Abstract
This chapter discusses some of the factors involved in formulating policies aimed at promoting the utilization of the results of research and development in the building field. It focuses on the dissemination process, which is regarded as part of a cycle in which goals for research are established, appropriate research is carried out, and the results are applied, leading in time to new needs and new goals. Dissemination is a part of a number of research/application cycles that are and should be interrelated. Research activity has advantages and disadvantages. It permits research to be carried out near to the point of application, so minimizing communication problems, for goal-setting as well as dissemination of results. Fragmentation of research has militated against the interdisciplinary or system approach, which is needed in dissemination and in the carrying out of research itself, though there is no reason why this must be so in principle.
