanwhile, the one obtained from Perak (AFZ-0) showed the lowest hydrolysis capacity (2.61 ± 0.10). Based on 16S rRNA sequencing results, 5 isolates (AFY-40, AFZ-0, KFX-40, RFY-20, and PFX-40) were determined to be Anoxybacillus sp. The other two isolates were identified as Bacillus subtilis (KFY-40) and Paenibacillus dendritiformis (KFX-0). Based on growth curve, doubling time of Anoxybacillus sp. UniMAP-KB06 was calculated to be 32.3 min. Optimal cellulose hydrolysis temperature and pH of this strain were determined to be 55°C and 6.0 respectively. Addition of Mg2+ and Ca2+ were found to enhance the cellulase activity while Fe3+ acted as an enzyme inhibitor.

A Comparative Study for Different Sizing of Solar PV System under Net Energy Metering Scheme at University Buildings

Malaysia has moved forward by promoting the use of renewable energy such as solar PV to the public to reduce dependency on fossil fuel-based energy resources. Due to the concern on high electricity bill, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) is keen to install solar PV system as an initiative for energy saving program to its buildings. The objective of this paper is to technically and economically evaluate the different sizing of solar PV system for university buildings under the Net Energy Metering (NEM) scheme. The study involves gathering of solar energy resource information, daily load profile of the buildings, sizing PV array together with grid-connected inverters and the simulation of the designed system using PVsyst software. Based on the results obtained, the amount of solar energy generated and used by the load per year is between 5.10% and 20.20% from the total annual load demand. Almost all solar energy generated from the system will be self-consumed by the loads. In terms of profit gained, the university could reduce its electricity bill approximately between a quarter to one million ringgit per annum depending on the sizing capacity. Beneficially, the university could contribute to the environmental conservation by avoiding up to 2,000 tons of CO2 emission per year.

Psychological Factors Towards Purchasing Decision Among Students in School of Business Innovation and Technopreneurship

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between psychological factors towards purchasing decision among the students of School of Business Innovation and Technopreneurship, Universiti Malaysia Perlis. A quantitative method was used in this study for data gathering. 150 questionnaires were distributed to the students in School of Business Innovation and Technopreneurship, Universiti Malaysia Perlis. The psychological factors are motivation and needs, perception, and beliefs and attitude.

The Emergence Themes of Staff and Course Evaluation at UniMAP: A Grounded Theory Approach

This paper concentrates on the emergence factors and themes that surfaced as result of paper and online course evaluation activities among students at Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) that have never been reported prior to this. Before the online course and lecturer evaluation practices every semester, students need to fill out the form manually in order to evaluate the courses and lecturers, and this brings a lot of disadvantages and problems to the university. School of Human Development and Technocommunication (iKOM) has initiated the online course and evaluation approach, and is now being utilized by all schools at UniMAP. This research and innovation has also been awarded gold at the 11th Innovative and Creative Convention held at Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) in 2015. The actual research attempted to assist the university to improve its way of handling and processing information that occurs every semester or biannually by focusing on factors that contribute to its predicament for staff and students at UniMAP. In addition, the research seeks to understand the antecedents, contexts, and prevailing conditions that influence it as well as the phenomenon, the coping strategies, and the consequences resulting from the coping strategies. Using a grounded theory methodology, in-depth interviews were conducted on students and staff from different schools at UniMAP. The data were analyzed using NVivo 10 by methodically coding and categorizing the data in open, axial, and selective coding to arrive at a model development. Working hypotheses were obtained based on informants’ individual comments and experiences that uniquely contribute to the body of knowledge on this new phenomenon at UniMAP. The involved elements derived from the model are the antecedents, the phenomenon itself, the coping strategies by informants, and the consequences resulting from these strategies. The significance of this study lies in its attempt to provide a working framework for reducing the dilemma when the time comes to execute staff and course evaluation that will eventually add up to time and money lost. This study is hoped to benefit all the parties: staff, students, the university, and other stakeholders to maximize the benefits of online evaluation practices. At a time when most assessments are done online around the world, this research is both timely and necessary.

Rippability Assessment of Weathered Sedimentary Rock Mass using Seismic Refraction Methods

Rippability or ease of excavation in sedimentary rocks is a significant aspect of the preliminary work of any civil engineering project. Rippability assessment was performed in this study to select an available ripping machine to rip off earth materials using the seismic velocity chart provided by Caterpillar. The research area is located at the proposed construction site for the development of a water reservoir and related infrastructure in Kampus Pauh Putra, Universiti Malaysia Perlis. The research was aimed at obtaining seismic velocity, P-wave (Vp) using a seismic refraction method to produce a 2D tomography model. A 2D seismic model was used to delineate the layers into the velocity profile. The conventional geotechnical method of using a borehole was integrated with the seismic velocity method to provide appropriate correlation. The correlated data can be used to categorize machineries for excavation activities based on the available systematic analysis procedure to predict rock rippability. The seismic velocity profile obtained was used to interpret rock layers within the ranges labelled as rippable, marginal, and non-rippable. Based on the seismic velocity method the site can be classified into loose sand stone to moderately weathered rock. Laboratory test results shows that the site’s rock material falls between low strength and high strength. Results suggest that Caterpillar’s smallest ripper, namely, D8R, can successfully excavate materials based on the test results integration from seismic velocity method and laboratory test.

Systemic Approach to Elevation Data Acquisition for Geophysical Survey Alignments in Hilly Terrains Using UAVs

This study is about systematic approach to photogrammetric survey that is applicable in the extraction of elevation data for geophysical surveys in hilly terrains using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). The outcome will be to acquire high-quality geophysical data from areas where elevations vary by locating the best survey lines. The study area is located at the proposed construction site for the development of a water reservoir and related infrastructure in Kampus Pauh Putra, Universiti Malaysia Perlis. Seismic refraction surveys were carried out for the modelling of the subsurface for detailed site investigations. Study were carried out to identify the accuracy of the digital elevation model (DEM) produced from an UAV. At 100 m altitude (flying height), over 135 overlapping images were acquired using a DJI Phantom 3 quadcopter. All acquired images were processed for automatic 3D photo-reconstruction using Agisoft PhotoScan digital photogrammetric software, which was applied to all photogrammetric stages. The products generated included a 3D model, dense point cloud, mesh surface, digital orthophoto, and DEM. In validating the accuracy of the produced DEM, the coordinates of the selected ground control point (GCP) of the survey line in the imaging area were extracted from the generated DEM with the aid of Global Mapper software. These coordinates were compared with the GCPs obtained using a real-time kinematic global positioning system. The maximum percentage of difference between GCP’s and photogrammetry survey is 13.3 %. UAVs are suitable for acquiring elevation data for geophysical surveys which can save time and cost.

“Talking Phonics for Autism”: Developing A Multi-Purpose Touch Screen Technology Software Application Which Utilizes Sound Articulation Point to Teach Autistic Children

This paper aims to examine the potentials of the multi-purpose touch screen technology application which utilizes a sound articulation point software called "TALKING PHONICS FOR AUTISM"as an alternative method of teaching phonics to autistic children. "TALKING PHONICS FOR AUTISM"is developed via a collaborative effort between the Centre of International Languages (CIL) and the School of Human Development and techno Communication (iKOM), University Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP). The reading skills of autism children are developed intofive (5) levels ofMalay reading comprehension skills. The first level consists of open syllables - vowels and consonants. The following consecutivethree levels comprised of closed syllables. The fourth level introduces vocal sequence while the fifth level constitutes of Malay language loans. The Malay-language dialect phonological theory by Tajul Aripin Kassin (2000) which is based on Clements &Keysher's (1980) Generative Booking Generic Fonology Model (CV) forms the theorectical framework of this paper.

Risky Riding Behaviour Among Malaysian Young Motorcyclists

The main objective of this study was to explore the relationship between riding attitude, sensation seeking, anger and riding confidence with risky riding behaviour among motorcyclist at University Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP). Partial Least Squares of Structural equation modelling (SEM) and Statistical Package Social Science (SPSS) are utilized to determine the direct effect of the variables. The results discovered that riding attitude, sensation seeking, and anger had shown positive significant relationship towards risky riding behaviour while riding confidence has shown negative significant relationship towards risky riding behaviour.

Influence of Courtyard Ventilation on Thermal Performance of Office Building in Hot-Humid Climate: A Case Study

The influence of courtyard on the thermal performance of Development Department office building in University Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP, Pauh Putra campus) is investigated through simulation study for the effect of ventilation on indoor air temperature and relative humidity of the building. The study is carried out using EnergyPlus simulator interface within OpenStudio and SketchUp plug in software to measure both of air temperature and relative humidity hourly on 21 April 2017 as a design day. The results show that the ventilation through the windows facing the courtyard has sufficient effect on reducing the air temperature compared to the ventilation through external windows since natural ventilation is highly effective on driving the indoor warm air out to courtyard. In addition, the relative humidity is reduced due to ventilation since the courtyard has high ability to remove or dilute indoor airborne pollutants coming from indoor sources. This indicates that the presence of courtyard is highly influential on thermal performance of the building.

Livelihood assets and food security achievement: An empirical study of the coastal fishermen in northern peninsular Malaysia

The aim of this study is to analyze the food security achievement among coastal fishermen in Northern Peninsular Malaysia (Kedah and Perlis,) based on ownership livelihood asset. For this purpose, a structured questionnaire is designed. It consists of livelihood asset (human, physical, finance, natural and social asset), government intervention and livelihood outcome. To achieve the aim of the study, data were collected from a sample of 400 coastal fishermen in Kuala Kedah, TanjungDawai and Yan in Kedah and Kuala Perlis in Perlis Malaysia. The smart PLS-SEM 2.0 was used to evaluate the relationship between the independent and dependent variables. This study discovers that 4 out of the 6 hypotheses were supported by the statistical analysis while 2 hypotheses were not supported. Lastly, a few recommendations were provided with a view to ensuring food security among the coastal fishermen in Northern Peninsular Malaysia.
