Abstract

In this chapter, the two-axis model of a synchronous machine is given and the machine analysis following Park’s model is explained. Voltage and flux linkage relations are derived. All the three-phase relations are converted into the d–q axis model using a transformation matrix. From the general relations, the steady-state equations and the steady-state vector diagram are obtained. Using a steady-state short circuit oscillogram, all the reactances for the machine are defined. Equivalent circuit and phasor diagrams are obtained for transient stability studies. Salient pole synchronous machine phasor diagram is developed. Expressions for real and reactive power are derived. The effect of external reactance is discussed.
