The article analyzes the influence of the Soviet-communist ideological legacy on the civilizational choice of Ukraine in the 1990s, a period when the country was undergoing transformation after gaining independence. The author considers how Soviet values, traditions and socio-economic models influenced the formation of new political and cultural identities. Key aspects are examined, in particular, the preservation of elements of the Soviet system in governance, economy and public life, as well as their impact on public consciousness.
