Spiritual Values in Emha Ainun Nadjib's Charismatic Leadership in Maiyah Congregation

Leadership is integral to human capital development within organizations. This study investigates the charismatic spiritual leadership of Emha Ainun Nadjib in Jamaah Maiyah, a community he has nurtured for three decades with a fluid, self-sustaining organizational structure. Through a qualitative phenomenological approach, this research delves into Emha Ainun Nadjib's leadership, drawing from interviews with his close associates and Jamaah Maiyah members, complemented by data from observations, texts, and videos. The findings reveal Emha Ainun Nadjib's innate leadership abilities, shaped by his lifelong journey and grounded in Islamic principles and the life of Prophet Muhammad. Emha Ainun Nadjib embodies several traits of charismatic leadership, including personal charisma, vision, exceptional oratory skills, courage, empathy, and the ability to inspire and position himself relative to his audience. His leadership style emphasizes influence rather than authority, inspiring Jamaah Maiyah members through his thoughts, conduct, and charisma. The study underscores the significance of ethical leadership rooted in spiritual values, highlighting the potential of religion to foster effective leadership. However, it acknowledges limitations in confirming the broader application of Emha Ainun Nadjib's leadership beyond his immediate circle and Jamaah Maiyah.

A Study on Paternalistic Leadership Style and its Implication on Workplace Relationship

This study looks into how relationships at work are affected by a paternalistic leadership style. A thorough examination using regression, correlation, and chi-square tests yields a number of important conclusions. First, it has been illustrated that paternalistic authority significantly advances positive working environment connections by factually noteworthy Pearson chi-square, probability proportion chi-square, and linear-by-linear affiliation chi-square tests. Furthermore, a Spearman’s rho coefficient of 0.538 and a p-value underneath 0.001 bolster the momentous positive affiliation between judgments of supervisors’ paternalistic authority properties and the certainty in its positive impact on collaborative adequacy. The regression analysis’s findings clarified the residuals and expected values, displaying accurate forecasts and an average of 3.81 for the mean predicted value. These results highlight the value of paternalistic leadership in creating a favourable work environment and indicate that it is still applicable in project-based organizational contexts.

Glass ceiling in Nigeria’s banking sector: perspectives of senior male employees

PurposeThis study aims to examine senior male employees’ perspectives on the glass ceiling in the Nigerian banking sector.Design/methodology/approachThe data were collected qualitatively using interviews with 43 senior male employees in four Nigerian banks.FindingsThis study finds that senior male employees acknowledge the challenges their female counterparts face concerning promotion. Senior male employees’ views on the value of gender-diverse leadership underscore the illusion of a “level playing field” because of a gender-neutral performance policy and a family–friendly policy for women. Nonetheless, the study notes a divergence in senior male employees’ perspectives about the professional progression of female employees (based majorly on age and ethnicity). The study concludes that the organisational culture and leadership that underpin poor female career progression are embedded in and driven by the culture in the empirical context.Originality/valueThe examination of senior male employees’ perspectives on the glass ceiling in the Nigerian banking sector offers significant theoretical and practical contributions to the extant literature on gendered occupational segregation by providing unique insights into how patriarchal societal and occupational culture, as well as (limited) family–friendly policies for women, influence the configuration of men’s views of gendered occupational segregation in the Nigerian banking sector.

This research aims to find and understand the strategies needed in shaping / developing effective and efficient Indonesian Education Innovations in the industrial era 4.0. so that the Indonesian nation can prepare human resources who are ready to compete in the world, Indonesian society is prosperous and fully independent. This research uses a qualitative approach, with a case study type method, namely by obtaining data from data sources from scientific journals, scientific articles, e-books taken from the website: Google Scholar, Research Gate, OSC, and journals from certain universities. These data sources were taken by paying attention to the keywords of educational innovation, industrial revolution 4.0, efficient and effective educational innovation. After that, information that is revelant with this research is taken. The result of this research is that there are 5 ways that are strategic values to organize innovation: Basic education, namely family education and focusing on forming good character, nature and work ethic. Making innovations that focus on creating a supportive environment that gives freedom to what students are interested in. Unveiling Success: A Case Study Exploring the Shared Values, Characteristics, and Strategies of Principals in Schools with Extremely Challenging Circumstances

The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the leadership values, characteristics, and strategies necessary for principals to be successful in schools that face extremely challenging circumstances. The research was conducted by performing a qualitative research study to explore the case of a Colombia-based school facing “extreme challenges”. Research methods employed include semi-structured interviews with five members of staff of the school in Villanueva, Colombia, and two external participants (both of them, successful principals in their schools). The results obtained by this research could prove that principals in successful schools suffering from extremely challenging circumstances share similar characteristics, values, and strategies, even when each school faces its own unique reality.

Examining the Contemporary Worker and the Workplace From a Leadership-as-Practice Perspective: A HRD Opportunity

In this article the author uses the lens of leadership-as-practice (L-A-P) to analyze the concerns of the worker in the contemporary workplace and proposes both new insights and potential remediations through a post-humanistic leadership centered on practice. L-A-P is designed to probe underneath the accepted or “natural” human resource practices to uncover the power dynamics in the workplace that have led to challenges to the worker in the form of burnout, lack of autonomy, and detachment. After introducing the practice approach to the workplace, the paper interrogates the potential value of leadership being viewed as a collaborative agency constituting changes in the trajectory of prefigured work practices that can have affirmative consequences via its ethical and critical approach to human resource development.

Developing accounting students as responsible leaders: A workshop on social innovation

Purpose: As accountants are often business leaders, it is crucial that accounting students are equipped to become responsible leaders. Thus, accounting students should be taught to value citizenship, for example, through exposure to social innovation as an expression of personal citizenship. The research aim of this study was to determine whether students perceived a social innovation workshop with subsequent reflection as effective in developing citizenship as a responsible leadership value during the accounting curriculum.Design/methodology/approach: Students who attended a social innovation workshop and carried out a subsequent reflection on citizenship were asked to complete a purposively designed online questionnaire, which gathered their perceptions on the workshop, social innovation and personal citizenship.Findings/results: Students perceived a workshop on social innovation with subsequent reflection as helpful in developing citizenship as a value. Students suggested that citizenship should be incorporated into the technical curriculum and that opportunities for service learning should be provided.Practical implications: Higher education institutions may draw on the findings in developing their citizenship curriculums amid the challenges of large class sizes and budget constraints. It is suggested that students enrolled in accounting programmes be provided with specific guidance to develop their reflective abilities.Originality/value: As student voice on responsible leadership and citizenship values in management education was mostly absent from literature (especially in emerging economies), this study obtained the perceptions of South African accounting students on this matter. Moreover, the study identified knowledge regarding social innovation as possible activator for developing students’ personal citizenship and enabling responsible leadership.

Implementing Strengths-Based Nursing and Healthcare Leadership Values to Promote Equitable, Diverse and Inclusive Workplaces: A Guide for Healthcare Leaders.

Inequities in healthcare persist despite equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) being embedded in the nursing code of ethics (CNA 2017). Strengths-Based Nursing and Healthcare Leadership (SBNH-L) is "a unique, value-driven, embodied approach that guides leaders and managers to create equitable and safe workplace cultures and environments that honour, develop, mobilize and capitalize on the strengths of individuals and their team" (Gottlieb et al. 2021a: 173) that can be used as a framework to promote EDI in the workplace. Herein, we present concrete suggestions for focusing on EDI through an SBNH-L lens in order to improve healthcare environments for practitioners.

Factors Affecting the Female School Principals’ (in Pakistan) Leadership and Management Styles

The number of female teachers and principals in Pakistan, in both public and private sectors, has significantly increased. However, there are very few studies that have focused on how female principals lead and manage their schools, as well as the factors influencing their leadership behaviors and practices. The study aims to investigate the barriers and factors that affect women's leadership and management styles in the context of Pakistan. The research collected data from school principals from three major cities of Pakistan: Rawalpindi-Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi. The individual interviews were conducted online using Zoom and Google Meet. Research participants were selected through a convenience sampling strategy. The interview data was analyzed and categorized into themes such as family and peer support, social, cultural, and religious associations, and their influence on school principals' perspectives and leadership value systems. This study finds a connection between family and peer support and their influence on the transition of teachers into school principals. This study also found that the social, cultural, and religious belief systems also contributed to the growth of female principals' development and played a crucial role in nurturing their leadership skills.

A model of senior Indigenous leadership in Australian higher education: An Indigenous academic perspective

PurposeSenior Indigenous leadership positions across the Australian higher education sector has increased over the past decade. Despite this advancement, there is limited understanding in terms of how to best integrate Indigenous leadership into existing governance structures of Australian universities. In 2018 the Walan Mayiny: Indigenous Leadership in Higher Education project commenced, aimed at establishing a model of best practice for the inclusivity of Indigenous leadership in higher education governance structures. This article presents key findings from the project, namely, a model of senior Indigenous leadership within the Australian universities based on the perceptions of a group of Indigenous academics.Design/methodology/approachThrough qualitative semi-structured interviews with Indigenous academic staff, the perceived value, characteristics and challenges of senior Indigenous leadership were examined. The varying opinions held by Indigenous academics in relation to the qualifications and experience required to fulfil a senior Indigenous leadership position were also highlighted. In doing so, a model of senior Indigenous leadership within the Australian higher education system is presented. The model of best practice presented in this article is underpinned by Indigenous Institutional Theory (Coates et al., 2022), a theoretical framework developed from the Walan Mayiny study.FindingsThe research findings highlight the diverse opinions of Indigenous academics in relation to the qualifications and experience required to fulfil a senior Indigenous leadership position. The six essential components are built upon the core characteristics, values and behaviours that senior Indigenous leaders need to have according to Indigenous academics, in order to advance Indigenous success within the academy.Originality/valueGiven Australian universities are being called upon to ensure that senior Indigenous leaders are in the best position possible to forge institutional change, senior Indigenous leaders within the academy may find the contextual Indigenous leadership model beneficial. The model allows one to uphold cultural integrity and fulfil the responsibilities and obligations of their higher education institution, while being able to serve their Indigenous colleagues and communities, leading to the advancement of Indigenous higher education outcomes. Importantly, the model can be adapted to suit all First Nations Peoples globally, who also find themselves working within the shackles of Western institutions.

Training the next generation of community-engaged physicians: a mixed-methods evaluation of a novel course for medical service learning in the COVID-19 era

BackgroundMedical school curricula strive to train community-engaged and culturally competent physicians, and many use service learning to instill these values in students. The current standards for medical service learning frameworks have opportunities for improvement, such as encouraging students to have more sustainable and reciprocal impact and to ingrain service learning as a value to carry throughout their careers rather than a one-time experience. PEDS 220: A COVID-19 Elective is a Stanford University course on the frontlines of this shift; it provides timely education on the COVID-19 pandemic, integrating community-oriented public health work to help mitigate its impact.MethodsTo analyze our medical service learning curriculum, we combined qualitative and quantitative methods to understand our students’ experiences. Participants completed the Course Experience Questionnaire via Qualtrics, and were invited to complete an additional interview via Zoom. Interview transcripts were analyzed using an interactive, inductive, and team-based codebook development process, where recurring themes were identified across participant interviews.ResultsWe demonstrate through self-determination theory that our novel curriculum gives students valuable leadership and project management experience, awards strong academic and community-based connections, and motivates them to pursue future community-engaged work.ConclusionsThis educational framework, revolving around students, communities, and diversity, can be used beyond the COVID-19 pandemic at other educational institutions to teach students how to solve other emergent global health problems. Using proven strategies that empower future physicians to view interdisciplinary, community-engaged work as a core pillar of their responsibility to their patients and communities ensures long-term, sustainable positive impact.Trial registrationN/A.

Black Women in Leadership Positions in Rural Nonprofit Organizations: Shifting Toward Intentional Intergenerational Leadership and Mentorship Model Centered on Black Women’s Collective Identity

ABSTRACT Black women overcome various social and structural obstacles while advancing to leadership positions. The purpose of this study is to understand the lived experiences of Black women leaders as they rose to the leadership position. We used the grounded theory method to analyze the lived experiences of n = 12 Black women leaders working in nonprofit organizations, from a broader sampled study from 2017–2018, using semi-structured interviews, in rural East Texas. Based on our analyses, Black women's leadership trajectory centered around intergenerational leadership development, leadership values, and other’s perception of Black woman in leadership. The themes generated show that Black women have remarkable resilience in a service-driven leadership ideology grounded in faith, family, community support, and the collective identity of being a Black woman. Generating intentional leadership pathways for strong and compassionate next-generation of Black women leaders and mentors is essential for development and sustainability of nonprofit human service organizations.

Missing Transformational Place Leadership-Why High-Tech Industries are not Developed in Hong Kong

This paper adopts a place leadership perspective to examine the failed efforts of developing high-tech industries in Hong Kong. It demonstrates that it is challenging to change from transactional to transformational leadership and argues that the failure of developing high-tech industries in Hong Kong is partially attributable to the lack of transformational political and business leaderships. The political leaders' ineffectiveness in developing hightech industries in Hong Kong is also attributable to the regional/national/international institutional structural forces that have created both opportunities and challenges. This study contributes to the discussion on the critical value of transformational place leadership for creating new local/regional economic growth path and the embeddedness of place leadership in local/regional/national political and economic institutions.

Sara Pataanguna's Leadership Model in the Context of Globalization

Purpose: The purpose of this article is to describe and analyze Sara Pataanguna's leadership values and apply these concepts in the context of globalization. It aims to highlight the relevance of Sara Pataanguna's leadership model in overcoming global challenges and promoting sustainable international cooperation. Method: This research utilizes qualitative methods, employing an analytical approach to history, literature, and the social context of the Sultanate of Buton. The focus is on leadership values that reflect a balance between self-nobility, state interests, and religious primacy. Result and Conclusion: The main finding of this study is that Sara Pataanguna's leadership model can be effectively adopted to overcome global challenges and promote sustainable international cooperation. By emphasizing values such as feeling, empathy, respecting cultural plurality, and supporting international cooperation, leaders can build respectful relationships, overcome inequality, and promote social justice in the era of globalization. Implication of the Research: The research suggests that Sara Pataanguna's leadership values offer practical guidance for leaders in navigating the complexities and challenges of globalization. By incorporating these values into their leadership approach, leaders can address global issues such as climate change, international conflict, and economic inequality with integrity and justice. Originality/Value: This article provides significant value by highlighting the relevance of Sara Pataanguna's leadership model in the modern context of globalization. It emphasizes the importance of cultural diversity, international cooperation, and social justice in addressing global challenges and promoting sustainable development.

"The Space Is as Much Yours as It Is Mine": Insights From Health System Leaders About Inclusive Leadership.

The long-standing systemic inequities highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic and current events of social injustice have underscored the importance for health system leaders to develop or strengthen their competencies related to equity, diversity and inclusion. Inclusive leadership values different perspectives across organizational hierarchies. It reduces psychological distress and improves the performance of individuals and teams in health settings. Through semi-structured interviews, we explored the inclusive leadership experiences of five health system leaders. This study offers initial insights by unpacking inclusive leadership as a competency, identifying barriers and enablers and providing advice for current and future health system leaders.

Judge Deborah and Pastor/Teacher Priscilla: Templates for Contemporary Biblical Women’s Leadership

Based on the examples of Judge Deborah from the Old Testament and Pastor/Teacher Priscilla from the New Testament, this paper contends that women have a biblical responsibility to lead in any vocation for which God has called and anointed them, and the Christian church has a biblical responsibility to accept and encourage them. Women leaders offer valuable leadership qualities, as illustrated by Deborah, the prophetic judicial/governmental/military leader of a nation, and Priscilla, the theologian, educator, missionary, and pastor in the nascent church. This paper further argues that leadership structures are not complete or fully effective without feminine inclusion and participation. The church and the world have historically deprived themselves of rich resources by curtailing women’s leadership roles. The need for rediscovering and recovering women’s leadership gifts and styles has never been more urgent or appropriate in the current cultural atmosphere requiring an emphasis on collaboration and cooperation (relationality), emotional intelligence that seeks transformation rather than transaction, and servant leadership, as manifested in Deborah and Priscilla as leaders. The church would be wise to embrace the Deborahs and Priscillas, as well as other types of women leaders whomGod has placed in her midst, thus creating strong, responsive, and nurturing communities that reflect Jesus to the world.

Exploring the evolution of religious moderation leadership from the local to national level

Religious conflicts in Indonesia are prevalent, with endless debates, provocations, and strains among religious groups. Therefore, promoting moderation is crucial to alleviate, minimize, or even eradicate such tensions. Based on the country’s history related to the monarchy system, as well as the jumbled existence of political, religious, and social leaders in society, the role of a leader is significant. Unfortunately, Western, religious, and secular values of leadership have limited opportunities for implementation because of Indonesia’s heterogenous community. Therefore, this article argued that the native leadership knowledge of tona’as from Minahasa is a promising area to explore for religious moderation. To achieve the desired result, descriptive, analytical, and argumentative methods were employed. In conclusion, the responsibility, requirements, and praxis of a tona’as offers alternative insights into leadership in relation to religious moderation in Indonesia.Contribution: This article contributes the values of leadership model in Minahasa that could be a constructive contribution to the religious moderation in Indonesia. The knowledge and insight of tona’as as an original culture and tradition offers leadership philosophy that could bring harmony and peace.
