Abstract

This chapter introduces some of the essential features of modern power system which are required for the analysis of the system in operation. The important elements and their circuit representation are presented. The two possible network solution models, namely voltage form and current form, are defined. Network solution under fault condition is discussed. The need for using sequence component system, defined under the condition of power invariance is, brought out. The concept of primitive network and its utility is explained. The importance of study of power system stability is explained. The evolution of modern power system from vertically integrated mode of operation into deregulated mode for enhanced economy, better security and greater reliability is also explained. The necessity of developing and incorporating into the system of renewable energy resources is mentioned.
