Abstract
The paper deals with the competences of a special education teacher in the educational process. In the paper, we describe not only professional criteria, but also personal prerequisities that the given pedagogical profession should meet with regard to the complexity of the work. The work of a special education teacher requires a high degree of expertise, patience and empathy considering the challenging pedagogical situations that arise on a daily basis in the education of pupils with different types and degrees of disability.
