Abstract

Physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models simulate the pharmacokinetics of chemicals after their administration to laboratory animals or human exposure to chemicals. Learning how to write code to describe dosing in laboratory animals or human exposure is an important aspect of creating a PBPK model. In this chapter, the simplest rate equations are described for oral intake, inhalation, and dermal exposures to chemicals. Selected references are given for more complex (and biologically realistic) approaches to writing code to simulate these routes of exposure. The exercises at the end of the chapter will help the beginner learn how to simulate chemical absorption into the body.
