Abstract

Alcohol-based hand rubs are essential for controlling the spread of infectious organisms in ambulatory surgery centers. Alcohol-based hand rub is typically packaged in pump bottles or soft bladders for insertion into pump dispensers. The alcohol content may be up to 95%, which means that it is highly flammable. The American Society of Healthcare Engineers commissioned a fire modeling analysis that showed that with adequate spacing and other installation criteria, alcohol-based hand rubs could be utilized in health care environments with a reasonable degree of safety. Monthly visual checks for proper installation are required for alcohol-based hand rub dispensers, and documentation of the inspections/maintenance must be retained on site and available for an inspector or surveyor to review.
