Performance Study of Asphalt Mixtures Reinforced with Gradated Basalt Fibers of Mixed Lengths

The length of basalt fibers affects the performance of asphalt mixtures. To explore the influence of different lengths of basalt fibers on the performance of asphalt mixtures, this study selected basalt fibers with lengths of 6 mm, 9 mm, and 12 mm to design gradations that were incorporated into asphalt mixtures to prepare specimens. High-temperature rutting tests, immersion Marshall tests, freeze-thaw splitting tests, and low-temperature splitting tests were conducted, resulting in 11 test mix designs and 12 test indicators. Then, a multi-objective grey target decision method was used to optimize the optimal combination ratio of basalt fiber lengths. The results indicate that compared to asphalt mixtures with single-length basalt fibers, incorporating well-combined basalt fibers significantly enhances the high-temperature, low-temperature, and water stability performance of asphalt mixtures. According to the grey target decision method, this study determined that a basalt fiber combination ratio of 3:4:3 for lengths of 6 mm, 9 mm, and 12 mm provides the best overall performance of asphalt mixtures. Additionally, when designing asphalt mixtures with graded basalt fibers, the inclusion of 9 mm fibers should be the primary control point. These research findings provide important guidance for the enhanced application of basalt fibers in road engineering.

Electrical resistivity of eco-friendly hybrid fiber-reinforced SCC: Effect of ground granulated blast furnace slag and copper slag content as well as hooked-end fiber length

Over the last 20 years, the development of electrically conductive composites for removing snow and ice from transportation infrastructure has received exceptional traction. However, these composites need to exhibit stable electrical conductivity and high mechanical properties to be sustainable and cost-effective. Towards this goal, the article investigates the roles of ground granulated blast furnace slag (BFS) and copper slag (CS) content, in addition to hooked-end steel fiber length, on the electrical properties of eco-friendly ultra-high performance hybrid fiber-reinforced self-compacting concrete (HFR-SCC) for the first time in the literature. For this purpose, sixteen eco-friendly electrically conductive ultra-high-performance HFR-SCC were designed based on the variable parameters of four different BFS/total binder ratios (20, 40, 60, and 80 %), a CS/total fine aggregate ratio of 50 %, and two different hooked-end fiber lengths (30 and 60 mm), while all mixes used 1.75 % by volume fraction of steel fibers. After determining the workability properties (slump-flow and T500 values) of all mixes, compressive strength and electrical resistivity/conductivity tests of 90-day specimens were conducted. Additionally, environmental and economic evaluations of all mixes in terms of sustainability were performed in order to clarify the effects of the variable parameters. Taking into account the experimental results obtained, it was observed that all electrically conductive ultra-high performance HFR-SCC mixes demonstrated satisfactory workability properties, while the compressive strength values reached to impressive values of 127 MPa. The optimum BFS/total binder ratio was identified to be 40 % for higher compressive strength and conductivity of ultra-high performance HFR-SCC specimens. On the other hand, the addition of CS to the mixes resulted in an increase of almost 9 % in compressive strength compared to one without CS, while at the same time, a significant increase of approximately 363 % was observed in the electrical conductivity values of the specimens. As for the influence of different lengths of hooked steel fibers, the use of 30 mm length hooked-end steel fibers in HFR-SCC mixes performed better in terms of compressive strength, whereas 60 mm fibers performed better regarding electrical conductivity. In conclusion, this experimental work has evidenced that it is possible to develop an eco-friendly and sustainable electrically conductive ultra-high performance cementitious composite (the optimal mix compressive strength and electrical resistivity values were 127 MPa and 2242 Ω.cm, respectively) by using waste from different industries such as iron and copper. Thus, it will provide important insights for the design and application of future electrically conductive concretes, which can be an important alternative in efficient active deicing and snow-melting applications.

Climate sensitive tree growth modelling of Myrocarpus frondosus in Southern Brazil using tree-ring time series and distributed generalized additive lag models

Abstract Climate change is expected to strongly affect the functioning of tropical and subtropical forest ecosystems around the globe, and tree-ring analysis is proving increasingly useful for understanding the changing dynamics in these environments. However, traditional dendroecological methods were not originally designed to jointly consider inter-annual and inter-tree variations, often assuming linear growth-climate relationships, and limiting the potential to address in-deep questions regarding the tree growth sensitivity to environmental drivers. In the present study, we applied a flexible generalized additive model to assess the climate-sensitivity of the species Myrocarpus frondosus Allemão growing in a subtropical Atlantic Forest (AF) site in southern Brazil. Tree-ring width time series from 117 stem cores together with monthly climate data of temperature and precipitation covering the period from 1968 to 2021 were used for model construction. The model was designed to simultaneously encompass detrending, to capture nonlinear effects of climate variables and their interactions and to predict mean tree-ring widths for the species. Based on a distributed lag model approach, we also tested the influence of different lengths of lagged climate series over the model accuracy. Both precipitation and temperature proved to be strong drivers of M. frondosus radial growth in the subtropical AF. An interaction effect between these regressor variables revealed a likely water stress scenario arising from warm and dry summer conditions, with strongly negative impacts for the species. Detrimental impacts on tree dormancy period can also be expected due to milder winters, with legacy effects on the radial increments across two subsequent years. In addition to monitoring, the approach applied here meets the needs for more robust predictions of the impacts of future climate conditions on species and communities, contributing to efforts aimed at the management and conservation in tropical and subtropical ecosystems, particularly in the AF.

An intelligent assessment method of criminal psychological attribution based on unbalance data

Criminal cases often exhibit imbalance and cannot be extended by data augmentation when classified into attribution types. To solve the problem of unbalance data in offenders’ attribution classification, this paper proposes a criminal psychological attribution assessment model by an improved Balanced TF-Distinguishing IDF method (B-TF-dIDF) and constructed a hybrid network with attention method to fuse numerical and text features for improving the accuracy. First, as a statistical method, B-TF-dIDF is presented to reduce the impact of class-imbalance for extraction of numerical features, in which a balanced element is added to reduce the effects of incorrect type keywords on classification, and a distinguishing element is added to discriminate the types of keywords. Then, an improved hybrid network model composed of Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is constructed to balance the influence of different lengths of text samples for extracting the semantic features of criminal texts. For evaluating different feature weights by their importance, Spatial Attention is used to improve CNN in the feature maps. Moreover, the self-attention is also performed to re-evaluate the mixed features. Finally, the softmax classifier provides a scientific basis for developing a hierarchical treatment mechanism further. Additionally, we build a criminal data set with labels from real cases for testing. The experiment proved that the proposed model is better than other related methods in various evaluation indicators, including the micro and macro scopes. Moreover, the F1 of minority samples has increased by 6%–8%, indicating that the proposed method can reduce the impact of class-imbalance.

Utilization method of low-grade thermal energy during drilling based on insulated Drill pipe

Downhole heat damage during drilling seriously restricts the exploration and development of deep oil and gas reservoirs and geothermal resources. The petroleum industry focuses on controlling the downhole heat damage during drilling while utilizing low-grade thermal energy and making it profitable. Therefore, a techno-economic coupling evaluation model is developed for a low-grade thermal energy utilization system developed for use during drilling along with a wellbore heat transfer model. Subsequently, based on the model, the influence of different lengths and installation positions of insulated drill pipe (IDP) on the downhole temperature is studied. Then, on the premise of satisfying the wellbore cooling target, the system is economically evaluated based on factors such as production time, government subsidy, and electricity price, and the corresponding measures are proposed to make the system profitable. Finally, a set of efficient IDP-based low-grade thermal energy utilization methods is developed. The case study presented herein shows that the IDP length that allows the system to reach the maximum profit in the 10th year is 4720 m for a horizontal well with a depth of 6200 m when the government one-off subsidy rate is 30% and electricity price is increased by 30%.

Experimental Study on the Mechanical Properties and Influencing Factors of Glass Fiber-Reinforced Permeable Concrete.

In order to improve the mechanical properties and deformation characteristics of permeable concrete, glass fiber was added to this type of concrete. Based on an unconfined compressive strength test, non-contact full-field strain measurement system, and scanning electron microscopy test, the effects of aggregate particle composition, shaking time, fly ash content, fiber length, and fiber content on the strength and permeability of permeable concrete were studied. The results show that the strength and water permeability of permeable concrete are negatively correlated with an increase in shaking time. When the aggregate particle size is 5-10 mm, the permeable concrete has both good strength and permeability. Proper incorporation of fly ash improves the compactness inside the structure. The influence of different lengths of glass fiber on the strength of permeable concrete first increases and then decreases, and the permeable property decreases. With the same fiber length, the strength increases first and then decreases with an increase in the content, while the porosity and water permeability coefficient decrease. Under the test conditions, when the length of glass fiber is 6 mm, and the dosage is 2 kg/m3, the strength performance of permeable concrete is the best, and the permeability effect is good at the same time.

Influence of Different Lengths and Volumes of Basalt Fibre on Mechanical Properties of Concrete

In this research work, the influence of basalt fiber lengths and volumes on mechanical properties of concrete such as compressive strength, flexure strength and split tensile strength are studied. 12 and 24 mm lengths of basalt fiber having the same diameter (13 µm) were used in the experimental work. The influence of 0.10%, 0.15%, 0.20%, 0.25%, 0.30%, 0.35%, 0.4% and 0.5% volume of basalt fiber on mechanical properties of concrete have been studied. The results of conventional concrete and basalt fiber reinforced concrete were compared. Normal strength concrete M30 grade was considered in the work and the mechanical properties were measured at 3, 7 and 28 days of hydration period. The experimental investigation shows that high dosage of fibers creates workability problems such as mixing, clumping and balling effects. Experimental results show that there is no improvement in the compressive strength of concrete when basalt fibers were added in plain concrete mix at all ages of concrete. Moreover, the compressive strength values become unstable when basalt fibers are added to concrete. Maximum value of split tensile strength and flexure strength was obtained for 0.35% (9.275 kg/m³) basalt fiber content for both 12mm and 24mm length of basalt fiber at all ages of concrete. Comparing both 12mm and 24mm basalt fiber lengths, the 24 mm length of fiber has shown superior performance in relation to flexure strength and split tensile strength. Overall, the optimum length of basalt fiber is 24 mm and the optimum volume fraction of basalt fiber is 0.35%.

INFLUENCE OF DIFFERENT LENGTHS OF MILK HOSES ON SANITARY AND HYGIENIC INDICATORS OF MILK

The article presents the results of research aimed at studying the effect of different lengths of milk hoses for pumping milk from the milking parlor to the cooling tank on the sanitary and hygienic indicators of milk. In the course of the work, the influence of different lengths (internal surface area) of milk transfer hoses on the total bacterial contamination of milk samples from a single milk yield was determined. In terms of titratable acidity, mechanical contamination and somatic cell content, milk corresponded to “Extra” grade.

Computational Study on the Microscopic Adsorption Characteristics of Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonates with Different Chain Lengths on Anthracite Surface

In order to explore the influence of different lengths of hydrophobic carbon chains on the diffusion characteristics of surfactants on the surface of anthracite, six linear alkyl benzene sulfonates with different hydrophobic carbon chain lengths were selected (mC, m = 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18; m represents the numbers of carbon atoms in the hydrophobic carbon chain), and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were adopted. Models of surfactant-anthracite, surfactant-graphite layer, and water-surfactant-anthracite were constructed. After analyzing a series of properties such as adsorption energy, diffusion coefficient, radial distribution function (RDF), and hydrophobic tail order parameters, it was found that 12C had the highest adsorption strength on the surface of anthracite; the reason was that 12C had the highest degree of aggregation near the oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of anthracite. Further studies had found that the hydrophobic tail chain of 12C had the strongest isotropy. The study fills the gap in the systematic study of the diffusion characteristics of linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) with different chain lengths on the surface of anthracite, enriches and develops the basic theory of coal wettability, and also provides technical ideas for the design of new surfactants and new dust suppression agents.

Formation of reproductive organs in an early-ripening soybean variety, depending on the daylight duration

To study the reaction of an early-ripening soybean variety to the formation of plant reproductive organs under the influence of different length of daylight hours, studies of 2 sowing periods in a growing house with a new early-ripening variety Sentyabrinka of the FSBSI FRC VNII of Soybean were conducted. Artificial reduction of the daylight duration to 8 hours was established from the phase of the 3rd triple leaf with alternating day and night periods in each variant 7 times during the growing season. The control was plants whose growth and development took place in natural light conditions. According to the research results, it was found that the change in the daylight duration during the vegetation period had a significant impact on the duration of the phases of plant growth and development, the growing season as a whole. When sowing soybeans on May 28 with a natural daylight, the height of plants and their seed productivity were higher than those of plants with a shortened daylight. At this sowing period, the highest productivity was obtained from one plant – 9.3 g, which is 1.0 g more compared to soybean plants with a sowing period of June 3. The growth of plants, the formation of reproductive organs and the seed productivity of the early-repining variety Sentyabrinka depended on the duration of daylight, which can be regulated by the sowing period.

Thermal decomposition characteristics and potential hazards of three new ionic liquids of alkyl imidazoline hexafluorophosphates by TG and ARC

Imidazoline ionic liquids (IMILs) because of its unique performance in the synthesis, liquid phase extraction environment, energy and other fields have broad application prospects, for the safety of the unknown material, study the thermal decomposition characteristics and potential hazards is very necessary. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the risk of three IMILs during production, transportation, storage, and application using thermogravimetry (TG) and accelerating rate calorimeter (ARC). The influence of different lengths of alkyl substituents on ILs stability was systematically analyzed. The apparent activation energy (Ea) and pre–exponential factor (A) of IMILs were calculated by Flynn–Wall–Ozawa (F–W–O) and Coats–Redfern (C–R) methods. Then, the mechanical function of their decomposition reaction was obtained by using the C–R method. The kinetic compensation effect is discussed. Finally, according to the experimental data under adiabatic condition by accelerating rate calorimeter (ARC), it is proved that the runaway reaction of the three IMILs is slow. This study confirms the low potential harmfulness of the above three microorganisms, gives their safe temperature range, and provides a reference for their safe use.

An Intrusion Detection Model With Hierarchical Attention Mechanism

Network security has always been a hot topic as security and reliability are vital to software and hardware. Network intrusion detection system (NIDS) is an effective solution to the identification of attacks in computer and communication systems. A necessary condition for high-quality intrusion detection is the gathering of useful and precise intrusion information. Machine learning, particularly deep learning, has achieved a lot of success in various fields of industry and academic due to its good ability of feature representation and extraction. In this paper, deep learning methods are integrated into the NIDS. The intrusion activity is regarded as a time-series event and a bidirectional gated recurrent unit (GRU) based network intrusion detection model with hierarchical attention mechanism is presented. The influence of different lengths of previous traffic on the performance is then studied. Some experiments are performed on the dataset UNSW-NB15, in which the proposed hierarchical attention model achieves satisfactory detection accuracy of more than 98.76% and a false alarm rate (FAR) of lower than 1.2%. An attention probability map to reflect the importance of features is then visualized using the attention mechanism. The visualization ability assists in providing an understanding of the varied importance of the same features for different traffic classes and to determine feature selection in the future.

Experimental analysis of open check dams and protection bars against debris flows and driftwood

The paper addresses the influence of intense sediment transport (bed load and debris flow) on the efficiency of the structures aimed at the interception of wood logs. In the literature different devices designed to intercept woods are proposed: steel barriers, net barriers, check dam with steel bars positioned in the opening. In this paper we firstly define some fundamental dimensionless parameter governing the phenomenon, in order to determine a rational criterion to evaluate the efficiency of the different kind of devices. In particular, we deepen the interaction between slit check dams and driftwood, in both bed load and debris flow conditions. Starting from the results of this first analysis, we propose some arrangements of steel bars be installed in the check dam. Through a laboratory experimental investigation, by now conduced in simplified conditions (i.e. spherical mono-dispersed sediments), we define some criteria to obtain the best design parameters for the bars, that is their optimal disposition and spacing, in function of the logs characteristics (mainly the lengths). We investigate also the influence of different lengths of the transported woods, finding a general criterion to evaluate an overall length representing the logs ensemble.

Increasing the length of EM-9 interstock enhances production efficiency in Imperial Gala apples

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of different lengths of EM-9 interstock, on the production and fruit characteristics of Imperial Gala apples more than eight years old. This experiment was conducted in a commercial orchard located in Vacaria-RS, Brazil, situated at an altitude of 955 m , during seasons 2005/06, 2007/08, 2010/11, 2011/12 and 2012/13. The treatments consisted of five lengths of EM-9 interstock (10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 cm) connecting the Marubakaido rootstock to the Imperial Gala scion. For production efficiency a positive correlation between increased efficiency and the length of interstock was observed. Likewise a positive correlation was also noted for quality parameters of the fruit; firmness and classification (Category 1). From this study we conclude that a EM-9 interstock of 30 cm on Marubakaido rootstock is the most suitable for the vigor control of Imperial Gala apples, it ensures greater production efficiency and firmer fruit.

High Sensitivity Refractometer Based on a Tapered-Single Mode-No Core-Single Mode Fiber Structure.

We have proposed a novel tapered-single mode-no core-single mode (TSNS) fiber refractometer based on multimode interference. The TSNS structure exhibits a high contrast ratio (>15 dB) and a uniform interference fringe. The influence of different lengths and diameters of the TSNS on the refractive index unit (RIU) sensitivity was investigated. The experimental investigations indicated a maximum sensitivity of 1517.28 nm/RIU for a refractive index of 1.417 and low-temperature sensitivity (<10 pm/°C). The experimental and simulation results are also in good agreement.

Fuel cell health prognosis using Unscented Kalman Filter: Postal fuel cell electric vehicles case study

The Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) health monitoring and management are of critical importance for the performance and cost efficiency of Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV). Prognostics play an important role in improving the lifetime and reducing maintenance costs of PEMFC by predicting the degradation trend. In this paper, the degradation prediction of PEMFC is based on a novel model-driven method which combines the Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) algorithm with the proposed voltage degradation model. The experimental data originated from the FCEVs which achieve postal delivery mission in the real road are used for construction and validation of the proposed model-driven prognostic method. At our best knowledge, this is the first application which uses field-based data for FC health prognosis. The influence of different lengths of measured voltage data on degradation prediction of PEMFC, and the degradation prediction performance of PEMFC in different FCEVs are also investigated by the proposed method. Test results show that the proposed model-driven method is able to accurately estimate the voltage degradation trend of PEMFC in the FCEV. When more data are applied to learning the degradation of PEMFC, the mean Relative Error (RE) in the prediction phase will decrease. Especially, when the learning data exceeds 45 h, the mean RE in prediction phase is reduced to 0.68%. Considering that the maximum mean RE in the prediction phase is 2.03% for 3 postal FCEVs, the proposed method can be applied in the degradation trend prediction of PEMFC in FCEV under real conditions.

Coordination of surge protective devices in low voltage AC power installations

The surges protection in low-voltage AC power circuits is commonly realized by Surge Protective Devices (SPDs). These devices divert a large amount of the surge energy to the ground and reduce the surge voltage to the level acceptable for protected device(s). Adequate protection performances are provided by applying multiple-stage protection assuming cascade deployment of SPDs starting from distribution board toward equipment in an installation. Therefore, SPDs coordination, (i.e. selection of SPDs parameters as well as determination of necessary distance between stages) becomes of great importance and the paper deals with this issue. The proper SPDs coordination is significant for both protected equipment and SPDs themselves (their survival during surges). The paper provides an analysis of the SPDs coordination for case of two-stage protection system. The influence of different lengths of cables between protection stages, as well as influence of type and parameters of load on SPDs protection characteristics have been analyzed and discussed with the purpose of determination of requirements for proper surge protection and coordination of applied SPDs.

Influence of Different Lengths of Rubber Tube on Patients After Esophageal Stent Implantation Using a Silk Thread.

Our objective was to compare the efficacy of different lengths of rubber tube (6 French) on patients with esophageal stent implantation performed using a silk thread. We measured the effects in terms of pain and foreign body sensation felt in the pharynx and esophageal mucosa of the patients. A retrospective analysis was conducted using records of 65 patients who were divided into 3 groups. Group A had 20 cases with the distal end of the tube toward the nasal cavity, Group B had 21 cases with the distal end of the tube reaching the nasopharynx without exceeding the soft palate, and Group C had 24 cases with the distal end of the tube toward the upper end of the stent. Follow-up was performed on 1 day, 2 days, 1 week, 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 6 weeks, and 8 weeks postoperatively. During each period, the pain scores for Groups B and C were lower than those for Group A (p < .05), whereas no difference was observed when Groups B and C were compared. Although no variations were seen between the 3 groups in terms of the proportion of patients with foreign body sensation on the first day (p > .05), Groups A and B had a lower proportion than Group C (p < .05) at those periods. No difference was observed when Groups A and B were compared. In conclusion, the Group B method was successful in alleviating the side effects caused by the silk thread.

Understanding of aerobic granulation enhanced by starvation in the perspective of quorum sensing.

Three sequencing batch reactors (M1, M2, and M3) were set up to investigate the influence of different lengths of starvation time (3, 5, and 7h) on aerobic granulation in the perspective of quorum sensing (QS). Autoinducer-2 (AI-2) level was quantified to evaluate the QS ability of aerobic granules. The results indicated that AI-2 level increased steadily during a cycle of sequencing batch reactors, suggesting that starvation was closely related to AI-2 secretion. In the long-term operation, aerobic granules cultivated using a prolonged starvation period had a better integrity and a higher level of cell adhesiveness despite a slower formation speed. With the extension of the starvation period, the total amount of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) displayed an increasing tendency. EPS with large molecular weight (MW) also reached a higher level using a prolonged starvation period. However, a higher level of AI-2 and cell adhesiveness was observed in M2, which might be related to more stable granules. The results implied that the starvation period could trigger AI-2 secretion and promoted the production of large MW EPS, leading to cell adhesiveness enhancement and granule formation. Therefore, a combination of different starvation periods was proposed in this study in order to improve aerobic granulation.

Influence of different peg length in glenoid bone loss: A biomechanical analysis regarding primary stability of the glenoid baseplate in reverse shoulder arthroplasty.

There is no biomechanical basis to determine the influence of different length of the central peg of the baseplate anchored within the native scapula in glenoid defect reconstruction in cases of degenerative or posttraumatic glenoid bone loss in reversed shoulder arthroplasty. The purpose of this study was to analyse the stability of different peg lengths used in glenoid bone loss in reversed shoulder arthroplasty. Different lengths of metaglene pegs with different depths of peg anchorage performed with or without metaglene screws in sawbone foam blocks were loaded in vertical and horizontal directions for differentiating load capacities. Simulated physiological loadings were then applied to the peg implants to determine the limits of loading in each depth of anchorage. The loading capacity of the implant was reduced as less of the peg was anchored. The vertically loaded implants showed a significantly higher stability, in contrast to those loaded horizontally at a corresponding peg length and depth of anchorage (p < 0.05). The tests revealed that the metaglene screws are more essential for primary stability than is the peg particularly in the vertically directed loadings (2/3 anchored: peg contributed to 28% of the stability, 1/3 anchorage: peg contributed to 12%). Under the second test conditions, the lowest depth of peg anchorage (1/3) resulted in 322 Newtons [N] in the long peg with a vertical loading direction, and in 130 N in the long peg with a horizontal loading direction (p < 0.05). The pegs should be anchored as deeply as possible into the native scapula bone stock. The metaglene screws play a major role in the initial stability, in contrast to the peg, and they become more important when the depth of the peg anchorage is reduced. If possible, four metaglene screws should be used in cases of uncontained bone loss to guarantee the highest stability.
