Abstract

Human B cell activating factor (BAFF) belongs to the Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF) that was cloned following the screening of public databases using an improved profile search, based on an optimal alignment currently known “TNF ligand family members.” This chapter describes the molecule BAFF. The other names of the molecule are mentioned. The crossreactivity, sources, and bioassays are provided. The physiochemical properties of BAFF are summarized in a table for human and mouse and the 3-D structure is available. The gene structure of BAFF is localized to human chromosome 13q32-34. The amino acid sequence for human BAFF (Accession code: SPTREMBLE Q9Y275) and mouse BAFF (Accession code: SPTREMBLE Q9WU72) is provided. The structure of BAFF receptor is described and the distribution is indicated. The signal transduction and the chromosomal location are provided. The amino acid sequence for human BCMA (Accession code: SwissProt Q02223) is presented. The amino acid sequence for mouse BCMA (Accession code: SwissProt O88472) are presented. A list of further resources concludes the chapter.
