Abstract

The codes specify the location, type of extinguishing agent, maintenance, inspections, and training of staff relating to portable fire extinguishers within health care environments, and contain very specific requirements for an ASC. Fire extinguishers must contain a relevant extinguishing agent for the type of fire that is most likely to occur where the extinguisher is located; furthermore, the locations in which extinguishers are mounted within the facility are essential to ensure adequate protection. Portable fire extinguishers must also be mounted so that they are not hidden or obscured from view. Because extinguishers need to be readily available and absolutely must work properly when needed, the codes require regular maintenance and inspections.
