Abstract

Fire and life safety codes contain specific requirements regarding how a building can be constructed. Providing a “way out” or means of egress is one of the most important components. The historical performance of fire protection systems, such as fire sprinklers, fire alarms, and fire extinguishers, has demonstrated their value in increasing life safety. In order to reduce the risks associated with the use and distribution of medical gasses, fire and life safety codes include a number of requirements that ASCs must adhere to. There may be requirements in surgical suites for protecting staff and patients from electrical shock via specific types of safeguarding equipment. The interior finishes of an ASC are regulated by fire and life safety codes to help control the spread of fire. Thorough documentation is required for a facility to be compliant with fire and life safety codes.
