Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine how social support types are related to resilience among older adults, and to provide intervention strategies to help older adults overcome difficulties in an aging society. The participants of this study were 2,004 older adults aged 65 or above who completed the 2014 Chuncheon Elderly Life Conditions Survey. The dependent variable, resilience, was measured with the Conor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). The independent variable, social support type, was divided into emotional, instrumental, and economic support. The relationships between social support types and resilience were examined using multiple regression analyses. The main findings of this study are as follows. First, emotional support was not significantly associated with resilience among older adults. Second, instrumental support was positively associated with resilience among older adults (p<.05). Third, economic support was not significantly associated with resilience among older adults. The results suggested the necessity of social support for increasing resilience among older adults.
