Assessing the Impact of Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) on Productivity and Efficiency in Faecal Sludge Management: A Case Study of the Giant Faecal Sludge Management Company in Ghana

Today’s environment had seen technology taking the center stage in research, and several researches in this area assess the impact of technology on the society and business organizations. This study outlines the impact of computer mediated communication (CMC) on productivity and efficiency in the faecal sludge industry and Sewerage Systems Ghana Limited was used as a case study. Selective sampling technique was used to identify the institution and respondents were randomly selected to undertake the study. A total of 92 respondents were engaged and a questionnaire was administered in order to get the required responds. The study indicates that about 53% of the respondents admitted to the use of emails as medium in communication to be the best medium in attaining high efficiency and productivity, while 28% believed the use of What’s App application would improve the effectiveness and productivity. Some respondents preferred other methods, for example, communicating face to face which they have highlighted is a medium which enhances interpersonal relationships. The use of printed memo and letters as well as the use of the notice boards was also endorsed to have positive consequence on productivity and efficiency. It was noted that the usage of CMC is highly dependent on age and educational background. As the age of the respondents increased, there was decrease in the utility acceptance of CMC and the reverse was noted for educational background. The highly rated and preferred medium of communication based on the study is the most used medium utilized by Sewerage Systems Ghana Ltd. Employing the most preferred medium for communication in the organization is evidenced in the high performance of the staff which is reflective in the overall performance of the plant operations. The application of the CMC and the utilization of the appropriate medium or media in the management of faecal sludge highly aided the productivity and efficiency of personnel as well the overall performance of the plant operations and hence the organization.

The Pragmatics of Arabic Religious Posts on Facebook: A Relevance-theoretic Account

Despite growing interest in the impact of computer-mediated communication on our lives, linguistic studies on such communication conducted in the Arabic language are scarce. Grounded in Relevance Theory, this paper seeks to fill this void by analysing the linguistic structure of Arabic religious posts on Facebook. First, I discuss communication on Facebook, treating it as a relevance-seeking process of writing or sharing posts, with the functions of ‘Like’ and ‘Share’ seen as cues for communicating propositional attitude. Second, I analyse a corpus of around 80 posts, revealing an interesting use of imperatives, interrogatives and conditionals which manipulate the interpretation of such posts between descriptive and interpretive readings. I also argue that a rigorous system of incentives is employed in such posts in order to boost their relevance. Positive, negative and challenging incentives link the textual to the visual message in an attempt to raise more cognitive effects for the readers.

The Impact of Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) on Productivity and Efficiency in Organizations: A Case Study of an Electrical Company in Trinidad and Tobago

This study investigates how computer mediated communication (CMC) and the electronic mailing system in particular have impacted on productivity and efficiency not to mention interpersonal interaction and increased use of technology in the organization. An electricity company was chosen for the case study since it had achieved approximately 78% computerization and networking of its office staff. Following the judgemental sampling technique to identify the organization, random sampling was used to select a sample size of 100 respondents. A questionnaire survey with sixteen items was self-administered over a one-week period. The results showed that 73% of the respondents agreed that CMC enhanced their overall productivity and efficiency while 27% differed. However, while the findings revealed that the introduction of CMC increased its use as a whole, it impacted negatively on interpersonal relationships among respondents.

DeRiK: A German reference corpus of computer-mediated communication

The paper describes an ongoing project that aims at building a reference corpus of German computer-mediated communication (CMC) as a new component of an already existing reference corpus of written contemporary German. The ‘Deutsches Referenzkorpus zur internetbasierten Kommunikation’ (DeRiK) shall include data from the most prominent CMC genres amongst German Internet users and, thus, close a gap in the coverage of the corpus resources in the project “Digitales Worterbuch der deutschen Sprache” (DWDS) which are maintained and provided by the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and the Humanities (BBAW). The focus of the paper is on the role of the DeRiK component within the DWDS framework, on sampling issues, and on CMC-specific issues of corpus annotation. 1. Virtual Transfer Price Negotiations: Unintended Interactions with Incentive Systems

Despite decades of research concerning the impact of computer-mediated communication (CMC) on decision-making, the potential interaction with the organization's management control system has just recently received attention. Media naturalness theory is used to develop hypotheses concerning the interactions of communication medium with the incentive pay scheme, a ubiquitous aspect of management control systems. A laboratory experiment was used to examine the interactions between two treatments: face-to-face negotiations versus virtual (computer-mediated) negotiations and cooperative versus competitive incentive pay schemes. Buyer-seller dyads negotiated the price and quantity of the transferred goods. Results indicate that while virtual negotiations are more efficient in terms of time than face-to-face negotiations, there is not a significant interaction with the incentive pay scheme for efficiency. However, results also indicate that virtual negotiations are less effective in terms of optimal quantity (organizational profit) than face-to-face, and that there is a significant interaction with the incentive pay scheme. Virtual negotiations have the unintended consequence of reducing the effectiveness (organizational profitability) of the negotiations.

Distributed Deception

This research examines the impact of computer-mediated communication, distributed communication, and knowledge of prior baseline behavior on an individual’s propensity to make veracity judgments. This study found that more detection confidence can come from knowledge of a person’s prior baseline behavior, being proximally located, the type of communication media used, and perceived relational closeness. These factors indirectly lead to less deception detection through more detection confidence and reliance on the truth bias, a fundamental belief in the truthfulness of others, even in a compute- mediated environment.

Reflections on Interactions in virtual worlds and their implication for learning art and design

As more educators venture into virtual worlds there is a need to consider the impact that these worlds have on the interactions between learners and teachers. The paper explores what is known about the impact of computer mediated communication and relates it to rich interactive 3d virtual environments. It recommends areas for consideration when using these spaces for art and design related activities The review of the literature reveals that many of the emotions and norms found in social interaction in the real world also transfer to the virtual world. Virtual worlds offer opportunities for engaging student centred activities but these require careful planning if they are to be successful.

Understanding coordination in computer-mediated versus face-to-face groups

Groups performed intellective and judgmental tasks in face-to-face (FTF) or computer-mediated communication (CMC) settings after coordination training or no training to determine the impact of CMC, training, and task type on group performance and coordination. Help seeking behaviors were stronger predictors of perceived and actual performance in CMC than FTF groups, but varied based on task type. In turn, training generally increased seeking behaviors, except non-task seeking behaviors in CMC groups; and seeking behaviors were stronger predictors for perceived performance in CMC than FTF groups. In addition, perceived performance was lower in CMC than FTF groups when untrained, but not when trained. Yet, performance agreement was similar on both tasks in FTF groups, but lower on the intellective than the judgmental task in CMC groups.

Habitus in Transition? CMC use and impacts among young women in the United Arab Emirates

This paper considers the impact of computer-mediated communication on the culture of the United Arab Emirates via the results of a brief study. The larger question being asked is if the very culture of the nation might be recast through the use of computer-mediated communication. While my survey was limited and thus the results preliminary, they contradict the view that CMC technologies will inevitably reshape “target” cultures as these technologies impose especially Western cultural values and communication preferences. Rather, my analysis suggests that UAE women students are more directly affected by consumerism as a culture dominating the Internet. More broadly, my students stand as examples of users who can consciously chose what elements of global cultures they wish to appropriate while they simultaneously insist on preserving their own cultural values and practices.

E-mail communication and supervisor-subordinate exchange quality: an empirical study

The impact of computer-mediated communication (CMC) on organizational cultures and users has been the focus of many previous studies. In their attempts to explain the effects of CMC in organizational communications, particularly the effects of e-mail, information systems researchers have tested theories that originated in a number of disciplines. Among the effects of CMC, one potentially important issue is the relationship between subordinates and their supervisors. This study empirically examines the impact of e-mail usage on the quality of these exchanges, and attempts to measure the resulting depth of the interpersonal relationships established between knowledge workers and their immediate superiors. The results show that among several usage factors investigated, e-mail communication frequency has a more direct correlation to exchange quality than other factors, among them communication richness, which did not have significant correlation. A path diagram was developed to illustrate the relationships of the variables.

Computer-Mediated Communication and Majority Influence: Assessing the Impact in an Individualistic and a Collectivistic Culture

Strong majority influence can potentially harm organizational decisions by causing decision makers to engage in groupthink. This study examines whether and how computer-mediated communication (CMC) can reduce majority influence and thereby enhance the quality of decisions in some situations. To measure the impact of CMC on majority influence, three settings (unsupported, face-to-face CMC, and dispersed CMC) were compared. Matching laboratory experiments were carried out in an individualistic (the US) and a collectivistic culture (Singapore) to determine how the impact of CMC might be moderated by national culture. An intellective and a preference task were used to see whether the impact of CMC might be moderated by task type. The results showed that the impact of CMC on majority influence was contingent upon national culture. In the individualistic culture, majority influence was stronger in the unsupported setting than the face-to-face CMC and dispersed CMC settings. In the collectivistic culture, there were no corresponding differences. The results also revealed that the impact of CMC on majority influence was not moderated by task type. Instead, task type had a direct impact on majority influence. Regardless of the setting involved, majority influence was stronger with the preference than the intellective task. Besides demonstrating how cultural factors may moderate the impact of CMC, this study raises the broader issue of cultural relativism in current knowledge on CMC.

Acceptance and use of computer-mediated communication by information students

Current trends in information technology developments mean that computer-mediated communication (CMC) systems can be expected to become progressively more versatile, widespread and significant both for work and for education. All students and staff of the Department of Communication and Information Studies at Queen Margaret College, Edinburgh, have used CMC systemati cally for more than five years. This has made it possible to carry out detailed longitudinal studies of the impact of CMC on academic users, and of the value they derive from it. Results are presented here of a survey of student use, including levels and patterns of messaging as well as perceptions of, and attitudes towards, CMC activities. Despite rapid changes in technological capabilities, there appears to be some stability of reactions to CMC, with students particularly valuing administrative and course- orientated uses.

Usage pattern and productivity impact of computer-mediated communication in a developing country: An exploratory study

For almost two decades, computer-mediated communication systems (CMCS) have been a major management communication medium in business organizations. This paper reports the findings of a case study of a large organization in Saudi Arabia. Data were collected from 136 CMCS users who have been using CMCS for an extended period of time. The results indicate that users exhibit high level of use of the CMCS. Generally, users view the CMCS as an important business communication medium. Almost one-third of the respondents notice a decrease in their use of other communication media while the rest observe no change. Communication partners were not limited to users' colleagues (same management level) but also included their superiors (higher management level). System-oriented contextual attributes including proper training, informative documentation, awareness campaigns, and good maintenance have emerged as the most important dimensions that may encourage or limit CMCS use. Also, users emphasize the importance of features as confirmation of receipts and message prioritization in CMCS. High levels of satisfaction and productivity impact are reported. The results provide useful insights into the management of CMCS organizations working in developing countries.

The impact of computer-mediated communication on the processes and outcomes of negotiated transfer pricing

New communication technologies are offering organizations options that were not previously available. These new opportunities have the potential to impact many aspects of the organization, including coordination and control efforts. Despite a growing literature concerning computer-mediated communication, the basic question of whether the simple switch from written to computer-mediated communication changes behavior still remains unanswered. We argue that advanced information technology has created a frame with enabling and limiting impacts that exists even when the major characteristics are not present. This paper reports the results of a laboratory experiment concerning the effects of communication medium on the process and outcomes of negotiations in a transfer pricing situation. An organizational coordination mechanism and its interactions with communication medium were also examined. Structured negotiations were communicated through written exchanges and through computerized networks where the media richness and technical system capabilities were the same in both media. The negotiation process and outcomes were both measured. The results show that communication medium does effect both the process and outcomes of negotiations, even when media richness and system capabilities are the same in both media. Computer-mediated communication took fewer rounds of negotiation to reach an agreement, leading to an improved process, but had lower outcomes with lower firm profit and lower perceived autonomy. Thus, these results support our argument that medium provides a frame that affects behavior even when the major characteristics of the medium are absent. Further, medium interacts with arbitration, demonstrating the importance of considering other coordination and control mechanisms when examining the impact of medium.

The impact of computer-mediated communication on self-awareness

The present research investigated whether computer-mediated communication enhances users' private self-awareness, while lowering their public self-awareness. Self-report measures of acute private and public self-awareness were administered to 55 subjects following either face-to-face or computer-mediated discussions of two choice-dilemma problems. It was found that, relative to the face-to-face comparison group, subjects using computer-mediation reported significantly higher levels of acute private self-awareness, and marginally lower levels of public self-awareness. Although computer users did not evaluate the social context differently from subjects communicating face-to-face, their evaluations were associated with the degree of acute public self-awareness they were experiencing. Low public self-aware computer users were more likely to evaluate the social context negatively. The social evaluations of face-to-face subjects were not related to their levels of self-awareness. The implications of these findings for future research examining the social psychological impact of computers and their use in different contexts are discussed.
