The American poet Muriel Rukeyser said, "The universe is made of stories, not of atoms." I've sought stories in biophysics, mostly through theoretical modeling, often through simplified models. My colleagues and I brought polymer statistical physics to help solve the physical protein folding problem. In related questions of water physics, principles of nonequilibria, cell fitnesses, and the chemical origins of life, our work has been about entropies, driving forces, and nature's funneling of disorder to order. This is a story of my personal journey.

Значение симпатовагального баланса как биофизического маркера преэклампсии

Преэклампсия (ПЭ) является одним из серьезных осложнений беременности, которое приводит к синдрому полиорганной недостаточности. Целью исследования было изучение взаимосвязи симпатовагального баланса и типа центральной материнской гемодинамики у беременных с ПЭ. Материалы и методы. Было проведено изучение типа центральной материнской гемодинамики и вариабельности сердечного ритма у 102 пациенток в 32–37 недель беременности. 30 из них были с физиологическим течением процесса гестации и составили группу I (контроля). Во II группе под наблюдением находилось 40 беременных с ПЭ легкой и средней степени. К III группе были отнесены 32 пациентки с ПЭ тяжелой степени. Результаты. Показатели вариабельности сердечного ритма матери отражали гиперсимпатикотонию на фоне ПЭ. Полученные данные подтверждали известную гипердинамическую модель легкой и среднетяжелой ПЭ. Сохранность гестационной гиперволемии на фоне повышенного периферического сопротивления сосудов приводила к увеличению сердечного выброса. Переход к гиповолемии и низкому сердечному выбросу отражал гиподинамическую гемоциркуляцию на фоне тяжелой ПЭ. Повышение симпатовагального баланса было признаком вазоконстрикции и гипоперфузии. Это было подтверждено наличием сильной корреляции между симпатовагальным балансом и общим периферическим сопротивлением сосудов (R = 0,70; р < 0,05), симпатовагальным балансом и сердечным индексом (R = –0,63; р < 0,05 ). Вывод. Повышение симпатовагального баланса более 2,0 было биофизическим маркером ПЭ.

The fascinating field in present civilization scenario at the edge of science is micro-swimmers, which is a combination of bio physics with self-propulsion mechanisms involving swimming strategies at low Reynolds number. These micro swimming robots offer many advantages in biomedical applications such as drug delivery to some specific locations in our human body and also conducting some surgical operations like opening of blocked arteries etc. In recent times, blocked arteries become a major case in the medical world. This is can be diagnosed by Angioplasty (is a minimally invasive, endovascular procedure to widen narrowed or obstructed arteries or veins, typically to treat arterial atherosclerosis) method. So this is the main reason to choose the aorta as our domain for analysis purpose. This paper presents a micro-swimmer with three different heads they are spherical head, Capsule type head and Tapered cylindrical or elliptical head and modelled using SOLIDWORKS and analysis in ANSYS FLUENT.

The decreasing a negative impact of climate change on Indonesian food security

The negative Impact of climate change and food security are crucial issues for Indonesia with a large population. Agricultural sector as a contributor about 5-7 percent to CO 2 emissions, is a victim of climate change as this sector is very sensitive to the change of climate such as rise of temperature, drought, El Nino and La Nina and rise sea level. The decline in production due to climate change and extreme climate is very risky for Indonesia's food security. Various studies and studies have been conducted to evaluate the impact of climate change. However, since 2009, voluntary commitment of Indonesian Government to reduce 26 percent of CO 2 emissions set up the strong effort in many sectors to adapt with climate change. In agriculture, improving soil quality is key in maintaining food production. Soil conservation using vegetative or engineering technique is one of the most important technology. Nutrient management by applying balance fertilization, the use of organic material and ameliorant such as biochar, zeolite and other natural mineral are beneficial for plant production. All these ameliorants will be very useful in maintain soil organic matter (SOM) and soil carbon which very important in increasing water holding capacity. Water harvesting is one option to capture high precipitation and important to irrigate agricultural area. Besides, the use of cropping calendars, high yielding varieties which adapt to biophysical stress will be very useful. Other effort is also needed to control the peat fire, peat drainage and deforestation.

The present investigation portrays an experimental line of design and relational thinking aimed at establishing critical design premises in relation with the present state of change and crisis (Goddard et al., 2015 and Maxmen 2018). The description of abiotic and biotic shifts within the different realms -atmosphere, water and soil- inform the making of the urban / territorial project so it can contribute to the operationalization and management of the new conditions of life: Atmosphere talks about the importance of reading the new biophysical conditions of life through the establishment of a land use system of performances for carbon drawdown and new suitability analysis. Water casts light in the regeneration of ecosystems at watershed level through vegetation density strategies -such as aforestation- to reverse desertification and enhance the water cycle via the Biotic Pump (Makarieva & Gorshkov, 2007). Both Water and Atmosphere describe shifting conditions that land on the Soil, the interface allowing for the interaction of systems, where abiotic conditions are translated and de-codified into biotic conditions that the urban project can design with. Therefore, Soil identifies the ground as the element of design, the sustaining infrastructure of all living systems and proposes the transition from current mono-functional land use systems to regenerative systems through vegetation diversity strategies. The design of the territory of the new modernity, as an inter - multi - disciplinary process, must comprehend and project across the whole gradient of urbanization with the mission to regenerate urban landscapes, that is to say: to regulate atmospheric conditions, manage water patterns, sustain soil health and reconnect stronger culture and nature relations.

Coffee crop coefficient prediction as a function of biophysical variables identified from RGB UAS images

Because of different Brazilian climatic conditions and the different plant conditions, such as the stage of development and even the variety, wide variation may exist in the crop coefficients (𝐾𝑐) values, both spatially and temporally. Thus, the objective of this study was to develop a methodology to determine the short-term 𝐾𝑐 using biophysical parameters of coffee plants detected images obtained by an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS). The study was conducted in Travessia variety coffee plantation. A UAS equipped with a digital camera was used. The images were collected in the field and were processed in Agisoft PhotoScan software. The data extracted from the images were used to calculate the biophysical parameters: leaf area index (LAI), leaf area (LA) and 𝐾𝑐. GeoDA software was used for mapping and spatial analysis. The pseudo-significance test was applied with p < 0.05 to validate the statistic. Moran's index (I) for June was 0.228 and for May was 0.286. Estimates of 𝐾𝑐 values in June varied between 0.963 and 1.005. In May, the 𝐾𝑐 values were 1.05 for 32 blocks. With this study, a methodology was developed that enables the estimation of 𝐾𝑐 using remotely generated biophysical crop data.

ПОЛОЖЕННЯ ФІЗИЧНОЇ ЕКОНОМІЇ В КОНТЕКСТІ ЗАБЕЗПЕЧЕННЯ ГОМЕОСТАЗУ СТАЛОГО ГОСПОДАРЮВАННЯ

На сучасному етапі розвитку виробництва та забезпечення сталого господарювання виникає необхідність подолання неузгодженостей між рівнем технологічного процесу та засобами, що підтримують екологічну безпеку життєдіяльності людини. Таким чином, постає необхідність у пошуку інноваційних шляхи для забезпечення економічного зростання та синхронного покращення екологічних показників виробничих процесів. Перші систематизовані погляди, що вказують на енергетичний характер суспільного багатства, описані в минулому столітті українським мислителем Сергієм Подолинським. Він виклав основні положення теорії розвитку суспільства, що базується на використанні людиною природної енергії, а сама людина розглядалася С. Подолинським як теплова машина.
 Нинішні норми навантаження господарської діяльності на наземні ландшафтні системи є за своєю суттю санітарно-гігієнічними, оскільки вони спрямовані передусім на інтереси людини і не пов'язані з біофізичними критеріями збереження довкілля. Дотримання принципів побудови екологічно сталої економіки, зорієнтованих на запобігання негативним природним змінам потребує формування відповідної статистики біофізичних параметрів. Найкращим розв'язанням даної проблеми є вироблення комплексної державної програми екологічного нормування, яка повинна спрямовувати екологічну безпеку України на досягнення конкретних природоохоронних результатів. Поточним заходом, що має упередити екологізацію управління природокористуванням, повинно стати законодавче закріплення вимог обов'язкового проведення державної і громадської екологічної експертизи планів і проектів. При цьому підприємства і відомства самостійно проводити таку експертизу не мають права. Проблема рівноваги у природі безпосередньо входила до кола досліджуваних В.І. Вернадським. Учений глибоко осягав її теорію. Виходячи зі своїх дослідницьких потреб, він створив власну наукову типологію різновидів гомеостазу – стану рівноваги динамічного середовища, у якому відбуваються біологічні процеси. Учений довів, що усі явища всюди підпорядковані законам рівноваги і повинні бути виражені числами.

Biochemical and biophysical mechanisms underlying the heart and the brain dialog

In this paper, within the so called “neuro-visceral integration model”, it is reviewed the ability of the heart to secrete numerous endocrine mediators, neurotransmitters and substances that regulate the immune function with repercussions on the central nervous system. The heart would also seem to be able to process various information independently, influencing the brain work through the “intrinsic cardiac nervous system” and baroreceptor pathways. In reviewing this matter, further physical mechanisms are also described, including mechanical contractions and deformations, that are involved in the “heart-brain symphony” based on intra-cardiac formation and propagation of blood vortices coupled to electrical signals. The relevance of the role of vorticity of the blood flow in the molecular dynamics and physiological activity is stressed. By resorting to some conceptual and formal aspects of the dissipative quantum model of brain, mechanisms such as the spontaneous breakdown of symmetry in many-body physics, the dynamical formation of long range correlations and their associated Nambu-Goldstone quanta, coherent states and fractal self-similarity are discussed with reference to the heart-brain dialog. Our discussion supports the view that the heart role is more than the one of a muscle responsible of the blood flow. Further related topics such as the formation of aneurysms and vein varices which in our modeling seem to be related to the weakening or loss of vorticity of the blood flow, the role of the recently discovered fluid-filled interstitial structure and the complex network of thick collagen bundles are finally briefly mentioned in the concluding remarks.

Rendimiento de maíz (Zea mays L.) en la mixteca, calculado con DSSAT

Los modelos de simulación, basados en procesos biofísicos, aplicados a la agricultura permiten conocer la dinámica de variables biológicas y ambientales, pero su uso implica grandes cantidades de información de suelo, clima, manejo y fenología de cultivos. En este estudio se calibraron y validaron, con el rendimiento del grano, los coeficientes genéticos del modelo CERES-Maize (Crop Environment Resource Synthesis) (DSSAT, versión 4.7) de plantas híbridas y criollas de maíz (Zea mays L.). El objetivo fue determinar el alcance y las limitaciones del modelo para estimar rendimientos de grano en la región Mixteca de Oaxaca, México. Para el proceso de calibración el ajuste para el maíz híbrido mostró r2 = 0.94 y RMSE = 567.11 y para el criollo se obtuvo r2 = 0.86 y RMSE = 601.58. En el proceso de validación correlación del maíz híbrido mostró r2 = 0.73 y RMSE = 976.65, valores mayores que el cultivar criollo (r2 = 0.62, RMSE = 698.74). El modelo CERES subestimó en promedio 10% del rendimiento del grano. Los cultivares híbridos mostraron un ajuste 10% mayor que los criollos. En general el modelo CERES-Maize estimó adecuadamente los rendimientos de maíz.

Glycans on SARS-CoV-2 may help the virus infect cells

Researchers have created the most complete atomic-level simulation to date of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, which the virus uses to enter host cells. The model reveals that the glycans don't just camouflage the virus from the host immune system, as sugars on proteins are known to do. The glycans on SARS-CoV-2 also help the spike protein take on the conformation that equips it to infect cells ( 2020, DOI: ). "We have an atomic-level model of a fully glycosylated, full-length spike protein, so there's no more missing bits," says , a computational biophysical chemist at the University of California, San Diego. And by looking at the model, she explains, "we realized that a couple glycans in particular were not only acting as part of the shield, camouflaging the virus, but they also seemed to be acting as part of the weaponry." Flood Management in Saint-louis City of Senegal by Stabilizing the Breach

In October 2003, the city of Saint-Louis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was to be swallowed by the rising waters of the Senegal River. That is why, the public authorities and the communal authorities wanting to find an immediate solution to save the city and human lives, took the decision to create a channel of load shedding on the Barbary language called breach. This urgent political decision seems to have profoundly modified the hydrological behavior of the Senegal River in Saint-Louis. The breach opened in Saint-Louis to counter the flood phenomenon, has since the night of October 3 to 4, 2003, the date of its opening, caused many environmental problems resulting from profound changes in the biophysical characteristics of the area (floods, loss of biodiversity). However, many specialists are still thinking about the issue but still do not find sustainable solutions to restore the balance. The aim of this study is to propose technics for stabilizing the area with two specific objectives such as understanding its evolution and evaluating the threats to the neighbouring villages. This study on the evolution of the breach from 2003 to 2013 is based is conducted by analysis of samples taken from the Langue de Barbarie and the breach to determine their type. The main results show that the soil is sandy, which has made it possible to propose structural and non-structural stabilization methods. The compilation of the different results shows two types of stabilization (structural methods and non-structural methods). The two methods constitute for each of them, a durable alternative solution for the stabilization of the breach in order to limit the environmental damages. Meanwhile, it would be important to monitor the structure by annual analyzes of the structure.

Crops residue trade-offs between livestock feed and soil amendment in no-till system in Moroccan dry area

In the dry zone of Morocco, the production of biomass is irregular while the agricultural and animal production systems are matted. As a result, the crop residues use gives rise to tradeoffs which mainly translate into competition. This research aims to characterize the tradeoffs around cereal residues use between livestock feed and soil amendment in a no-till system. This study relied on a literature review, focus group discussions and experiment. Practices related to crop residues management were shaped by historical evolutions caused by two major shifts: Property rights and agricultural policies, and the frequency of droughts. The crop-livestock integration farming system in dry areas of Morocco is currently articulated around the role of residues as animal feed. Livestock is considered more profitable in general and more secure in case of drought. For this, the thatch has a very important value for livestock that compete with that on the soil amendment in a no-till system. It is obvious that the biophysical benefits of residues retention are tangible in term of improving yields, compared with no-till farming with residues removal. However, even reduced crop residues combined with limited soil disturbance would contribute to efficient water use and increased production. Key words: Crop residues, tradeoff, livestock, no-till, Moroccan dry lands.
