Abstract
This chapter discusses the plant tour of Idemitsu Kosan Co. Ltd. It also provides an overview of Idemitsu Kosan along with the concepts behind refinery management and operation by advanced technology. The business philosophy of the company is that business means seeking human potential. In line with this philosophy, the company does not have specialist groups, such as an optimizing control group, but work on advanced technology tools and applications is done in project teams by line staff. Two key items in the advanced technology program are the integrated refinery information system and the use of expert systems in refinery operations. At the Aichi Refinery, a presentation on the structure, functionality, and operation of the process diagnostic and alarming expert system PDIAS was given by the developer of the system. PDIAS is a rule-based expert system for alarming abnormal conditions in a residue fluid catalytic cracker. It synthesizes audible alarms based on process conditions input automatically through distributed control system.
