Abstract

The pathophysiology underlying acute liver failure is described and treatment outlined. The causes of chronic liver disease and cirrhosis are discussed, including autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cholangitis and chronic viral hepatitis (due to hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus). Drugs for treatment of these conditions are considered in detail. The management of these conditions is discussed. The complications of decompensated cirrhosis are explained, including chronic hepatic encephalopathy, variceal haemorrhage and ascites. Management of these complications is outlined.
