Abstract

This chapter describes the molecule Glial-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (GDNF). GDNF is a glycosylated disulfide-bonded homodimer which is distantly related to TGFβ superfamily. The crossreactivity is not known, sources, and bioassays are provided. The physiochemical properties of GDNF are summarized in a table for human and mouse and the 3-D structure is not known. The gene structure is given and the amino acid sequence for human GDNF (Accession code: SwissProt P39905) and mouse GDNF (Accession code: SwissProt P48540) is provided. The structure of GDNF receptor is illustrated schematically and the distribution is indicated. The physiochemical properties of the GDNF receptor are given in a table for human and mouse forms. The signal transduction and the chromosomal location are provided. The amino acid sequence for human GDNF receptor α (Accession code: SwissProt P56159) and GDNF receptor β (Accession code: SwissProt O00451) are presented. The amino acid sequence for mouse GDNF receptor α (Accession code: SwissProt P97785) and mouse GDNF receptor β (Accession code: SwissProt O09942) are presented. The amino acid sequence for human and mouse is also highlighted. A list of further resources concludes the chapter.
