HF-free low-temperature synthesis of MXene for electrochemical hydrogen production

MXenes [two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal carbides, nitrides and carbonitrides] are gaining significant interest as alternative electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction due to their excellent properties such as high electrical conductivity, large surface area and chemical stability. MXenes are traditionally synthesized using hydrofluoric acid (HF), which raises safety and environmental concerns due to its highly corrosive and toxic nature. HF introduces fluoride functional groups on the surface of MXenes, and these have been reported to have a detrimental effect on electrocatalysis. As a result, there is growing interest in developing MXenes through non-fluoride routes. Here, we report room-temperature, HF-free, wet-chemical synthesis of MXene using a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and chromium chloride. The newly prepared CH-MXenes possess hydrophilic functionalities (-Cl, -OH and =O). Key advantages of the CH route over HF-based synthesis include the elimination of an additional delamination step, the prevention of MXene restacking via chloride functionalities and the consistent production of high-quality 2D MXenes with a reproducible flake size (∼650 nm). These CH-MXenes exhibit a high surface area, excellent conductivity and enhanced chemical stability, making them suitable for various energy and other applications.

Energy-Saving Electrochemical Hydrogen Production via Amorphous CoMoP/NF Bifunctional Catalyst Coupled with HMF Oxidation Reactions in Alkaline Electrolyte.

To improve water splitting efficiency and enhance energy utilization, it is crucial to develop catalysts with excellent activity, long-term stability, and low cost. In this study, we synthesized a three-dimensional nanostructured amorphous CoMoP/NF bifunctional catalyst for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the 5-hydroxymethylfurfural oxidation reaction (HMFOR), using a sacrificial template method. Benefiting from element doping regulation and morphology control, CoMoP/NF exhibited outstanding catalytic activity. Notably, in an electrolytic water system coupled with HER and HMFOR, a cell voltage of only 1.5 V was required at a current density of 20 mA cm-2, approximately 189 mV lower than that of a traditional water electrolysis system. This study presents a novel energy-saving method for hydrogen production through the HER/HMFOR electrolysis system.

Effect of catholyte in a single step electrochemical hydroiodic acid decomposition for hydrogen production using the iodine-sulfur thermochemical cycle.

This study identifies the most suitable catholyte for the electrochemical HI decomposition process, an emerging single-step alternative to the conventional multistep HI section of the I-S thermochemical cycle for hydrogen production. Four catholytes, H2O, H3PO4, H2SO4, and HI, were shortlisted based on compatibility with the I-S cycle and ability to support the hydrogen evolution. Polarization studies in a two-compartment electrochemical cell revealed a similar order of onset potentials for the electrochemical HI decomposition across all four catholyte electrolytes. However, the performance at higher overpotentials following the onset of the electrochemical HI decomposition followed the order H2SO4 > HI > H3PO4 > H2O. The polarization behavior was not found to vary significantly with the catholyte concentration. Model fitting revealed that the invariance in polarization behavior with the catholyte concentration arose from the compensation between the changes in activation overpotentials with the open-circuit voltage. The onset potential was predominantly influenced by the I2/HI ratio in the anolyte, with higher ratios resulting in an increase in the onset potentials for electrochemical HI decomposition. Polarization studies identified H2SO4 and HI as the most promising catholytes for further investigation. Consequently, continuous electrochemical HI decomposition and hydrogen production was demonstrated with H2SO4 and HI as the catholyte for three I2/HI ratios of 0.25, 0.5, and 1 at two different current densities, with an average current efficiency of ∼97%. Among the two acids, H2SO4 showed higher current efficiency and lower energy consumption per mole of hydrogen compared to HI under the similar anolyte configuration and current density.

Structure of Ni(II) Inclusion Complex in Solid/Solution States and the Enhancement of Catalytic Behavior in Electrochemical Hydrogen Production.

In this article, we investigate the encapsulation of K2[Ni(maleonitriledithiolate)2] (1) within a host molecule, β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), via single-crystal X-ray analysis. An inclusion complex, K2{[Ni(maleonitriledithiolate)2]@(β-CD)2} (2), was constructed from 1 and two β-CDs. The anion guest Ni complex included a host cavity, constructed using two β-CDs, and the Ni atom of the anion was located between the two hydrophilic primary rims. Ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy revealed that inclusion complex 2 exhibited a 2:1 (host:guest) stoichiometry in the solution, which is consistent with the result obtained from X-ray crystallography. The association of the host and guest occurred in two steps, and the association constants for the first and second steps were 1.1(7) × 104 and 1.8(5) × 104 mol-1 dm3, respectively. The catalytic behavior of 1 and 2 was investigated for electrochemical hydrogen production in the aqueous solution of an acetate buffer (pH = 4.72). During the catalytic reaction, inclusion complex 2 was observed to have a better catalytic reaction rate than 1. The study findings provide insights into the effects of the encapsulation of guest molecules within host structures.

Boosting Hydrogen Evolution Reaction on Co9S8 in Neutral Media Leveraging Oxophilic CrOx Mosaic Dopant

AbstractThe electrochemical production of sustainable hydrogen under neutral conditions is advantageous, as it allows for the use of wastewater or seawater without the need for pH adjustments. However, the low ion concentration in neutral electrolytes typically results in limited adsorption of reactants on the catalyst surfaces, leading to sluggish reaction kinetics. Therefore, enhancing absorption capacity is a key challenge in the development of neutral hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts. Hetero‐structured catalysts may improve surface adsorption through extensive interfacing between phases, enabling active transportation of reaction intermediates. Integrating metal sulfides and oxides, in particular, holds the potential for generating efficient electrocatalysts with improved HER activity and surface adsorption capacity. Herein, the synthesis of CrOx‐doped Co9S8/CuCrS2 mosaic hetero‐nanostructures is reported as a proficient HER catalyst. Facile Cr‐cation migration at the Co9S8/CuCrS2 interface enables the preparation of Cr‐oxide sub‐nano domains within the sulfide matrix, boosting the HER catalysis in neutral media. The exceptional electrochemical performance is demonstrated in a pH 7.4 phosphate buffer solution, including low overpotential, small Tafel slope, and stability over 60 h. The formulation of catalyst design and synthetic approaches has the potential to pave the way for diverse catalytic applications utilizing metal oxide‐doped hetero‐nanostructures.

Graphene oxide from biomass waste: A pathway to electrochemical hydrogen production and capacitive applications

In the pursuit of sustainable energy, hydrogen stands out as a promising alternative to fossil fuels due to its clean and efficient energy properties. This study investigates a novel approach to synthesize graphene oxide (GO) from biomass waste for sustainable hydrogen production. Three biomass sources - walnut shells, peanut shells, and parthenium hysterophorus - were used to produce GO, which was then used as electrode material in electrochemical hydrogen evolution reactions (HER). The highest yield of GO was obtained for the walnut shells (20 %). It demonstrated the best electrocatalytic performance, achieving a current density of −29.32 mA/cm2 at −0.82 V, surpassing GO obtained from peanut shells and parthenium hysterophorus. A detailed structural and electrochemical analysis revealed a low Tafel slope (163.06 mV/decade), a high electrochemical surface area (25.0), and an onset potential of −0.68 V for walnut shell-derived GO. This novel use of biomass offers a renewable and affordable resource.

A Single Chamber Urea/Persulfate Fuel Cell: Optimization of Cathode to Use Peroxydisulfate Electron Acceptor

Environmental and energy issues draw considerable attentions in the modern society. One of the options to simultaneously solve these issues can be a wastewater fuel cell to recover energy during wastewater treatment. The urea oxidation reaction (UOR) has been tackled to enhance the energy efficiency of electrochemical hydrogen production and/or fuel cell utilizing urea, an abundant nitrogenous pollutant in human (livestock) wastes, as an electron donor. In spite of the significant progresses on a direct urea fuel cell (DUFC), various problems were reported for real wastewater, in relation to the membrane fouling to hamper practical applications from urine. To this end, this study proposes a single chamber DUFC employing Ni-Cl as an anode, CuO/CN as a cathode, and peroxydisulfate (PDS) as an electron accepter. An ideal utilization of PDS should increase the open circuit voltage than O2, while catalytically activated PDS can eliminate aqueous pollutants (including urea) for urine treatment. The Ni-Cl anode was prepared by a simple HCl etching of Ni foam, enhancing the UOR activity compared to the mother foam. The CuO/CN cathode was prepared by a sequential electrodeposition and hydrothermal treatment. This presentation focuses on an enhanced catalytic activity of direct/indirect PDS reduction on the Ni-Cl and CuO/CN, as confirmed by cyclic voltammetry and constant load discharge of a single chamber urea/PDS fuel cell. In particular, this study interrogated the mechanism of urea oxidation in the single-chamber DUFC in comparison with a chemical PDS activation system. A proto-type single chamber fuel cell marked a maximum power density of 1.8 mW cm-2 with 0.3 M urea, to open a new era of urine fuel cell without usage of membrane and precious element catalysts.

Energy-saving electrochemical green hydrogen production coupled with persulfate or hydrogen peroxide valorization at boron-doped diamond electrodes

Persulfate (S2O82−) and hydrogen (H2) electrosynthesis has gained prominence valorization in recent times. This study reports, for the first time, a techno-economic analysis of the electrochemical boron-doped diamond (BDD)-SO42−/SO4•−/S2O82−/H2O2||H2 system. BDD is an eco-friendly material for S2O82− and H2 formation, where S2O82− is economically attractive replacements for oxygen reaction in electrochemical H2 production to valorize it as an integrated-hybrid approach. The results clearly showed that current efficiencies of up to 75.3 % and 99.4 % at 45 mA cm−2 were observed for S2O82− and H2 production with anodic accumulation of 1.77 mmol L−1 and cathodic rate 0.3 µmol min−1, respectively. A techno-economic estimation indicated a significant levelized cost of H2 (∼$ 3.78 kg−1) for this hybrid-integrated process where it was improved decreasing the anode cost or increasing the current density (j). BDD||Ni-Fe based stainless-steel (SS) mesh system could be more appropriate to be commercialized for producing persulfate and green H2, according to the techno-economic analysis. This electrochemical strategy described here is a promising green alternative to conventional processes for the simultaneous electrogeneration of oxidants and green H2, both as high value-added products.

Utilizing electrooxidation for textile effluent wastewater treatment and simultaneous electrocatalytic hydrogen production: Transforming waste into energy and promoting water reuse in a circular economy context

Textile effluent wastewater poses a serious environmental risk because of its high concentration of pollutants, which include organic compounds, heavy metals, and dyes. The present study investigates the technical and economic feasibility of hybrid water electrolysis performances. Specifically, real textile effluent wastewater was utilised to examine simultaneous abatement and electrochemical hydrogen production. The treated water can be recycled in the textile mill, offering the benefits of trash-to-treasure and cost savings through the circular economy. In addition to reducing the environmental impact of textile wastewater, the synergistic approach seeks to maximise its potential for producing hydrogen as clean energy. Here, the commercially available stainless sheet was used as the anode in the electrochemical setup system and the two-dimensional Ti3C2TX MXene was used as the catalyst embedded cathode. The optimal electrode-electrolyte parameter settings resulted in an 83 % decrease in COD level and a degradation efficiency of about 88 %. The potential for widespread adoption in the textile industry is highlighted by the discussion of the economic viability and environmental advantages of using wastewater from textile effluents for pollutant degradation and hydrogen production. Hence, the energy estimation was looked at and estimated in order to evaluate the process viability. For instance, the hybrid electrolysis process uses a very small amount of electricity (0.825 kWh m−3 order−1) and has an apparent operating current (30 mA/cm2). This work could serve as a guide for the methodical assessment and choice of hybrid water electrolysis using actual wastewater. The electrode's recyclability and reuse were proven for possible commercial applications. The stability of the Ti3C2TX electrode over a wide pH range was investigated in order to produce hydrogen on a big scale at a reasonable cost.

Nickel Hydroxysulfide Electrocatalyst Promotes Urea Oxidation for Energy‐Saving Hydrogen Production

AbstractThe occurrence of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) almost consumes most of the electric energy of hydrogen production by electrocatalytic water splitting. The energy required in the process of electrochemical hydrogen production can be reduced by choosing urea oxidation reaction (UOR) instead of OER. In this work, nickel hydroxysulfide is synthesized on nickel foam (NiSOH/NF) and its electrocatalytic performance was tested in UOR. Experimental results show that the vulcanization catalyst requires a low potential of 1.38 V (vs RHE) to achieve a current density of 100 mA cm−2 in an electrolyte containing 0.5 M urea, which is 270 mV lower than the conventional OER process. This innovative approach has yielded a substantial reduction in the cell voltage necessary for overall water splitting under two electrode system, thereby enhancing its efficiency and feasibility.

Cross‐Scale Process Intensification of Spindle CuO Supported Tungsten Single‐Atom Catalysts toward Enhanced Electrochemical Hydrogen Production

AbstractProcess intensification engineering of electrocatalysts is crucial to facilitate electrocatalytic reaction, while its cross‐scale modulation is of great challenge. Herein, the spindle CuO supported tungsten single‐atom catalysts (W SACs) with tunable mesoscale electric field and atomic‐scale coordination structure are reported toward enhanced electrochemical hydrogen evolution process. Finite element analysis indicates the mesoscale electric field can be enhanced by tailoring the tip angle of spindle configuration from 74° to 27°, enhancing hydrogen production rate by 5 times. Based on the density functional theory calculations, the configuration regulation also triggers the increase of coordination number of W–O, which increases charge transfer and downshifts d‐band center, stabilizing W sites and optimizing hydrogen desorption process. The optimized WSA/CuO‐27 exhibits much better hydrogen evolution activity (η100 = 94 mV) and stability (200 mA cm−2 for 120 h) than as‐prepared WSA/CuO‐56 and WSA/CuO‐74 analogues. Impressively, the anion exchange membrane electrolyzer fabricated with the WSA/CuO‐27 presents excellent activity comparable to that of commercial electrocatalysts, and also delivers an ultra‐low attenuation of 0.085 mA cm−2 h−1 at 300 mA cm−2 after continuous electrocatalysis for 120 h. This work inspires the design of high‐efficiency supported metal catalysts for electrochemical synthesis via the cross‐scale process intensification engineering.

Uniform carbon pillars array grown on boron doped diamond for high-performance supercapacitors and hydrogen evolution reactions

Carbon materials have marvelous ability in energy storage and microelectronics as a result of the high specific surface area and electrical conductivity. However, the low stability and the low power density caused by low potential window make it particularly difficult for their application in aqueous electrolysis. In this study, boron doped diamond (BDD) with wide potential window is used as substrate and Ni as catalyst to grow uniform carbon pillars (CP) by microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition method. The composite structure (CP/BDD) yields significant specific capacity (91.64 mF cm−2 at 0.1 mA cm−2) and cycling stability (92.3 % retention rate after 20,000 cycles) when used as the electrode of supercapacitors, superior to most of BDD-based electrodes. The prepared symmetrical supercapacitor devices maintain their excellent electrochemical performance characteristics (power density of 4.4 mW cm−2 and energy density of 13.4 μW h cm−2), as well as high cycling stability. In addition, the electrode has considerable application potential in electrochemical hydrogen production with low hydrogen evolution potential and small Tafel slope value. These results illustrate the potential of BDD based composites for using as energy storage electrodes for electronic products and energy conversion equipment.

Metal Organic Frameworks‐Derived NiO/NiCo2O4 Heterostructures for Effective Methanol Oxidation Reaction

AbstractThe electrochemical process of methanol oxidation reaction (MOR), which is closely associated with electrochemical production of formate and hydrogen, is considered a highly viable avenue for advancing renewable energy technologies. Nevertheless, the development and creation of affordable, effective, and durable electrocatalysts for MOR continue to present significant obstacles. In this study, a hierarchical porous NiO/NiCo2O4/NF electrode is fabricated through the integration of solvothermal and thermal oxidation treatments of Ni‐MOF‐74 and NiCo‐Asp. After thoroughly assessing the electrochemical performance for MOR, NiO/NiCo2O4/NF demonstrates a significant current density of 140 mA cm−2 at 1.6 V (vs. RHE) and a tafel slop of 45.0 mV·dec−1 in 1 M KOH and 0.5 M methanol. The excellent performance of MOR can be ascribed to the hierarchical porous nature that enhances mass and electron transport while offering numerous active sites for electrocatalytic reactions. Additionally, the hetero interface between NiO and NiCo2O4 could further enhance electron transfer rate and reaction kinetics for the MOR. The developed NiO/NiCo2O4/NF electrode shows potential as a viable and economical alternative to Pt‐based electrocatalysts for MOR‐based applications.

Electrochemical hydrogen production of SS, Ni, and Ni-B electrodes in prototype electrolyzer system

Highly efficient, low-cost, and stable electrocatalysts are crucial in electrocatalytic water splitting. Herein, the comparative study of stainless steel (SS), a Nickel (Ni/SS), and Nickel boride (Ni-B/SS) electrode for hydrogen production was carried out under a prototype electrolyzer system. The Ni/SS and Ni-B/SS were synthesized by a simple and low-cost chemical method on the SS substrate. As compared to SS and Ni/SS electrodes, the Ni-B/SS electrode demonstrates superior electrochemical activity towards the Hydrogen Evolution reaction (HER) with a low overpotential of 75 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm2 and Tafel slope of 82 mV/dec in 1M KOH electrolyte. The as-fabricated Ni-B/SS electrode showed cauliflower-like morphology and exhibited an excellent hydrogen production rate such as 4.39 ml/min on a (2 cm x 2 cm) electrode at a constant potential of 2.2 V in a prototype electrochemical hydrogen production setup. The stability of the Ni-B/SS (6 cm x 6 cm) electrode was also checked on a large-scale prototype electrolyzer setup for 50 hr at a constant potential.

Disentangling the catalytic origin in defect engineered 2D NiCoMoS@Ni(CN)2 core-shell heterostructure for energy-saving hydrazine-assisted water oxidation

The major hindrance to efficient electrocatalytic hydrogen generation from water electrolysis is the sluggish kinetics with corresponding large overvoltage of oxygen evolution reaction. Herein, we report a defective 2D NiCoMoS@Ni(CN)2 core-shell heterostructure derived from Hofmann-type MOF as an efficient and durable high-performance noble metal-free electrocatalyst for hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR) in alkaline media. The sluggish oxygen evolution reaction was replaced with a more thermodynamically favourable HzOR, enabling energy-saving electrochemical hydrogen production with 2D NiCoMoS@Ni(CN)2 acting as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for anodic HzOR and cathodic hydrogen generation. Operating at room temperature, the two-electrode electrolyzer delivers 100 mA cm−2 from a cell voltage of just 257 mV, with strong long-term electrochemical durability and nearly 100% Faradaic efficiency for hydrogen evolution in 1.0 M KOH aqueous solution with 0.5 M hydrazine. The density functional theory (DFT) was employed to investigate the origin of catalytic performance and showed that high vacancy creation within the heterointerface endowed NiCoMoS@Ni(CN)2 with favourable functionalities for excellent catalytic performance.

Bioinspired Proton Pump on Ferroelectric HfO2-Coupled Ir Catalysts with Bidirectional Hydrogen Spillover for pH-Universal and Superior Hydrogen Production.

The improvement of hydrogen evolution reaction kinetics can be largely accelerated by introducing a well-designed hydrogen spillover pathway into the catalysts. However, the driving force and mechanism of hydrogen migration on the surface of catalysts are poorly understood and are rarely explored in depth. Here, inspired by the specific ferroelectric property of HfO2, Mn-O-Ca sites in Mn4CaO5, and Fe-Fe sites in hydrogenases, we constructed a bioinspired HfO2 coupled with Ir catalysts (Ir/HfO2@C) with an alkaline hydrogen reverse spillover effect from HfO2 to interface and acid hydrogen spillover effect from Ir to interface. Benefiting from the bidirectional hydrogen spillover pathways controlled by pH, Ir/HfO2@C displays a narrow overpotential difference between acidic and alkaline electrolytes. Remarkably, Ir/HfO2@C shows a remarkable mass current density and turnover frequency value, far exceeding the benchmark Ir/C by 20.6 times. More importantly, this Ir/HfO2@C achieves extraordinarily low overpotentials of 146 and 39 mV at 10 mV cm-2 in seawater and alkaline seawater, respectively. The anion-exchange membrane water electrolyzer equipped with Ir/HfO2@C as a cathode exhibits excellent and stable H2-evolution performance on 2.22 V at 1.0 A cm-2. We expect that the bioinspired strategy will provide a new concept for designing catalytic materials for efficient and pH-universal electrochemical hydrogen production.

(Invited) Impact of Cell Performance and Degradation on the Levelized Cost of Hydrogen

For electrochemical production of hydrogen to be industrially relevant it must be economically viable. As such, it is important that a reasonable understanding of the entire breadth of cost components which make up the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) should be obtained. While a precise and detailed understanding may be impossible due to costing uncertainty and a constantly changing basis, a general idea is necessary to determine the most impactful research topics. This work seeks to elucidate the impacts of cell performance on the LCOH in comparison to other aspects such as feedstock costs, capital equipment cost, and fixed business costs. Based on initial analysis it appears a doubling of current density at thermal neutral conditions, a substantial materials achievement, may reduce the LCOH by less than 5%. This infers that while improving cell performance will reduce the LCOH, it may not provide the highest return on engineering and scientific investigation.

Catalytic Activities of Ir-Based Pyrochlore-Type Oxides Doped with Divalent Cations for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Alternative energy sources to fossil fuels are essential for a sustainable society, and hydrogen energy is expected to be a solution to environmental and energy problems. Currently, proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers are becoming widely used for the electrochemical production of hydrogen due to their advantages such as high efficiency. However, the highly acidic conditions and the large overpotentials of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the anode are problems, and the development of catalysts that are stable and highly active in acidic aqueous solutions is important for further popularization.Ir-based oxides with pyrochlore structure (A2B2O7) are known to exhibit high catalytic activities in acidic aqueous solutions. Recently, it has been reported that the improved catalytic activities of Pr2Ir2O7 by Zn doping, which controlled the composition of A-site elements in the pyrochlore structure [1]. In this study, we synthesized Pr2-x MgxIr2O7 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5), in which a part of trivalent cation Pr3+ was replaced by divalent cation Mg2+ and improved the OER catalytic activity in acidic aqueous solutions.Pr2-x MgxIr2O7 was synthesized by the hydrothermal method. The catalyst was mixed with a conductivity aid carbon (Vulcan XC-72) and a cationic conductive ionomer (Nafion) at a weight ratio of 5:1:1 and dispersed in 2-propanol to form a catalyst ink. The catalytic activity was evaluated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) using a glassy carbon rotating disk electrode (RDE) as a working electrode, a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) as a reference electrode, and a platinum wire as a counter electrode. The electrolyte was a 0.1 mol dm-3 HClO4 solution saturated with oxygen, and the CV scanning range was 1.1 to 1.7 V with respect to the RHE, scanning speed was 20 mV s-1, and the RDE rotation speed was 1200 rpm. The stability of the catalyst in acidic aqueous solutions was evaluated by chronopotentiometry (CP) using the same cell.X-ray diffraction and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis measurements of the synthesized materials confirmed that the desired compounds were obtained, and CV measurements showed that the OER activity of Pr2-x MgxIr2O7 increased in the first 20 cycles for all compositions, and then stabilized over several tens of cycles. The cycle change was similar to that of Pr2Ir2O7, suggesting that the surface rearrangement proceeds in acidic aqueous solutions [2]. Linear sweep voltammogram (LSV) and OER activity normalized by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area were measured at the 20th cycle, and the catalytic activity stabilized at a high value.
