Abstract

2021 has had a torrent of natural disasters, that has brought climate and nature emergencies into the spotlight. But due to the problematic history of western and colonial visions of conservation, we can not adequately address these issues. The island of Saipan is considered an unincorporated insular area of the United States. U.S. citizens living in these territories are not able to enjoy the rights of the constitution. This has led to the U.S. government making decisions on behalf of the Saipan's people and has hindered the government's ability to protect nature. Colonialism is still an issue today and has led to poor decisions being made hurting humans and our environment. Paying more attention to who makes decisions can help lead to the benefit of nature and all humans.
