Abstract
In 1949, the international council for building documentation (CIDB) was created following the initiative of the United Nations economic commission for Europe (ECE) in Geneva. The aim was to encourage cooperation at nongovernmental level regarding the scientific and technical work undertaken to support governmental policies. This activity on building information and documentation was extended in 1953 to form the international council for building research, studies and documentation (CIB). This chapter discusses the main objectives of CIB, and considers how successful CIB has been in reaching its main objectives, reviewing not only the successes achieved, but also various problems that have been encountered; it further discusses the possible developments in the future particularly in the context of governmental building research policies.
