Abstract
This chapter describes the molecule Interleukin 6 (IL-6) that is a multifunctional cytokine secreted by lymphoid cells, which regulates B and T cell function, haematopoiesis and acute phase reactions. The other names for this molecule are presented in the chapter. The cross-reactivity, sources, and bioassays are highlighted. The physiochemical properties of IL-6 for human and mouse and the 3-D structure are presented in tabular form. The gene structure is schematically illustrated. The amino acid sequence for human IL-6 (Accession code: SwissProt P05231) and mouse IL-6 (Accession code: SwissProt P08505) is provided. The structure of IL-6 receptor is illustrated schematically and the distribution is indicated. The physiochemical properties of the IL-6 receptor for humans and mouse are presented in a tabular form. The signal transduction and the chromosomal location are provided along with the amino acid sequence for human IL-6 receptor α–chain (Accession code: SwissProt P08887), human IL-6 receptor β–chain (gp130) (Accession code: SwissProt P40189) and mouse IL-6 receptor α–chain (Accession code: SwissProt P22272), mouse IL-6 receptor β–chain (gp130) (Accession code: SwissProt Q00560) are provided. A list of further resources concludes the chapter.
