Abstract

This chapter describes the neurological brain disorders known as Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, and essential tremor which affect motor function and coordination of body movement. The symptoms are discussed as well as how electrical stimulation of the brain can help reduce the effect of involuntary muscle movement known as bradykinesia, and akinesia, or not being able to move at all. The Vercise DBS (Boston Scientific) and the Brio (St Jude Medical) provide deep brain stimulation, while the Activa PC+S DBS (Medtronic) is able to sense Local Field Potentials as well as provide deep brain stimulation.
