Abstract

This chapter describes the molecule IFNα and IFNω and the other names of the molecule are provided. The α interferons including IFNω are a family of inducible secreted proteins, often produced in response to viral infection, resistance to viruses on target cells, and so on Various nomenclatures are given to IFNα proteins. The cross-reactivity, sources, and bioassays are provided. The physiochemical properties for human and mouse for the molecule IFNα and IFNω are summarized in a table. The 3-D structure is briefed and the gene structure is represented schematically. The names of SwissProt accession numbers of the human and mouse IFNα molecules are listed. The amino acid sequence for human IFNα1 (IFNαD) (Accession code: SwissProt P01562) and human IFNω (IFNαII) (Accession code: SwissProt P05000). The amino acid sequence for mouse IFNα1 (Accession code: P01572) is provided. The structure of IFNα receptors are illustrated schematically and the distribution is indicated. The physiochemical properties of the IFNα receptors are given in a table for humans and mouse. The signal transduction and the chromosomal location are provided along with the amino acid sequence for human IFNAR-1 (Accession code: SwissProt P17181), human IFNAR-2 (Accession code: SwissProt P48551) and mouse IFNα (IFNAR-1) receptor (Accession code: SwissProt P33986) are provided. A list of further resources concludes the chapter.
