Influence of the bis-carbene ligand on manganese catalysts for CO2 electroreduction.

First row transition metal complexes have attracted attention as abundant and affordable electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction. Manganese complexes bearing bis-N-heterocyclic carbene ligands defining 6-membered ring metallacycles have proven to reduce CO2 to CO selectively at very high rates. Herein, we report the synthesis of manganese carbonyl complexes supported by a rigid ortho-phenylene bridged bis-N-heterocyclic carbene ligand (orthophenylene-bis(N-methylimidazol-2-ylidene, Ph-bis-mim), which defines a 7-membered ring metallacycle. We performed a comparative study with the analogues bearing an ethylene-bis(Nmethylimidazol-2-ylidene ligand (C2H4-bis-mim) and a methylenebis(N-methylimidazol-2-ylidene ligand (CH2-bis-mim) and found that catalysts comprising a seven-membered metallacycle retain similar selectivity and high activity as those with six-membered metallacycles, while reducing the overpotential by 120-190 mV. This study reveals general design principles for manganese bis-N-heterocyclic carbene electrocatalysts which can guide further designs of affordable, fast and low overpotential catalysts for CO2 electroreduction.

Oxygen functionalized diamond nanocone arrays coupling cobalt phthalocyanine for enhanced electrochemical CO2 reduction

The development of high-efficiency catalysts plays a crucial role in advancing CO2 electroreduction techniques. Among potential candidates, diamond-based electrocatalysts show promise due to their broad electrochemical windows, which effectively suppress competitive hydrogen evolution and ensure high CO2 reduction efficiency. In this study, we report an integrated electrode composed of oxygen-terminated diamond nanocone (ODcone) with CoPc-molecules anchoring (CoPc/ODcone). The CoPc/ODcone electrodes exhibited remarkable performance, achieving a maximum Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 94.1% for CO at −0.97 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), and maintaining an FECO higher than 80% over a wide potential range of −0.67 V to −1.07 V vs RHE. The outstanding performance of the CoPc/ODcone electrode can be attributed to the synergistic effects between the nanostructured diamond surface and the CoPc catalyst. The hydroxyl-rich nature of the diamond surface facilitates the anchoring of CoPc molecules and bonding with Co atoms in CoPc. Simultaneously, the nanostructured diamond with sharp tips enhances CO2 adsorption, thereby improving the catalyst's performance. This study provides valuable insights into the utilization of non-metallic carbon materials, particularly diamond, as metal-free catalysts in CO2 electrochemical reduction and tackles challenges such as low current density and poor Faradaic efficiency, thus contributing to the advancement of more effective catalysts for CO2 electroreduction.

2+1] Cycloadditions Modulate the Hydrophobicity of Ni-N4 Single-Atom Catalysts for Efficient CO2 Electroreduction.

Microenvironment regulation of M-N4 single-atom catalysts (SACs) is a promising way to tune their catalytic properties toward the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction. However, strategies that can effectively introduce functional groups around the M-N4 sites through strong covalent bonding and under mild reaction conditions are highly desired. Taking the hydrophilic Ni-N4 SAC as a representative, we report herein a [2+1] cycloaddition reaction between Ni-N4 and in-situ generated difluorocarbene (F2C:), and enable the surface fluorocarbonation of Ni-N4, resulting in the formation of a super-hydrophobic Ni-N4-CF2 catalyst. Meanwhile, the mild reaction conditions allow Ni-N4-CF2 to inherit both the electronic and structural configuration of the Ni-N4 sites from Ni-N4. Enhanced electrochemical CO2-to-CO Faradaic efficiency above 98% is achieved in a wide operating potential window from -0.7 V to -1.3 V over Ni-N4-CF2. In-situ spectroelectrochemical studies reveal that a highly hydrophobic microenvironment formed by the -CF2- group repels asymmetric H-bonded water at the electrified interface, inhibiting the hydrogen evolution reaction and promoting CO production. This work highlights the advantages of [2+1] cycloaddition reactions on the covalent modification of N-doped carbon-supported catalysts.

Promoting CO Electroreduction to C2+ Oxygenates by Distribution of Water Dissociation Sites.

The electrocatalytic CO2 or CO reduction reaction is a complex proton-coupled electron transfer reaction, in which protons in the electrolyte have a critical effect on the surface adsorbed *H species and the multi-carbon oxygenate products such as ethanol. However, the coupling of *H and carbon-containing intermediates into C2+ oxygenates can be severely hampered by the inappropriate distributions of those species in the catalytic interfaces. In this work, the controlled distribution of highly dispersed CeOx nanoclusters is demonstrated on Cu nanosheets as an efficient CO electroreduction catalyst, with Faradaic efficiencies of ethanol and total oxygenates of 35% and 58%, respectively. The CeOx nanoclusters (2-5 nm) enabled efficient water dissociation and appropriate distribution of adsorbed *H species on the Cu surface with carbon-containing species, thus facilitating the generation of C2+ oxygenate products. In contrast, pristine Cu without CeOx tended to form ethylene, while the aggregated CeOx nanoparticles promoted the surface density of *H and subsequent H2 evolution.

Regulating the Critical Intermediates of Dual-Atom Catalysts for CO2 Electroreduction.

Electrocatalysis is a very attractive way to achieve a sustainable carbon cycle by converting CO2 into organic fuels and feedstocks. Therefore, it is crucial to design advanced electrocatalysts by understanding the reaction mechanism of electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (eCO2RR) with multiple electron transfers. Among electrocatalysts, dual-atom catalysts (DACs) are promising candidates due to their distinct electronic structures and extremely high atomic utilization efficiency. Herein, the eCO2RR mechanism and the identification of intermediates using advanced characterization techniques, with a particular focus on regulating the critical intermediates are systematically summarized. Further, the insightful understanding of the functionality of DACs originates from the variable metrics of electronic structures including orbital structure, charge distribution, and electron spin state, which influences the active sites and critical intermediates in eCO2RR processes. Based on the intrinsic relationship between variable metrics and critical intermediates, the optimized strategies of DACs are summarized containing the participation of synergistic atoms, engineering of the atomic coordination environment, regulation of the diversity of central metal atoms, and modulation of metal-support interaction. Finally, the challenges and future opportunities of atomically dispersed catalysts for eCO2RR processes are discussed.

Copper/Polyaniline Interfaces Confined CO2 Electroreduction for Selective Hydrocarbon Production.

Polyaniline (PANI) provides an attractive organic platform for CO2 electrochemical reduction due to the ability to adsorb CO2 molecules and in providing means to interact with metal nanostructures. In this work, a novel PANI supported copper catalyst has been developed by coupling the interfacial polymerization of PANI and Cu. The hybrid catalyst demonstrates excellent activity towards production of hydrocarbon products including CH4 and C2H4, compared with the use of bare Cu. A Faradaic efficiency of 71.8 % and a current density of 16.9 mA/cm2 were achieved at -0.86 V vs. RHE, in contrast to only 22.2 % and 1.0 mA/cm2 from the counterpart Cu catalysts. The remarkably enhanced catalytic performance of the hybrid PANI/Cu catalyst can be attributed to the synergistic interaction between the PANI underlayer and copper. The PANI favours the adsorption and binding of CO2 molecules via its nitrogen sites to form *CO intermediates, while the Cu/PANI interfaces confine the diffusion or desorption of the *CO intermediates favouring their further hydrogenation or carbon-carbon coupling to form hydrocarbon products. This work provides insights into the formation of hydrocarbon products on PANI-modified Cu catalysts, which may guide the development of conducting polymer-metal catalysts for CO2 electroreduction.

Single-Atom Substituents in Copper Surfaces May Adsorb Multiple CO Molecules.

Copper is a good CO2 electroreduction catalyst as products beyond CO form, but efficiency and selectivity is low. Experiments have shown that an admixture of other elements can help, and computational screening studies have pointed out various promising candidates based on the adsorption of a single CO molecule as a descriptor. Our calculations of CO adsorption on surfaces where a first row transition metal atom replaces a Cu atom show that multiple CO molecules, not just one, bind to the substitutional atom. For Fe, Co, and Ni atoms, a decrease in binding energy is found, but the reverse trend, namely, increasing bond strength, is found for V, Cr, and Mn and the first three CO molecules. Magnetic moment, charge, and position of the substitutional atom are also strongly affected by the CO adsorption in most cases. Magnetic moment is stepwise reduced to zero, and the outward displacement of the substitutional atom increased.

In this study, the highly dispersed Pd atoms have two unique functions: active sites for water dissociation and to induce the electron rearrangement of the surrounding Cu atoms to form new active sites for CO conversion, while the Cu far from Pd are the active sites for efficient CO2 conversion to CO, the synergistic functions of these three active sites result in high FE and yields of C2+ products at industrial-level current density. This research is a remarkable step forward in the methodology for developing efficient and durable catalysts for CO2 electroreduction and beyond.

Nitrided copper-iron composite oxides derived from layered double hydroxides for enhanced carbon dioxide electroreduction to methane and formic acid

The reduction of carbon dioxide into valuable chemical products is a promising solution to address carbon balance and energy issues. Herein, amorphous nitrided copper-iron oxides are prepared by gas-phase nitriding of CuFe-layered double hydroxide precursors with urea as a nitrogen source. The obtained materials show high activity for CO2 electroreduction to methane and formic acid, achieving a total Faraday efficiency of 74.7% at −0.7 V vs. RHE and exhibiting continuous 10 h durability in the H-cell. The uniformly distributed Cu+ sites act as active sites by losing electrons to activate CO2. During the CO2 electroreduction, CO2 is converted to *COOH via proton-electron coupling; *COOH combines directly with a proton in solution to produce the HCOOH product; and the other part of *COOH undergoes a protonated dehydration process to form the *CHO intermediate, which dehydrates again to form CH4. This study provides a new approach for designing CO2 electroreduction catalysts.

Nature of C-C coupling and strategy of tuning the catalytic activity of Cu-N-C catalysts for electro-reduction of CO2 to ethanol

With high atomic utilization and remarkable catalytic activity, Cu-N-C type catalysts display great potential for electro-catalysis in CO2 reduction. However, the relationship between the active moiety and catalytic activity of generating high-value C2 products is still unclear, and the explicit screening criteria is scarcity. Herein, based on the first-principle simulation, the structure-performance relationship on Cu-N-C type catalysts has been investigated by modulating the CO2 reduction process as the number of Cu atom (Cu1, Cu2, Cu3) and the ligand environment (B, C, N, O, P, S) changed. We find the adsorption strength of intermediate *CO strongly affect the possibility of C-C coupling, which can be determined by Bader charge on Cu atom, mainly depending on the number of loaded atomic Cu on Cu-N-C catalysts. Furthermore, the Bader charge can be refined by adjusting the coordination atom of Cu, thus optimizing catalytic activity for the CO2 to ethanol. The moderate Bader charge value, between +0.35 and +0.45, enables the catalyst to behave as a potentially excellent activity with low limiting potential for generating ethanol. More importantly, an intrinsic descriptor, composed of the radius, electronegativity, and number of valence electrons of coordination atoms (φ=∑χ∑r*∑np), was established to characterize the catalytic activity of Cu-N(X)-C catalysts for producing ethanol. Two excellent catalysts, Cu3-N2O2 (-0.51 V) and Cu3-N3S (-0.64 V), are screened out for the CO2RR to generate ethanol. This work discloses theoretical basis for catalytic selectivity of C2 products on Cu-N-C catalysts and provides a regulating and screening principle for high performance catalysts to ethanol.

Stepwise structural evolution toward robust carboranealkynyl-protected copper nanocluster catalysts for nitrate electroreduction.

Atomically precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) are emerging as idealized model catalysts for imprecise metal nanoparticles to unveil their structure-activity relationship. However, the directional synthesis of robust metal NCs with accessible catalytic active sites remains a great challenge. In this work, we achieved bulky carboranealkynyl-protected copper NCs, the monomer Cu13·3PF6 and nido-carboranealkynyl bridged dimer Cu26·4PF6, with fair stability as well as accessible open metal sites step by step through external ligand shell modification and metal-core evolution. Both Cu13·3PF6 and Cu26·4PF6 demonstrate remarkable catalytic activity and selectivity in electrocatalytic nitrate (NO3-) reduction to NH3 reaction, with the dimer Cu26·4PF6 displaying superior performance. The mechanism of this catalytic reaction was elucidated through theoretical computations in conjunction with in situ FTIR spectra. This study not only provides strategies for accessing desired copper NC catalysts but also establishes a platform to uncover the structure-activity relationship of copper NCs.

Biomass-based carbon aerogels with interconnected pores and controllable Zn–N sites for CO2 electroreduction

The rational design of renewable, highly active, and selective catalysts has always been the key to the practical application of CO2 electroreduction. In this study, biomass-based Zn/N doped carbon aerogels were fabricated for high-selectivity electrical reduction of CO2 to CO. After in situ Zn/N doping, carbon aerogels exhibited interconnected pores, high surface area, and exposed active sites, and their physicochemical properties are significantly affected by pyrolysis temperature. When the pyrolysis temperature increased to 950 °C, the number of surface active sites and pore structure parameters of carbon aerogels decreased significantly due to the escape of zinc and nitrogen. CAZN-850 exhibited the highest specific surface area of 1317.0 m2/g and abundant Zn–N sites, which results in its high activity and selectivity for electroreduction of CO2 to CO (FECO = 89 % at −1.0V vs. RHE). Moreover, the stability test results for CO2RR showed that the reduction value of FECO for Zn/N doped carbon aerogels was only 5 % under long-time operation. This work provides a new idea for the design of biomass-based catalysts for CO2 electroreduction.

Gray mesoporous SnO2 catalyst for CO2 electroreduction with high partial current density and formate selectivity

The mesoporous metal oxide semiconductors exhibit unique chemical and physical characteristics, making them highly desirable for catalysis, electrochemistry, energy conversion, and energy storage applications. Here, we report the facial fabrication of mesoporous gray SnO2 (MGS) electrocatalysts employing an evaporation-induced co-assembly (EICA) approach, utilizing poly(ethylene oxide)–poly(propylene oxide)–poly(ethylene oxide) triblock copolymers Pluronic P123 (PEO-PPO-PEO) triblock copolymer as a template for electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (eCO2RR). By sustaining the co-assembly conditions and utilizing a thermal treatment technique based on carbon, gray mesoporous SnO2 materials with a high density of active sites and oxygen vacancies can be constructed. The MGS materials were employed in eCO2RR in a flow cell type, which exhibits excellent catalytic activity and selectivity toward formate with a high partial current density of −234 mA cm−2 and Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 93.60 % at −1.3 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Interestingly, the mesoporous SnO2 with a 1.5 wt% ratio of Sn precursor to P123 surfactant (MS-1.5@350N-400A) electrode exhibits a high level of Faradaic efficiency (FE) of (98%) at a low overpotential of −0.6 VRHE, which is a seldom recorded performance for similar systems. A stable FE of 96 ± 1% was observed in the range of −0.6 to −1.2 VRHE, which is the result of a large surface area (184 m2/g) and a high number of active sites and oxygen vacancies within the mesostructured framework.

Effect of Facet on Local Electron Density of Oxygen Vacancy in Catalysts for Nitrogen Electro-Reduction.

Oxygen-vacancy (Ov) engineering is an effective strategy to manipulate the electronic configuration of catalysts for electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (eNRR). The influence of the stable facet on the electronic configuration of Ov is widely studied, however, the effect of the reactive facet on the local electron density of Ov is unveiled. In this work, an eNRR electrode R(111)-TiO2/HGO is provided with a high proportion exposed reactive facet (111) of rutile-TiO2 (denoted as R(111)-TiO2) nanocrystals with Ov anchored in hierarchically porous graphite oxide (HGO) nanofilms. The R(111)-TiO2/HGO exhibits excellent eNRR performance with an NH3 yield rate of 20.68 µg h-1 cm-2, which is ≈20 times the control electrode with the most stable facet (110) exposed (R(110)-TiO2/HGO). The experimental data and theoretical simulations reveal that the crystal facet (111) has a positive effect on regulating the local electron density around the oxygen vacancy and the two adjacent Ti-sites, promoting the π-back-donation, minimizing the eNRR barrier, and transforming the rate determination step to *NNH→*NNHH. This work illuminates the effect of crystal facet on the performance of eNRR, and offers a novel strategy to design efficient eNRR catalysts.

Synergistic Effects of Doping and Strain in Bismuth Catalysts for CO2 Electroreduction.

Doping is a recognized method for enhancing catalytic performance. The introduction of strains is a common consequence of doping, although it is often overlooked. Differentiating the impact of doping and strain on catalytic performance poses a significant challenge. In this study, Cu-doped Bi catalysts with substantial tensile strain are synthesized. The synergistic effects of doping and strain in bismuth result in a remarkable CO2RR performance. Under optimized conditions, Cu1/6-Bi demonstrates exceptional formate Faradaic efficiency (>95%) and maintains over 90% across a wide potential window of 900 mV. Furthermore, it delivers an industrial-relevant partial current density of -317 mA cm-2 at -1.2 VRHE in a flow cell, while maintaining its selectivity. Additionally, it exhibits exceptional long-term stability, surpassing 120 h at -200 mA cm-2. Through experimental and theoretical mechanistic investigations, it has been determined that the introduction of tensile strain facilitates the adsorption of *CO2, thereby enhancing the reaction kinetics. Moreover, the presence of Cu dopants and tensile strain further diminishes the energy barrier for the formation of *OCHO intermediate. This study not only offers valuable insights for the development of effective catalysts for CO2RR through doping, but also establishes correlations between doping, lattice strains, and catalytic properties of bismuth catalysts.

Investigating the interplay between charge transfer and CO2 insertion in the adsorption of a NiFe catalyst for CO2 electroreduction on a graphite support through DFT computational approaches.

This article describes a density functional theory (DFT) study to explore a bio-inspired NiFe complex known for its experimental activity in electro-reducing CO2 to CH4 when adsorbed on graphite. The coordination properties of the complex are investigated in isolated form and when physisorbed on a graphene surface. A comparative analysis of DFT approaches for surface modeling is conducted, utilizing either a finite graphene flake or a periodic carbon surface. Results reveal that the finite model effectively preserves all crucial properties. By examining predicted structures arising from CO2 insertion within the mono-reduced NiFe species, whether isolated or adsorbed on the graphene flake, a potential species for subsequent electro-reduction steps is proposed. Notably, the DFT study highlights two positive effects of complex adsorption: facile electron transfers between graphene and the complex, finely regulated by the complex state, and a lowering of the thermodynamic demand for CO2 insertion.
