Abstract

This chapter describes the molecule Activin which represent a family of TGFβ-like proteins. The other names are “erythroid differentiating factor,” “FSH-releasing protein,” and “inhibin.” The cross-reactivity, sources and bioassays are provided. The physiochemical properties of Activin βA-chain are summarized in a table for human and mouse and the 3-D structure of Activin is currently unknown. The gene structure is mentioned and the amino acid sequence for human Activin βA- subunit (Accession code: SwissProt P08476) and mouse Activin βA-subunit (Accession code: SwissProt Q04998) is provided. The structure of Activin receptor is illustrated schematically and the distribution is indicated. The physiochemical properties of Activin receptors are given in a table for human and mouse forms. The signal transduction and the chromosomal location are provided. The amino acid sequence for human Activin receptor type I (Accession code: SwissProt Q04771), human Activin receptor type II (Accession code: SwissProt P27037) and human Activin receptor type IIB (Accession code: SwissProt Q13705) are presented. The amino acid sequence for mouse Activin receptor type I (Accession code: SwissProt P31712), mouse Activin receptor type II (Accession code: SwissProt P27038) are presented. A list of further resources concludes the chapter.
