A Holistic, Interdisciplinary and Socially Engaged Approach to Translator Education

In the face of the contemporary market for translation services, it is becoming increasingly apparent that translation pedagogy should holistically embrace the teaching and learning process by integrating as many in- and out-of-classroom activities as possible into the real-life experience of students, thus leading them to acquire broadly defined skills and competences that are vital in the translation profession (cf. EMT Competence Framework 2022). A holistic approach to translation teaching and learning may be also reflected in an attempt to reconcile the two extremes of ‘creativity’ and ‘automaticity’ in translation, i.e., the creative contribution of the translator as an intermediary in intercultural communication on the one hand, and the requirement to know and use the latest technologies (CAT tools, machine translation, terminology databases, etc.), on the other hand. A holistic approach may also be associated with socially engaged pedagogy and the application of Project Based Learning (PBL), based on constructivist premises that we acquire knowledge by participating in intersubjective interactions. The paper attempts to show how translation teachers may holistically respond to the above-mentioned needs by using PBL methods and socially relevant interdisciplinary content in their teaching of the art and craft of translation.

The craft of translation: documentary practices within immigration advocacy in the United States

AbstractThis article builds on anthropological research on bureaucratic inscription as a power‐laden process to explore the craft of document translation in contexts of immigration legal advocacy. In a legal climate characterized by suspicion and resource scarcity, immigrants who seek to regularize their status in the United States face steep evidentiary challenges, including the requirement that all documentation, including records from their countries of origin, letters of support from friends and family, and their own affidavits, must be translated into English. Approaching immigration document translation ethnographically and drawing on multi‐year fieldwork in a nonprofit providing legal services to low‐income, Spanish‐speaking immigrants, this article focuses on translation as neither straightforward and mechanical nor as impossibly complex but rather as a craft that involves exercising discretion. Practicing this craft with care is one way to counter the otherwise alienating and state‐centric nature of bureaucratic inscription.

The proposed material presents a translation of the short story “Space Mountain” by the contemporary Irish author Rory Gleeson. The works of the young writer have already been noted by academics and theater critics, arouse interest among a wide readership in the UK, but have not yet been translated into Russian. The translation of the story was made by the winner of the international competition “ Art & Craft of Translation”, which was held in 2020. The text is accompanied by a short commentary.

El arte de la traducción en el Humanismo renacentista español

El artículo presenta la visión y perspectiva que sobre la traducción tenía la llamada corriente Humanismo renacentista español, bien representada, entre otros, por Nebrija, Juan Luis Vives, Juan de Valdés y Fray Luis de León, principalmente, así como por Bernardo Pérez de Chinchón y Alonso Ruiz de Virués, por su significativa obra en este campo. La obra traductora de todos ellos tiene en común el haber entendido que el oficio de la traducción no conlleva un servilismo literal sino que requiere una tarea de interpretación del texto a verter. El interés adicional que encontramos al examinar las contribuciones que al arte de la traducción tuvieron lugar en este periodo es ver cómo éstas ayudaron a desarrollar en el tiempo la lengua castellana a través de las diversas obras que fueron objeto de traducción por parte de los humanistas españoles.

Translation Spells: From Shakespeare's Page to the Tourist Stage

ABSTRACTThis paper explores ways in which the craft of translation becomes the Kraft of tourist visits. It examines popular artefacts, from German guidebooks to Scotland and amateur performances of Macbeth in German dialect, to educational resources. Through these everyday cultural artefacts, translation casts a long spell on the imagination of German tourists. Translation plays at the interface between performance and writing, spelling out in literary form that which in tourism is enacted and enfleshed. It is for such reasons of doubling that translators have long been compared to magicians and tricksters, and ascribed powers similar to those found in witchcraft.

The Craft of Translation

Best-selling author Malcolm Gladwell talks about how he “simplifies and synthesizes” research in his books and articles with the goal of getting readers excited about the “academic study of ideas.” The self-described “conversation starter” gives a glimpse into how he puts together his articles and where his ideas emerge. The reader learns about Gladwell's relationship with academia, which he sees as an “important cog in the process” of disseminating research to a wider audience. Gladwell illuminates the power of narratives in presenting complex ideas. He also shares what he would like to teach and research at a business school, if given the opportunity. Finally, Gladwell's thoughts raise key questions to consider about the role and responsibility of scholars in translating research to audiences outside of the academy.

On Translation: Reflections and Conversations (review)

Edmund Keeley's On Translation: Reflections and Conversations is a selection of four essays and five interviews, spanning the years 1972 to 1995. The publication date of 2000 commemorates Keeley's fiftieth anniversary as a translator—since, as the author tells us, he began his career almost by accident in 1950 while writing his dissertation on Modern Greek poetry at Oxford and needed sample texts for readers who knew no Greek. The selections, involved with the "craft and commerce" of translation, generally stand in their original form, with updates to reflect recent developments or to bolster an argument. Nevertheless, Keeley points out "the relative consistency of [his] attitude toward the craft of translation and even of what in [his] case are its primary subject, the poets of Modern Greece" (x). It is not surprising, therefore, that a number of themes emerge in the course of the volume's lively mix of biographical details from Keeley's experience as a teacher (primarily at Princeton) and as an activist in translation issues (with the Translation Committee of the PEN American Center and with the American Literary Translators Association). Most important, On Translation offers Keeley's insights about poets who, mainly through his own efforts, have come to represent Modern Greece to the outside world—insights that only the "quotidian" but sometimes "inspired" (Keeley's own terms) process of translation could provide.

Dreaming and the impossible art of translation.

This essay identifies translation both as an historically core metaphor in Euro-American dream theory and as a contemporary ally for dream teaching and research. It also traces the mutuality of translators' reliance on Freud, Jung, and other dream theorists in their metaphorical expression of the art and craft of translation. The sustained interaction of oneiric and linguistic metaphor-making stems from the fact that virtually all of our knowledge about dreams has been mediated through language and that all dream reporting is itself an act of intersemiotic translation. In an attempt to stimulate further comparative inquiry, the overlapping concerns and often uncanny affinities between language/translation studies and dream/interpretation studies are presented.

The Craft of Translation

Written by some of the most distinguished literary translators working in English today, these essays offer new and uncommon insights into the understanding and craft of translation. The contributors not only describe the complexity of translating literature but also suggest the implications of the act of translation for critics, scholars, teachers, and students. The demands of translation, according to these writers, require both comprehensive scholarship in preparing to translate a text and broad creativity in recreating the text in a new language. Translation, thus, becomes a model for the most exacting reading and the most serious scholarship. or some two thousand years translation has been the F object of solicitous interest from writers, scholars and philosophers. The art and craft of translation was of particular interest to writers such as Cicero, Horace, John Dryden, Alexander Pope and Matthew Arnold. At the beginning of the twentieth century Ezra Pound revitalized the interest in transplanting texts from various cultures, past and present, into English. On the whole, however, translation of foreign literatures into English has always taken a second place in the field of American letters. Even today the statistics are slightly disturbing when compared with some other countries in the Western world. Germany publishes between seven and eight thousand books in translation from other literatures each year. France can show a similar statistical record. The United States hardly reaches fifteen hundred book translations per year.’ The figures indicate an alarming discrepancy, especially if one considers the geographical and demographic differences between the United States and countries such as Germany or France. It would be difficult to point to a very simple reason for the translation imbalance that exists between the United States and most European countries. We just don’t know enough about the mechanisms of cross-cultural communication, especially in the field of literature. Many translation projects happen by chance. Richard Wilbur began translating because Andre du Bouchet, the French poet, happened to be a fellow graduate student at Harvard. Ben Belitt, who through Wallace Fowlie was introduced to the early modern French poets-in particular Rimbaud-perceived translation as a challenge to please his language informant. Many of the other American poet-translators have similar stories to tell.* Another look at translation statistics reveals a disquieting fact: the lag time between the publication of a book in the original language and its appearance in English translation is between seven and ten years. Whether this situation will undergo a rapid change in the near future is doubtful, although activities in the art and craft of translation have seen a tremendous upswing in the last ten years in this country through the founding of the American Literary Translators Association in 1978 and the publication of Translation Review, a journal that is dedicated to all aspects of literary translation.3 Even though Ezra Pound revived interest in the art of translation in the first decades of this century, it was not
