Perception of Teachers and Students by Using Interactive Multimedia to Improve Science Literacy and Self-Efficacy

The purpose of this study is to analyze and explain Perception of Teachers and Students by Using Interactive Multimedia to Improve Science Literacy and Self Efficacy. The research method was descriptive method.The population in this study were ten junior high school teachers and seventy five junior high school students from five different schools. The data collection used questionnaires and data analysis techniques using percentages. The results showed that the teachers perception of learning using interactive multimedia in the aspect of implementation was low category, because teachers still use books and students worksheet. Teachers perceptions of scientific literacy aspects are low, but teachers have tried to apply them in learning. Furthermore, teachers perceptions of students self efficacy in category “medium”. Students' perceptions for aspects of learning using Multimedia interactive (MMI) and scientific literacy were still low, but on aspect of students self efficacy in the “high” category. Then, the percentage of students requirements of using MMI in learning in “high” category. It can be concluded that using MMI to improve students sains literacy and students self efficacy.

Capaian Aspek Kompetensi Sains Siswa SMA dengan Pembelajaran Model Problem-Based Learning dan Cooperative Learning Tipe STAD

Science literacy is an essential element of science and technology learning. The mastery of science literacy drives people being competitive and worth employed, especially in the workplace where an employee is expected to be innovative. Globally the mastery of society's science literacy of Indonesian students was still low. Science literacy consists of 4 dimensions, namely context, science competence, knowledge, and science attitude. The science competency dimension becomes important to be achieved by the students as an indicator of the achievement of science literacy. Related to improving science literacy through components of learning strategy, based on various relevant research, in SMA Negeri 1 Tanjungpinang has been conducted a study to compare the achievement of science competency with Problem-based learning and Cooperative Learning (STAD type). To test whether there is a significant difference in the average level of science competency scores between the PBL class and the CL-STAD class in SMA 1 used Mann-Whitney test which shows a significant value of 0.000 < 0.05. These results show that there is a significant difference in the average level of science competency of the students X IPA class with the implementation of the PBL and CL-STAD in SMA 1 Tanjungpinang. The achievement of science competency in PBL class is higher than the achievement in CL-STAD class based on 3 aspects, namely: identifying scientific issues, explaining scientific phenomena, and using scientific evidence.

Everything Is Science: A Free City-Wide Science Festival.

A week-long, city-wide science festival called Everything is Science (EiS) was developed to educate the community in an informal manner. The festival serves as a platform for presenters from diverse professions to give engaging talks (without PowerPoint slides) to the public, free of charge, in restaurants and bars around town. Over 350 people attended the events over 5 days with 33 presenters. Surveys completed by attendees and session coordinators indicate strong support for this festival. Altogether, the EiS festival serves as a no-cost method to engage with the community and improve science literacy with potential for adoption in other cities.

Development of Interactive Physics E-Module Using the SETS (Science, Environment, Technology, Society) Approach to Improve Science Literacy Dimension of Content and Process Dimensions in Fluid Dynamics Material

This development research produces interactive physic electronic products using the interactive physics SETS approach (Science, Environment, Technology and Society) in terms of presenting the components of illustration, language, and the suitability of the material. The validity results of the electronic module carried by experts and teachers develeop the average yield of 96.36% so it is feasible to use. The study design is pretest-posttest control group to see the improvement of literacy dimension process. Subject of the study consisted of two groups: the experimental group and the control group. The data collection formed by science literacy of dimension content and process is analyzed using MANOVA with significance level of 5%. The results showed that the electronic module using SETS approach significantly influence the improvement of science literacy dimension content and process.

Teens learning epidemiology? A cohort study on epidemiology instruction for high school youth

PurposeThe aim of the study was to determine if epidemiology instruction for high school students can improve science literacy skills compared with other science, technology, engineering, and math courses. MethodsThe Test of Scientific Literacy Skills (TOSLS), a validated measure of scientific inquiry and interpretation, was used to assess the change in students’ (n = 116; 63% female, 36% Asian, 30% Hispanic, 54% 12th grade, 48% mid poverty, and 24% high poverty) science literacy skills based on pre–post performance. ResultsMultilevel models adjusted for individual-level student gender, race-ethnicity, grade level, age, semester, and poverty status showed similar TOSLS performance for physics (β = 0.58; 95% confidence interval [CI], −0.44 to 1.61), biology (β = 0.09; 95% CI, −0.82 to 1.00), and statistics (β = −0.76; 95% CI, −1.84 to 0.32), and lower for chemistry (β = −1.09; 95% CI, −2.26 to 0.08) and geology (β = −1.04; 95% CI, −2.06 to −0.02) relative to the reference group, epidemiology. Models testing the interaction of course subject and sociodemographic factors did not show gender differences in TOSLS performance for epidemiology, in contrast with physics (lower in females) and biology (higher in females). ConclusionsStudy findings suggest that epidemiology may be an appropriate method for supporting high school students’ development of science literacy skills, although larger and more nuanced studies are needed.

Effectiveness of the use of developed teacher’s book in guiding the implementation of physics teaching that provides science literacy and instill spiritual attitudes

Research and development to produce Physics teacher’s book products to guide the planning and implementation of Physics teaching that can provide scientific literacy and instill students’ spiritual attitudes has been carried out. Usage test of the developed teacher’s books have been carried out in one of the high schools in West Java. Subject in this study is one of physics teacher and 40 students. The focus of the research is to get an overview of the effectiveness of the use of the developed physics teacher’s books in guiding teachers to carry out physics learning that can improve the science literacy and spiritual attitudes of students. The instrument used in this study are the science literacy test and the spiritual attitude scale respectively. The effectiveness of the teacher’s book in guiding the teacher to carry out physics teaching is determined based on the number of students who achieve a high increase in science literacy and spiritual attitudes. The results of the study show that the use of the developed teacher’s books has high effectiveness in guiding teachers to carry out physics learning that can improve science literacy and moderate effectiveness in instill a spiritual attitude.

Augmented reality based on stem for supporting science literacy in vocational education

AR development is becoming very popular in various fields of science. Some researchers have demonstrated that AR has the potential in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Puse of total AR integrated STEM needs to be studied more deeply, how STEM-AR characteristics, and how the potential of AR-based STEM to support the scientific literacy of students. Searches through relevant sources, the online database of which seven ACM Digital Library, ERIC, ieeexplore, ISI Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Springer. The results showed that the use of STEM-AR potentially an effort to improve science literacy.

Finding Learning Strategy in Improving Science Literacy

The result of science literacy in Indonesian students has been satisfactorily yet. The government has introduced some new learning strategies. The research is aimed to finding some learning strategies can improved literacy science. The research was conducted in Indonesian school involving 213 participants who are divided into study groups using several learning strategies. Research involved all student on 10 th grade in that school. Improvement of science literacy was analyzed by N-gain and comparing some strategies of learning was analyzed by Anova followed Turkey. The results shows the impovement of science literacy in the learning by using scientific approach was not as good as inquiry approach, Argument Driven Inquiry (ADI), and Science Technology Education Matematics (STEM). The results of science literacy finding the improvement in science literacy of students who learn by using scientific approach comparing using scientific approach is similar to the one using Science Technology Scociety (STS) strategy.

REAL LIFE EXPERIENCE IN INQUIRY-BASED EARTH AND SPACE SCIENCE INSTRUCTION

Science teachers play an important role in improving science literacy of their students. In achieving and building students’ interest and literacy about science, teachers must have an appropriate approach to be used in teaching. In teaching science, students must be active and participative in the learning process. Engaging students in variety of activities can help them in constructing their own knowledge by experiencing and observing results of the experiment. Teachers must provide real world experiences for students to engage with around global issues. This took the form of service-learning projects emphasizing issues of global concern, or working in teams to devise and debate solutions to real-world problems. Notably, these activities were student-centered and inquiry-based. Teachers also incorporated their own cross-cultural experiences into the classroom through informal conversation, discussions, around artifacts and photos, and lesson plans that incorporated knowledge gained and relationship built though their global experiences. The need for utilizing real life experiences in science teaching is a must in today’s classroom as the new generations of learners are ready to work with the different global issues and concerns of which can play an important role in the learning process. However, the utilization of real life experiences in science instruction grows as a measure when teachers are able to develop an engaging and positive learning environment for learners. With this, teachers should carefully plan how to utilize the students’ real life experiences efficiently and effectively in inquiry-based science instruction to enhance more the teaching-learning process. The focus of this study was to determine the real life experience in inquiry-based earth and space science instruction in public secondary schools in Batangas City. The descriptive method of research was applied in the study, with the questionnaire as the main data gathering instrument responded to by 102 science teachers. Based on the analysis, it was revealed that real life experiences in science areas were moderately utilized by the students while teachers applied inquiry-based learning activities along its phases of exploration, concept introduction, and concept application to a moderate extent. It was recommended that the proposed learning plans be used to enhance science instruction and an instrument or assessment tool may be developed to determine the impact of utilization of real life experiences in teaching-learning process.

Coloring Exercises for Insect Identification and Conservation Awareness

The Endangered Species Act in the United States of America currently protects more than 1,500 species, 74 of which are insects, including the american burying beetle (ABB) and the rusty patched bumble bee. Insects that are experiencing population declines, such as the monarch butterfly, are under consideration for protection. Awareness of biological diversity, the ability to recognize an endangered species, and understanding the conservation of beneficial insects can begin at an early age. We designed a coloring exercise to promote insect species awareness and introduced this activity to elementary and middle school students in Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA. We assessed students’ insect identification abilities by presenting a quiz on species diversity and ABB identification before and after the coloring exercise. Inspired by the quiz results, we created coloring templates for additional insect species, including the monarch butterfly, ladybird beetles, and bumble bees. These exercises will promote awareness of endangered species and improve science literacy in the classroom.

Penerapan Model Discovery Learning Berbantuan Media Audio Visual untuk Meningkatkan Literasi Sains Siswa Kelas 5 SD

Based on the results of pre-cycle test and observation of the fifth-grade students at Unggulan Muslimat NU Kudus Elementary School, it`s found that the average students` science literacy is low.This study attempts to discover the improvement of Unggulan Muslimat NU Kudus Elementary School fifth grade students` science literacy when apply discovery learning assisted by audio visual media. This study is a Classroom Action Research (CAR) that conducted in Unggulan Muslimat NU Kudus Elementary School, in even semester in the academic year of 2017/2018. The subjects of this research are the researcher as the teacher model and the fifth grade students that consists of 29 students. This study held for two cycles, there are two meeting in every cycle and consist of four phases: plan, action, observe, dan reflection. The independent variable of this study is discovery learning assisted by audio visual media, and the dependent variable is science literacy. Data collections of this study are science literacy test for knowledge aspect (cognitive), and observation for science literacy of attitude aspect (affective), competention aspect (psychomotor). This study is qualitative and quantitative descriptive analysis. The result of this study shows that, there is enhancement of science literacy of the fifth grade students of Unggulan Muslimat NU Kudus Elementary School in the force material, between first cycle 71,9% and improved in the second cycle 81,5% with high category. This results shows that the application of discovery learning model assisted with audio visual can improve science literacy of the fifth grade students of Unggulan Muslimat NU Kudus Elementary School.

Developing Web-Students’ Worksheet Based On Inquiry Training For Increase Science Literacy

Observation conducted by researchers at SMA N 1 Sorong indicate that teacher apply direct instruction model when learning physics. In addition, students tend to play HP and laptop during the lesson. Though the use of technology can be integrated in learning. The purpose of this research is to increase the literacy of science in physics learning by using web-LKPD based inquiry training model. The method used in this research and development 4D (define, design, development and dissemination). The research involved 60 students at SMA N 1 Sorong, each of which 30 students on the control and experiment class. Data were analyzed statistically using SPSS 17 software. The statistics test used Manova. The average pre-test post-tes value eksperiment class are 30 and 83 with N-Gain value 0,76 in high category, while the average pre-tes post-test value are 11 and 59 with N-Gain value 0,53 in medium category. The result of data analysis shows cohen’s f value is 0,40 in high effect size which means that the web-LKPD based inquiry training gives a big effect on the ability of science literacy. Value of Hotelling’s T2 test known significance value 0.000 < 0,005 can be concluded that there is a difference in the average literacy ability of science between students using Web-LKPD-based inquiry training with learning resources commonly used by teachers. Based on data analysis, web-LKPD based inquiry training help to improve science literacy can be an innovation to improve students problem solving ability in high school physics learning.

The Development of Science Teaching Materials Based on STEM to Increase Science Literacy Ability of Elementary School Students

The purpose of this research is to develop science-based teaching materials STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) to improve science literacy skills of elementary school students. This study uses the Research and Development (Research and Development), Procedures studies using models dick and carey which has ten stages, namely:(1)Identifying Learning Objectives; (2)Conducting Instructional Analysis; (3)Analyzing Student Characteristics and Learning Contexts (4)Formulating Special Learning Objectives; (5)Developing Assessment Instruments; (6) Develop learning strategies; (7) Developing and Selecting Teaching Materials; (8)Carry out formative evaluations; (9) Making a revision of learning; (10)Design and carry out summative evaluation. Data analysis used qualitative descriptive and quantitative descriptive analysis. Design of teaching materials reviewed from the results of expert judgment’s. The practicality of teaching materials is viewed from the assessment of the implementation and response of users. The effectiveness of teaching material is seen from the mean of&nbsp; posttest value is greater than the mean of pretest value. The results of this research is (1) STEM-based teaching materials to improve the ability of scientific literacy valid and feasible to use; (2) STEM-based teaching materials are practically used in learning: (3) STEM-based teaching materials are quite effective in improving students' science literacy skills.

Virtual laboratory learning media development to improve science literacy skills of mechanical engineering students on basic physics concept of material measurement

This study aims to determine the description of virtual laboratory learning media development to improve science literacy skills of Mechanical Engineering students on the concept of basic Physics. Quasi experimental method was employed in this research. The participants of this research were first semester students of mechanical engineering in Majalengka University. The research instrument was readability test of instructional media. The results of virtual laboratory learning media readability test show that the average score is 78.5%. It indicates that virtual laboratory learning media development are feasible to be used in improving science literacy skill of Mechanical Engineering students in Majalengka University, specifically on basic Physics concepts of material measurement.

Hubungan Kemampuan Berpikir Kreatif dan Sikap Terhadap Sains Dengan Literasi Sains Pada Siswa Kelas XI IPA MAN

This research was intended to identify the correlation between (1) creative thinking and science literacy and (2) scientific attitude and science literacy in the concept of environment pollution. Sample was consisted of 219 eleventh grade science student of MAN Medan that was taken by cluster random sampling method. This study was encompassed phases preparation, action, and post research. The instrument were included to scientific literacy test, creative thinking test and scientific attitude questionary. The results is indicated that (1) there is positive correlation between creative thinking and science literacy with r=0.433 (2) there is positive correlation between science attitude and science literacy with r=0.363. (3) there is positive correlation between creative thinking and science attitude with science literacy with r=0,59. This study implies that reading comprehension and science attitude have important role to improve science literacy skill.

Generative Learning Model to Improve Science Literacy Competence on 10th Grade Students of Sciences Wahid Hasyim Senior High School on Temperature and Heat Topic

This research was aimed to determine the effect of generative learning models on the competence of science literacy and to know the difference in the side of improvement of students' science literacy competence compared with control class on temperature and heat focus lesson. This educational research was a quasi-experiment research with Nonequivalent control group design. The independent variable of this research was generative learning model and the dependent variable was students’ science literacy competence. This research was conducted in of one school in Sleman through saturated sampling technique. The experiment class is 10th grade students of 1st class and the control class is 10th grade students of second class. We used pretest and posttest as data collection instruments. The data analysis used descriptive statistic with measure of central tendency and size of dispersion include Normalized Gain and effect size. The result of this research showed that there was an effect of generative learning model in case of students’ science literacy competence on temperature and heat focus lesson with average 38,00 for pretest and 79,20 for posttest. There was also improvement on students’ science literacy competence with moderate improvement category, which was indicated by N-Gain value of experimental class 0.66. The control class which was treated with direct instruction model was also increased with N-Gain value of 0.48 or included in the moderate category also. The improvement of the experimental class has a very significant difference with the control class indicated by the effect size value of 1.028.

ANALISIS ASPEK LITERASI SAINS PADA BUKU TEKS PELAJARAN IPA KELAS V SD

The ability of scientific literacy important to have learners in understanding the environment, economy and problems in modern society. One effort to improve science literacy through the analysis of textbooks. This research analyzes aspects of scientific literacy in the fifth grade elementary science textbooks. Aspects of scientific literacy are analyzed include science as a way of thinking and the interaction of science, technology &amp; society. This type of research is descriptive, to collect data in the form of documentation. One book as a whole has been analyzed and generate different presentation of scientific literacy, namely: 5.8% (aspects of science as a way of thinking) and 1.2% (aspects of the interaction of science, technology and society). The second aspect is still slightly presented in each chapter. Even aspects of the interaction of science, technology and society only appears in Chapter 7 (7.4%) and Chapter 4 (0.5%). The following findings indicate that this book does not emphasize material support on the acquisition process and context. ANALISIS KEMAMPUAN AWAL LITERASI SAINS MAHASISWA PADA KONSEP IPA

Has conducted research that aims to determine the ability of early scientific literacy of students PGSD UNIROW on the concept of IPA consists of seven indicators: 1) identify the scientific opinion is valid 2) perform literature searches were effectively 3) to understand the elements of research design and how it will impact the findings / conclusions 4) make precise graph of the data; 5) solve problems using quantitative skills, including basic statistics; 6) understand and interpret basic statistics; 7) perform inference, prediction, and drawing conclusions based on quantitative data. The study is part of a study of the development of learning tools to improve science literacy. Science literacy proficiency tests were arranged were twenty-five items. Initial capability analyzed scientific literacy is the ability of scientific literacy of students before applied a model that could be expected to develop the ability of science literacy of students. The analysis showed that the literacy skills of students of higher science is an indicator of effective literature searches with a percentage of 40.15%. While the results of the analysis of the ability of scientific literacy of students lower is an indicator of solve problems using quantitative skills, including basic statistics with a percentage of 6.82%. The results obtained in accordance with the results of surve PISA 2003, 2006, 2009 and 2012 and the results of the TIMSS surve 2007dan year 2011 Indonesia demonstrate the ability of students in Indonesia, including in the low category.

The Intersection of Information and Science Literacy

To achieve higher science literacy, both students and the public require discipline-specific information literacy in the sciences. Scientific information literacy is a core component of the scientific process. In addition to teaching how to find and evaluate resources, scientific information literacy should include teaching the process of scholarship as a conversation and publication in the sciences. Faculty and librarians can be challenged in their efforts to teach students because of limited access to published research. Stronger scientific information literacy and more access to scholarly research could improve science literacy as a whole.

PENGEMBANGAN MODUL CONTEXTUAL TEACHING AND LEARNING (CTL) BERORIENTASI GREEN CHEMISTRY UNTUK PERTUMBUHAN LITERASI SAINS SISWA

Acid-base is one of topics considered difficult by students. This concept is broad, varied. Despite it is very closely related to everyday life, its application was still lacking. The development of teaching materials in the form of a module was deemed to be a solution to this problem. The aim of this research was to develop CTL module with green chemistry orientation in acid-base subject material to improve science literacy of students. This study was developed ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) model. The developed product was validated by three experts, a practitioner and ten high school students. Data were analyzed using percentage formula. Qualitative data in the form of comments and suggestions from validator were used as consideration to revise the developed module.Tthe effectivity of the module was assessed using N-gain test. Based on validation results, we obtained average of 86,5%, 97%, 88%, and 94,58%. Effectivity evaluation using N-gain test shows an average score of 0,5 with moderate category. Result of student attitudes towards science data has an average score of 74% with good qualifications. It was concluded that developed module prototype is effective for acid-base topic, and most likely for other topics in learning process and growing student science literacy.
