Abstract

This chapter discusses schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, describing their pathophysiology; the pharmacology of drugs used in their treatment; and the clinical approach to managing these conditions. Specific drug classes discussed in this chapter include the conventional (first-generation) and atypical (second-generation) antipsychotic drugs. Lithium and anticonvulsants are also considered as mood-stabilising drugs for bipolar disorder.
