Assessing the Viability of Rainwater Harvesting System for Sustainable Manufacturing in Water Stressed Regions

Water is considered to the life wire of many manufacturing industry. Water is used for processing of materials, cooling of engines, firefighting and also important for sanitation and welfare of workers. As the population of the world increases, the demand for water to meet domestic and industrial needs of man increases. In line with sustainable development, there is need for practices in manufacturing which will help preserve scarce resources for domestic needs. The global trend in industries is sustainable manufacturing which is hinged at increasing operational efficiency and as well reducing cost and wastages. As a result, there is a growing interest on rainwater as an alternative source. In this paper, the rainwater harvesting system was assessed to establish its viability for a small scale pozzolana plant for sustainable manufacturing. The methodology adopted was estimating water consumption in the production plant and potential harvestable rainwater from the roof top. The harvestable rainwater was estimated based on the rainfall data obtained from the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) and the rooftop (catchment) area was determined by taking dimensions of the rooftop to establish the area while a collection efficiency of 90% was assumed. Design and operational parameters from literature was used to describe the effectiveness of the system for the study area. Results revealed that water demand to run the plant for production and sanitation for staff welfare can be covered substantially using rainwater with a reliability of 99.7% and annual water savings of 1,350,000.00. The investment is viable and will be amortized in only 1.6 years. The rainwater harvesting system will generate economic benefits by reducing the cost of production and consequently the selling price will be reduced for consumers.

Shrinkage estimation of long-term water ingestion rates.

Water consumption is a necessity for human life, though it also presents an opportunity for exposure to harmful chemicals and toxins. In order to gain a better understanding of the potential levels of chronic exposure, accurate estimates of long-term water consumption are needed. The objective of this study is to estimate long-term water consumption using a nationally representative sample of the US population. In this study, we use a random effects model to obtain shrinkage estimates of average daily water consumption for National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) participants from 2005 to 2010, and compare to their empirical 2-day averages. Our results demonstrate that the shrinkage estimates yielded a reduction in estimated mean water consumption. The 95th percentile was reduced from 3292 to 2529 ml/day. In addition, standard deviation of water consumption for this group decreased from 1052 to 688 ml/day. Similar reductions in the mean and variance were observed stratifying by age and race. Random effects models may provide a more accurate measure of daily water consumption and could be utilized for future exposure and risk assessments.

Balancing Water Demands and Increasing Climate Resilience: Establishing a Baseline Water Risk Assessment Model in Ethiopia

Water is essential to sustainable economic growth and climate change adaptation. Ethiopia’s growth and development are vulnerable to water security risks. Despite being known as the “water tower of Africa,” Ethiopia is naturally exposed to highly variable rainfall. Climate change and economic growth across sectors are increasing competing water demands. Recognizing these challenges, the Government of Ethiopia has identified balancing water demands and improving climate resilience as national priorities. Managing water risks requires decision-relevant water risk information. Water managers need to understand hydrological cycles and water use across society to ensure secure and sustainable water availability across sectors. Decision-makers in other sectors also need to understand their exposure to water risks to reduce their vulnerability. However, in Ethiopia, the data required to understand water risks are often lacking or outdated, and the modeling required to assess risks can be complex and resource intensive. This technical note describes the data and methodological approaches used to develop the baseline water risk model, presenting the results at a subbasin level. WRI developed new geospatially-explicit water withdrawal and consumption estimates for irrigation, livestock, domestic, and industry water use in Ethiopia, representing a 2015 baseline. We also extracted 36 years of remotely-sensed data to generate subbasin-level renewable water resources estimates.

Evapotranspiration mapping of commercial corn fields in Brazil using SAFER algorithm

SAFER (Simple Algorithm for Evapotranspiration Retrieving) is a relatively new algorithm applied successfully to estimate actual crop evapotranspiration (ET) at different spatial scales of different crops in Brazil. However, its use for monitoring irrigated crops is scarce and needs further investigation. This study assessed the performance of SAFER to estimate ET of irrigated corn in a Brazilian semiarid region. The study was conducted in São Desidério, Bahia State, Brazil, in corn-cropped areas in no-tillage systems and irrigated by central pivots. SAFER algorithm with original regression coefficients (a = 1.8 and b = –0.008) was initially tested during the growing seasons of 2014, 2015, and 2016. SAFER performed very poorly for estimating corn ET, with RMSD values greater than 1.18 mm d –1 for 12 fields analyzed and NSE values < 0 in most fields. To improve estimates, SAFER regression coefficients were calibrated (using 2014 and 2015 data) and validated with 2016 data, with the resulting coefficients a and b equal to 0.32 and –0.0013, respectively. SAFER performed well for ET estimation after calibration, with r 2 and NSE values equal to 0.91 and RMSD = 0.469 mm d –1 . SAFER also showed good performance (r 2 = 0.86) after validation, with the lowest RMSD (0.58 mm d –1 ) values for the set of 14 center pivots in this growing season. The results support the use of calibrated SAFER algorithm as a tool for estimating water consumption in irrigated corn fields in semiarid conditions.

Reference evapotranspiration estimation using equations with limited data in arid zones

Reference evapotranspiration (ETo), is the most important parameter to estimate water consumption. Nowadays the FAO-56 Penman-Monteith method is the most used in the world to estimate Eto, and recommended as the standard method. The main limitation to use this method is the availability of the requiere weather data. There are step by step calculations to estimate ETo when there is a lack of climate data; with the purpose to estimate the crop water consumption in arid regions, it was evaluated the presicion and aplicability of three equations to estimate this parameter when there is limited climate data. Estimates of Eto were performed for five sites, New Mexico State University main campus and its research centers Leyendecker, Artesia and Fabian Garcia, in new Mexico, USA; as well as the Agriculture and Range Science School of the Juarez University of Durango State in Mexico. The estimates of ETo were done with all required wheater data and with lack of solar radiation and relative humidity data. The presicion of the equations was evaluated by using the relative error and the index of agreement, consiedring as reference the FAO-56 with full weather data.

Response of shelterbelt transpiration to shallow groundwater in arid areas

Shelterbelts play an important ecological function in arid irrigation land, while competing for water which otherwise supports crop growth. Estimation of shelterbelt water consumption from groundwater is essential to better manage shelterbelts in irrigation districts, but often a challenging task due to its geometry and varying accessibility to groundwater. In the study, sap flow of Populus popularis planted along an irrigation canal was measured during two growing seasons (2016–2017) to investigate its response to varying shallow groundwater. Considering the radial pattern of sap flux density (Js) and measurement azimuthal effect, corrected Js was adopted to better represent transpiration. The results indicate that increased soil moisture and groundwater table during irrigation periods with water flowing in the canal enhance relative Js of shelterbelt by 5.5–25.8% from the non-irrigation intervals. The threshold of groundwater depth (3.6 m) is identified, beyond which transpiration of the seven-year-old shelterbelt becomes very low. Greenbelt transpiration strongly depends on groundwater within the threshold, and can be estimated through an exponential function of the ratio of atmospheric demand and groundwater depth. Besides, with the decrease of reference evapotranspiration from June to September, the sensitivity of shelterbelt transpiration response to groundwater table depth was increased. This study provides necessary information to evaluate farmland shelterbelt transpiration for rational water resource allocation to meet the ecological water requirement in arid areas with shallow groundwater.

An integrated assessment of the global virtual water trade network of energy

The global trade of energy allows for the distribution of the world’s collective energy resources and, therefore, an increase in energy access. However, this network of trade also generates a network of virtually traded resources that have been used to produce energy commodities. An integrated database of energy trade water footprints is necessary to capture interrelated energy and water concerns of a globalized economy,and is also motivated by current climate and population trends. Here, we quantify and present the virtual water embedded in energy trade across the globe from 2012 to 2018, building on previous water footprinting and energy virtual water trade studies to create an integrated database. We use data from the United Nations Comtrade database and combine several literature estimates of water consumption of energy commodities to generate the global virtual water trade network. Results include a comprehensive database of virtual water trade for energy at the country level, greatly expanding the literature availability on virtual water trade. The total volume of virtual water trade increased 35% from 157 km3 in 2012 to 211 km3 in 2018. The global trade of oil and fuelwood are consistent drivers of virtual water trade over time, whereas coal, hydrocarbons, and charcoal collectively contribute less than 4% of total virtual water trade between 2012 and 2018. Electricity, despite a less dense trade network constrained by infrastructure, contributes notably to virtual water trade, driven largely by water use for hydroelectricity. This study develops an integrated assessment of previous virtual water studies to estimate global virtual water trade of energy, creating a platform for future global studies.

CAMELS-BR: hydrometeorological time series and landscape attributes for 897 catchments in Brazil

Abstract. We introduce a new catchment dataset for large-sample hydrological studies in Brazil. This dataset encompasses daily time series of observed streamflow from 3679 gauges, as well as meteorological forcing (precipitation, evapotranspiration, and temperature) for 897 selected catchments. It also includes 65 attributes covering a range of topographic, climatic, hydrologic, land cover, geologic, soil, and human intervention variables, as well as data quality indicators. This paper describes how the hydrometeorological time series and attributes were produced, their primary limitations, and their main spatial features. To facilitate comparisons with catchments from other countries, the data follow the same standards as the previous CAMELS (Catchment Attributes and MEteorology for Large-sample Studies) datasets for the United States, Chile, and Great Britain. CAMELS-BR (Brazil) complements the other CAMELS datasets by providing data for hundreds of catchments in the tropics and the Amazon rainforest. Importantly, precipitation and evapotranspiration uncertainties are assessed using several gridded products, and quantitative estimates of water consumption are provided to characterize human impacts on water resources. By extracting and combining data from these different data products and making CAMELS-BR publicly available, we aim to create new opportunities for hydrological research in Brazil and facilitate the inclusion of Brazilian basins in continental to global large-sample studies. We envision that this dataset will enable the community to gain new insights into the drivers of hydrological behavior, better characterize extreme hydroclimatic events, and explore the impacts of climate change and human activities on water resources in Brazil. Water consumption in small mammals (dwarf rabbits, Guinea pigs and chinchillas): New data about possible influencing factors

Information on water requirement of small mammals is sparse and the assessment of daily water consumption is an important aspect of the veterinary practice in exotic pet nutrition. Water and feed daily intake are interlaced, that way the water to feed ratio is a meaningful indication. However, various factors such as ambient temperature or the uptake of substances to be eliminated via the kidney (i.e. calcium) must be taken into account when estimation of water consumption is carried out. Moreover, behavioural abnormalities could affect water consumption, like in the case of water uptake as a substitute action. Adequate water supply for small mammals is indispensable for health reasons (prophylaxis of urolithiasis) and consequences relevant to animal welfare. For this purpose, data from different trials enrolling no. 5 Flemish Belgian (FB) and no. 5 New Zealand White (NZW) rabbits, no. 10 dwarf rabbits, no. 7 guinea pigs and no. 7 chinchilla, were obtained to assess water intake according to feed rationing. Water balance following feed rationing was seen to differ across the species of small mammals considered in these trials. The comparative approach pointed to species-dependent water intake behaviour. Due to the species-related high variation in water uptake, it is not possible to give general recommendations for water supply of small mammals. In addition, water uptake is also influenced by the water content of the food, absolute dry matter uptake and food composition. Nevertheless, an additional supply of drinking water is recommended for all species, since unsatisfactory water supply reduces dry matter intake and may lead to energy undersupply.

Potential copper production through 2035 in Chile

In the long term, primary and secondary supply of refined copper satisfies demand. Numerous models exist to explain and predict demand and secondary supply; however, the projection of primary supply relies mostly on detailed knowledge of potential mining projects and on existing ore reserves and resources. Much discussion has occurred historically regarding the availability of resources and reserves for the future. Chile, being the largest copper producer, also has the largest reserves in the world; therefore, it retains its potential to be a key player in future supply. This article explores some of the most relevant resource and technological challenges that may emerge with an accelerated development of brownfield and greenfield copper mining projects in Chile through 2035, without considering economic, regulatory, and environmental constraints. A “Full Scenario” was created to accommodate these conditions and restrictions. It includes estimates of future ore reserves, copper production, plant capacity, ore grades, energy and water consumption, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and generation of tailings. Maximum production would exceed 10 million tons of contained copper from 2027 to 2030, with a resulting decrease of ore grades and the growth of energy and water consumption. The growth of indirect GHG emissions through 2035 is estimated at 18.4% less than copper production growth, because all new electric energy for this scenario would be based on renewable energy. Also, all new water used by 38 out of the 42 mining projects considered would be seawater, and some of the continental water used in 2019 would cease to be used in mining.

Fuzzy and improved fuzzy-wavelet approach in modeling municipal residential water consumption estimation using climatic variables

This work highlights the importance of fuzzy-wavelet denoise and fuzzy-wavelet compress in modeling the municipal residential water consumption estimation. To begin, fuzzy logic is used with different rules, membership criteria and fuzzy set. Based on accuracy of the developed model, optimum number of rules and best membership function were selected. To improve the accuracy of the single fuzzy model, wavelets technique (denoise and compress approach) was coupled with fuzzy logic and results were compared to single fuzzy technique. To map the input and output functions, the present research work includes Mamdani fuzzy inference approach based on various climatic input variables like rainfall, maximum temperature, minimum temperature and relative humidity. The models were trained based on climatic data to a certain period, and corresponding estimated models were tested for the same period. Result highlights that models with denoise and compress approach have better accuracy compared to single fuzzy model.

WILLINGNESS-TO-PAY FOR WATER SERVICE OF PEOPLE IN A COASTAL COMMUNE – A CASE STUDY IN VINH XUAN COMMUNE, PHU VANG DISTRICT, THUA THIEN HUE PROVINCE

These days, clean water plays a vital role in the life but many inhabitants in Vinh Xuan, a coastal commune, are facing the clean water shortages. This paper presents the results of water use situation, Willingness-To-Pay (WTP) and analyzing the factors affecting WTP for water service of residents in Vinh Xuan. A survey on water consumption and WTP estimation of users for water service experienced that only one-third of Vinh Xuan people have had access to clean water. This situation illustrated getting access as well as using clean water have been still limited while the demand of water use has been rising. Besides, more than a half of inhabitants in this commune accepted to pay for better water quality and regular water supply even the water price is higher from 500 to 1,000 dong per m3. The average WTP was calculated, 8,519 dong per m3 with households using piped-supplied water and about 8,750 dong per m3 with non-using tap water households. Through interview and regression model, some main factors affecting household’s water use were awareness of water use, income of residents, etc. Several solutions were proposed to improve the situation of water use and WTP for water service in Vinh Xuan.

Clean vehicles, polluted waters: empirical estimates of water consumption and pollution loads of the carwash industry

Carwash stations use large volumes of water and release harmful chemicals into the environment through their operations. While a significant body of literature has focused on exploring water use in the carwash industry, none has provided comprehensive information on both the pollution loads of the wastewater emanating from this industry and water consumption. Understanding how much water is used and the pollution loads of wastewater from this industry is useful to ensure adoption of water conservation measures and design wastewater recycling systems given the dwindling freshwater resources globally. This study estimated the freshwater quantities used to wash different vehicle types and the pollution loads of the resulting wastewater in the Kumasi Metropolis. Seven proxy carwash stations were purposively selected and monitored to estimate the water used to wash six different categories of vehicles. Composite wastewater samples from three carwash stations were analysed for concentrations of different contaminants which were used to compute pollution loads. Using R software, one-way ANOVA with Tukey's (HSD) post-hoc testing and 2-sample t-test at 95% confidence interval were employed to test statistical differences. After an 8-week monitoring campaign involving 3,667 vehicles, the study showed that average water used for each vehicle type were in the order: Motorbike - 97L (95% CI: 90–103L); Salon car - 158L (95% CI: 154–161L); SUV - 197L (95% CI:191–203L); Buses/Coaches - 370L (95%CI:351–381L); Articulated truck 1,139L (95% CI:916–1,363L); Graders/Loaders - 1405L (95% CI:327–2,483L). Overall, the carwash industry in the Metropolis uses about 1000m3 of freshwater daily and discharges the resulting wastewater into waterways untreated. The wastewater has a low Biodegradability Index (0.3–0.4) and is characterized by a mildly alkali pH (7.6–8.6) with high levels of Sulphates (40.8–69.8 mg/L), COD (990–1413 mg/L), TSS (1260–3417 mg/L) and E. coli (2.3–4.7 × 103 CFU/100mL). Pollution loads of BOD and COD were up to 2tons/year and 6tons/year respectively. Stipulated effluent discharge guideline values were mostly exceeded – in some cases by up to 68 times. To avert the unbridled wastage of freshwater, the study recommends enforcement of wastewater recycling for all carwash stations and promulgation of a tax system that rewards stations that recycle wastewater and surchages those wasting freshwater.

Modeling water consumption of Populus bolleana by artificial neural network based on fuzzy rules

To explore the water consumption characteristics of trees, the thermal dissipation probe technology was used to monitor sap flow of Populus bolleana in east sandy land of Yellow River, from July to November in 2017. Microclimate variables were monitored. We analyzed the diurnal and seasonal variations of water consumption, and proposed the models for water consumption with back propagation neural network (BPNN) and Elman neural network (ENN) based on fuzzy rules. Results showed that the average sap flow rate of P. bolleana was 4.98 g·cm-2·h-1 in growing season (July to October), with solar radiation (Rs), temperature (T), vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and relative humidity (RH) as the main factors affecting sap flow. Due to the influence of meteorological factors, water consumption was characterized by obvious seasonal variation, with that in summer (July-August) being 1.4 times of that in autumn (September-October). BPNN and ENN models based on fuzzy rules were used to simulate water consumption of P. euphratica. The optimal parameter calibration of two models explained more than 80% of the total variation, which indicated that these two models could more accurately simulate water consumption. Compared with the BP neural network model, the simulated results of ENN model showed that the relative error was reduced by 27.0%, RMSE was reduced by 24.3%, Nash-Sutclife efficiency coefficient increased by 67.9%, R2 was higher than 0.80. The ENN model performed better than BPNN model with a higher efficiency and goodness of fitness. ENN model effectively improved the simulating accuracy of water consumption. Therefore, it could be used as an optimal model to estimate water consumption of P. bolleana in east sandy land of Yellow River.

Association Between Eliminating Water From Surgical Hand Antisepsis at a Large Ophthalmic Surgical Hospital and Cost

Alcohol-based surgical scrub is recommended for presurgical antisepsis by leading health organizations. Despite this recommendation, water-based scrub techniques remain common practice at many institutions. To calculate the potential financial savings that a large, subspecialty ophthalmic surgical center can achieve with a conversion to waterless surgical hand preparation. A review of accounting records associated with the purchase of scrubbing materials and water company invoices was conducted to assess direct costs attributable to water consumption and scrub materials for brushless, alcohol-based surgical scrub and water-based presurgical scrub. The flow rate of scrub sinks to estimate water consumption per year was tested. Savings associated with operating room (OR) and personnel time were calculated based on the prescribed scrub times for waterless techniques vs traditional running-water techniques. The study was conducted from January 5 to March 1, 2019. The primary outcomes for this study were the quantity of water consumed by aqueous scrubbing procedures as well as the cost differences between alcohol-based surgical scrub and water-based scrub procedures per OR per year. Scrub sinks consumed 15.9 L of water in a 2-minute period, projecting a savings of 61 631 L and $277 in water and sewer cost per operating room per year. Alcohol-based surgical scrub cost $1083 less than aqueous soap applied from wall-mounted soap dispensers and $271 less than preimpregnated scrub brushes per OR per year in supply costs. The decrease in scrub time from adopting waterless scrub technique could save between approximately $280 000 and $348 000 per OR per year. Adopting waterless scrub techniques has the potential for economic savings attributable to water. Savings may be larger for surgical facilities performing more personnel-intensive procedures.

On the water footprint in power production: Sustainable design of wet cooling towers

Renewable based power plants must be installed where the main resource is available. The weather affects the design and the water footprint of these plants. Two types of power cycles, a regenerative Rankine cycle, representing biomass and solar thermal plants, and the combined cycle, corresponding to biogas or gasification based processes, are studied. The facilities are modeled unit by unit in detail to compute the cycle yield, the condenser duty, the water consumption and the natural draft wet cooling tower geometry for its sustainable design. Hot regions, appropriate for solar facilities, and humid regions require larger and more expensive towers. Areas with high solar availability also show larger consumption of water presenting a tradeoff for a future renewable based power system. In addition, design guidelines and surrogate models to estimate water consumption, cooling tower size and its cost as a function of the climate have also been developed. The surrogates are useful for the analysis on the water footprint of a renewable based power system that substitutes the fossil based one.

In the process of urban water resources planning, the demand estimation of urban water consumption is one of the important basic contents. In this paper, a hybrid model of linear estimation model and an exponential estimation model are proposed to forecast the water consumption. The bionic intelligent algorithms are widely used in industrial engineering, so, we use intelligent algorithms to solve the proposed model including Bat Algorithm (BA) and modified Bat Algorithm (FTBA). FTBA improves the global search capability, and the improvements increase the probability of solving the optimal value. In the simulation experiments, we use the data from Nanchang city during 2003 to 2015. The data from 2003 to 2012 are used to find the optimal weights, and the remaining data (2013-2015) are used to test the models. Simulation results show that the modified BA (FTBA) is superior to the standard algorithm and achieves higher accuracy in prediction.

A Review of Landscape Water Requirements Using a Multicomponent Landscape Coefficient

Water requirements of landscapes are highly variable due to the heterogeneous natures of landscapes, vegetation types, influence of buildings, and nutrient and water management. Objectives for water management of landscapes are for general appearance and health rather than for maximum biomass production. A multi-component method developed for the Irrigation Association (IA) and extended from the California WUCOLS procedure is demonstrated in which the landscape coefficient (KL, equivalent to a crop coefficient) is broken down into four components: vegetation type, vegetation density, microclimate, and managed stress. Each of these components can be estimated using readily made descriptions of a landscaped area and management objectives. One form of the KL equation is used to determine target KL that incorporates a target amount of soil water stress to support water conservation and to support water planning studies. A second form of the KL equation can be used to estimate the actual KL occurring under actual water management. The second form is used in studies of water balances and actual water conservation. The general decoupled equation is further expanded to optionally incorporate impacts of evaporation from exposed soil to assess impacts of irrigation frequency on total water consumption. The mathematics for the approach can be incorporated into software applications and smart irrigation controllers to produce improved water consumption estimates for landscape water requirements for use in irrigation scheduling, water requirement planning, and water depletion studies. The simplified procedure for estimating landscape water requirements in ASABE Standard S623 that is complementary to the IA procedure is discussed and compared. Both methods use a vegetation type and density system as the basis for efficiently estimating scientifically accurate landscape water requirements. Keywords: . The effect of irrigation regime on lucerne yield for hay in conditions of unstable wetting

The main objectives of irrigated agriculture are: obtaining the greatest amount of quality products and the preservation of soil fertility. In this case, irrigated crop rotation is one of the factors for the reproduction of soil fertility, favourable phytosanitary conditions in crops and soil protection from erosion. The potential number of lucerne mowing is determined by the thermal resources of the area, and the actual is closely related to the conditions of optimum soil moisture. In the first year 2–4 mowing of lucerne can already be obtained in various areas of the country, over the next two-three years – 4-7 mowing, or 6–10 tons of hay per hectare in the first year and 120–225 centres in the next. Considering the reduction areas of irrigated and drained lands, it becomes relevant to the competent use of the available reclaimed land. The article presents scientifically-based lucerne irrigation regimes that meet the requirements of a plant in water at the lowest cost per unit of production, provides estimated water consumption data and suggests an economical water consumption for obtaining lucerne yield. Considering the irrigation regime of lucerne, the irrigation rate is significant. Since lucerne is a crop with a deeply penetrating root system, watering should be carried out with moistening of the entire root zone. The required amount of water per irrigation depends on the depth of the root system and the water holding capacity of the soil. The study of whether it is possible to obtain the desired effect with smaller irrigation rates is dictated by the increased capabilities of irrigation technology and these issues are presented in the scientific article. The article gives conclusions about the effect of various irrigation regimes on the formation of lucerne yields for hay.
