Abstract
The prevalence of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is increasing as the population ages. Critical limb ischemia (CLI) represents the most advanced form of atherosclerotic lower extremity disease, with approximately 1.3% of the US population affected. Current management of CLI focuses on revascularization of the affected limb via peripheral endovascular or open surgical techniques. Medical management options are mandatory therapies that provide the basis for prevention of coronary and cerebrovascular ischemic events, and improve survival, but have limited impact on limb ischemia. If patients are not ideal candidates for revascularization, they often progress to amputation.
